4 comments about Wüsthof 4-Piece Stainless-Steel Steak Knife Set with Storage Box.
- I live in SW Florida. Everything down here rusts, even the nails in the walls. I am gradually replacing all my aluminum bakeware with stainless steel and have also been looking for stainless steak knives, having already found several good stainless steel paring and carving knives. Amazon has a deal I couldn't refuse. $90 steak knives for only $29.99. I bought two sets and I couldn't be happier. It will take some time to get used to their slim shape and lighter weight, after using big clunky steakhouse-style wooden-handle knives for so many years. My husband might not be as enthusiastic as I am about the smaller knives but they are sharp and classy looking and they cut meat very well. I will keep a couple of clunky ones in a drawer just in case. Some people want fancy boxes to keep theirs in and these come in an aluminum box with riveted corners and a fancy clasp, but I don't keep my knives in boxes. No storage room. I have a lot of stainless steel German knives and I consider them to be the best. I have magnetized bars attached to the wall behind my stove and all my stainless knives are there, handy and nice-looking. These will complete my collection of nice-looking knives on that wall, handy where I can just reach up and grab them. You just can't beat the price, but if you don't like them you can return them. Amazon is the best place I have found to buy everything I need for my kitchen, bar none. I will give these two shiny aluminum boxes to my grandchildren for their treasures.
- I have recently become a Wusthof addict! I can't seem to get enough of the Wusthof Classic line. I was thrilled when I saw this deal on the Amazon Friday only sales & without hesitation placed my order. I love the case these come with, the knives are very nice & very sharp. My husband and I both love this set of steak knives! A+++! Ok Amazon.... lets see some more Wusthof on the Friday only sales, I need to add to my Wusthof collection! :o)
- I am usually wary of things coming in fancy boxes but these knives have turned out to be fantastic. I purchased them (without my wife knowing) for a special dinner I had for a couple friends. My wife didn't notice them until she sank the knife into her perfectly grilled rib eye. The knife went through it like butter. My guests were also impressed. This helped to temper the scolding I got after they left for going over my kitchen gadget allowance. As soon as they go on sale again in my gold box (which now seems to filled with too much jewelry) I'll purchase another 2 sets immediately.
- The storage box is really a nice touch and it makes it possible to store these lovely knives in a way that should keep them good-looking and sharp for a long time.
Impressive as the box is for presentation (if giving this as a gift, be aware that the knives were wrapped separately from the box and you will probably want to set these in their slots before wrapping), the knives themselves were what bowled me over. The design is simplicity itself, and thus coordinates beautifully with contemorary or more traditional place settings. There is a satisfying heft and balance: too bad Wusthof does not (as far as I know) make flatware. And these do the job easily and efficiently. A good, sharp knife poses much less risk to plates than dull blades.
It is easy to see why Wusthof would warrant these knives for a lifetime; I'd bet that these are good for several lifetimes.

- All three knives are the Wusthof quality I expected. Three different shapes seemed over-kill at first - but I found them extremely useful. A well thought out product.
- I really only use the 3 in paring knife. I have had this set for many years and recently bought it for a relative who was very pleased I did. The peeling and straight utility knives are seldem used but its nice to have them when you need them. The steel used in Wusthof knives seem to take and hold an edge better than any other knife I own. The 6 in chef knife completes the other 5% which is used for bigger jobs.
This place has great prices for the best of the best. Shipping was quick and the Amazon payment system works great.
- Wusthof knives are the best knives ever. I got my first one free from a Central Market giveaway. The handles are very comfortable and they stay nice and sharp.
- These knives are a great addition to any kitchen -- super sharp, well crafted, versatile. Highly recommended!

- These are not what you'd expect from Wusthof. The Wusthof symbol on the handle is a STICKER (!!!) which bleaches out after washing. Also, after 1 months use and washing, we're getting rust spots. While these knives are sharp, they are not holding up appearance wise. Very disappointed.
- These are quite flimsy and develop rust spots extremely easily. Not the quality one would expect from this company. We have several of Wusthof Classic's line (Chef's, paring, utility, etc) have found them to be sturdy, true, well-balanced in the hand and have held up very well over the past 3 years in our busy kitchen. We didn't expect these steak knives to be of the same quality, but they were suprisingly low quality for the brand and the cost.
- I have a set of these steak knives and love them.
Unlike most inexpensive steak knives these knives are fine edge and not serrated. I like the cut of fine edge knives. They make clean cuts without shreading. These are stamped knives which are a lot less expensive than the forged Classic knives in my set but they look the same and for how much they are used they perform well at half the price of the forged knives. I have never had the rusting problem, but I hand wash all my knives. These are not stainless steel. I heard once that most of the time when knives rust it is because they are put in the dishwasher. The dishwasher leaves metal deposits on your flatware. When those deposits dry they turn to rust. Come to find out it is usually your dishwasher that is rusting when this happens. I never stick good knives in the dishwasher.
- I hate when people complain about carbon steel knives rusting. These are not cheap stainless steel knives. They are carbon steel and carbon steel knives rust. Wash them by hand and dry them immediately. Just common sense people. These are great knives. My wife and bought a 18pc gourmet set for her mom and these are the exact same knives included in the set. They are not as rigid as the classics but they retain a razor-sharp edge and are comfortable in your hand and are affordable. What more could you want?

