2 comments about Investor Relations: The Comprehensive Guide.

  1. I thought this was a wonderful book. There are a fair number of good public relations books on the market. And there are a few tomes about investor relations. But I am not aware of any that layout all that is included in this book about an investor relations executive (IRE) at a public company: his job description, goals, responsibilities, and minefields that he or she has to face. I found it interesting that the author chose to default to "she" when he referred to IREs. Women are traditionally thought of as filling public relations roles. But it is my understanding that investor relations (a highly specialized and technical subset of public relations) is usually worked by men.

I also found it kind of odd that the author called IREs investment relations OFFICERS. By calling them "officers" that seemed to me that the author was trying to catapult them up into the highest echelon of a public company's corporate team. I'm not sure that is the case in reality. While it is true that an IRE does hobnob with the CEO, the CFO, the public relations guru, and the company's Board of Directors (BOD), I'm not aware that the IREs enjoy similar status as these other executives and directors generally do.

As a discovery expert who has worked on a number of high profile securities fraud class action lawsuits I have seen firsthand how the organization charts for some very large public companies fit an IRE into the executive and director mix. And I have had to review the correspondence, SEC filings, SEC filing drafts, and other investor relations papers that a number of IREs have been responsible for creating, producing, and filing. I think typically the IRE is a subordinate of the CFO, but has dotted line responsibility to the CEO, BOD, and the public relations executive if one exists. And a PR executive more than likely will exist.

Overall regarding this book I must say it is a gem. It is very well written and outlined. And it logically flows from chapter 1 all the way to chapter 23. And it is packed with content. However, there were a few instances that if changed I would have liked the book better. Chapters 8 and 9 seemed to be related. I would have liked the book better if those chapters were merged and then the topic of SEC filings that they cover were expanded into three separate chapters. And Chapter 17 just did not fit for me. I'm not sure it should have been included. And if included, I think it should have been written from a different perspective - that of the IRE. There was a typo at page 89 regarding the Yahoo! Finance URL.

Chapter 11 on "Guidance" was great. And I liked Chapter 22 a lot, too. If I were writing the book I would have made chapters 18 to 23 part of an Appendix. They seemed to be add-on material for me when reading this book. 5 stars!

  2. I had a problem with this book from the very first sentence where the author asserts the goal of IR is to have the highest possible stock price. That is not the goal at all - in fact NIRI (the National Investor Relations Institute) was founded years ago to make sure that exactly that did not become the goal of IR. While it is tired to use the rash of large frauds in the early part of this decade as a warning, this really is the thought process that led to Enron (where the IR chief got to spend lots of time on the stand and get 18 months in jail for his part in keeping the stock price high). Even if those extremes are avoided, trying to keep the price "as high as possible" increases the chances of a crash and an eventual lawsuit - not a desired outcome.
So what is the goal of IR? It is to create the broadest and most correct understanding of the company. Then the market, and others, can understand what matters and what does not for the company - reactions are based on facts at that point, not on misperceptions. Some of the information in this book may help a less than savvy management team meet this goal. For example, it would be useful for them to understand the different types of investors. However, the book has tried so hard to be broad that it does not really give the breadth needed to support an all out IR effort. In the end, I think most people would be better off looking elsewhere for their advice.

5 comments about How to Make $1,000,000 in the Stock Market Automatically: (4th Edition).
  1. I've tried real money trades on dozens of
stocks using AIM. The profits were exceptional,
some reaching more than 300% in a six month period.

After spending 2 years testing literally hundreds of
trading systems using real money, I have now gone
back to AIM. It's definitely the best.

So enthused by Lichello's work, I created a new
algorithm based on AIM which is easier to use and
increases profits by 266% but maintains the same
level of safety. I have now gone on to use it with
more volatile, higher margin investment vehicles with
    results beyond my wildest dreams.

Thank you, Mr. Lichello. You have changed my life
    forever.

  2. After reading "How to Make $1,000,000 in the Stock Market Automatically" I put the system to use with a simulation portfolio from [...] using the $1,000,000 you get when signed up. The first year my portfolio returned 21% and after three years I am looking at a 10% average annual return. This is definetely the best investing book you can read. It takes the emotions of investing out of the equation, and if you have even the slightest bit of knowledge, or know nothing, about the market or investing, this book will show you a way to make money without putting forth too much effort. I recommend this book to anyone who is interested in investing for themselves instead of trusting those crook money-managers to do it for them and not showing any return.

  3. The formulas set forth in the book are very helpful and the book is easy to read. It is a good value for the money. I think the formulas would work well for a very conservative investor. The book also includes a formula for making periodic investments in mutual funds. I backtested the book's approach over the last ten years using the mutual funds in my 401(k) which are offered by American Funds. For most periods, the results were better for the book's approach than simple dollar cost averaging. Because the market is presently up significantly, the dollar cost average approach is currently ahead but the book's approach will be better if the market turns down.

