5 comments about Yamaha YPT200AD 61 key Keyboard with Adapter.
- hmm. It doesnt sound much like a Grande Piano two me. More of like a strange drumset sometimes or a synthy. Or people claping at me when I didnt even play anything. I push le button hard. WILD HOOOOOGGS
- Although this keyboard is small, and pretty compact, it has a great price and is ideal for a person who loves uncomplicated music without a "million and one" sounds which up the price and don't add much to the enjoyment of the person playing.
- For what it is, this keyboard is great. However, "what it is" allows it to have significant drawbacks:
1: the speakers are horrible. With external speakers or headphones, it sounds great (need an adapter, as the keyboard has a quarter-inch jack). If playing one key at a time, the speakers may be acceptable, but they are incapable of combining the sounds of several keys.
2: it is not touch-sensitive. This means that, no matter how hard or soft you press the keys, a sound of the same volume will be played.
3: It is set to LOUD by default. Every time I turned the keyboard on, I lowered the volume to one third. The keyboard uses button presses, rather than a dial, to control volume. This is simply annoying and should have been corrected.
4: It is not full-size. It has 61 keys; a piano has 88. This may or may not be a limitation, depending on your skill level and song preference.
5: Headphone jack is on the back of the keyboard. It should be on the front, which is more convenient and comfortable.
6: Flimsy bookstand. This is a problem with some better Yamaha models as well.
On the exceptionally good side:
1: the default piano sound, with good headphones (Sennheiser EH 350), is spectacular.
2: very light and easy to carry. It can also run on batteries, in case you want to take it camping or something.
3: Very cheap, which is handy if you plan to take it camping. It is also durable if you are careful with it.
On some occasions, I would prefer to use this keyboard rather than my new Yamaha DGX 505, simply because the notes sound so beautiful.
If your child wants to play the piano, either this or a YPT 300 is perfect. The Piano Handbook by Carl Humphries is a very helpful as well.
- My Yamaha portable keyboard only came with 60 keys, not 61. The worst part about it is the missing key is right in the middle of the keyboard, making it virtually useless. I have contacted the seller (ANTOnline), but since they cannot be reached by phone it has been through email. Their online customer service department emails me back within 2 business days, but they will not replace it with a 61-Key piano. Instead, they suggest that I send it to Yamaha.
Sending it to Yamaha is going to cost me an additional $27 for shipping--and repair or replacement could take up to 6 weeks--so I am highly dissatisfied. Ordering products online should be as or more convenient than going to an actual store. This experience has proven to me that this is not the case.
- I'm pleasantly surprised by the quality and variety of voices in this modestly priced keyboard. It's more than met my expectations, in terms of performance for making demo songs. There's no confusing this product with a performance level instrument, but then again, why would you expect that at such a low price?

5 comments about First Act Discovery FP830 Junior Grand Piano.
- When we initially pulled this out the box, I was excited becaue it was crafted so well! Real wood and excellent craftsmanship - HOWEVER - the sound absolutely sucks! It sounds like Elmo's toy piano, or even worse. I thought it was just the fact that the piano was sitting flat on the floor (I hadn't installed the legs yet), and the sound was just off. By the time I got everything assembled, the disappointment settled in even deeper. This piano was not worth the price I paid for it - by any stretch of the imagination. I realize this is a TOY and not an instrument; but again, for the money, you'd expect a better sounding product. An added note: my daughter LOVES banging on it!
- My grandson is 26 months old and is already singing and loves to listen to music. I bought him this to play with in hopes he will play for real later on. It is a lovely little piano and you will not be disappointed!
- For the price ($80) I expected much better sound. Should spend a little more and get a Shoenhut or for $10 you could get a toy piano that sounds better than this one. Very tinny sound, completely out of tune (why do they bother even assigning a note to the keys?), and lid is attached with screws AND glue so the only way to get to the metal rods to attempt to tune it, even after the screws are removed, will be to crack the wood casing getting past the glue.
- I recently bought one of these for our 18-month-old son. The piano arrived in fine shape. The piano and bench are sturdy and well made when you put them together properly. The sound is just like I remember a toy piano should sound. Notes are not perfectly in tune like a fine instrument, but tuned within reason to the notes of the scale, including sharps and flats. Most importantly, our little boy just loves playing this piano. Hopefully it will inspire him to continue and so it is as great an introdroduction to music as any other toy, including the electronic toys, we have purchased for him. I also liked that he wasn't able to pull off the keys try as he may. They just kind of become locked when he trys to do that and can be put back in place by minor adjstment.
- Our son received this as a gift from his Grandma for his first birthday. She knew he would love it because he enjoys "playing" the real piano, at her house.
Well, he does love it. He love, love, loves it. No other thing we have ever purchased for him has captured his attention for such a long period of time. We've only had it for a couple of weeks, so he might get tired of it at some point. We'll see. But for now, it's his favorite thing. He loves to stand and bang on the keys, then pauses to look around to make sure everyone is listening to his performance. He'll even stop and clap for himself. He also sits on the bench and plays. The dimensions are great for either standing or sitting.
The version we have has a slightly different stool, with the legs angle out a bit, which makes it very very sturdy.
The piano itself is less sturdy and we only let him play with it when we're in the room because he has tried to climb on it and tip it over.
So it's a wonderful toy and I can see that this could be a great way to introduce your child to playing an instrument.
However, the sound. It's pretty tinny and chimey. It isn't unpleasant, even with all the banging. It just isn't super piano like. I tried to pick out country gardens and the notes are quite off key. I read in another person's review that they were able to tune it a bit, so we'll have to try that.
So as an actual instrument? I'd give this one star. As an entertaining musical toy, five stars. I'd give it an extra half star just for the photo ops you'll have, but half stars aren't possible. Sooo: overall, three stars.