- I actually bought a cheaper version of these knives, and they are so nice that I can't even imagine how well this version must cut. I had no idea knives could be this effective. puts mass marketed brands such as henkels to shame.
- We received these as wedding gifts in mid-2003. We have several other Wusthof Classic knives purchased as open stock. The steak knives we received as a 6-piece set. We treat these knives better than we treat our friends. They get touched up by the steel, they don't soak, they are hand-washed and they go in the block when not in use. However, last night an approximately 1 cubic centimeter chunk of the handle nearest the blade fell into my wife's dinner. She was shocked, as was I. Upon closer inspection, another steak knife from the set was about to suffer the same fate. I think it must have been a bad production run given all our other knives, received at the same time (and which get used about the same amount) all look fine. I sent them back yesterday so I'm interested to see how well they honor their warranty.
Update 1/23/07: Received replacement knives today. Putting them back into the block was bittersweet because I noticed another one of the original set is developing a crack, this time at the bottom. Not sure what the issue is...
Main point: They appear to honor their warranty.
- These are damn sharp knives, comfortable to hold, and of course they cut a ribeye like the proverbial butter. Heck, they cut an overcooked, leathery skirt steak the same way!
These were a follow-on to the complete Wusthof knife set. I'd recommend Wusthof highly to any halfway serious chefs out there. This is serious German steel at a reasonable price.
- I love all the Wusthof knives we have. Before we got married, we had a functional set and a really crappy set from lord knows where. We had no idea just how good knives could be. We were blown away when we tried these for the first time. We had these since July and haven't had to sharpen them yet (I was sharpening my last set all the time). When were were looking into the steak knives, we really couldn't see the difference between the expensive version and the cheaper ones. We went on faith that the expensive ones really were better. We got them, and tried them on some filets. Huge difference from our old set. Then I went to visit my father and found he had the cheaper Wusthof steak knives. They too were better than the crappy ones we previously had, but there is a significant difference in quality and ability to cut between the two Wusthof choices. If you have the money, go for the more expensive set. You won't regret it.
- These Classic Wusthof knives are precision manufactured with full bolsters and triple rivets on their handles to their tangs. The high quality of their construction is evident for anyone who knows excellent knives. These knives are forged, not stamped. The blades are plain edge and sharp. No serrated teeth are necessary. Someone can certainly buy cheaper steak knives elsewhere. But for those who want the very best Solingen stainless steel knives, then these set of steak knives are for you.
You can also buy these as a set of four if six are too many. Wüsthof Classic 4-Piece Steak Knife Set

- Just received these knives and they seem to be a fine set of steak knives. However, I noticed that these gourmet series (with the exception of the 8" chef's knife), use different steel than their more expensive classic series. Specifically, the classic series uses "X50CrMn15" material, whereas these gourmet series uses "X46Cr13". The major difference being that X46Cr13 contains less carbon (0.5% vs. 0.46%) and that it does not contain Mn (molybdenum), which is needed for knives to be totally dishwasher safe. ...
- In reading the comments on these knives I noticed that there was a different type of metal in the Gourmet vs the Classic. I checked my knives and then contacted a friend of mine that is into knives. He said that Molybdenum is put into the steel for forging purposes only thus it has no effect on the sharpness or finish. Because Gourmet is a stamped knife it does not require this type of material. I have the knives and they are great. They are not the quality of the Classic but they don't carry that price either.
- I essentially agree with what other reviewers have written (except that Mn is molybdenum- Mn is manganese, Mo is molybdenum). Are they of the superior craftsmanship of the Wusthof Classic line? No, they are not. But at a fraction of the price of Classic, you already knew they wouldn't be. The plastic handle and thinner steel do feel a bit on the cheap size when holding the knife, but they look great alongside the rest of our Wusthof cutlery (which is why my fiance and I bought them). And don't worry about performance; all meats that I've cut succumb nicely to the straight edge blades. What I can't comment on is the blades' longevity. We've only had them a short while, and I don't know how they'll hold their edge.
My final word on them is that those who can afford the Classic line (and I truly wish I was one of them) should purchase the Classic. But for those who can't, don't be shy about purchasing Gourmet. You'll get what you pay for, and since you're paying for Wusthof, how disappointed can you be?