  4. AIM works. In two years I have the numbers to prove it. Everyone should read this book. I use AIM for maintaining my accounts but I use "Rule One Investing" by Phil Towne for picking them. It is a winning combination. Good bye to the old 'buy and hold' method!

  5. When I first heard of this book, I thought it might just be another one of those overly hyped books. When I started to read it, within a few pages I realized this book contained some very valuable information. The more I read, the more impressed I was with the information that the author provided. The book provides a glimpse into what you need to do to become aware of your own investments. Sometimes it may come as a shock, which helps as that will provide the impetus to do something about your money. The author has a truly unique approach to how to buy and sell. It us not your usual method, but a very interesting and different methodology. One cannot help but be thankful for having purchased and/or read this book. This is, in my opinion a very important book for anyone and everyone investing their money in the stock markets and mutual funds. You will be glad you got this gem.

5 comments about Superlearning 2000: New Triple Fast Ways You Can Learn, Earn, and Succeed in the 21st Century.
  1. Before reading this review I will give you some idea of my background so you can judge my review on the basis of my experience. I am a multilingual language teacher and writer with a keen interest in accelerated learning techniques, and have been such for several years. I first became interested in Superlearning several years ago as a possible method for increaing both my own language learning rate, which is considerable, and that of my students. Superleaning looked like something really new and innovative, and, having read the original Superlearning book, I decided to buy several Superlearning products from their website, including the audio course, special learning cassettes and a language course produced by the authors and based on the exact procedures laid out in their books. I wanted to be sure I was doing it properly. I also wish to point out that the products are not cheap by any means, well, not in price anyway. In terms of quality of the materials, recording and presentatiom, I have never encountered anything so cheap and shoddy!

Five years later, and after even more extensive research and experimentation with the system, both personally and in my classes, I can only say that almost all of this system is a sham. It doesn't work. I used a language course produce by them, and found no benefit whatsoever in it. The only benefit I got was to use the course, which I would also like to point out is nothing more than 3 tapes and a very thin and cheaply produced pamphlet of words and phrases and, on occasion the recording did not match the transcript, was to use the tapes without the highly distracting breathing exercises and do it the old-fashioned way. I made my own tapes too, as per the instructiosn in the course, which was a vastly time-consuming process, and had the same lack of result as the "professionally" produced languages tapes by the authors themselves!

There is no doubt that proper relaxation, relaxed breathing, positive suggestions and classical music can have varying degrees of benefit on the students, but the method you will find in ALL the books and programmes produced by Superlearning leaves a great deal to be desired!

I was interested by another reviewer's reference to a researcher from Monash univerity and her work into Lozanov and Superlearning. As I don't think a text link is allowed ina review, you might like to do a web search for "The personal website of Uschi Felix" at Monash University for a lot more information about Superleaning and the validity of some of the claims made before you are tempted to part with your hard earned and get a disappointment.

Having tried to contact Superlearning with questions and complaints, I can only attribute the lack of service and, indeed, acknowledgement I encountered to the fact that they must get a lot of commenst from some very dissatisfied people! I urge you not to buy into this scam. You are being taken for a ride.

To those reviewers who are getting so excited by the promises in the Superlearning products, all I can say is try it and see. Remember - I was just like you a few years ago!

  2. I decided to pick up this book for the second time. I had
earmarked so many pages in it the first time a year ago.
The amount of great information in this book is amazing! Most people will find something in it to improve
some aspect of their life. This is one of those books that's
hard to put down. Buy it and begin a whole new process of learning. You'll be glad you did...

  3. I read this book when it was first published, and was inspired to try the techniques. I have returned to it many times since then for further inspiration. It is really sad to read reviews declaring that Superlearning is a scam; I would suggest that any tool - and Superlearning is surely no more than a tool - is only as good as the person using it. Or perhaps only as good as their expectations - and their intentions. For myself, I have used the techniques to radically change the way young students learn - students who in fact, had been described as having significant "learning difficulties." They gleefully proved the pessimism wrong. As a mature university student, I tried the techniques on myself, and achieved very real success - in the 90 percentile for a linguistics paper, for example, on one third of the usual study time.
The book needs to be read with an open mind - and the techniques approached with no preconceptions. By all means be analytical - but that means analysing ALL possible reasons for any lack of success; it is so easy to unwittingly introduce variables. My vote is for Superlearning as a significantly empowering technique.

  4. You might like this book if your obsessed with this topic or your totally new to it. I would have to say that these ideas do work, but little is actually offered for the size of the book. For me this was very basic and boring. If your a successful learner you probably already do or at least know the general ideas here. If your having trouble learning or concentrating this could be of use but there's nothing in particular that would make me recommend it. I'm sure you can find a more exciting learning course, but if not it will work in a pinch.

