  1. I use my Global chef's knife for nearly everything in the kitchen. But some of the more delicate kitchen tasks require the care and precision that is just plain difficult with an 8 inch blade. That's when I pull out this bad boy. It has the same razor sharp blade and stylish good looks as its big brother, but in a much smaller package. I use this knife for every small task ranging from segmenting oranges to coring or filleting strawberries.

Just beware... Many of my coworkers who have big hands or "sausage fingers" find this knife a little too... well, little. If that is your case, you may want to skip Global and find a paring knife with a larger handle.

  2. This replaced my Henckel 4 inch paring knife, which could never stay sharp. So for the Global works a treat. I'll probably need to get a stone to keep it as sharp as it was when it arrived, but a standard steel keeps it easily sharp enough to use. I don't know why I ever hesitated to buy one.

  3. Global knives are top of the line. Beautiful ergonomic style. High-end Cromova steel alloy for super stay-sharp blades

  4. As with all Global knives, the blade is outstanding. The handle on this knife is really too small though. I'm a man with medium sized hands and a touch of arthritis and find that it can be a bit cramp inducing to peal more than a few pieces of fruit with this knife. Our other Global knives are excellent to my hand.

  5. I have owned and used my set of Global Knives for 5+ years now and have enjoyed using them.

One of the good things about Global knives is that they keep an edge much longer than do other knives. This is achieved by using a very hard steel alloy.

The down side of this is that hard steel is very brittle and care must be taken not to subject the blade to twisting forces or impact/shock.

My wife dropped my utility knife from waist height onto the kitchen floor and the blade broke in half.

This is not covered by the global warranty.

  1. Like all globals this knife is perfect. Looks good and feels good and sharp as a tack. Thanks Global.

  2. This was the second Global knife I ever bought. I've had it for many years, and the serrated blade keeps it cutting like the day I first took it out of the package.

Besides cutting bread, which it handles in a Godly fashion, this has always been my knife of choice when cutting large roasts, turkeys, meatloaf, and even cakes. The serrated blade helps grip the meat as it slices, allowing for a perfectly thin piece every time. And with the meatloaf (as well as pates and terrines if you're savvy with the culinary lingo), it's the best tool to use without worry of the meat crumbling as you make each slice. I love using it for cake and even cheese cake because the long thin blade allows you to cut from end to end in one long slice rather than hacking at it with smaller knives that just weren't meant for the job.

So whether you're looking for a specific knife for your bread or roast cutting needs, or just another pretty knife to add to your collection, this is the knife for you.

  3. Buy this knife if for no other reason than it makes minimal crumbs when slicing baked products, less mess to clean. Also does an excellent job chopping chocolate.

  4. It is by far the best bread knife money can buy. You will not go wrong.

  5. I have tried a wide variety of knives out there. I quickly learned that Japanese knives are the way to go. After trying several Japanese brands, Global really stood out. I would recommend not only this knife but any Global knife to anyone looking for a quality knife.

  1. Top quality steel, right length & heft. The problem is with the handle wich is way too slender. When working with wet hands is downright dangerous.Practically you have to hold the knife with your fingertips(& I have small hands),even so the handle corrugation is not suffficient to give a firm hold.

  2. I bought this on a whim to finish my global collection.Quality is the same as all global knives but I agree with previous reviewer that the handle is too flat which make it awkward to use.
If the handle had more heft it would have been a great paring knife. Global skimped on this knife

  3. Easy to handle, nice grip, good balance, very sharp. The Global chef's knife is also awesome.

  4. This is the best paring knife I've ever used, always has a sharp edge and as a chef in a busy banquet kitchen at a resort it gets a lot of use!

  5. Sharpest Knife I've ever Had. The grip takes some getting used to, but once you do it's very easy on your hand. I totally reccomend this knife.

  1. I saw the knife block in a local store, however I liked this one because it is stainless steel. I looks great on my counter, and the knives cut well.

