5 comments about The Clarke Tin Whistle: Deluxe Edition (Book & CD).
- If you want to learn how to play the tinwhistle, then this is the book. Starts you out with the very basics and works you up to the more advanced. Bill Ochs is by far one of the best whistle players out there. Make sure you buy the book with the cd; hearing how the tunes are played will help you to learn a lot better then the book alone. This is the best instruction book I have every seen. Clear, concise and never overwelming. You will not only love to play the whistle, but love learning to play.
- This is a good book for beginners to start with. comes with a CD rom. I'll be able to follow through. Hope I'll be able to master it soon.
- I am just teaching myself how to read music and play the Tin Whistle. This is my second book purchased. I am finding this very user friendly. Even a novice like myself can learn , by listening and reading, then playing along. If I could, I would give this package 10 stars.
- This book is fantastic for beginning whistle players. The basics of music are explained well and are easily understood. Also comes with a CD so that you can play along AND helps you play by ear.
- I really enjoyed all of the tunes in this book. It helped that I could read music to begin. The process of reading music is explained briefly and not until after you've already played a few songs, but the CD would definitely help anyone who was learning to read the notes on the staff for the first time. I don't think this would be a stumbling block or a reason not to get it- just something to be aware of. One thing I really liked was that there are short histories and backgrounds on the style of music.

3 comments about Mel Bay's You Can Teach Yourself Accordion.
- I haven't played the accordion in fifty years and I was looking for something as a refresher. This book was just what I was looking for, it reviewed what I had forgotten and I even learned things that I had never learned in the first place. Nice selection of songs too, not a bunch of corny tunes that you never heard of. It comes with a CD and you can hear what you are expected to sound like after a little practice. I have several books on the accordion and most of them are useless but this is a real worthwhile purchase.
- I bought this book when I bought a new accordion and so far it has been great. I've never played the accordion before, nor do I know anything about it, but this book has been fantastic about explaining everything.
A good buy for beginners.
- I always wanted to learn to play a musical instrument- and this book has been a great help in my beginning to play one (having washed out on guitar and piano)...in fact, it makes it very easy to play songs very fast! Thanks for the great book- there is not that much accordian music written for beginners out there...

4 comments about 101 Saxophone Tips: Stuff All the Pros Know and Use.
- I gave it three stars because i found very usefull only half of the book. But for the price I'd say it's a good deal.
- This book was both very useful and very enjoyable. I was a serious sax player for 20 years, quit playing almost completely for 30 years, and started to play seriously again after I retired (or quit my day job, whichever sounds better).
There are tips about what to carry in your case, how to buy and maintain your horn, what your should practice, and more. This book contains stuff I knew, more stuff I had forgotten, and more that is new since I began playing again. There is a CD that shows examples and playalongs.
This book is ideal for beginners and serious saxophonists. I recommend it heartily.
- Interesting tips....
Check out Larry Teal's book. Great for beginners and intermediate players.
- This book is a bargain if you only use a few good tips that are shared. I've been playing alto for five years and got answers to questions I just couldn't get before. I studied under two real pro's but a lot of these tips were never discussed. The writer, Eric Morones, is a VERY accomplished saxophonist. I realized this when I bought his other book, 25 Great Sax Solos. He does all the sax work on that accompanying CD and he's PHENOMENAL. Knowing I was getting tips from this extremely talented musician made this 'Tips book' VERY valuable. Of course, not every tip is going to be an "ah-ha" experience, but buy the book if you're serious about being the best saxophonist you can be. Just five or six good tips is worth a lot more than the price of this book.
I've gone back into this book a few times since I wrote the original review a few months ago. This book is GREAT! I have started using LOTS of great tips in this book. It's like having a seasoned Pro mentoring you in your practice. Following the guidance and advice in this book will make you a MUCH better saxophonist.

4 comments about Suzuki Violin School, Vol. 1 (Piano Accompaniments).
- Suzuki Violin Series is a great series! Especially the fifth book. I've been studying by Suzuki Violin Series for four years. It's really great! There are some really great concertos, if you know how to play. And the exercises, like tonalizations and shifting, are excellent and really helpful. And with the piano accompaniments, it sounds great! Also, the fingering is very cleverly done, so you can practice a lot of shifting and vibrato while playing and practicing the concertos themselves. This book is excellent for intermediate students for violin, and especially essential for shifting practices!
- I found this book very good for accompaning my daughter with her violin. However, you must regard the fact that it is not for learning piano.
- All the Suzuki books are great tools for any accompanist as there are many Suzuki groups that need accompanists.
- I am so happy I found this book my kids just began a few months ago to take some piano lesson; my daughter plays the violin and this book make them want to play together

