5 comments about The Smart Money Guide to Buying a Home.
- A quick, easy read and a wonderful reference for all home buyers. I zipped through it in an evening but have referred to it many times since I began my search for a new home.
- I recently bought three books to help me purchase my home. I wanted a home to be proud of, but I wanted also to save money if possible by buying the home below market value. This book was the best by far. I believe I saved somewhere between $5,000 and $10,000 by being more "aware". It was very direct...totally useful. The de-bunking of the real estate industry was invaluable. I have passed this book to my son who will be in the market soon.
- I saw the author on a local TV talk show and after hearing her straightforward advice and encouragement for the single woman thinking of buying a house, I purchased the book. I'm just starting out on my house search, but thanks to the advice in this book I know I'm going about it in the right (and smart) way. I'll be a home-owner soon!
- This book may be slightly better than two stars, but with all of the overly enthusiastic reviews below, some balance is needed.
For starters, this book is very brief - barely over 100 pages not including appendices - and can easily be read in two sittings. Largely an overview with little detail. Thus, you're better off checking it out of a library than buying it for a long term reference. It also unbalanced/biased - it is obviously written by a realtor. For example, it does not address the issues concerning buying vs. renting and dogamatically assumes that buying is always a great move. While buying a home is usually a great investment, more of the risks of buying need to be brought up. More annoyingly, the book makes real estate agents (buyer reps) out to be white knights. Untrue! From my experience, there are far more bad ones than good ones and finding a sharp, diligent agent can be a real chore. And the authors claim that it is in your agent's best interest to be patient and find you the best house possible. Also untrue! It is in your agent's best interest to get you to buy ASAP with as little of their time invested as possible. Understanding the players and their motivations is key in the home buying process, and this book just isn't honest enough in that regard. It may be worth a trip to the library, but not a purchase. Of the four home buying books I read, "The Unoffical Guide to Buying a Home" was the best. More comprehensive and honest.
- This is the only good advice I gained from this book.
Also, to much focus on existing homes rather than new construction.

4 comments about Sell Your Home for Top Dollar--FAST! Design Psychology for Redesign and Home Staging.
- i've been leasing and buying and selling houses for twenty years. if i'd have had all of the ideas and suggestions in ms fisher's book when i started it would have saved me much stress and made me perhaps an exra hundred thousand dollars or so. i am rehabbing a house to sell at this time and i know this book will not only make me an extra three thousand dollars (minimum), but i feel it will sell in less than two weeks and probably a week. this is powerful stuff. you're not spending thirty dollars on this book, you'll MAKE easily 100 times that much from one sale using the ideas in this book. you won't be disappointed. this book is a true investment. get it.
- This is full of good tips and tricks and really helps clarify some of the important issues when trying to sell homes. It really helped me understand the basics of how to get our home to look its best.
- A picture says a thousand words. The chapters on colors for the exterior and interior have left me more confused than ever. This book should have color photos in that section with examples of how she coordinates the different colors in the rooms and the exterior for different markets. Sure the colors in the photos won't be an exact match of how house the looks in natural light, but they still would have displayed for us more clearly about the concepts. The pictures that were in the book are black and white and more for decoration. That's my only criticism. So I docked it 1 star, If it had pictures, it would definitely be 5 stars!
The book has many tips and tricks to help the homeseller, even some that are inexpensive. They will give you the look of having spent alot of money, without actually having to spend alot of money. I would include examples, but that would be giving away the book for free. An investor with a year of experience was thumbing through my book, she definitely thought it was interesting and will order a copy.
I am waiting for glossy photo picture book. Or maybe a photo blog from Jeanette on her rehabs. Or maybe a bonus photo CD in the next book. I'll be the first one there.
- Jeanette has written a very down to earth, easy to understand Real Estate book. You can take the information she has given us and apply it to your own Real Estate business. She is realistic and has alot of good ideas that can save you money as well as sell your property. Also she walks her talk. She has literally done exactly what she writes about in her own life. So it is tried and true information. I have read both of her books and the notebook and they are well worth every penny. A good investment!!!
