  1. I read this book in one sitting. I think it is remarkable, not for the techniques (nothing new), but that cold calling is so highly endorsed by someone who specializes in the high roller client base. I believe that the financial services field is the Army Ranger unit of professional selling. These guys make their living off a group of people extremely savvy and resistant to sales people.

His motivation is remarkable and made me want to get back on the phone. I appreciate his staightforward style and his comparison of cold calling with other techniques such as seminar selling and mail out leads.

    I highly recommend it.

  2. As a financial advisor who built his book partially from cold-calling, it was refreshing to see that somebody else understands that it is a powerful business builder. However, a lot of what I read appeared to be unrealistic. For example, the author claims to coldcall everyday, yet, has been in the business for 20 plus years and limits his practice to 50 households.

  1. At 33 pages, this is more like a pamphlet than a book. Unfortunately, the information in this pamphlet could have been reduced to even fewer pages.

Nevertheless, the pamphlet is worth reading because Harry Dent makes his now famous forensic economic forecasts based on demographic analysis. For anyone who has read his previous works, Harry's conclusion is very unsurprising, even predictable. By 2010, as the economy goes, so will the real estate market. He makes few other predictions which is also worthwhile.

Is this information worth the price of the pamphlet? If you are a real estate owner or an investor, then the answer is a definite YES. If you are not, then this book will not help you and you will waste your money and time.

  2. This is a very detailed analysis of the future trends in real estate based on demographics and other parameters that impact the markets around the country. The discussion includes a wide variety of real estate markets, including modest homes, upscale homes, commercial and leisure real estate all around the U. S. The discussion refers back to Dent's recent book "The Next Great Bubble Boom" so it is helpful to have read that one first. It is not light reading. It is a thorough analytic work, and often refers to graphical data which are included. It is probably most useful for professionals and others who are invested in the real estate market, either through ownership or through real estate related investments. One useful aspect of this work, is that it updates some of the conclusions in the book.

  3. This report is one of the most useful pieces of information I've seen regarding the big picture on both residential and commercial real estate. Mr. Dent's understanding of individual lifecycles scaled up by the immense Baby Boom generation sets this work apart from the herd. I particularly found the specific information about growing markets important. The many references at the end of the report really helped me find out what I needed to know about my own property and future investment opportunities. Terry Reid, President, Project Management Express, Inc.

  4. Probably very informative, but so dry and statistical that I have skimmed over it, but haven't read the whole thing yet.

5 comments about Be the Ultimate Assistant: A celebrity assistant's secrets to working with any high-powered employer.
  1. Everything you need to know to be a top-notch assistant is in this marvelous and entertaining book. Bonnie Kramen has written a fun, wise, and insightful guide to what it takes to assist an Oscar-winning actor. I recommend this book for everyone who wants to learn how to work well (or better) with people--which means all of us! This is a classic business reference that should be on every book shelf.

  2. Thanks to the knowledge I gained from the book - nine months into my new job I received an excellent performance review as an executive assistant and also as a personal assistant to a high-powered executive and his spouse. I especially liked the entertaining examples for creative problem solving and exploring options for pulling off miracles. I learned how to prepare for "whatever it takes moments" - and it worked. I saved the day for my employer when he was late for a plane. I loved the challenge. Be The Ultimate Assistant reminds us, "You don't get if you don't ask." I called the airport and asked if they could open up a few more security lines as the lines were really long and my employer was running late and might miss his flight. The lady I was talking to said she would see what she could do. The next email I received was from my employer telling me, "Never mind about the next flight, they opened up more lines." I just smiled and emailed back - "Yes, I know, I just talked to them." He emailed back - "You're a Star!" The resources in the book are worth the cost of the book alone. I love learning from the success of others -- enjoy the read.

  3. I own a search firm which specializes exclusively in recruiting Executive and Personal Assistants who are at the very top of their profession! I have been in this search specialty for well over 25 years.

Bonnie Low Kramen has written a much needed and delightfully entertaining book which shares her secrets to high level success as a top Executive/Personal Assistant. In spite of Bonnie's own great professional success and celebrity window on the world, she writes with humility, humor, and a warm and engaging style.

