- I purchased one of these cleavers on a visit to Hong Kong in 1990, and it has become an indispensible part of my kitchen equipment. It sharpens easily and I can cut just about anything with it. Every person who sees me working with it asks where I got it, and I've given several away as gifts. Now I can tell my friends to check out Amazon to find their own!
- I used to have a cleaver with wooden handle but those break over time; I definitely like that the handle and the knife blade are one piece. Very sharp and great to scoop things up after you're done chopping. I've thrown it into the dishwasher w/o any problems. Most asian stores will have it if you want it right away.

- Top rated by Cooks Illustrated. Great balance. Cuts easily through bones. My first practice ended up with some nice marks in my wooden chopping board. Will last a very, very long time.
Save your chefs knife and use this to cut through bones.
- I use this cleaver regularly when cutting chicken up including chopping through bones when prepping for stock. It works very well, is a great weight, heavy enough to cut without becoming tiring. I have brought it with me half way around the world, which should speak for it usefulness.
It chops bones, bangs through half frozen carcasses when necessary and is worth every penny.
- While this piece lacks the razor sharpness of other Global offerings, it makes up for it by being able to split bone without chipping. I've only used it on poultry to date, but I have no doubt it'd be able to hack through larger game without issue. I still prefer the butcher's bone saw for chops, but when appearances don't count there's no beating the noble cleaver.

- i have used this cleaver for one month and love it. it is a nice cleaver for cooking asian food. nice size and weight!
- Very sharp! Not much effort needed to chop boney parts of meat! I was unsure about what I was getting when I bought it but now I can assure you if you're looking for a cleaver that does the job and fits your budget, you MUST get this! Very very happy with my purchase.
- This cleaver is of good quality, but the design of the blade is poor. Since the blade is curved, unlike the blade of a Chinese cleaver, it is not possible simply to chop without drawing the blade back and forth, even several times. Minching is out of the question.
- The veggie cleaver was a gift for my father. He loved it! He saw how fast he could cut veggies for our meal. He was so happy. Its light and easy to use. Plus a great addition to his knife collection. He was very impressed with the knife.
- I bought the vegetable cleaver for my wife for Christmas. She loves it! She finds it easy to use and easier to use than other knives.

- I've hacked open over a dozen young coconuts with this thing and it still seems to be going strong. It's heavy and solid.
- This Chinese cleaver is beyond my expectations, having purchased another one at a Chinese grocery. It is heavy! Solid stainless and brass - not only a work of art, feels right in the hand, and being so solid opens young coconuts so much better than my first cleaver. Love it. Definitely a gift item.
- This is a nice, heavy cleaver; really solid. It's almost a full 1/4" thick along the back of the blade, and the tang is full-width; the handle is all-metal, two shaped pieces of brass secured to the tang. The overall feel is very sturdy. The cleaver also has a hole for hanging.
This knife performs well for all kinds of cutting. Obviously it works well for heavy jobs like opening coconuts or hacking up meat still on the bone, but I was surprised at how well it does more delicate cuts, too. I was able to reduce a steak to thin slices for stir-fry very quickly -- the weight of this knife will carry it halfway through a cut on inertia alone, and then an easy slicing motion will finish the job, again with the weight of the blade doing the work.
Overall a great knife to add to even a small collection of kitchen tools, and an absolute steal at this price.
- The picture does not do justice to this product. It is well made, well balanced and very sharp. It arrived promptly, and well before visiondecor's estimated arrival date.
- For the low price, compared to other cleavers, this cleaver is heavy duty and does not appear to be stamped/flimsy sheet steel. Excellent heft for chopping, dicing, julienning, etc. Fast shipping.

- Henkels has a reputation for high quality cutlery for over a century. This knife is no differant. The quality and value is excellent.
- This well-balanced tool came razor-sharp- it has cut everything presented to it so far. And it is attractive, in a knify sort of way. I am a little concerned that I may not be able to restore it to proper sharpness when required - I sure hope I don't have to buy a sharp one every time it gets dull!
The only small negative is the handle shape. I am getting arthritis, and the handle is quite squared-off - so that the corners hit my hand in a less than comfy way. This is minor, especially since a cleaver is for heavy cutting, and is not wielded for long periods of time.
I am quite happy that I decided to spend the money for this cool tool.

