  1. First, this is not a written book; it's a transcribed one. Lotsa stream-of-consciousness & digressions that left me with the impression that Mr. Sahl was doing a night club routine into a tape recorder, & then somebody transcribed it. Who knows, maybe most books are written this way, but it's real obvious here.

Sahl was one of the first post-WWII political humorists, who cut his teeth on the beat-jazz subculture of 1950s San Francisco. Although by the late 70s, when he had a short-lived radio show on WRC in WDC (some of his best stuff was segue exchanges with Willard Scott), he seemed to have morphed into a right-of-center curmudgeon, he was originally an undogmatic radical who admired JFK, Castro, Albanian premier Enver Hoxha, & Ronald Reagan; as old-time Chicago radio host Jack Eigen called him, a professional nonconformist.

There is little here that was not recycled on his radio show. (He's actually hosted countless rado & TV shows in many cities.) Seven or eight years after the fact, there is little doubt that he holds New Orleans D.A. Jim Garrison in high regard, & if only 1/10th of what Sahl writes about being blacklisted for his association with Garrison is true, it's enough to make you swear off network TV forever. As Sahl writes, "Television is never more false than when it tries to be honest."

Lotsa inside info. on the entertainment industry & enough politics to shake the faith of the Gen-Xers that believe there's always been MTV & that American history began with Ronald Reagan. Despite the 30 years since since this book was published, when you read that a "social democratic President would have to bomb China to prove he's not a communist," there's an eerie prescience that might make you wonder whether those pop-op words "liberal" & "conservative" aren't being grossly misappropriated.

  1. I found this book fairly interesting in the sense that it is the first book that I have seen that gives an actual definition of harmonica positions based upon actual music theory. I think most harmonica lovers will definitely get something out of this book.

  1. Usually one who begin to learn trumpet does not know much about instrument itself. Many method book only describes shortly about this. Even there is no explaination! This tipbook may be the supplement for such problems. After reading this book, even novice can buy instrument by himself. I recommend this book not to only player but to the musician who is run for both knowledge and technique. This book has many good illustrations and is very readable.

  1. This book contains 63 pages of nothing! Nothing worth paying 14 dollars for! It contains a bunch of simple melodies in different modes and basic scales. You'll learn to play chromatic harmonica whole lot more if you studied with a basic theory/scale book and a song book of your choice (mine is "essential jazz standard").

  2. I recently switched from diatonic harp to chromatic. I have a few books on the subject and this one is just awesome! It has a cd that plays some of the included songs with harmonica accompaniment, and after you can play the song without the accompaniment. Then it shows you some songs that correspond with certain scales. My favorite part of the book though, is the 120 or so scales that are included in the book. There are 14 scales for each key of music. more than I will probably ever need but there is no excuse for not knowing the instrument if you can memorize a lot of them. I am thrilled with this book. It will be a huge aid in my developement.

  3. Scanty description of how instrument operates. Virtually no instruction in fine points of producing sound. Tunes written with blow/draw in/out coding ok but not worth the money. Disappointing rip-off. Hal Leonard should be ashamed.

  1. The Tipbook for Saxophone has saved me! As a music eduacation student, this tipbook has been a lifesaver when it comes to needing easy to understand, fast help. Whether it's learning to play, looking to buy, to reeds and mouthpieces, to fingerings, to their history...this book has it all. It's layed out in an easy to read format and even gives you other places to look for more information. I highly recommend this book to any music student or saxophone player!

  2. An excellent source of general information about the four most common types of saxophones. The book covers a broad range of areas about saxophones, such as buying a sax, selecting accessories, practicing, etc. Being a tipbook, it presents the basics you need to know without a lot of text background detail. It answered many of the questions I've come up with but had no one to ask. The text format is short paragraphs of 2-4 sentences with many illustrations on each subject. The material is very easy to understand and apply. As a self taught student, I found the book very useful and was glad I ordered it. I was also quite pleased at the price.