  5. A must for anyone who wants to learn how to run their brain efficiently.

  1. I have implemented several of the ideas in Grant's book and my practice is booming. I have prospects calling me! What more can I say?

  2. I have read numerous publications on building a successful financial planning practice. This is one of the better ones out there. This book is not only great at showing you creative and different ways to market your services, but also helps you put together a business plan and marketing plan that focuses on marketing. Some of the suggestions are brilliant and will definately help set you apart from the "typical" advisor. This is a great book to have close-by, and one that should definately be reviewed when creating your annual marketing plan.

  3. This book offers no marketing tactics. It stresses honesty and friends. THANKS GUYS...That helps. DO NOT BUY THIS BOOK. IT IS A WASTE OF MONEY! I can sum up the entire book in this next two sentences. "Our real marketing thoughts will be in our next book. This book is basically a teaser (like a movie preview), with no information and an exciting title."

  4. I am an experienced Investment Advisor and thought that this book was an excellent read. I really enjoy how it provided many real-life examples and not just theory.

A beginner would also find this book useful.

  5. Good ideas for someone to think of if you want to start a business or already have one.

5 comments about How Charts Can Help You in the Stock Market.
  1. I have read some TA articles and books before.. but many of them were explaining what would happen when a particular pattern is formed and for me, it was like memorising those patterns. But this book aims to imbibe the basics onto you.. the author gives you the reasons for the expected results eg.. he explained the resistance concept by asking.. how often did you bought a stock, saw that drop down and eagerly waited for the stock to regain the price at which you bought it, so that you can sell the stock with no loss on your part !! I really thought that this was simple logical teaching..
The 200 dma behaviour explanations are great !
    Highly recommended
    NB:
Given the cost of this, its even more appealing to buy this book

  2. This book as absolutely a perfect book to introduce new traders to charting. This book was written in 1961 well before stochastics, Willams%,force index and other new computerized indicators. However it is a great introductions to basic charting concerning resistance levels and support levels and how to read them. You will find explanations for head and shoulders formations, double bottoms, double tops, cup with handle and all the traditional patterns we look for. If you are a beginner read this book to get started. I learned a lot of these patterns on my own and made ten thousands of dollars off understanding when to buy at confirmed support and sell at the first strong sign of resistance. I could have made twice as much with this book to begin with. If you need to learn charting, buy it.

  3. while I have read many books on investing,I can enjoy one more book, as a person who has invested for 20 years or more,I can say a good read and interesting, yes you can learn from the book, however if you are starting out in investing ...read Stan Weinstein's secrets for profiting in Bull and Bear Markets,as an older investor and read many books from Amazon I like to keep up with new books out, this is a book that will open some doors for you as far as keeping up,but I prefer to keep it simple, investing is simple once you understand the basics,I go long in up markets and short the down markets...duhhh not hard at all, this book did open up to me resistance and support levels ,I did enjoy it ...if you are a seasoned investor ...go for it ...it may help on the buy and sell...and be able to predict a day or two ahead of time ...helped me in my trading...but if you are new to trading ...forget it ....good book...only two stars ...well not good for all investors only seasoned investors will enjoy this book, while it may flustrate the new investor...Happy Investing

  4. I was reading this book and it kept going against the grain in how one should really invest. Maybe this book will be good if you want to spend all your time day trading with little to no returns. I was very disappointed in this book's inability to look beyond what a stock really is - a real company. No where did I find any mention of researching the company that is the stock. A chart will not tell you if a company has good, strong financials or if management is good. You could avoid of a lot of losses before investing by putting some time into what a company is.

  5. as always AMAZON comes thru finding books of interest for all customer bases. shipping was RAPID as promised

  1. A good accompany piece to The Artist's Way book. Can't use this instead. So much is left out but she hits some key points.

  2. Julia Cameron's book was the reason I've been able to create plays, acting jobs! I can only say this: IT WORKS! I'm living proof! For anyone who is blocked, these tools used over years creates a strong powerful base upon which to create work! The Green Room

  3. Just get it.

The first chapter as I remember was a little bit boring for me and when I start complaining to my friend, she told me :"Just read it."
And that was the best advice she ever gave me.
I gained a lot of self-confidence as an artist and person, came to conclusion in a lot of things that bothered me for a long time, it truly gave me a peace of mind.

So, for you, my friend:"Just ge-e-et it".

  4. This is my second copy of this book. I've worn one out already. I cannot recommend this book strongly enough. It is life altering!

  5. I can't even explain how much change I've made in my life since reading this book. Julia Cameron says things that every artist wants to hear. The main things I've taken from this book are Morning Pages, Artist Dates and going on walks - those three simple things have totally centered me. I wasn't even necessarily diligent with all the other worksheets.

Even if you don't care to increase your creativity, it will help anyone to live life!