- I was surprised at the quality of these knives for the price. I was not prepared to spend a rediculous amount of money on a knife set with a blade for every plausible occasion. This set has the perfect number of knives and each one feels natural in the hand.
Although this set comes with a sharpener, I recommend getting the Wüsthof 2904 Knife-Life knife and scissor sharpener. You will not need to sharpen these knives much, but that sharpener will make your life much easier and will renew every single pair of scissors in your house.
I also recommend, as others have, to never place these knives in the dishwasher. Also be sure to washt hem by hand and thoroughly dry them immediately after use. This will drastically increase their longevity.
If you purchase these, and I propose you do so, then get a travel roll bag for knives. This is because you will want to take them to friends' and family's homes to "show them off"!
- After purchasing this item, I realized there are different varieties of Wüsthof knives. The "Classic" and "Grand Prix" are made from forged steel, where as the "Gourmet" series is stamped from a sheet of steel. They look more cheaply made and while I'm sure they are good knives, it's worth your money to have one amazing knife, as opposed to 10 good knives. Thankfully the seller was great about accepting my return. Also of note: the shears were left out of the shipment, likely just a fluke, but make sure you count the pieces when your package arrives! Also, the knives arrived in a 17-slot block, not the 9-slot block mentioned in the description.
- We just got these knives for our wedding and were so excited to be the proud new owners of a set of Wusthof knives. What a disappointment we had when we pulled them from the box. These sheet-metal knives look like they'd snap at the very sight of a raw carrot. These knives bent easily, looked cheap and were immediately returned to their box. We plan to stick with Wusthof, but are going to return these and pay the extra for a good set of Classics or Culinars.
It's understandable that Wusthof (or any company) wants to provide products for entry-level buyers, and apparently this was the only way to reach this price point. But, after seeing these and reading a couple of reviews, it seems a waste of very good money for knives that don't look like they'll make it through the holidays, muchless years to come.
Save your money and invest in their forged steel!
- WE're not professional chefs (or anywhere near it), but these knifes really do the job. They're very sharp, well weighted and great value!
- I expected much better quality from Wustof. Very light and not a good feel.

- These knives are wonderful! Cut through anything with ease. I highly recommend.
- These knives are great. Sharpest knives I have ever used. They cost less than its comparables and work perfectly. I see myself using these knoves for the rest of my life.
- If you're willing to pay this kind of money, you expect great knives. These won't disappoint. They did feel a little light at first, but after using them a few weeks it feels light, but solid and well balanced. The edges are phenomenal if you're upgrading from a cheap set.
Be sure to take good care of them, handwash only! And be sure to dry immediately. Learn how to properly use the steel, and these will last you a lifetime!
Paying for the more expensive sets (Classic line) isn't worth it in my opinion. The knives feel about the same, but the Classic line is supposedly made with higher quality metal and is "hand-forged." But "hand-forged" really means that there's some guy that tells a machine to forge it. Wusthof employees certainly aren't over in Solingen with a hammer and tongs over the anvil!
If you can afford these knives, it's not a purchase you will regret. There are definitely more knives than I need, but I will never wish I had just bought the next set up.
- In the one month I have owned these knives, I have to say, they are truly a well-balanced, sharp looking, and sharp cutting set of knives. These knives replaced my stainless steel every day name brand knives and they have by far out performed the US made knives. I highly recommend these knives.

- This deal is wicked sharp. You could probably cut the nuts of a gnat with it. I choose to chop veggies with it though. It looks really cool. While it won't help you to score with chicks, it certainly can't hurt.
- I bought this as a Chritmas present for my son-in-law based on it's good reviews. We both tried it out on Christmas dinner with lots of prep work. It slices through hard veggies like carrots amazingingly well. This is a five star product!
- Knife is great, but ordering experience not so. Received a double order and had to pay shipping and handling back to vendor in Canada. They wouldn't waive the handling fee. I have no clue how I could have double-ordered, and I've been ordering off the web for years. Order must not have good "confirmation" pane after placing order.
- I love my knives and this is fast becoming a favorite. I wish it were a little larger - I'm used to my larger French Knife. It is also very sharp - cut through my fingernail with little resistance (remember the advice to keep fingers bent toward your palm when chopping?). Although it would not be my choice for an only knife, it would be near the top.
- The classic Wusthof knives are the best I have ever used, and the santoku knives are my favorite.

- this product came quickly and was everything I expected of the name..it has worked well and is extremely sharp...very pleased..will order other sizes...as it is a BIG savings over the store prices...
- Great little knife at a great price. Stays sharp and I use it for everything.
- Great paring knife. Made in Germany. Nice, balanced feel and just the right sized and shaped handle for easy gripping. Appears to be very solidly built and durable. Information on printed paper blade sheath: high carbon, no-stain steel blade, ergonomic handle construction, hygienic and dishwasher safe. I like it.
- This is a wonderful paring knife. It is sharp and stays sharp. It works beautifully and reminds me of a knife my grandmother had. Haven't had to sharpen it yet.