- First off, it's a little bit confusing figuring out which of Henckel's lines this cleaver belongs in. Amazon's site doesn't say it's a Pro S blade, but when I put the product # into the Henckel site it actually came up with 2 different descriptions for the same blade - one said Pro S, the other did not. When the product arrived I confirmed that it DOES say "Pro S" on the blade itself, so I think I am justified in comparing it to the rest of the Pro S line in my review.
When I decided to get a good meat cleaver, I was debating between this and the 5-star. Generally speaking, comparable knives within the Pro S and 5-star lines are essentially identical in terms of quality, with the only real difference being the handle, which comes down to personal preference. Prices are generally quite similar as well, which is why I couldn't figure out why this blade was significantly cheaper than the 5-star cleaver. Because of the price difference, and because all my other knives at home are Pro S (and I like to have the handles match), I went with this one.
When it arrived, I discovered that while this is a nice all around cleaver, it is NOT comparable to any other knife in the Pro S line because the blade is NOT forged steel, but steel sheet.
Despite this, I'll admit it is a pretty nice cleaver, it has a nice weight to it and it works well. But it simply doesn't belong in the Pro S line, and it's a lower quality product than the (justifiably more expensive) forged steel 5-Star meat cleaver. If I could do it again, I'd order the 5-Star. If you're on a budget, this is still a very nice cleaver for the price.
If this blade wasn't mislabeled as a Pro S knife I would give it 4-stars, but because it says Pro S I think it should have Pro S quality and it simply does not.
- Very good product. My wife and I have both used it and it does everything we want it to!
- This is a great knife. A little on the small side, but it cuts through big chunks of meat with ease. I used it last night on a mango that was frozen solid. While it didn't slice through it like butter (a frozen mango is about as hard as granite), it got the job done quickly and efficiently.
It's very well balanced and it's sharp enough for a variety of tasks around the kitchen beyond chopping meat. I've used it to thin-slice tomatoes, open coconuts, and dice garlic. You won't be disappointed.

5 comments about Global 5-1/2-Inch Vegetable Knife.
- I have 3 Global knives. They are the best knives I have ever used. I love that they are 1 single piece of steel (except for the sand inside the handle). I really love this on in particular. It is light, has a great feel, fun to use and ridiculously sharp! I was gently wiping some water off of it with my thumb one day, and the blade slid against my thumb leaving a nice gash about 1/8" thick. Lucky it was at an angle and not perpendicular with my thumb, otherwise I would have bled a lot more. I highly recommend buying any Global knife, and this one is smaller and perfect for most chopping and cutting needs.
- there's not much to be said about this knfie that hasn't already been said except maybe its sharpening. Global knives, unlike german knives, have a convex edge. German/euro knives have a 'V' shaped edge, for comparison.
The convex edge cuts very well, as you might have experienced, and it last a VERY LONG time. Sharpening convex edges requires a different action/angle than 'V' edges. Common pull-through sharpeners are designed to put a 'V' shaped edge on knives and if you use one on your global you will trash the edge. Unless you use it until you obliterate the convex edge and put a 'V' edge on your global.
Global recommends against using a sharpening steel, not because of the edge, because of the material. Instead they recommend using a whetstone. Now, most people are not going to buy a whetstone and spend considerable time learning to properly use one. BTW the clips global sells to help you maintain the right angle while using a stone suck, and scratch up your knife.
Fortunately, global sells a pull through sharpener specifically designed for their knives called the minosharp.. Unfortunately, it cost $45. Fortunately it works very well.
I use a whetstone for my knives and other tools, and I can put the same edge on my global as the minosharp but it takes me 15 minutes instead of 45 seconds. After trying a friend's minosharp I had to buy one because it puts a factory edge back on my favorite knife in no time.
- My husband is a pretty good amateur chef which I highly encourage. I bought him this knife for Christmas and he loves it so much he is looking for excuses to chop up vegetables! We have never eaten better.
I am going to buy several more sizes so he will have a complete set.
He goes on and on about how great it is and how it feels so natural, slices so thinly and accurately, etc...
- It's high time to replace my Wusthof set and I no longer live near retailers where I can test-drive these knives prior to purchase; so I decided to order both this knife and an equivalent style from the Shun Ken Onion line to gauge their sharpness, ease of use and their feel in my hand before committing to buy several from either line sight unseen. Well, I haven't unwrapped the Shun yet, but this Global had its debut today with some thick, tough broccoli stalks and I was very impressed. This was a completely different experience from holding (or should I say forcefully grasping) a Wusthof.
I first had to adjust my expectations, and then my actual grip. The metal handle has a substantial (and surprising) amount of traction and I didn't find it at all slippery. It felt well balanced in my hand and I didn't need to apply a lot of pressure in order to control it. In fact, the gentler the grasp I engaged with it, the smoother and more effective was its action. My grip was firm but light, and the formidable blade slid through the tough broccoli as if it were butter. My previous knives required heavy sawing motions and considerable pressure on my part even when the blades were freshly honed and sharpened; which was very fatiguing and frustrating, and made a tiring, time-consuming chore of an otherwise simple task. The lethal blade on this beast is almost frighteningly sharp and effective, but I felt no imminent slippage or danger while holding it; all of its slicing power stayed centered upon the vegetable and safely away from my hand. I should mention that I'm a 5'8" woman with a medium-large-sized hand.
I highly recommend this knife if you do a lot of chopping and need a knife that makes fewer demands on your upper body strength; spend a great deal of time at your computer keyboard and experience any wrist fatigue; or just want to make your prep time in the kitchen a breeze and a pleasure.
The Ken Onion will have its day shortly and I'm eager to try it; but in the meantime, this Global is my new partner in vegetable carnage.
- One cannot go wrong with any of the Global knives. This one ranks up there for fruits and veggies. Such a breeze to slice.

