  1. I found the practice chanter hard to blow and difficult to separate. It looked better than it sounded. However the book and CD were helpful and easy to understand.

2 comments about Hohner Melodica Piano.
  1. This is a nice sounding instrument, that is fingered like a keyboard. It comes with two different styles of mouthpieces. The melodica comes in a nice sturdy case, is lightweight and is quite portable for traveling. The melodica is enjoyable to play and is pleasant to have with you, when playing a regular keyboard is not possible. The melodica is also a fun way to learn music and keyboard basics and does not sound tinny or unpleasant, if one is just getting started learning music.

  2. This melodica is nice because it's cheaper than Hohner's fancy professional models. And you don't lose much, it seems: it sounds like a melodica should sound, and it can be played with a reasonable degree of musicality, even by a novice like myself. The instrument comes with a little gig bag and two mouthpieces (a short one and a flexi-tube one). The construction and materials are of acceptable quality, I have no complaints.

Those of us with finicky ears are going to want to have this thing tuned, though. Music stores dealing in folk instruments ought to be able to do this, for a fee, or one can find DIY tuning instructions on the internet. Although the instrument is *mostly* in tune with itself, it will almost certainly need to be adjusted in order to play along with other chromatic instruments, or your Gang of Four records, or whatever. All that said, this would be a good instrument for the amateur musician or student to learn on. I keep it around for doodling and songwriting, and I use it on a home recording every now and then (whenever I feel like spending my time doing post-production pitch correction).

One final (miscellaneous) note: the sonic frequencies produced by this melodica are apparently unpleasant for cats to hear: mine get agitated and start to complain when I play it for them. I don't know if it's melodicas in general or just this one, but they don't like it. Anyone have any insight into this?

  1. I've had this ocarina for about, lets say 3 weeks now. Although I'm no expert at ocarinas this instrument sounds pretty good. I've played the Zelda games and have learned some of the songs off of the Zelda song book that comes with this instrument and when I play them it sounds just like in the game. If thats any consolidation to anyone. The only thing I really don't like is that when I got my ocarina I couldn't tell if it was blue or not, and, as it turns out, its a dark purple. That is the only thing that I really didn't like and I think I can fix the color, although, thats not supposed to be the consumers problem now is it. This is why I gave it a 4 out of 5.

  2. The ocarina is beautiful and the sound quality is very good. The included song books and instructions, which were written for this precise model of ocarina, were also very helpful at getting strated. I recommend this ocarina and this seller (STL Ocarina).

2 comments about Shofar, Synthetic, Mahogany Finish.

  1. As a strict vegetarian I've never been comfortable even attempting to blow a standard shofar. This one is an amazing replica (if I didn't tell most people, they'd never guess it is faux) and has a good tone without the foul animal smell of the regular horns. I am VERY happy with the purchase -- now I need to practice!

  2. This is a fun product. It takes some practice to learn how to play. Make sure you can exhale forcefully. Of course you cannot expect to play a "song." But the deep resonante toot is satisfying. They did a nice job on the manufacturing. The color and sturdynes is nice. It makes a great conversation piece.
