  1. This Etude book is a very good teaching method for beginners-advanced alike. Becaue all of the notes on the french horn is made with your lips, it's always good to practice close intervals between notes.

  1. This music book is a success. From Amazing Grace to Russian Sailor's Dance, Standard of Excellence Book 2, has many tunes to help improve your tone quality. This book is also a great choice for middle school level bands that need a book. Being written specifically for more than one instrument, this book has duets and warm ups that can be played as one band. Also, for you French Horn players who know how difficult the instrument can sometimes be, there are the regular songs that can be played as a band, and also the same song but in a different key so that you can start off easily. To top all that off, there are also real band arranged pieces up to over 100 measures long. Now if this isn't a good band book, then I don't know what is!

  1. I am working now for two years with this book (previous edition) and must say it served me well. Also the author himself is available for (virtual) help if needed. The book tells many things not mentioned in the Farkas Horn "Bible" or at least not that deeply. I would recommend it specially to any auto didact (like I am) because the practice exercices are really well explained. So I noted that a Kopprasch does nothing to me because I have no one teaching me what I have to do / work on this etudes. But in Rider's Book I have the explication what and how precisely I have to do with the exercices; but they are exercices, not etudes. All I need besides working on my ensemble pieces. By the way, it also serves as introduction for the very beginner.

  2. I received my copy of "Real World Horn Playing" a few weeks ago and already I am enjoying benefits from it. There are tips & valuable information on nearly every page that have made REAL improvements in my playing. And, a special bonus is that the material is presented in a unique and fresh style with good humor & clarity.

I'm particularly pleased with Mr. Rider's warm up instructions & routine. I learned in the warm up section exactly WHY I often have stiff lips, resistent to free vibration & exactly HOW to remedy the problem. (It works!) This book would be worth triple the price even if it contained nothing more than his warm up instructions & routine! (Especially when you factor in the price of private instruction!) I believe Mr. Rider's warm up instructions & routine would help ALL brass players, not just horn players.

At first glance, the exercises looked like pretty routine stuff. (Oh boy, more lips slurs!) It wasn't until after I read the text & began practicing the exercises in the exact manner Mr. Rider describes that I understood & experienced benefits in my tone, flexibility & musical phrasing. It's the HOW TO that makes the difference.

Mr. Rider's book is a valuable resource to support & supplement the excellent private instruction I receive. Some of the material found in this book are lessons my private instructor has tried to pound into my thick skull, but I just didn't "get" until I read it in his book. But much of the material is innovative and new to me. I recommend this book to all brass students & teachers alike.

    Valerie Wells, Balanced Embouchure Student

  1. This book is awsome, it is a wealth of information that every horn player should know. I love it to death, as has been said before it truely is the bible of french horn playing. If your not the reading type you may not appreciate this book's full potential, but for everyone else: BUY THIS BOOK!

  2. As a Horn teacher for many many years, this is required text for all my students. The "manual" for Horn playing.

  3. 95 pages full of advice for any hornplayer, beginner, advanced or pro. Maybe the fotos and the layout are not best quality, but finally its the content that counts.

  4. This book is my favorite of all time-- and for a teenager, that may seem strange. I have played horn for about four months, and this is my reference for any issues from technical problems, to practice advice, to encouragement and warnings. Philip Farkas speaks in a way that I love-- he offers frank advice and talks to the reader in a voice that clearly states that he is a fellow hornist, a friend helping a friend. His tone is clear, honest, and very distinguished-- I found it very encouraging that he does not speak to the reader in a condescending way. I am extremely encouraged that he offers such a wide variety of advice, though I do question some of his techniques, such as sitting while practicing and advising not to hold the horn "free". I do agree with his preference of a dark, mellow tone, but I believe that can be achieved while holding the horn free if the right hand is in the correct position. Furthermore, Mr.Farkas's book is the bible of french horn and should be commited to memory by each and every hornist that is serious about this art.

  5. A wealth of information. Techniques, warm-up scales, alternate fingerings, transposition, practice music to improve different areas such as range, intervals, pitch. Learned about this from a horn player in the Dallas Symphony when I was in high school, found it very useful when I played with the Guam Symphony, and used it regularly when I returned to playing after several years of absence. Given it to young players across the US and overseas.