- great weight; ok balance; well-made; good quality metal; for the price - a great bargain.
- Use this cleaver to chop chicken and turkey parts for my dogs. I buy necks, backs and parts from the local Asian market. I also buy whole turkeys when they are on sale. The cleaver easily cuts through all the bones with little effort. For under $20.00 I didn't expect the level of quality and the weight of the cleaver, I expected something light and cheap, but was pleasantly surprised by the quality. I use this cleaver nearly every day and would buy it again.
- I bought this solely for opening coconuts. It does a good job. The point end near the handle is perfect for gouging a hole to drain the liquid, and then the blade gets the top off. I have wusthoffs for my other knives, but didn't need anything fancy for this purpose. Great value.

- I was surprised to find it this cheap. I am very impressed with it, although it is not 2-3 stars. It works great! with chopping bones.
- a good shopping experience. fast delivery. product as advertised. an excellent product. 100% satisfied with all.
- I love this knife! I use it for vegetables, meat, fruits, basically everything. The weight is just right and easy to clean.
- For the money it's not bad. Of course you can buy a better steel but this one will do.
- I am a Chinese. The meat cleaver is my chef's knife. I'm using it everyday, cutting from scallion to pork. I even use it peeling the skins of ginger or potato. It's very comfortable using this knife. I highly recommend it.

- I cannot recommend these knives enough. My favorites are this veg knife and the tomato/cheese knife. These are infinitely better than the expensive knives sold at specialty stores. They stay sharper longer and are incredibly lightweight. The tomato knife will yield thinner, more exact slices than you ever thought possible.
- I had high hopes for this knife since all my previous knives were cheap. However, it didn't deliver. It is good for slicing things like potatoes or onions, but if a vegetable has a skin, such as a tomato or bell pepper, it does not cut through the skin very well. I ended up getting another knife, and I only use this one on occasion.
- I have had my knife for 3 years, I have the pink meat knife that I love not quite as much and bought the purple knife today. I would love to purchase myself a $300 knife seriously, but this is by far the best knife I have ever had. It makes chopping and dicing veggies a breeze and I love it. And for $20 replace it, in 3 years it has dulled a bit, but never been sharpened. Fabulous.
- I have a whole collection of these Komachi knives. They are the best, easy to clean, so sharp and great in use. No regrets of spending money for them. Once you try them in use, other knives you have will "rest in peace":) Just don't throw away a plastic package they come from, you can use it as a storage, this way knives will stay unscratched.
- I love this knife. It is sharp, lightweight, and fun. By far the best knife I own. However, after only three days of use on fruits & vegetables (greens, onions, tomatoes, squash, melon), it the green on the blade has begun to pit & peel. What a disappointed. I am returning this item to Amazon, and I'll continue my search for set of an affordable, quality knives.