I have purchased many copies of the book to give to placed candidates. These are Executive and Personal Assistants who are all at the very top of their game. They have loved the book and..so have I!!

  4. Bonnie Low Kramen's book has become a valuable resource for me as an executive assistant in a high-profile investment firm. Bonnie's style of writing is one that makes you feel like you are sitting across the table from her, enjoying lunch and a chat while she reveals her secrets to success as an assistant. I have read the book in its entirety more than once and still pick it up often to read different sections, each time getting something new out of the book. Bonnie writes with poise and grace, which is obviously indicative of how she handles herself as one of the best celebrity assistants out there. This book is a must have resource for anyone who wants to excel as an assistant!

  5. This is a great buy for any one interested in learning what it takes to become a celebrity assistant. I read this book as research material for a film project and it was eye-opening to learn just how valuable the roles high-profile assistants play maintaining the lives of their employers. You don't have to work for a celebrity to use the tools this book provides. I highly recommend this book if you are interested in becoming an assistant, want to be a better assistant, or even if you want great tips on managing your own life more effectively, this book is loaded with great tips from the pros.

5 comments about The Stock Trader: How I Make a Living Trading Stocks.
  1. Tony Oz's rare and now out of print Stock Trader book is a truly unique book. This is the only book of its kind to actually show you actual executed trades (good ones and bad ones) over a few weeks time period. Complete with all the problems that will plague traders such as failing internet connections, faulty alarm clocks, etc.

This book didn't really capture my attention as I was first reading it. But an interesting thing began to happen nearing the end as I actually started to feel Tony's "rhythm" of trading. I suddenly felt that the books value went up tremendously at that moment.

Tony Oz focuses on the typical elements you face when trading: entry price tactics, stop losses, classical charting techniques, exit tactics, and psychology. While these topics are fairly widely covered topics in different books, the best thing about this book is that it simply allows you to get a feel for how a real trader USES those elements and distills them down to what's absolutely necessary and what's just textbook filler.

Daytrading books haven't really been published at all within the last few years due to the obvious fact that many traders were wiped out when the internet bubble popped. While many older books on daytrading have now become outdated, this book shows the common denominator in all successful trading, whether it be a bubble or a recession.

  2. OK, not one successful trader reveals his trading strategy but the Oz is getting pretty close. This book, to me has two things, honesty but inconsistency. The plus is that Oz is sharing pretty much of his trading method. But then again, his trading is inspired by gut feeling it seems to me. (i.e. the support and resistance levels detection) OK, I nearly every time agree on his entries or stops, but still...nah..

I liked his respect for the Ax(e) of each stock.

Oh yeah, whoever tells you his 'gut feeling system' won't work in today's market is a complete moron.

  3. This is without a doubt the best trading book I own and I own many. After many years of trying to find the perfect indicator that would solve all my trading problems I finally came to the realisation that simple works best in complex markets. Tony proves this using basic support/resistance and chart patterns combined with strict discipline to show how its really done in the heat of battle. I dont believe too many traders would be prepared to take on a challenge like this and put their reputation on the line. A brave man and an excellent trader.

  4. The information contain in the book is worth every penny I paid for. I had been day trading for the last 6 years and the foundation of my trading tool is based on what Mr Oz has taught in this book.
Of course, I have to combined several other indicator to confirm my stock purchase, however after many years this book was published, the method is as solid as ever.
    Thank you Mr OZ.

  5. This out-of-print book tells the real story of how a pro day trades stocks. Yes, the price tag is high but so is the valuable insights into the thought process of this successful day trading of Tony Oz during a major market selloff.

  1. Here is a book that is a must for all security supervisors in the contract and private sector in security. We all have to start with the basics when training new security supervisors and officers. Here is a book that can aid greatly to the end result that we in the industry are striving for well trained and knowledgable Security Supervisors and officers. All chapters of this book can be set to lesson plan for classroom study or chapters can be assigned to all and have them answer the questions at the end of each chapters. Excellent resource! As a Facility Security Officer for a DoD contractor complany, I find it to provide multiple layers of security or "security in-depth". This book offers insight from a retail environment that is very applicable to government and contractor security. Add this to your library.

