  1. A good choice for beginning violinists. The bow is of good quality for a student's violin, though the strings are lacking. The violin itself arrived in a timely manner; however, upon taking a good look at the violin, I noticed that one of the pegs was very loose and made it impossible to tune the D-string. The bridge is also of lackluster quality. The wood used was taken from the outer, younger part of the tree, which means that it is very soft and that the vibration of the strings would wear it away very fast. I have replaced the strings and bridge and gotten the D-peg fixed.

If you are looking for a decent learner's violin, this is a good buy. The case is of good quality (as is the bow). As you progress, you will need to invest in a higher-quality instrument. Advice to buyers of this violin - replace the strings and the bridge.

  2. Despite the previous review, mine arrived in wonderful condition and the tuners had been treated with something to make them turn easily (I guess that's a common problem with violins).

I had originally purchased a Cecilio, but I returned it after my sons violin teacher told me that it couldn't hold a tune and it was poor quality. He recommended a Suzuki. It arrived completely set up and it tune. The quality was much greater than the Cecilio. It has a lovey sound and my son's teacher is very pleased with it.

  3. I bought this violin a few months ago and didn't start the lesson right then.
Recently, my new teacher told me that this violin had 'loud' sound in general and didn't hold the sound that well. On top of that, the bow is fiberglass hair and came in all tangled. Useless! Now I have to go buy a new bow. This violin doesn't come with shoulder rest so I have to buy one and also have to replace the strings(my teacher recommended). The case is nice but that's about it. Now I am expecting to spend over $100. I should have bought some other cheaper student violin and saved money.
I am not happy with this product. I would return it if I could but it's too late now.

  1. I bought this for my daughter, its a great toy and a very beautiful object and it sounds nice but more experienced reveiwers are right that the strings are stiff and the bridge is high and the bow is too soft. I will have to take it somewhere to get it spruced up so that it is easier to use. but all in all I am glad I bought it.

  2. As a more classical violinist, I have always played on an accoustic. Recently, I have been doing more "band" and "rock" performances, so I decided to invest in an electric. This is a great violin, not stellar enough for recording probably but good enough for fun stage shows. The unique body style attracts lots of attention from audience members and the ability to use it as a practice violin while my daughter is sleeping (you can still hear it when "un-plugged", just very soft) has been an added bonus. As for quality of sound, well, I guess I'm just spoiled to the nice robust tone of my accoustic. Maybe with more amplifier experience, I may be able to achieve a better quality?!? This violin does come with a terrific soft case, all the cords needed, a set of headphones and a bow. I will note that the bow is pretty cheap (fiberglass I think) - not the worst bow ever made but you may want to replace it with a better quality one. Also, you will probably need to take it to a music store or violin maker to have the bridge placed properly and buy some additional fine tuners/peg dope (they only send you one on the E string) and the quality of the tuning pegs isn't the best. However, having sounded so negative... I am loving playing it! What a rush when you hear your high A tremolo come out of the amp! An exciting product of musical technology!

  3. This sucks! I was really excited when i got it. It doesnt pick up any of sound. You could only slightly hear it when you plucked the string. Definitely a waste of money.

  4. i bought this violin and an amp recently. i am an experienced violin player, so i fixed the bridge, but when i tried to tune the e string, it snapped. i happened to have an extra for my acoustic, so i put that on and it has worked great! i LOVE the earphone plugin, because it gives me the normal sound, and it is quieter for anyone else in the house. this violin also has pretty good tone without earphones or an amp. i had to replace the shoulder rest, though, because it was pretty cheapy and to flat for me. ( i unscrewed it and now use a normal shoulder rest.) the bow is made of fiberglass, and is very cheapy,so i use my bow from my acoustic. i really like this violin, but if you're not willing to put alot of effort into "customizing" it, then this might not be for you.

  5. It does the job. The sound quality isn't amazing and as somebody said, it's a good idea get a new bridge (the one that came with it was too high I believe). It's nice for casual use as well as people who like to run crazy effects through the violin.

  1. Antique Style Natural Color Full Size 4/4 Violin with Striped Back

This violin was better than I thought in looks it has beautiful white dots on the ends of each peg, on the tailpiece, on the knob on the front of the violin, and on the bow. It had 2 scratches on the violin on the right side, top. The knob on the front wasn't in line correctly, but my instructor, a Dr., said it was playable. The knob, being off centered, made it a trouble for him to move the chin rest over a bit so that the tailpiece could align itself, for when the bridge was in place...so the strings could be tuned, etc. It is a beautiful instrument, the flaming on the back isn't that spectacular, but still pretty and for a beginner it is great! I like the sides of the violin and the pretty white dots that are on the pegs, tailpiece, etc. The bow is nice looking although you can tell it's not as "High quality" as they say, it does have a grip on it, it's just that frog had a white strip that I'm assuming was meant to be as pretty as the white dots...it wasn't it was plain white plastic looking. It looks kind of cheap to me (the bow); the case isn't one of those plastic outside cases (that's what I consider a hard case). I think it's got a hard shell underneath the soft covering on the outside. The zipper caught on one side for a while until it was able to be, how do you say, zipped time and time again (broken in) until it wasn't catching like it was. The inside is pretty, it even has a sleeve, I didn't like the rosin that came with it because it was dark rosin. Dark rosin is not good for hot climates like mine, but the shoulder straps were good! I like how I can pack it around on my back instead of just on my shoulder, that saves using my hand for other things and not worrying about it falling off as I move around. I also advise buying a Care Kit for beginners as well because it comes with peg drops, polish, duster, soft cloth, dark rosin (makes a face), etc. for your violin care. Just remember if you are in colder climates use dark rosin; in warmer climates use light rosin. All in all it was a great buy! No matter how much I complain about it I fell in love with it instantly when I held it in my hands.

