5 comments about The Real Estate Math Handbook: Simplified Solutions for the Real Estate Investor.
  1. This book is intended as a reference for those in Real Estate professions, though it can be useful to anyone desiring a refresher course on both basic and more advanced mathematical applications. This book is very reader-friendly and explains practical math concepts that everyone should be familiar with, in an easy-to-follow manner.

Burrell takes the reader through the basics that make up the foundations of all math problems and then delves into mathematical concepts specifically pertaining to those in the real estate investment business. Building on the fundamentals, such as arithmetic, algebra, statistics and logic, Burrell gives the reader a review of principles necessary to understand more involved real estate mathematics. Other chapters include: interest math, investment math, income/property math, and analysis. There are plenty of examples to supplement each of the principles and the lengthy appendix includes a wealth of handy information that is perfect for using as a reference.

The best part of the book, however, is the chapter on computer applications. Burrell concludes this book with a chapter on how to perform the mathematical computations using Microsoft Office's Excel program. This is necessary information since it shows the reader how to apply all of the concepts they learned in a manner in which they can use on a daily basis. Again, there are plenty of screen shots provided so the reader can follow along easily.

A highly recommended read that teaches math concepts you will actually utilize!

  2. Although published in 2007--a year during which the Real Estate Market took a significant nose dive-- The Real Estate Math Handbook: Simplified Solutions for the Real Estate Investor proves effective for serious investors, including any current survivors of the recent slump who had enough capital to stay in the game. Others who may find this book useful: individuals who currently own or wish to purchase a home, amateur students of mid-level to advanced mathematics, and prospective graduate students preparing for the Graduate Record Examination (GRE).

A comprehensive, mathematical tour-de-force; this book explains the A, B, C's of Basic Mathematics, Interest, Investment Mathematics, Real Estate Mathematics, Income Property Valuation, Financing Mathematics, and related Excel Functions. A stellar introduction by Ken Lee, a Real Estate Broker, Author and Guru, excites and informs the reader. Since Lee includes a detailed description of each chapter's contents, readers can either opt to work through the book start to finish, or select and study certain chapters of interest.

Strong aspects of this book include: clear, detailed explanations of complex mathematical concepts; corresponding tables of information and data; demonstrations of how to apply some of the mathematical principles described; and the Appendices, which include excellent quick references. Readers will also find the chapter on Excel functions a useful and efficient time saver. Otherwise, each chapter of the book is significantly lengthy; readers should allot several hours to work through each of them. Also, the book does not contain any practice exercises (besides the examples, which already reveal step by step instructions and answers), which might have aided the reader in immediately applying the skills that he or she learned from the book. Nonetheless, The Real Estate Math Handbook: Simplified Solutions for the Real Estate Investor
is a must have for anyone serious about becoming a Real Estate Investor, and is highly recommended reading for anyone who currently owns or plans to purchase a home.

  3. The Real Estate Math Handbook is the ultimate guide for serious investors in real estate. Real estate agents would also be wise to study this book if they want to upgrade their skills. The book is hefty but complete. Pretty much all the math needed for real estate transactions is provided and common examples are given to highlight the principles. The author starts the book out as a math textbook, which is rather daunting and luckily can be skipped to go to the more pertinent chapters. The Table of Contents is broken down into the useful topics of Interest Rates, Investment Math, Real Estate Math, Income Property Valuation, Financing Math, and Exel Functions.

As a math book, the explanations and examples are clear and easily followed. The nice thing is that the examples are practical and relate to real situations that are common in real estate and investment transactions.

The Exel Functions chapter is a real bonus for a book of this type; it introduces the use of the computer program Exel to quickly solve equations.

This book also includes useful information that is not mathematical. Many of the terms and concepts used in real estate, investment, and banking are explained in layman's terms. The author has covered all the material necessary for the reader to make an informed decision about a potential real estate investment.

The Real Estate Math Handbook is a great reference book and will enhance the knowledge of anyone serious about real estate.