  2. Just the concept makes me sick to my stomach. Is violence something something to joke about? Aren't enough violence perpetrated by spouses and ex-spouses already?? Amazon should pull this off their shelves since this is a tasteless poor stab at humor. Pun intended

  3. Yes... marketing can and should be fun, but I'm not finding any humor in the way this product is marketed. Quite simply, it makes light of domestic violence. I am disgusted...

Amazon should take this one off of their site.

  4. I got this for the wife and she just loves it! Not long after she started using it she taped a picture of my face on its head, giving us both a good laugh, what a wiseacre! She cooks a lot more now that I got it for her so it has benefits for me, as well. I often find her standing in the kitchen for hours just taking the knives out, honing or sharpening them, and putting them back in.

She's so happy I sometimes wake up in the middle of the night with her standing over me sweating with a wide-eyed grin on her face. All-in-all a fantastic product!

  5. This was a graduation gift and she loved it. Right away we knew she shouldn't be handling knives but it was a special occasion. Delivery was prompt and the product was in great condition. Great gift idea.

5 comments about Global 7-Inch Hollow-Ground Santoku.
  1. I haven't purchased the 7" Santoku but I've tried it out. I own a 5" Utility from Global and LOVE it. The handle is not slippery. It is all one piece so easy to keep clean and very durable. I'm not so concerned about how sharp a knife is when I get it because I send them to our local bladesmith. It does hold an edge relatively well though and cuts through meat and vegetables with ease when sharp. The reason I can't give this Santoku a 5 star rating is it doesn't have the tapered handle like the one I own and my hand tires more easily with this knife than those with the tapered handles, which is extremely important to me, especially when I have a lot of prep work to do.

  2. I was in the market for a 6 to 7 inch hollow ground santoku...my budget was $100 or less. I narrowed it down to 2 knives: the global and the mac. I loved both - but I liked how the global was all stainless - and i liked how it felt.

I actually have the Kitchenaid Santoku - which was around $17. It cuts nicely, but the global is oh so much sharper and just feels so much better.

Unlike the other reviewer, it does NOT feel slippery to me....i love the grip - i love how it feels - and it slices/chops/dieces like a DREAM.

Seriously though - you have to have some respect for this knife. It is incredibly sharp so please be careful. You will wonder how long you were able to survive w/out it - and it will make chopping onions...herbs....veggies etc. seem like you are cutting into butter. It is just so smooth and it is a complete joy to use this knife. i LOVE this knife.

  3. All I can say is, "WOW"! I truly love this knife. It's sharp, easy to handle, easy to clean, lovely to use.

  4. we are now global fans for life.
this knife is the best all purpose knife ever.

  5. Fantastic knife - extremely sharp and nicely balanced. I've been using various Wusthof and Henckels knives over the years and wanted to try the Global. I am impressed and will get one or two more. The 7 in size is great for cutting and slicing...a little small and light for dicing and chopping.

5 comments about Global 5-1/2-Inch Vegetable Knife.
  1. I have 3 Global knives. They are the best knives I have ever used. I love that they are 1 single piece of steel (except for the sand inside the handle). I really love this on in particular. It is light, has a great feel, fun to use and ridiculously sharp! I was gently wiping some water off of it with my thumb one day, and the blade slid against my thumb leaving a nice gash about 1/8" thick. Lucky it was at an angle and not perpendicular with my thumb, otherwise I would have bled a lot more. I highly recommend buying any Global knife, and this one is smaller and perfect for most chopping and cutting needs.

  2. there's not much to be said about this knfie that hasn't already been said except maybe its sharpening. Global knives, unlike german knives, have a convex edge. German/euro knives have a 'V' shaped edge, for comparison.

The convex edge cuts very well, as you might have experienced, and it last a VERY LONG time. Sharpening convex edges requires a different action/angle than 'V' edges. Common pull-through sharpeners are designed to put a 'V' shaped edge on knives and if you use one on your global you will trash the edge. Unless you use it until you obliterate the convex edge and put a 'V' edge on your global.
Global recommends against using a sharpening steel, not because of the edge, because of the material. Instead they recommend using a whetstone. Now, most people are not going to buy a whetstone and spend considerable time learning to properly use one. BTW the clips global sells to help you maintain the right angle while using a stone suck, and scratch up your knife.
Fortunately, global sells a pull through sharpener specifically designed for their knives called the minosharp.. Unfortunately, it cost $45. Fortunately it works very well.
I use a whetstone for my knives and other tools, and I can put the same edge on my global as the minosharp but it takes me 15 minutes instead of 45 seconds. After trying a friend's minosharp I had to buy one because it puts a factory edge back on my favorite knife in no time.

