  1. The "Essential Elements : A Comprehensive Band Method - Book 2" is a great book for a young person who is learning an instrument for the first time. There is a fingering chart in the back of the book to make looking up fingerings quick and easy. The book starts off very basic with the parts of the instrument. The easiest notes to play and finger are presented first with exercises to practice them.

Hal Leonard also offered other books that correlate (they even tell you what pages they go along with) with some of the skills in this book. They are:
    Essential Elements Movie Favorites
    Essential Elements Broadway Favorites
    Essential Elements Patriotic Favorites

    Practice makes PERMANENT, not PERFECT.

  1. "I would give this book a 10 if I could! I dislike this series, but OH BABY this one was good! It has no bad points. It really shows you the beauty of the tuba and how the other "great" instruments aren't. DONT JUDGE A TUBA BY ITS COVER. I am a tuba player that has made national compititions! BUY IT NOW AND PASS IT ON TO YOUR FRIENDS AND YOUR BABY LATER IN YOUR LIFE!"

  2. karen's class is learning how to play musical instruments and they decide to surprise ms colman by playing here comes the bride at their concert

  3. if you're a kid in elementary school who is interested in music and learning instruments for the school band, you are likely to really enjoy this

  1. On his way to his tuba lesson, a young boy is swept up by the magic of a woods full of singing animals. Is it real, or is it a dream? Share this beautifully illustrated picture book with young children and creative adult friends and see what they think. This charmer will pull you back into the wonders of being a child. Beautifully illustrated. Surely a classic. Great gift book too.

  2. This is a picture book the highest quality. It is a bit like Little Red Riding Hood, except instead of a little girl, there is a little boy. Instead of a hood and a basket, there is a Tuba. Instead of grandma, there is a Tuba instructor. Instead of the wolf, there are a forest full of animals, all enamored by the tuba. And there is no bloody ending.

Ok. It is nothing like Little Red Riding Hood. But it is a lot of fun. I recommend it highly.

  3. Music lessons will be seen in a new light after reading Tuba Lessons by T.C. Bartlett, illustrated by Monique Felix.

The imaginative record of a boy's trip to his music teacher's house is a bouncy, fun book to which any child who has ever taken a music lesson can quickly relate. The text is sprightly, and the illustrations vibrant.

  1. First off, this book is for TUBA.

The "Essential Elements 2000: A Comprehensive Band Method" is a great book for a young person who is learning an instrument for the first time. There is a fingering chart in the back of the book to make looking up fingerings quick and easy. The book starts off very basic with the parts of the instrument. The easiest notes to play and finger are presented first with exercises to practice them. This book comes with a play-along CD. This CD includes all solo exercises.

Hal Leonard also offers (though not through Amazon) band sets for band directors. They are simple arrangements of music that correlate with the book. They are great for the first concert.

There is an older version of this book called "Essential Elements: A Comprehensive Band Method". The book is purple and has many of the same features as this one, but the CDs have to purchased separately.

  2. This is a practical tool for working with a tuba. I found it to be very helpful.

  1. I purchased this expecting a well organized overview and introduction about most important things to know about the tuba, I thought it would be as good as is the Farkas book for French horn, but it is far from that. Of course it contains a lot of informations, but I did not find many of the answers for the questions I have as a beginner. It's structure lets a lot to wish for too...

  2. This short book is just as described and its authorship is about as authoratative as they come. Its a bit dated, in that all sorts of innovations have been made in tuba and euphonium design since its writing. I'm only a serious hobbiest, not a professional tubaist, (I am a rabbi by profession,) so the book is just interesting reading for me. Nice and very practical technical advice; reading helped me remember ways to keep a lid on sloppy playing habits I've developed over the years playing in non-demanding community bands and the like. For a one volume, inexpensive book, it's a great value.

  3. If you're a tuba player, you could probably get some use out of this book. Euphonium players would not. Regardless of the idea that the euphonium is a "little tuba", it isn't. There are fundamental differences in approach to each instrument that Harvey Phillips overlooks as he takes to the same school of thought. Euphonium players would be better off getting the Lehman version.

5 comments about Skeletons Don't Play Tubas (The Adventures of the Bailey School Kids, #11).
  1. I like Skeletons Don't Play Tubas because whenever Liza gets really scared her nose bleeds. The kids think that Mr.Belgrave teaches a skeleton how to play the tuba. My favorite character is Eddie because he always gets in trouble.I recommend this book for grades 1, 2, and 3 because it is a fun book to read and it is very funny.