5 comments about Risk Management.
  1. I think it the best book about Risk management I read so far. I was impressed even by the way they treat market risk although it does not seem their main interest. The chapter on VaR is much better than a whole book on it. Great!!! Everyone should have a copy...

  2. I bought this book because some readers highly recommended it. I'm a financial derivatives strategist and risk management consultant. When a reviewed the book I disappointed in five main particular points: 1) The chapter on VaR is unsatisfactory and insufficient. The authors discuss this subject in a general approach. From my view point I have a preference for Jorion's Value At Risk. 2) There is no discussion about GARCH models, which decrease the importance of this book. I recognise "Risk Management" is a great book. It's a vast encyclopaedia of risk. 3) There's a great discussion of all types of risk, but without any practical solved case. This particular point demerit the seriousness and greatness of the book. 4) The level of mathematics in the book is a little advanced and without any support en practical cases, these poor numerical exercises and calculus tools are useless. 5) Montecarlo simulation approach is bad. There is a great discussion on this subject in Hull's Options, Futures and other derivatives, where the theme is practical, objective and concise. Finally and taking into account these five particular disadvantages, I'll give my rating to this book: 3 stars.

  3. This is an encyclopedia, and reading such things is not what most people, even when deeply interested in the subject are likely to do. It does provide a fair reference for specific topics, but this is not a subject one can really pick and choose.

VAR is the ususal starting point, and its famous authors (one of whom I hired for his skill in these matters) cover most of the bases in an interesting way.

  4. This book is the most comprehensive treatment I've seen of financial risk management, particularly from a banking perspective. It covers both the regulatory and practitioner perspectives of modern risk management -- it's a veritable encyclopedia.

It's drawn from the wealth of experience of the authors, who are well known in both the academic world and on Wall St.

I guess what I like most about the book is the inside look it provides at the various aspects of financial risks -- no other book does it better, and I found the discussion enthralling.

While mainly geared toward banks, the book also includes a fascinating chapter on risk management in regular corporations. I think the book would serve equally well as a textbook for a risk management course or a handbook for the risk management practitioner.

  5. I work in the area of Risk Management for over 8 years and I find this book still covers a lot of what someone in the area needs to know. I think it is rather a reference book, better written than the Bessis book on RM in banking and covering more things on Credit Risk, but still ... it is not a book one can read from start to end. It is good to keep on the shelf and read a chapter on a specific topic when necessary.

  1. Mr. Greer's breakdown of the "Seven Key Career Questions" should be the foundation for anyone hunting for a job. Whether you are just starting a career, or looking for the next step to take, Mr. Greer's book provides readers with the insider's guide to everything you need to know. Particularly important is his emphasis on the details, such as making sure your resume is readable and professional. Filled with anecdotes, examples, and invaluable information, "The Executive Rules" is a must-have for anyone looking for a job. It would certainly make a great gift for any recent grad.

  2. First off, this guy knows what he is talking about. This isn't some general job hunting advice book. Greer uses his experience in management recruiting and gives an inside track on how to get a high paying position in the absolute quickest time. The information in this book covers in depth nearly all aspects of the management/sales seekers employment process and provides direct and to-the-point strategies that will get your resume read by the decision makers.

The major thesis is that the job search is a process, and while there are many things you can't control, you can control your process and execute on your strategy to maximize your probability for a positive outcome, and more importantly, minimize wasted effort and costly time. This is a straight forward, to the point, no holds barred examination of the best and most practical process to find and get a job as quickly as possible.

    T. Greer has done an excellent job laying out the blueprint for an effective search that includes everything from who should write your resume, to interviewing, to what and what not to say and do when effecting a transition from your current job.

I was employed in three months in a great job. I highly recommend taking the time to get real about your job search.

  3. This is a wonderful read with tremendous amounts of hardcore advice that we should all take to heart. Mr. Greer gives you the unabated version of what most successful recruiters look for in a candidate. I keep a copy of this in my home office and I reference it often. After reading this book I ended up getting my dream job and I think it has also helped me to be a better employee. This is a must read!!!!

  4. Wow..The Executive Rules does RULE on how to land that top job. Anyone thinking about changing employment or needing information on how to find an executive position must read this great book. I give it 5+ stars.

  1. This book covers the very basics of trading sectors. It gives ETFs to use to track industry sectors, and also explains the value of buying the stock of the leading company in a sector. It explains the difference between trading based on technicals and fundamentals. It also explains how to sell short and trade options. This book is very basic and not for veteran traders. With the steep $30 price tag I suggest reading "How I trade in Stocks" by Jesse Livermore, or "How to make money in Stocks" by William O'Neal to get a better picture of how to trade stocks in sectors that are increasing their earnings. The bottom line is trade stocks in sectors where earnings are growing. Investors Business Daily is a great tool for this.