5 comments about Recorder Fun! Teach Yourself the Easy Way!.
- A really easy introduction to playing songs that sound good right from the start. Painless way to learn to read music. The accompanying CD works well with separable recorder and accompaniment.
- This book quickly gets the reader to play simple but imprssive enough music to get this person confident in one's abilities and interested enough to continue.
It also does a good job in easing a beginner into reading basic musical notation by starting with a more simply and intuitive version of it.
My only complaint is that the difficulty of the exersize passages picks up very sharply about half way through with no excersizes suggested that will get one's skill up to par. Playing earlier passages over and over simply does not do it. As a result, I had to look for the excersize information elsewhere.
- "Recorder Fun" contains an excellent choice of songs. The CD is of very good quality and fun to play along with. I used this book and CD to teach 2 of my grandchildren to play the recorder. They finished the book and we gave a final concert for our extended family! These resources teach you a lot about the language of music as well as how to play the recorder. I just wish they would publish one like it for alto/bass recorders.
- This is a great book of songs and tunes. Right from the start it has a CD you can play along with, so even when you are only playing one note, you have some good background music to accompany you. This is a great motivator for 5-6 year old children.
- This is a great book for the beginning player. I haven't played music for many years, and have never been able to sight read music. This book has helped me a lot in learning to read. The CD is also a great help to those who play by ear.

5 comments about The Art of the Native American Flute.
- "The Art of the Native American Flute" is both a comprehensive reference and a fun read. A reader with only passing familiarity with Native American flutes and music (read: has seen a photo or heard one played once) will easily be able to play the role of expert after reading this tome.
The book begins with information on the flute's historical and legendary origins. After this introduction, the reader is invited to look at a deconstructed flute and understand how all the parts fit together to form the whole. The authors discuss the flute's similarities and differences to such instruments as the pipe organ and the European recorder, and they also give a detailed analysis of how each flute's unique sound is produced.
The reader will go on to learn about care, cleaning and maintenance of the flute. Of course, the reader will also be shown how to properly play the flute (including topics such as altering tones and tablature-to-key relationships). After reading these sections, the reader can go on to practice any of a number of included songs.
The book wraps up with extensive lists of bibliographies, discographies and references, and even an essay on the authenticity of both the style of music and the instrument itself.
This book is indispensable for anyone who has the desire to learn more about Native American flutes. Get the book, get a flute, and begin to enjoy unique beauty of this wondrous instrument.
- I thought Native American flute music was from the heart, this book teaches writen music and memorizing notes. it was disapointing to me because thats not what i want to do. But for someone you does its a very good book.
- For anyone interested in a generic understanding of the Native American FLute they may find it here. However for those who would like to learn to play and have no prior musical knowledge they will find it a discouraging study...difficult to understand without first mastering musical theory. The most valuable parts of "The Art of The Native American FLute" are the musical transcriptions of Carlos Nakai's songs written in flute tablature. They are though beneficial only for the advanced player that can read.
John Vames, Author,
"The Native American FLute: Understanding the Gift"
- if you have a little musical background, this book will get you going in the right direction with your native flute. when i first started playing my cedar flute, everything sounded off-key. after reading carlos nakai's introduction and learning to play his tunes from the scores in the book, i understood the intervals of the native flute and which notes sound good in what patterns. Soon i was able not only to play nakai's beautiful songs but also to improvise on my own. being able to read music is a big help but if you have that skill, this book will give you hours of fun and learning.
- R. Carlos Nakai is probably the most famous and accomplished of the Native American flute players. This book is for serious players interested in investigating the subtleties of the art and for those interested in learning more about Nakai's contribution to it. Amateurs like myself will probably be lost after the first few pages.