  4. Not just for those in the real estate business, this book
covers the basic mathematical (including algebra) concepts the average
consumer deals with across the span of his/her lifetime such as
interest, investments, property valuation, and real estate transactions.

I loved the reviews of basic math in the beginning, the overview of
Excel spreadsheets, and the tables in the appendices at the end. I think
those inclusions would be very helpful to the average reader - they were
certainly helpful to me! Anyone who struggles with math may find the
math overviews to be highly enlightening. However, a 'math whiz' may
find that part of the book redundant or boring, so they may be better
off skipping it and moving forward into how to implement that knowledge
in the real world of consumer finance and real estate.

Bonus feature for me was that a long-forgotten method for figuring
percentages and filling in missing information was included in the book!
I have looked everywhere for that method and could never find it. Not
even my math teacher and professor friends knew it. This is a fabulous
    reference book!

  5. In much of America and throughout the world real estate has historically been a sound investment. Like any form of investment, some people make money and others don't. There are many books, programs, and gurus out there that will tell consumers anything to convince them they too can get rich quick. Lifestyle coaches and motivational speakers say you've got to be an aggressive buyer, go with your gut instinct, be pro-active or some other buzz word of the month. The truth is that while some people get lucky investing blindly, the majority don't. The problem is you only ever hear about the ones who get lucky; creating a very false impression of what real estate investment can be like. This book covers what a real investor needs to know and what skills they need to have in order to make informed, intelligent decisions in real estate investment.
Nowadays people are smartening up. They realize that to make money as an investor in any form you have to know your stuff. Extensive study and research are important in any field. Unfortunately many people still neglect the more technical ends of things, the mathematics. And with good reason as most of it goes over people's heads. I know it does mine. It's too complex and difficult to understand. So we look at columns of numbers and figures in reports which will decide whether we're looking at a good investment or a bad one with only a passing understanding of what we're seeing.
This book covers basic real estate investment mathematics from the ground up. It starts out at basic elementary level mathematics and progresses through algebra, statistics, valuing income property, calculating interest rates, and figuring out technical analyses done with Excel Spreadsheets. It is based very much in the philosophy that by understanding the principles behind these calculations you will have a better understanding of how your money is being used and will enable you to make much more informed decisions regarding real estate investments, which will result in greater dividends.
The book is well written and covers difficult subjects thoroughly. I found the consistent use of terminology helpful in following abstract concepts as anything dealing with mathematics does not come easily for me. It assumes you have no prior knowledge of the subject and is plainly written to be more easily understandable.
The layout is well structured allowing different subjects and concepts to be easily and quickly referenced. I particularly liked chapter two involving different interest rates and how they are calculated. Everyone can benefit from that sort of information, regardless of whether you're an investor or not. All in all, this book is a great read that doesn't seem dry like most works covering similar topics. It also serves as a great read for people who don't use math much and need a refresher. I give it a perfect 5 out of 5 stars as I have found no flaws and have nothing negative to say about it. My only regret is not having this book in high school, it would've made my classes and SATs go a lot more smoothly.

5 comments about Strategic Supply Management: Creating the Next Source of Competitive Advantage.
  1. Strategic Supply Management provides a step by step guide to creating a world-class supply chain. By focusing upstream on the power of procurement, readers can learn to establish a solid integrated foundation upon which to build their corporate value proposition. Trent uses timely examples of real-world companies and supplies straight-forward assessment templates that, once completed, provide a comprehensive plan to develop a sustainable and highly effective supply chain. Injected with an occasional dash of humor, this book is a well-organized, efficiently-detailed must-read for anyone wanting to transform their twentieth century procurement function into the strategic supply chain required to compete successfully in today's world.

  2. This book is a complete guide to supply management for any purchasing professional or student. It effectively addresses all the pressures supply professionals face today and provides actionable solutions. The book provides a holistic view of supply management but also gives specific tools and identifies additional resources for more in-depth research. Specifically, I found the tools for supplier identification and selection and the tips for crashing the timeline for supplier identification and selection very useful. While this book is executable by more senior supply professionals, lower level supply professionals can benefit by it also. If you have been too busy to follow what others are doing, this book will give you the heads up on new trends that work. It's a fast, well organized and interesting read you can breeze through during the weekend so when you go back to work on Monday you can begin transforming your organization to a lean and mean supply management machine.

