  1. I have said this before in other reviews and I will say it again, everything Jim Payne puts out is just phenominal. His approach to teaching from simple to complex, plus the volume of material and the progressions and styles, makes this book a huge plus for any drummer to own.

Even if you are not into funk drumming, you could start out in this book as a rank beginner with little drumset training and progress faster than you ever thought possible. The rhythms make sense, and the new edition has a CD to play along with to help you out.

I do not know Jim personally, but I won 3 of his books now, and I would not hesitate to recommend them to any drummer out there.

  2. You can get a better review of this by clicking on the "spiral bound" link above.

But let me suffice to say that everything Jim produces is first class, and I won three of his books. His Tito Puente book is a masterpiece!

3 comments about Mel Bay's Fun With Bongos Book/CD Set.
  1. An great simple book for those people aspiring to become a "bongocero". It provides information on tuning, musical drum notation, basic bongo techniques and rhythms. It should keep you busy until you are ready to move onto the next intermediate book of the bongo series, "The Bongo Book" by Trevor Salloum.

  2. It's a great book for real beginners, where you ca learn to read music and very easy exercises to star with. But, you will need another book to be able to play rithms. The other books starts where this one finishes.

  3. Book & CD set was perfect for the set of Bongo Drums I ordered for my grandaughter< Just in time for Christmas, quick service, protective packaging, excellent condition.

3 comments about 14 Modern Contest Solos for Snare Drum.
  1. This book is great! It contains great peices of music for the snare drummer. It is made to be rudimentaly sound. Meaning the solo's are full of many rudiments. This makes it full of great playback, and full of great learning. The solo's range from diffucult to very diffucult. It is not for the the faint at heart drummer. Hodge Podge(the easiest solo) cannot be played unless you have the ability to play rolls(5/7/9/10/11/13),flams,ruffs,and sixteenth notes with accompyning eight notes. The hardest title is My Friend Norman and Gingersnap. The 6/8 excercies are very diffucult in their own right. This is great solo book for any above average to advanced snare drummer!

  2. John Pratt's book is a staple that all serious percussionists should play at some point. Pratt utilizes many rudiments in every solo and incorporates a lot of "over the barline" techniques. Many of my own drum students have performed these solos for solo and ensemble festivals and recitals. This book is a great tool for drummers in the medium to advanced stages. I highly recommend!

  3. Rudimental drum solos are very fun at first, especially when you're doing great sight reading them. But it can get very boring.

This is NOT the case with this book!! These solos have many of the rudiments being played over the barline and starting on other weird rhythmic positions. I just got this book last week, and even though I read through it the first day, I am now going back and focusing on 2 solos at a time. (i want to be able to play these really well!)

Great book... very fun... and despite constant recommendations to get Pratt's 14 Modern Contest Solos, I feel I should've had it in my library months ago :)

3 comments about Afro-Cuban Rhythms for Drumset.
  1. You gotta get the cuban beat

  2. If you are looking to spruce up your playing, this is the book for you. It uses a step by step process to ease you into the most dificult rhythms. It also comes with a cd that gives examples of all the beats in this book which I found very helpful. You can apply the beats learned in this book to any type of music for a much more interesting sound. I would say this book is for moderate to advanced drummers. Get this book, It's worth it.

  3. After 20+ years of playing the drum set I can hear and feel most standard rock and jazz rhythms fairly easily. But the rhythms in this book are so different that I find myself challenged in each exercise---even the simplest ones! This book will really help the drummer who is comfortable with current and past rock and jazz styles, because it is a huge stretch from the 4/4 and 3/4 that most of us spend virtually all of our time playing. More than anything, this book will help your overall sense of time, because its contents are so different from the American rock-pop-jazz genre, that your brain will have to work overtime to master them. It's helpful if you have some Latin traps in your kit, but not necessary to reap the full benefit. Couple this book with Gary Chester's New Breed, and you'll step into a new phase of musical creativity in your drumming career. The included CD is really essential to understanding the groove of these exercises.

  1. Steven Schick's book is wonderfully written and extremely informative. His in depth discussion of several solo percussion masterpieces is an essential read for any aspiring, accomplished percussionist. Schick is undeniably at the forefront of this all to often overlooked idiom, and he shares his knowledge, experience and most importantly his struggles in this book. It is accompanied with a CD featuring Schick performing works such as Wourinen's Janissary Music, Lang's Anvil Chorus, Ferneyhough's Bone Alphabet, Xenakis' Rebonds and more.
If you are a percussionist who plans on persuing a career in music I cannot stress enough how important Schick has been to our artform, and to read about it through his perspective is a privelage that should not be passed up. I would also highly recommend this book to any musician outside of percussion as an interesting read.

1 comments about Alfred's Beginning Drumset Method (Book & DVD).
  1. Most of the begining drumset books available focus on either rock or jazz styles. This book begins a student in both rock and jazz in a simple and comprehendible way. I suggest the student work in both sections at once.

3 comments about Haskell W. Harr Drum Method - Book Two: For Band and Orchestra.
  1. This is the same book that I learned from as a child and it is still my favorite book to use as a teacher for the rudiments and all the foundational drumming stuff. It is excellent.

That being said, I use the Realistic Rock book by Carmine Appice for teaching the drum set in conjunction with this rudimental base because most drummers want to do more than play the snare drum. Using both books, they get the best of both worlds.

  2. GREAT!

  3. Harr does a nice job following up book one with this one. With book one having 13 rudiments book two covers the next 13 with challenging solos and exercises. You play from these two books and you have a great start. I feel rudimentally these two books are tops. Great books to teach out of