  2. Strange adults and odd happenings are becoming commonplace in and around Bailey Elementary. But could the new band teacher, Mr. Belgrave, REALLY be teaching his skeleton to play the tuba??

The Bailey Kids are back in this 11th installment of their adventures. After first glimpsing a very tall, extremely skinny bald man carrying a long box through the cemetery, the Bailey kids are a bit surprised to find out that he's their new band teacher! More surprised to learn that he's got a skeleton named Claude in his classroom! Is this isn't creepy enough, the low, howling sound of the tuba is heard now and then, but no one-including Mr. Belgrave-knows how to play it! Could it be his skeleton?? Other weird occurances happen as well, Liza is almost certain she saw Claude the skeleton tap his foot in time to the music! Is she seeing things, or is the skeleton ALIVE?

This series goes back and forth between the just plain fun to the downright creepy. While "Leprachauns Don't Play Basketball" was a fun holidayish romp, "Skeletons Don't..." was outright spooky. While it isn't necessary to begin with book #1 and work your way through all of the books, you may find that it's an addictive, fun series and an easy read.

  3. Skeletons Don't Play Tubas Debbie Daddy and Marcia Jones

Wouldn't it be scary to have a skeleton sitting behind you that you thought was alive? You will find out that there are a lot of scary items that will make you scream.

This book is about four kids that try and save their school from an evil skeleton, At least they think it's evil, read this book and find out what happens.

I really like this book because of the action and the musical sounds. My favorite character is Liza. She comes up with a lot of great ideas that Eddie doesn't like.

I think the author wrote this book to teach kids that caring about their school is the right thing to do especialy when there is a toy skeleton involved.

  4. I loved it,it's funny and scary and I like the drawing of the cover!!! My favorite character is Melody because she is smart and comes up with a lot of great ideas!!!!.I LOVE IT!!!!
My other favorites are "Hercules Does'nt Pull Teeth" and "Vampires Don't Wear Polka Dots"!!!

  5. When the four kids meet their band class teacher. They think he is an evil skeleton. The kids must save the school before the evil skeleton attacks. You Know what Mr. Belgrave's skeleton is?. It's name is Claude. They are also surprised to see their band teacher carrying a big box over the cemetery. Liza got scared because Claude almost tapped her foot. Is this for real?

While Book 10[Witches Don't Do Backflips] was their new gym coach. Liza, Melody, Howie and Eddie were glad. But one thinks the new coach is a witch because she says weird languages and like a spell. I Also like Zombies Don't Play Soccer because the new coach is Coach Graves. Suddenly, An old lady appears and she says that if she[Coach Graves] will not go she will turn her into a zombie. But Coach Graves disagreed so she turned her a zombie. Now that the coach is a zombie she cannot help the Team of the four kids. But when the game started something surprising really happened. But you must find out.

  1. When I was a little girl in the 1940's I loved my book and "78" recording of Tubby the Tuba. I honestly think I learned the sounds of the instruments of the orchestra at an early age because of this delightful recording. I was happy to learn that a book and recording are now available, and so ordered it for my three-year-old granddaughter. She loves the CD and the book and wants to hear them every time she visits. No doubt she, too, will learn the sounds of the violins, french horn, and tuba (of course) from this wonderful recording and sweet story!

  2. I bought "Tubby the Tuba" for my 3-year-old son last month, and it has been an unexpected smash hit. He has asked to hear it several times a day every day since we got it. (He is also a fan of "Carnival of Animals" and "Peter and the Wolf," but "Tubby" has elicited particular fervor.) He has memorized his favorite passages, learned to recognize the instruments by sound and sight, and is now asking to see the orchestra. An unexpected surprise!

  3. My sons (ages 4 and 6) both love this book and the accompanying CD. Either the book or the CD would be excellent products on their own. Together, however, they are magic!

  4. This book will be a great introduction to the orchestra for my young students. I like the characters and the storyline. The accompanying CD is great for listening exercises in my music classes. Thanks!

  5. This is a great book to introduce your kids to the instruments in the orchestra and what they sound like (CD included). The catchy Tuba melody and the Frog's "Bug-Gup" is adorable. My 3 year old can't get enough. He asks for the "Oompah Oompah" Book. Nice illustrations and great story.
