  1. I LOVE this guitar! LOVE IT!

The strings are terrible and need to be replaced, but otherwise this thing is so much fun to play. Every time I look to play, I'm picking up this one...

  2. I had this a few weeks now. I'm a fan of Mr. Westerberg so I bought it for that reason only. As a player it's ok I play many high end guitars so with that being said, it's a bang for your buck so to speak. Fat neck, decent sound high action but again for the $$$$$ fun guitar.

    Mikey

  3. My wife bought me this guitar for our third wedding anniversary. I had been lusting after it ever since it was announced that Paul had signed with First Act to release his own signature model. That said, you really would be hard pressed to find a better guitar for the price. It is solidly made, has incredible sustain, and the tone is amazing. This guitar has made me re-evaluate my love of semi-hollow body electrics. I also own a 4003 Rickenbacker. I can make the PW580 sound almost just like it with one turn of the tone knob. The neck is pretty smooth for unvarnished rosewood and maple. I love the body design, and the plaid pickguard is classic Westerberg, a throwback to the plaid outfits he used to wear in the Replacements. I can't put this guitar down. I have owned over ten electric guitars in the 15 years that I have been playing music. I have to say that this has immediately become one of my favorites. Now if only that much anticipated Replacements box set would hurry up and come out ASAP!

  4. Nice guitar for the money. It has a nice bright clean sound. Also, very lite in weight so it's a joy on stage or playing at home. Only problem is the fretboard is dry. I recommend treating the fret board w/a polish or lemon oil to smooth up before you play it for the first time.

  5. Been a long time 'Mats fan, so when I saw this Paul guitar, had to have it. Very decent guitar. My only minor complaint is that neck just doesn't feel "right". Went ahead and removed the low E (6th) string and tuned to Keith Richards's stylee. Sounds good thru my 25w Ibanez amp, get some nice dirty tones.

  1. From unpacking to soaking my fingers after 4 hours of breaking this baby in, it ROCKS. I've had Epi's through the years and this one beats the older Les and SG models I've played. Pickups scream, sweet neck with low action. If you use a death or grunge box along with it I suggest cranking the amps to 12.

Was going to purchase from Musicians Friend but gave the sponsored link from Sweetwater music store a shot. The guys are great to deal with, and all former musicians. I'll be doing more biz with them, awesome customer service.

  2. "T" wasnt lying about the pickups, the do indeed scream. The more I play it, the more i like it. Plain and simple, it looks, feels and sounds great. Previous to this guitar i have been playing my dad's Gibson Les Paul Recording... Tonally I am not noticing much difference. Honestly I think if i switched to higher gauge strings like that which are on my dads LP, my guitar would sound virtually the same. I'm not the sharpest tack in the box when it comes to the nitty gritty details of guitars/pickups/overall tone, but i wasnt expecting my Epi to sound so close to an actual Gibson LP.

If it helps paint the picture, I play a lot of Tool... and the solo from Rossetta Stoned sounds perfect on this guitar. It's no Silverburst, but you sure as hell can ballpark it.

The only downfall i have found about this guitar is that it does have somewhat limited access to the extreme upper frets. I cant really play too far past the 20th fret. But thats it, i am otherwise 100% satisfied.

  1. THis is an awesome guitar. Seriously, I agree with the other reviews even though i have not yet bought it. Great for beginers like me who have no guitar or experience.

  2. My title says it all, you can't beat the price for everything you get! (I paid $169.00, btw) I like the guitar and amp, and while it may not be near the best guitar and amp you can get, it does the job. Perfect for beginners and those who are on a tight budget. I'm very happy with the package. I have been watching the DVD and have been playing away! Again, for everything you get, you just can't beat it! I couldn't find a better deal anywhere!

  3. The package arrived 10 days earlier than the estimated day. It came right on time at my daughter's 13 yrs old birthday. Thanks for Silvertone's prompt service. This package has everything you need from learning guitar, including the DVD demo. The guitar is made beautifully in dark brown color, amplifier with cables, DVD....every piece matches the description on the list. We have no complaint with the tutoring DVD but still sent my kid to a guitar lesson, where she started to play her first song. The similar package we found in Target around our neighborhood tagged as $149 plus tax. With couple bucks more, the whole pkg delivered to our front door (thinking of the gasoline price these days...) Overall, this is a good buy!

  4. This is a great guitar for beginners or professionals alike. The amp is great, and the guitar is a quality product. One of my strings broke the day I got the guitar, but we simply replaced it and moved on.

I'd highly recommend this guitar to anyone looking for a quality product at a great bargain.

  5. This was a great deal, a brand I was not familiar with but that really doesn't seem to be a problem. I am new to guitar so I didn't want to start out with something super expensive. It is great for a beginner like myself. The package is a great deal, you get everything you need to start playing as soon as you get the box from amazon.

