  1. I have to say, I love this knife. For the price, it's unbeatable. It has great balance. It holds a pretty good edge - maybe not as well as a high-end Wusthof or Henckels - but it's not a $100 knife. I also love the wood handle. Black and steel-handled knives are so 90's. The handle on this knife is a rich, solid, cherry-type wood with beautiful grain.

I am currently looking at an entire Sabatier Loire set, based entirely on my experience with this knife. You cannot go wrong - even if you already have a knife set.

  1. I found the steak knives to be a very poor example of Laguiole.
The price ... was very fair, and did not expect the quality to match knives from the Laguiole region much more expensive. But these were very light weight, and the blades of
no better than promotional steak knives on TV

  2. unlike the set from last year that was great!!... these have a cheap feel and a thiner and bendable blade they do not even carry the Laguiole name on the blade now. not worth the money. came in a broken box that was pieces of two or three others that would not fit together. a pure waste

  1. For the price you would think that these are junk knives but I love a good knife and these are great for the price. Compared to the Henkels they are similar in quality. They hone well, have a nice angle to them for chopping and work well. I was suprised how well these keep up with the $120 chef knife. For the price try it; give to the kids if you don't like them.

  1. I have another set of Sabatier knives that I got for about $20 less than this set.. which is basically the same exact knives, just simpler handles! This set is nice - don't get me wrong. The knives themselves work very well and are simple to clean. I do think you can find a set just as nice for a LOT less money.

  2. I bought a set of sabatier knives from Amazon for about 30 bucks about three months ago. While they are worth that amount, the suggested retail price of something over $300 was VERY misleading. I paid for what I got, but not much more. They cut OK and they have worked fine for a person who uses them about once every blue moon, but to suggest they are quality knives at an unbelievable price is false advertising. I have always been happy with Amazon, and I wonder on what grounds they are able to make such a claim. Additionally, the set I was sent was missing a knife, but not worth the hastle to return in order to receive another set in its entirity. Sp, buy them if you want cheap knives...cheaply...don't if you're looking for a killer deal.

  3. My initial reaction, when I received the Sabatier Loire 14 piece Knife Block Set, was both negative and positive. Negative: the name Sabatier Loire is misleading. This knife set is not French, it is made in China (it has no connection with France or French Sabatier cutlery that I can see). Positive: the knives certainly look as attractive as in the Amazon.com illustration, they appear carefully made and very well finished.
So, how do they work in the kitchen?
The problem is: as cutting instruments, they don't come anywhere near top-quality European knives. I am used to Wusthof Classic kitchen knives, which slice through things effortlessly. The 'Sabatier Loire' knives feel relatively blunt. Sharpening the 'Sabatier' blades with a Wusthof steel didn't make much difference (perhaps because the blades of the 'Sabatier Loire' knives seem thicker than Wusthof's, they don't sharpen well). Wusthof knives slice through celery and other plants instantly and easily, while 'Sabatier Loire' require applying pressure and sawing away. My no-name slicing knife (bought for $6 at Zabar's in Manhattan) cuts carrots with a fraction of the effort.
The bread knife doesn't compare with Wusthof's.
So, I have an attractive-looking, large kitchen paperweight (it's not worth returning the set). The Chinese maker deserves an 'E' for effort, which has not been spared in producing a very nicely finished product. But they have yet to learn the techniques of shaping a knife blade, and sharpening it, which makes real French Sabatier cutlery (and Wusthof cutlery) so superior.

  4. Go to www.sabatier.com. If you go to the Sabatier website, you will discover that this company originated in France but did not get trademark protection. Thus, several different companies use the Sabatier name. These knives were made in China, not France, by an unrelated company.

The Sabatier website explains the situation. If you're really wanting to buy these, please take a couple of minutes to go to their website and read their Q&A. Here are some excerpts:

"As things stand, a large number of knives bear the name "SABATIER", it is even possible to find knives marked "SABATIER" which are made in China, and this is the case notably in the United States."

"The only way for you to be sure of buying a genuine top quality SABATIER knife is to steer clear of those produced in the Far East . . ."

I have hand washed my knives, but they still rusted. They were also not very sharp from the outset. If you look at the handles and the emblems on the knives, you can tell that they are just plastic molds. When you have the specimen in front of you, they look & feel a little cheap. The wooden block is okay, but some of the grooves were not properly crafted -- a couple of my knives stick out about 1/8", which might seem small, but it is obvious on the block.

I know it's very affordable. But I recommend that you try knives of a brand that is made by an authentic manufacturer.

  5. Made in China, good for taking camping if you want slightly better knives for cooking in the field, but nothing you would want to display with pride in your kitchen!

  1. The kitchen counter utensil holder sits packed with some of the best goodies available. And yet 90 out of 100 times I reach for this one.
1-it is wood - doesn't melt (and give off nasty VOCs), doesn't get hot.
2-it is OLIVE wood - don't know why, but olive wood makes for the best utensils.
3-it has better surface coverage than a spoon. I can move food off the bottom, corner and sides of the pan more easily.
4-if food sticks to the bottom I can stir the bottom of the pan without scraping the burnt parts. A metal spoon will more readily scrape stuck food.
5-it easily sits on the edge of the pan (spoons tend to fall off).
6-the edge is thin enough to slice casseroles (and a large enough flat surface to serve it).
7-the grain pattern is nice enough that you can use it at the table.
8-if you use Teflon (which I discourage) you can stir and scrape like a mad Wookie and not worry about scratching the surface.

  2. Arrived sooner than expected in perfect condition.

Pro-Absolutely beautiful wood grains!!! Nice, thin edge you can actually use. Olive wood lasts me much longer than any other wood type. Other woods just flake their seals off, eventually.

Con-I prefer an actual handle. This item has a handle about 1/4 inch thick and absolutely flat. It feels like I'm holding a butterknife by the blade. Maybe it's main use is more "polite" than I'm used to.

Recommendation-Get it if you can make use of the handle.

  1. The finish was atrocious; the handles were finished very irregularly, and the steel of the blades was badly scuffed. The little wooden rays were a joke. The worst part was that I ordered them for a gift, ... I still had to scramble to find a gift.

  2. A cheap imitation of the originals from France but they are useful. The wood handle and the shape is good looking. The originals are three times the price of these. I would buy another set or different types in this line because if you loose or brake one it is no big deal.........

  3. These are cheap knock-offs, feather light and a sad misrepresentation of the fine Lagioule name. Buy anything else, because you won't like these ratty little cheapos.

  4. This set of knives is beautifull. They are sturdy and very well made. The price is well worth the product and I think it's a great value for the money. Let's face it most of the time you get what you pay for, These on the other hand defy that logic not by alot but defy it none the less. I would encourage anyone looking for a decent set of steak knives and arent willing to pay the big $$$, to pick these up. You won't be dissappointed.

  5. I knew better than to order a set at this price, but hey... you never know. Now I do. I thought perhaps the first price was reflective of the sets quality--boy was I wrong. This set would never sell for 60 some dollars. Although the knives are useable (hence the 2 stars) they are NOT of good quality. The box is very flimsy and I wouldn't give this as a gift. If you want a knock-off go to TJMaxx or someplace and see these kind of knives for yourself before you buy. I'm going to save for some real Laguiole knives!

  1. Even though I've had to explain its purpose, the people to whom I've given this spoon have all been delighted. I kept one and gave one to about four friends -- tres charmant!