  3. This book is an excellent read for supply chain professionals and those wanting to understand the tools and practices of world-class supply management. Thoroughly researched, Trent provides the foundations and processes of supply management and supports these with real-world examples demonstrating how organizations have transformed their supply chains. The book is a quick read and the summary points at the end of each chapter are also a great reference for those in a hurry. Supply management organizations looking for sustainable competitive advantage will find this guide invaluable.

  4. This text should be required reading for every supply chain professional. It covers every important topic and trend in supply management and does so with a unique blend of theoretical analysis, industrial survey results and real-life examples. I was particularly impressed with the sections on supplier selection, managing supplier performance and the use of information technology to optimize and support supply objectives. From this text, I learned not only how to take a big picture, strategic look at the problem of supply management but what tools and techniques are available to help day-to-day execution of that strategy. You can quickly see from this text just how complicated supply management is and that a high level of interaction exists between many different functional organizations. Taking a short-term, isolated approach to this topic and ignoring the trends and advice offered in this text will make it very difficult to achieve long-term success.

I was very pleased with the writing style used by the author. It did not read like a textbook with listing of fact after fact. Instead, the author made the subject matter enjoyable to read and included some personal observations that stressed the practical aspects of the material. I would highly recommend this text to anyone who works in supply chain management.

  5. As a manager responsible for approximately $100 million in spend, I found that this book was able to effectively break down the complex topic of strategic supply management into manageable chunks. I find this book to be useful for the entry level supply chain professional as well as for the practicing purchasing professional. This book not only discusses today's best practices but it also lays out what needs to be done in order to prepare for tomorrow. I will be using the valuable information provided to improve our practices with regard to managing our supply base. It was well worth the read, and it will continue to be a ready reference for me going forward.

5 comments about Best Practice in Inventory Management, Second Edition.
  1. This book is useful. It is expected, however, to be revised in some points. There are some miss specifications in terminologies and in some chapters, explanations are not good enough to understand the equations or methods the auther used.

  2. Pragmatic view to inventory management

  3. If you work in stock control, sales, purchasing, or production planning and really do not have a clue where to start in order to maximise the profitability of your inventory (both raw materials and finished goods), then there is no better place to start than with this book. It gives much practical advice that is easy to implement in real business life and emphasises the genuine cost savings and improved cashflow that can be gained.

What I like most about the boook is its structure - it starts with the basics (why inventory control is important financially), and takes you through basic forecasting methods to more advanced levels (e.g. double exponential smoothing). You can implement most of the advice in Excel or similar spreadsheet. I am no mathematician and I must admit I found some of the formulas difficult to understand at first, but please do not be put off - perserverence will pay dividends and you will see this perseverence hit the bottom line!

  4. I bought this book expecting to find examples of new ideas developed recently by businesses that are considered at the top level related to assets management.
What I found was an excellent summary of all the textbooks used in college for the last 40 years. I could even find a chart we used in class in 1972.
Best Practices in Inventory management must include links to Manufacturing strategies, postponement of production to delay costs, improve flexibility for lower number of SKU's.
I find the title pretty ambitious but not enough "meat".

  5. The concepts are presented pretty clearly, however the author is a Brit and the terminology used throughout is a bit foreign to me. But theres a lot of information here for someone who wants to get an overview of what inventory management entails.

5 comments about The Great Investment: Balancing. Faith, Family and Finance to Build a Rich Spiritual Life.
  1. What a wonderful book. I bought this book when I neeed it the most. As a woman, I am my worst critic, and at times I feel I am not worthy of the wonderful things in life because of my past. T.D.Jakes words describe how God loves us regardless of our color, our pasts, the shape of our body, or our hair color. Its the size of our heart and the beauty within that is the most important to God. I learned through his words to accept myself as I am. I am truly grateful I have found T.D.Jakes! I realize now that I am a masterpiece to God. What a wonderful thought that brings !!