  1. If you read other reviews of the exact same guitars, only in different colors, you will find people urging you to avoid this guitar.

One should listen to them. I didn't expect them to be tunable nor of any level of acceptable quality, and in that measure, they performed perfectly!

Do not expect to tune them.
Do not expect the bridge to be glued to the guitar, so that it can be lost in an hour.
Do not expect the tuning pegs to be remotely tight -- if you tighten them with a screwdriver, you can change the pitch of the strings, but only barely. and i suspect if you tried to tune it, the body of the guitar would break quite quickly.
Do not expect the nut -- where the headstock meets the neck of the guitar, a small piece of material in which small grooves are carved out to guide the strings -- to be carved enough to hold the strings.

And when you buy it, and it falls apart, you will be forced to mail it back to the seller, which for a lousy $20 seems not even worth it. Buyer beware.

  1. Product was supposed to arrive for Christmas - paid A LOT extra to have it done...it did not arrive and nearly ruined a family member's Christmas. Had to purchase another guitar for him to open on Christmas day...the Austin guitar showed up 3 days after Christmas but we decided to keep it and take the other back b/c it was a better product. I would buy the Austin Bazaar brand again, but not from this company.

  2. The guitar claimed to have all you could ask for for fifty dollars and more. But the guitar i received was missing accessories and the paint was chipped.

  1. For $25 you can't expect much, but this is a good guitar considering the price. It was packed very well, but the strings that came with it were awful - they are difficult (if not impossible) to tune correctly, and they were very corroded when I received it.

The solution was very simple - I bought a new set of strings for a regular guitar. Instead of tuning it like a standard guitar, tune it a fourth or a major third above standard tuning. This is perfect for the size of the guitar, and it sounds great. Remember to use very low gauge strings.

  2. It arived safely (packed so well it would probably survive a plane crash) but the strings were very coroded. The tuners are decent (for a very inexpensive guitar) but once tuned all cords sounded off key. Not playable if you can hear. However if deaf it might be quite fun. The plastic fingerboard, painted binding, and plastic bridge are disapointing, but when this guitar makes it to my chop shop, the bridge pins and tuners might be usefull on another gutar. If you buy it for a child, you won't have to wory about teaching them how to tune. It will make little difference.

  3. The main points for me in deciding to buy this little guitar were the cheap price and the affiliation with Dean Guitars. As a long-time guitar player, it can be a lot of fun to play a little guitar in places a full-size guitar won't work, like in the car. I believe an experienced player will get more out of this than a beginner. Although the quality of this guitar is higher than a toy guitar you find at retail toy stores, it still leaves much to be desired in terms of easy playability. Even with a zero fret, the action on this guitar was way too high. The result was that it was hard to play and hard to tune because the intonation was off. These are the least desireable things for a good beginners guitar. What I did was to file down the grooves in the bridge to lower the action. I also put new strings on the guitar--light gauge because the guitar sounds best tuned to A, in otherwise standard tuning. With these changes, it's become a fun guitar to play. For under $30, I wasn't disappointed by the plastic fretboard, painted-on binding or cheap tuners. The finish is nice and the bridge is distinctive. So, I'd say it's a good toy for an experienced guitarist but a bad guitar for a beginner.

  4. This guitar is great for the price. Sure, it doesn't hold its tune very well, but it works well for my young child. The strings that came on it were absolutely horrible - looked like they'd been doused with water and left out in the sun to dry. Changing the strings made a huge difference in sound quality.

  5. Having been a picker and strummer of six and twelve stringed guitars for nearly 45 years, I found myself offended by the unadvertised aspects of this 'name brand' child's guitar. Nowhere in the advertising does it mention that it simply cannot be tuned to standard concert tuning (a reality quickly admitted by Dean staff when asked,) rendering it useless as a teaching instrument. It must be tuned at least one full note higher and regular concert tuning end even at that, the frets are not accurately enough placed to get consistent sounds (either single notes or chords) from it.
I expected that for under $40., I would have to tune and re-tune it. What I had no cause to expect was that it was physically impossible to tune it correctly in the first place. According to Dean's "Armadillo Customer Service Manager," Brad Mader who responded to some comments he saw about this and sent me a personal email, "Unfortunately due to the size of the guitar & price point, the guitar has to be tuned that way.If you need an acoustic for standard tuning, I would suggest a full size acoustic, something from our Exotic line will work Just fine."
I didn't expect a quality instrument for this little - I am not a fool - But from a company with the reputation and product line of Dean Guitars, I did expect a tunable and playable beginning guitar. The JTJ is simply neither.
As other reviewers have suggested, spend $100. or so and get a reasonable sound and better designed and built guitar. Nothing is more discouraging to any beginning player of any age than an instrument that is simply not designed or built to sound right in the first place.