  1. I have no real complaints it came in a nice amount of time and it made a nice present.

  2. I have been using the violin now for two days (about 2 hours total during that span). I ordered it on Wednesday, and it was at the doorstep the following Tuesday. Pretty good shipping time, I can't complain.

So just like everyone says, there is some assembly required (and Austin Bazaar is up-front with this information). Basically, when you receive the violin, you will get five things: the violin itself, the bridge for the violin, the bow, a rosin piece, and a case. The assembly of the bridge is fairly straight-forward, but it would be nice if Austin Bazaar would mention somewhere how to do it (a few pictures and some instructions would be enough). To make it simple for anyone who buys this violin, do the following to assemble the bridge:

    1. Set the violin on the floor, strings facing up.

    2. Find the f-shaped holes on the main body of the violin. Each hole should have two notches in them (one on the left, one on the right).

    3. Look at the bridge (the little wood piece with the four holes on it). There should be two little feet (the bottom), and a curved edge (the top). On the top (curved part), if you look at it from the front, you should see that one side of the curve is higher up than the other. That side goes on the side of the violin with the lower/thicker strings. The low side of the curve goes on the side with the higher/thinner strings.

    4. Now you know how the bridge lines up. Slide the bridge under the strings (loosen them if it is too hard to slide it under; don't force it too much). The feet of the bridge touch the violin body, the curve touches the strings (don't put the strings through the holes in the bridge, they go right on top of the bridge, and rest along the curve).

    5. Once the bridge is in place, tighten the strings enough to hold the bridge in place without your help. As you tighten the strings, make sure that the feet of the bridge stay flat against the body of the violin. If they start to tilt up, lightly slide them back to a flat placement.

    6. Now, just tune the violin. The strings tune to (in order of lowest/thickest to highest/thinnest) G, D, A, and E (perfect 5ths between each string). Don't tune it too quickly, or the string may snap. You may want to tune the strings 3/4s of the way and then leave it for a few minutes, and then come back and slowly finish the tuning (if you've ever tuned a guitar, this is very similar). Once you get the strings properly tuned, they WILL un-tune themselves for a bit. This is day two, and I've tuned the violin probably 15 times so far. At first, it wouldn't tune at all, but it started to keep after a few tunes. Also, as Austin Bazaar says, push the pegs inward as you tune (not too hard though, as it can warp the wood slightly, and de-tune your other strings), and this should help. If that doesn't work, put some rosin on the pegs. As a last resort, us peg drops (which SHOULD have been included, but oh well).

    7. Tighten your bow string fairly tight using the screw at the bottom of the bow (don't go crazy, just tight enough that the bow-string will barely touch the bow when you put pressure on it). Take your rosin out, and use some sandpaper to grit it up a bit. Once you have done that, slowly rub it up and down the length of the bow, stopping at each end and using the bow string to grit the rosin up a bit more (make a polishing sort of motion on the rosin). The first time you do this can take some work (10-15 minutes).

    8. You should be all set to start playing! From here, you need to learn how to play, and that is more in-depth that I care to go on my Amazon.com violin review. :)

So in summary, if you have always wanted to play the violin, but aren't sure how much time you will dedicate towards it, this is a pretty good way to try it out. If I'm still playing in 2-3 years, I'll probably look at something a bit more refined, but until that time, this violin looks as if it will do a great job (perhaps I will even pass it on to my first child when I have one, as a starter instrument)!

  3. First off, there were a few inperfections that needed some attention. The spacing of the strings on the nut needed proper spacings. Also installation instructions of the bridge setup with proper string spacing was not included in the shipment. But that was O.K., because a little research online helped solve those problems. If the tuning pegs slip which usually occurs with peg tuning put some sandpaper and rosin to the shafts and that should reduce any slippage. This violin does have fine tuners which is a must for accurate tuning. If you are interested in beginner playing which does require the initial phases of learning the violin inside and out, then consider the few imperfections which needed attention as part of the learning process... For the price, I would buy another one!

  4. I will be completely honest, I am an alternative model, so the use of this violin was simply for prop purposes, however after my photos shoot, I was going to hand this violin over to a friend who was interested in becoming a player...WELL....I'm no violin musician, but I can tell a piece of crap when I see it! Like I said, I only used it for photos...but tuning wise...when I go to tighten the knobs, the little bastards wont stay in place and in general its just poorly made...

  5. I bought this Violin a few days ago and already received it. The bridge was easy to install, and tuning is a process. I am just learning and even with the tuning half done it sounds wonderful already. I only had a few pet peeves. Unlike the picture in a similar product page from this seller, my case did not come with the cloth. Also, the delivery people (not sure if it was ups??) beat the heck out of the box. The rosin came in pieces and the strings were everywhere including one having a kink due to rough handling. The violin itself is very pretty and sounds better then i ever thought. Now all i need is a cloth and rosin and i'm good to go. Tuning is a bit difficult though so i'm spending an extra $3-$5 to have a music store tune it for me. I bought the Violin for dummies book and it's helping me a lot. i was even able to play several notes...even though i don't know how to read music.
