1 comments about Podemski's Standard Snare Drum Method.
- This is the finest snare drum method book I have ever used. The notes are inverted to begin teaching the beginer how to read upside down, as fellow drummers will know you will do alot of this type reading when you play the drumset. I only had to buy a new copy because I wore my 20 year copy out. I highly recomend this for the intermediate to advanced drummer.

1 comments about World Music Drumming: A Cross-Cultural Curriculum.
- I am a general music teacher and have been using this as a curriculum with my 6th and 7th graders. They love the drumming and respond well to the entire book. There are so many things to think about as a teacher and this book helped alleviate all the stresses of being a music teacher. I had more time to plan engaging lessons with my students and I did not have to think about how or when I would assess. It was all well laid out in the book. Plus the author was the head of MENC. THis is by far one of the best music education books I have purchased. It has been used in my school for a while and I am happy to be part of the program.

1 comments about The Funky Beat (Manhattan Music Publications).
- I use this book extensively with my private students and consider it one of the best drumset instruction books ever written. The book explains the seminal James Brown funk grooves and how to build upon them, the Tower Of Power grooves that Garibaldi made famous with that band, and has eight funk-fusion music tracks with and without drums, charts of those songs and developmental analysis of the different grooves used in those songs. The drum solo alone on the CD is worth the price of admission. There is also a companion video called "Tower of Groove" that shows Garibaldi and a very tight band playing these songs.

3 comments about 66 Drum Solos for the Modern Drummer: Rock * Funk * Blues * Fusion * Jazz.
- It's my first review on a book and I decided to post it as an obligation to the writer, for the excellent work he has done.
(I play drums for about 8 months with previous long experience on keyboard (self taught) so I write the review from this point of view). Each one of the 66 solos in this book is 12 bars long, for a duration of about 30 seconds, 1 solo per page. The solos begin from solo 1 very easy, but soon they become of medium difficulty and some are of high difficulty, especially if played at the same speed as on the included cd. The solos are just awesome, even the simple ones. The score on each page is in a very readable form, even from 3 feet away (I have placed it just in front of the drums in a music stand and I read it while I practice). The included cd demonstrates each solo in a very clear awesome sound. I use the cd to choose my next favorite solo to practice and then I use the score on the book to learn the solo. It's true, the solos are "excellent exercises" for technique, independence and for improvement of your improvisational skills. Also, every new solo I learn from the score It improves my reading ability and after the 4th or 5th solo, reading the next one becomes piece of cake! It includes: 8 Pop Rock solos, 6 warm-up solos, 6 Funk Rock (16nth note based), 6 Funk Rock (8th note based), 2 6/8 solos, 2 7/8 solos, 6 Rock Fusion, 4 Rock Fusion (accented upbeats), 2 Rock Fusion (quarter note based), 4 Hard Rock, 5 Jazz, 3 Shuffle and 12 Jazz fusion. In short, this is the book that will make you a better drummer FAST, and you can also use it when you want to practice without getting bored!
- I love this book! It is great for practicing any thing you want in easy to read format. The solos are also fun to play and change every page.
- I have been drumming for a few years now and consider myself a desent drummer. My major problem was that I had no discipline, I would play just improvised and not really keep count of measures or anything. I would play and whenever I felt I would throw in a drum fill. Some drum fills would go a little over. With this book It made me really sit down and play with structure. The concept of the book is simple, but it is NOT drum solos. Drum solos is like most believe is just showing off speed and technique. While this book is just measures of drum beats followed by drum fills. It is more or less like for songs. It would have an intro then the beat then the fill then beat and so on. What I really love about the book is that it gradually gets harder. So you just start with one and work your way up to 66. Trust me you cant go wrong with this book.

5 comments about Buddy Rich's Modern Interpretation of Snare Drum Rudiments.
- I used this book to develop a solid technique in conga drums.
- It is a well known fact that Buddy never learned to read music and played everything "by ear." This book is a wonderful tribute in a ironic sort of way, but if one takes anything away from this book, it should be that a successful career in drumming (namely, music) must include learning the mechanics/mathematics of musical notation, the language of drumming (rudiments) and the intrepretation thereof. And, admittedly, I don't know for certain, but my guess is that Buddy probably couldn't have told you the difference between a paradiddle and a ratamacue.
- This isn't a bad book, but then again, it doesn't have much to delineate itself from other rudiment books, or justify the price tag. It does contain a nice variety of rudiments and variations on rudiments, but it lacks a spiral binding (i.e. - you can't easily put the book up on a music stand), which makes it less than ideal when it comes time to actually try to use the book.
It's copyright 1942, and the pictures of Buddy on the inside seem to be of that era. Otherwise, it has absolutely nothing to do with Buddy Rich; the book appears to have been written by Henry Adler.
- Lets be clear on this, Buddy did not write a single lession in this book, not to take anyting away from his gift but music notation was not his thing, He signed up for the cash and was given a lump sum for his name and a few pictures...Having said that, the book is fine for learning how to progress with your rudiments.
- Whoever wrote the first review has no idea what they are talking about because this book has everything to do with Buddy Rich. It was written by his teacher (Henry Adler) because Buddy could not read music. This book includes rudiments which you do first in singles then bouce them out. Trust me this that is how this book is taught and used correctly. I know that because my private instructor is the man who revised the book and also took lessons with Henry Adler. This book is useful to anyone that plays drums including highly talented and experienced players. This book if used regularly and correctly will get your hands into the best shape possible, for matched and traditional players. I would highly reccomend this book to any one looking to get their hands in shape and wanting a strong base for their drumming.