1 comments about Presenting Learning.
  1. I've used the book in my own training consulting business and found it very helpful in presenting new ideas to management teams. It has been so valuable that I provided copies to key clients and friends for their own use.

For those not used to presenting ideas to management teams, this is quite an eye-opener. Most often we think that good ideas will rise on their own and be received with the full acceptance they deserve. We often fail to understand the culture and dynamics at work in senior management and how difficult it is for any idea to gather support on its own. This book does an excellent job of painting that picture and providing tangible ways to build support for new ideas.

While it is tailored to training roles and responsibilities there is no reason the information provided cannot be used for other functions in an organization. I've used several of the concepts during training for newly assigned Navy officers and civilians on how to work effectively at senior command headquarters.

3 comments about Learning Organizations: Developing Cultures for Tomorrow's Workplace.
  1. What is a learning organization? What are the principles upon which a learning organization is built? What is needed to develop a culture that embraces these principles? The concept of the learning organization began several decades ago, but only recently has it gained widespread recognition among business people and academics alike. This is in part due to the success of Peter Senge's 1990 book The Fifth Discipline and his pragmatic, step-by-step guide, The Fifth Discipline Fieldbook (1994).

Thirty-nine of the most respected scholars and practitioners come together to share a comprehensive explanation of the ideas, principles, attitudes, skills, systems, and infrastructure needed to create the ideal workplace of the future. Authors including MIT's Fred Kofman and Peter Senge, Harvard's Rosabeth Kanter, and London Business School's Charles Handy are recognized worldwide for their work in teaching organizations about change, systems thinking, organizational development, diversity, and total quality management.

The author's essays are categorized into five main parts. Part One: Guiding Ideas primes our intellect by posing questions and sharing ideas about what learning organizations represent. Part Two: Theories/Methods/Processes presents how stories, dialogue, coaching, systems thinking, and other learning tools facilitate the creation of learning organizations. Part Three: Infrastructure identifies some of the ways we must change what we do to achieve maximum learning potential. Part Four: Arenas of Practice identifies various workplaces and takes a look at how to build learning organizations within them. Case studies are used to describe how learning organizations are working in various organizational settings.

This book is written for practitioners, scholars, and active participants of adult learning environments. The principles and practices can apply to any organization that wishes to increase its learning potential, including businesses, schools, health care, and governmental organizations.

The rate at which organizations and individuals learn must keep up with the ever-changing environment that surrounds them. This is a global environment that requires us to communicate and learn from our co-workers, customers, clients, competitors, investors, friends, and family. Our world is becoming increasingly interconnected and it would be prudent to take advantage of that fact. We are not islands and as such, we cannot learn alone. The more skilled we become at applying the breadth of knowledge and skills that are presented in this book on becoming a learning organization, the more prepared we will be for competing in the Knowledge Era.

  2. I've had to read a slew of leadership books for my doctorate -- as for a collection of thoughtful essays, this is one of the best. It's well organized, well laid out and has almost every major thinker represented. It's got theoretical parts, practical parts and questions for down the road. The essays span all types of learning organizations: schools, hospitals, companies, etc... It's a bit long, but if you take it piece by piece, this is a very enjoyable and informative collection. Highly recommended and well-conceived.

  3. As far as I can see it is a book all about different perspectives, a book that adds on to the list of books that focus on the theoretical and/or philosophical sides of learning organizations. As such it is a good book, with contributions from 40 acknowledged authors/researchers.
The book is built up around four parts:
    - Guiding ideas
    - Theories/Methods/Processes
    - Infrastructure
    - Arenas of Practice
The book is packed with lots of good ideas that may form a base for further exploration in the field. Most of it is well edited, even though there is some extra "fluff" in some of the articles.
It is a good introduction to "learning organizations", but I will hesitate to call it a "how-to"-book . . . .