  3. My husband is a pretty good amateur chef which I highly encourage. I bought him this knife for Christmas and he loves it so much he is looking for excuses to chop up vegetables! We have never eaten better.
I am going to buy several more sizes so he will have a complete set.
He goes on and on about how great it is and how it feels so natural, slices so thinly and accurately, etc...

  4. It's high time to replace my Wusthof set and I no longer live near retailers where I can test-drive these knives prior to purchase; so I decided to order both this knife and an equivalent style from the Shun Ken Onion line to gauge their sharpness, ease of use and their feel in my hand before committing to buy several from either line sight unseen. Well, I haven't unwrapped the Shun yet, but this Global had its debut today with some thick, tough broccoli stalks and I was very impressed. This was a completely different experience from holding (or should I say forcefully grasping) a Wusthof.

I first had to adjust my expectations, and then my actual grip. The metal handle has a substantial (and surprising) amount of traction and I didn't find it at all slippery. It felt well balanced in my hand and I didn't need to apply a lot of pressure in order to control it. In fact, the gentler the grasp I engaged with it, the smoother and more effective was its action. My grip was firm but light, and the formidable blade slid through the tough broccoli as if it were butter. My previous knives required heavy sawing motions and considerable pressure on my part even when the blades were freshly honed and sharpened; which was very fatiguing and frustrating, and made a tiring, time-consuming chore of an otherwise simple task. The lethal blade on this beast is almost frighteningly sharp and effective, but I felt no imminent slippage or danger while holding it; all of its slicing power stayed centered upon the vegetable and safely away from my hand. I should mention that I'm a 5'8" woman with a medium-large-sized hand.

I highly recommend this knife if you do a lot of chopping and need a knife that makes fewer demands on your upper body strength; spend a great deal of time at your computer keyboard and experience any wrist fatigue; or just want to make your prep time in the kitchen a breeze and a pleasure.

The Ken Onion will have its day shortly and I'm eager to try it; but in the meantime, this Global is my new partner in vegetable carnage.

  5. One cannot go wrong with any of the Global knives. This one ranks up there for fruits and veggies. Such a breeze to slice.

  1. I Have wanted Global knives for a long time, I am heading home on vacation from "the big sandbox" and decided i would finally treat myself to a nice set of knives. I have had the opprotunity to use them in the past. i know they are a great piece of gear.

  2. These knives are the best addition for people who love to cook! They are light and fit your hand like a glove! I highly recommend them.

  3. I've never had really good knives before purchasing this 3-piece set so I really don't have much to compare it to except the cheaper knives I am used to using. These Global knives are nice: sharp, excellent quality, well balanced. They are obviously of high quality and I have no regrets about this purchase.

  4. These are so sharp, and well balanced. I was given a MAC knife years ago and loved it and I'm so glad I found another one. I love them!

  5. I did a good deal of research before buying these knives. I was really just interested in the chefs knife, but I am glad I got the package. These are by far the sharpest knives I have ever used. At times they seem to slice through vegetables like they are not even there. The chefs knife by itself is worth the price. I tend to use the utility knife almost as much though. The handle on the paring knife is kinda awkward and skinny, but I am the only one who seems to mind.

All considred. Freaking great knives!!!. I am sure the 8 inch will be my favorite for a long long long time.

  1. I bought The Ex strictly because of the holder. To my delight, the knives are good quality. I made hot wings yesterday, and cutting through them was like butter. I had The Ex on my wish list for two forevers, I only wish I had gotten it sooner. You won't be disappointed. The ONLY caveat I would mention is to be sure to measure the distance between the countertop and your cabinets. The Ex is tall. Mine fit snugly, but if you have low cabinets, you might have a problem.