5 comments about Marcel Tabuteau: How Do You Expect to Play the Oboe If You Can't Peel a Mushroom?.
- The book offers a much needed portrait of one of the most influential woodwind players in 20th century America. All students or teachers of music should have this in their library. The historical references and personal insights are fascinating and inspiring. Ms. Storch was lucky to have had such a great teacher, and M. Tabuteau was even more lucky to have had such a dedicated, respectful student who writes well.
- Marcel Tabuteau is a name any wind player of my age (60+) has been familiar with for many years. As a teenager, I purchased the "First Chair" album with Tabuteau and other pricipal players of the Philadelphia Symphony soloing. This is a very well written and thorough book on his life that any musician, and certainly any wind player, should read.
- While I'm not through reading this book, I'm amazed at it in many ways. Tabuteau was perhaps the most important orchestral musician of the 20th century in that he taught and found employment for many oboe and other woodwind players. This book covers many details of his life in a readable fashion by the great Laila Storch, a student and worker of his. As a woman, she was not readily accepted by the orchestral community, but she persevered and became an outstanding oboist and musician as a result of his teaching. His methods are not readily understood by many players and I admit to some confusion at times, perhaps because of his choice of words.
Included in the book is a CD of lessons with a Danish student after he had retired. I'm eagerly looking forward to listening to it and, perhaps, learning more.
This book is a must for oboists. It is a great bargain!
- Marcel Tabuteau: How Do You Expect to Play the Oboe If You Can't Peel a Mushroom?
A superb glimpse into Classical music in the 1950's. Interesting autobiographical notes and an intimate look at that icon of American oboe playing, Marcel Tabuteau, by a long time student, colleague and friend.
- This book is a "must have" for any oboist. It is such a well written account of the man who had more influence on the oboe world than probably any other person in history. I am not quite all the way through the book, but I am so enjoying it and I don't want to miss anything. The book itself is of such excellent quality. Only the finest materials were used in making this book. Thank you so much Ms. Storch for your excellent work!

5 comments about Play Alto Sax Today! Beginner's Pack: Book/CD/DVD Pack.
- It's only about 25 mins long but I'm still glad I saw it and I'll be happy to watch it again a few times. It's a very low cost introduction and I think it's worth every penny. The other DVD I ordered and enjoyed was the Ultimate Beginners Series Alto Sax and that was an hour long. It was interesting to see the contrasting points of both videos and I'd definitely recommend them both just to see a couple of different approaches.
- This book is really a step by step guide... the CD and the DVD are very helpful support four stars because could be better with photos about the finger positions... Estos libros son una super ayuda para los que nos gusta avanzar sin maestro...solo le faltan imagenes para la posición de los dedos... recomendado...
- I recevied two (2) of Hal Leonard's self teaching method books 1st trumpet and 2nd saxophone (alto) and they are great! I played Baritone Horn in high school 31 years ago and wanted to get back into music!
Hal Leonard methods has made it easy for me.
I have been at it for just a few weeks playing about an hour everyday.
PS.
I'm ording level two
- Bought this for my son to give to his dad. Dad played the alto sax in high school and 25 years later wanted to pick it up again. This was a great aid to re-introduce him to the basics.
- I bought a saxophone one month ago. I am not a musician, could not read notes, but have a great musical ear and memory. My alto sax is a vintage Conn, naked lady, a sheer beauty of a sax!
This method taught me how to read notes within one week, with daily practice sessions every morning and afternoon. I like the progressive method of going from simple melodies to more and more complex ones. With my headset on, and the CD in the laptop, I can listen to the exercise track first, then stop it and replay, playing along. Repeat as many times as necessary!
Believe it or not, I already joined a New Horizons Band, and as of today, I can play one piece in the band: The Magnificent Seven!!! I think that is quite an accomplishment, after only 2 practice sessions.
It takes practice, of course, but this method helps a bloody beginner like to to get a nice, gentle and sure-handed progression into playing my wonderful sax!

5 comments about Practice Books For The Flute: Omnibus Edition (Books 1-5).
- This book covers almost everything there is when it comes to developing tone, technique and skill. I'm really enjoying it. I think it is a must for beginners, and also really useful for the developing-intermediate flutist that needs a little more to get to the advanced level. my tone is better allready...
- I purchased the omnibus version after buying the single publication on tone. The Omnibus edition comes spiral bound and the pages can be sometimes unruly...slipping out of the slots of spiral binding and giving an untidy look to your sacred sheets of flute wisdom(which is rather annoying to this already disorganized musician).
I refer to the information in the tone section more than any other. The other 'books' in the omnibus were a bit sparse in terms of content. I am glad I spent under 30.00usd on the omnibus instead of buying each book individually.
For those musicians with a sense of humor, the writing style of the author is quite fun to read. His discussions are loaded with flute-specific musings, puns, and other subtle rhetoric. His writing style is ingenious...and a relief from the monotoned, sedate style we usually encouter in method publications.
- 4 stars instead of 5 only because I haven't gone through the whole book yet. The exercizes on tone and breathing are really helpful. It is well written, easy to understand, and realistic as far as goal setting.
I recommend this book to anyone getting back into playing on their own or an experienced musician.
- For anyone that plays the flute, especially those that need guidance for practicing, this is a fantastic resource. When using this collection, you should have a metronome and tuner at your disposal, especially for the volume on intonation.
- The book was in excellent condition, exactly what we needed and $10.00 cheaper than anywhere else.