    Thank you, Karen Michelle

  2. Another masterpiece by Bishop Jakes! I was particularly impressed by his practical teachings related to financial matters. He takes a look at the two extremes - poverty and abundance. Rather than teaching 'pie in the sky', he shares the importance of financial responsibility by maintaining a budget and using credit wisely. He goes on further to discuss saving, investing and sowing into good ground. It's very inspirational to hear messages from the clergy that go beyond `naming it and claiming it', but rather teaches that there is a part that we must play in setting our financial affairs in order. Kudos to Bishop Jakes!!

  3. T. D. Jakes describes life as a journey in which some people pack more than is necessary for the most productive trip. He wisely advises carry three bags, faith, family, and finances. I think it is no accident that he arranges them in that order either. Faith is needed for this life and preparation for the next. Family is something you can take with you, provided they share the faith and finances encompasses effective stewardship principles that reveal what you have to show for your existence.

Although each of these subjects is familiar, Bishop Jakes sheds new insight in each of the three arenas. He builds to a climax in his teaching on Romans 8:28-30. It is worth the price of the book just to read what he says in the few pages devoted to that topic alone! He will build your faith because he speaks from the perspective of a credible source, i.e., it's lived it.

This book is comprehensive in that he covers both Old and New Testament teachings on the topics. He includes personal experiences. Bishop Jakes is even confident enough to be vulnerable in places, not one who claims in a phoney way to have all the answers. His advice is practical, doable, workable. I highly recommend this book.

  4. TD Jakes is deceived by wealth... see Jesus' parable of the sower. He is right to say that we should avoid both extreme's (poverty and wealth), but then he goes into how we can get a 100-fold financial blessing.

I'm very happy to see him expose the false teaching of the prosperity teachers. But how can TD Jakes live in mansions and have luxury cars when he knows his brothers/sisters in Africa (for one example) are dying of starvation? Truly, his conscience has been seared as with a hot iron:

    1 Timothy 4:2
Such teachings come through hypocritical liars, whose consciences have been seared as with a hot iron.

    Example, pg. 69:
"Money is to serve you, and you should serve God by using it according to His plan."

How is living in luxury, when our brothers and sisters are dying, spending money according to God's plan? That's what TD Jakes does; live in luxury.

Please, learn the truth from our Lord Jesus. He taught what stewardship is, in the "Parable of the Talents." Ten percent doesn't belong to God, as TD Jakes says,,, 100% does! We are to manage all of God's money for the kingdom, and only live on what we need (not want). That's the lifestyle of Jesus and His disciples.

TD Jakes is teaching people to be deceived by wealth. Those who are deceived don't know it, or else they'd refuse to be decieved. TD Jakes is deceived... just look at his lifestyle and seared conscience. What will he say when he meets his brothers and sisters in heaven, the ones who have died from starvation because TD bought a new luxury vehicle or another vacation home?

  5. T.D. Jakes is a wonderfully blessed man. In reading this book you know that he is touched by God and highly favored. This book was AMAZING. I looking forward to reading more by him. This book is well worth the five stars I gave it and I highly recommened it. I was touched, moved and motivated to get myself in order (Faith, Family, and Finances!!!!).

  1. By applying Gino's system, we have enjoyed over 30% growth year after year with high levels of accountability, leadership, and a system that continues to amaze us in its simplicity and effectiveness. Highly recommended.

  2. This is my 3rd start-up company and it is off to the best start. We are exceeding our projections and we know it is because of we are executing the EOS Process. From vision to project accountability, the system is both simple and comprehensive.

Much of my career has been spent in consulting so I have had the privilege to see how a number of companies are run. I have not seen a more effective operating system than EOS. Traction provides the details you need to implement the process. It's not just concept and theory - it provides instruction that allows you to use the process. I recommend Traction & the EOS Process wholeheartedly.

  3. I have put the principles of "Traction" into place in my business and now focus on the activity that earns us the most income. I use to be everything to everybody and spent too much time earning too little for too much activity. This book is a must read for all business owners!