  2. Makes a great addition to my kitchen. The all stainless steel knives are great quality and you won't find a more unique block to hold your cuttlery. Not for everyone, but if you have a sense of humor this set makes a great gift.

  3. This is a great item. The surprise is the high quality of the knives. I bought it as a conversation piece and expected the knives to be average or poor quality, but they are heavy, sharp, sleek and high quality. This is the 3rd purchase of this item I have made, one for myself and 2 gifts.

  4. I have had my eye on this fella for awhile. I broke one of my current knives (Ginsu, by the way, they suck) and caved and bought this. The I expected sub-par knife quality, figuring I could replace the knives at a later date. For me the charm was all in the voodoo man holder (sorry can't call him "the ex" I don't have an ex). I was pleasantly surprised when he arrived. The knives are fantastic!! The quality of the knives far surpasses the ginsus I have. You would NEVER be able to find knives this sharp for this price anywhere else. Don't forget about the holder!! He's awesome too! He's hard plastic, but very sturdy. Some of the other reviewers complained about his height (too tall), but he has to hold 5 knives, he wouldn't be able to do that if he was any shorter. So bottom line: yes, come for the rockin' voodoo man knife holder, he does not disappoint. But rest assured the excellent quality of the knives makes the total package well worth the investment!!

  5. So my wife basically got to choose everything that was in our living room, kitchen and bedroom (less the home theater system) -however, i asked her if i could choose the knife set whith this set in mind - she conceded probably not knowing what i was going to get

needless to say she was surprised which is worth it to some degree anyway and the knife set is pretty cool - i am not real sure how great a knife set this is, but it seems like it is of good quality - it has worked pretty well the few times i have used it & it includes a 2 year warrenty - the actual knives are stainless steel and the blade & the handle are one piece)

however, the purpose of the set is to stand out and it does just that - the actual body of the set is hard plastic (i bought the black one)although it doesnt seem like it is super sturdy, but it is good enough - please make sure you have enough room under your cabinet too - it is a little taller (check this, but it may be as tall as 15") than other sets

5 comments about Global 8-Inch Cook's Knife.
  1. I've been using a Wüsthof Culinar 8-Inch Cook's Knife for the last 3+ years. It's been a good knife but has not kept it's edge as much as I would have liked. I was also just getting into cooking 4 years ago. Now, I had the opportunity to choose the knife that fits how I cook and want to grow in the kitchen.
This knife is sharp. Very sharp. If you do research on knives you'll find that Global knives are sharpened straight and not beveled like most German knives. Meaning that the angle is very steep. The knife is light weight. Holding this compared to my Culinar is like night and day. This knife will take over all chopping and slicing duties in my kitchen from now on.
So, to summarize, these are the biggest selling points to me:
    - very sharp
    - keeps it's edge longer than most knives
    - light weight
    - inexpensive compared to comparable German knives
    - looks cool

  2. I bought this for my boyfriend (the chef & foodie) for Christmas. He loves it!! This is the best knife we have ever owned.... and it is beautiful!

  3. I recently had a house guest that told me this was the best knife he had ever found. On his recommendation, I bought this one and I must agree. It is thus far, the nicest knife I have ever used.
Of course, the test will be in how long it stays sharp.

  4. I recently acquired one of these from a local store. The clerk highly recommended it for it's ease of sharpening and retention. The knife is wonderful! I've never used a knife so sharp, and this is factory sharpened, not even professionally done. The knife is light weight, so it is more about precession than power. It balances wonderfully, and the grip is great. All together a wonderful piece for any kitchen. I plan on acquiring a whole set as my budget allows.

  5. After doing a lot of research into knives, I finally decided to go with Global for a new knife to replace a cheap santoku I've been using until I saved up for a proper knife. As a young cook in a moderate-volume fine dining establishment, this knife has been a godsend. The light weight and perfect balance making any rote prepping less tiresome and the sharpness cannot be beat. This knife glides through pretty much anything without any real pressure being used. I'll be looking into other Globals in the future for expanding my collection of work knives. For the time being, it's a great utility knife.