1 comments about Hard Rock: Drum Play-Along Volume 3 (Hal Leonard Drum Play-Along).
- This is a great series of drum transcriptions and this is probably my favorite entry in it. The companion CD has each song performed two times, once with the full ensemble, and the other with the ensemble minus the drums for you to play along with. This book has a nice mix of difficulties and styles within the genre.

4 comments about Double Bass Drumming.
- Joe does one of the greatest jobs of using double bass drum playing. He doesn't over do it in this book. The book gets you using your feet in all areas of drumming. Fills, Patterns and Rhythms. It helps you develop you brain to use you feet as equal. You will not just be some double bass trash metal drummer after this book. You learn how to use you feet equal with your hands in fills and other techniques around the set.
- I have been playing drums since 1979 but only in the last year have I gone double bass. Some say you can't teach an old dog new tricks or it is really difficult to re-wire your brain to use the 'other' foot, but the way this book is written is perfect. It starts with simple activities that you need to master in order to move on. I highly recommend it.
For my fellow lefty drummers, he doesn't use L and R but he uses B.D.1 and B.D.2 which is refreshing. Thank you Joe!
- This book will definitely help you build up your chops with your feet, in addition to potentially helping you uncover some problems with hand/feet independence. This book is worth it in terms of both money and time invested.
- When I first got the book I felt a bit disapointed since it lacked a lot of text, I felt "man, I wish he'd talk about things like how to maintain good balance, good posture, etc."... but overtime, through the exercises and going for really slow up, I've realized that as I practice the exrecises in front of a mirror, I learn how to balance myslef properly through trial and error
All I can say is, after just 9 of the 16-note exercises, I'm double peddling away at songs I nevedr thought possible before! Just as long as you really take your time to learn each exercise properly... you will gain a lot!

5 comments about Drumming at the Edge of Magic: A Journey into the Spirit of Percussion.
- Drumming At The Edge of Magic is a truly inspirational book for all people interested in drumming and rhythms. It details Harts cathartic exploration and eases the modern drummer into other-worldly potentials.
- I'd lost interest in playing for about 5 years before I read this book, but Mickey Hart's book brought me back to the reasons I started hitting the bottom of tin cans woth a wooden spoon! This book follows, to a degree, the history of drums, and studies the emotional, spiritual and physical effects of drums, old ancient, and new on people. I highly recommend this book to anyone who likes to play for any or no reason, and to andone who can't explain why the music makes them dance.
- At a glance, Drumming at the Edge of Magic may seem like an autobiogrphical journey by the Grateful Dead's Mickey Hart. While the book is autobiographical, it goes far beyond that to discover the real meaning of drumming and music in general.
The meaning of drumming (or life?) comes in many forms, and many disguises. As Hart begins to unluck the secrets to why humans desire to express themselves in music, one can't help but say, "YES!". Hart, and to a certain extent, Jay Stevens, put into words what drummers and other musicians have felt all along but have never known how to express. The journey ends up being a look inward; not just for Hart but for the reader as well. After reading this, I had my wife and father read it. I explained, "This is how I feel about drumming." The companion CD and sequel book, "Planet Drum," are nice additions but the book stands by its self as an outstanding source for understanding music at its most basic form. This book will move you.
- I am not a Deadhead, nor am I a drummer, but I have really admired this book, and Mickey Hart big time. He really went off the deep end of his knowledge of percussion, both conventional, and exotic. I had not had this book with me since 1995, so my mind is a bit foggy, but if I remember right, the book is also a trip down Memory Lane, speaking of the hippie days of the Haight-Ashbury, The Grateful Dead and the whole scene in general. One of my favorites was of a drum he got in Tibet made from human skulls. He was wondering why he felt like he was being cursed, and he was told that he was using the drums wrong and it was used to wake the dead. He decided to return the drums and get a similar one not made of skulls. Drumming at the Edge of Magic was also a tie-in to what was then Mickey Hart's latest CD called At the Edge. This book really makes me wished I was there with the hippies and the Deadheads, even if I, myself don't listen to the Dead. It's too bad the Dead isn't around anymore thanks to Jerry Garcia's untimely death. Whether you're a Deadhead or not, whether you're a percussionist or not, this is truly an enthusiastic and well-written book on the subject of percussion.
- it was recieved in a very timely manner - no complaints at all and in fact I would gladly do business with this vendor again!
