1. I am writing this review as a complete novice. My only experience has been with a bamboo flute for many years. I figure it's about time to learn the basics with a new flute. (There are many good, basic texts, but that's not the focus of this review).
   
   The flute is beautiful. The lacquer finish seems durable-- I have been careful with the instrument. The mechanisms all seem to work properly. After a couple of months (not daily use) one key makes the faintest noise when depressing it. The sound/notes seem good; at least that is the feedback when playing the flute for other flute players. The instrument comes packed from the factory very securely. The included nylon/canvas case is very adequate protection. The cleaning rod & rag is a necessary toot that is included. I notice the price seems to fluctuate; I paid less than $200 early Dec '05. (The silver plated flute also by Hamlin for less may be a better deal, in other words). I do hope to find time to continue practicing. Again, I am just a novice, but since there weren't any reviews for this instrument, I thought it might be helpful to say this buyer is satisfied with this instrument. Have fun!

   MODEL AND CASE WITHOUT BAG. I RETURNED ORDER AND AWAITED THE RIGHT
   FLUTE THAT I HAD ORDERED. TODAY I RECIEVED EXACTLY THE SAME MODEL
   FLUTE THAT I RETURNED. HOW COME? I AM VERY DISAPPOINTED WITH THIS

1. I purchased this instrument 4 years ago, with gold mouthpiece and gold plated headjoint interior, for $800. I play weekly with my church music group, and the flute has been impeccable. I noticed the difference from my previous closed hole model immediately. The sound projects better and more warmly, and it is fairly easy to adapt. For performance you can't beat it! The Gemeinhardt namebrand also carries a very solid reputation.



2. First of all, I don't have this exact model. I have the offset version, where the G key is pushed slightly forward. However, as that's the only sort of flute I've ever played (my previous flutes were like that too), I can't really say what difference it makes. All I know is that this flute is incredible.
   
   When compared to an ordinary Gemeinhardt student flute (no holes, no B flat foot, different material, etc.), the difference is amazing. While the other one could occasionally give off a pleasant sound, this flute gives off a warm, full sound that is stunning compared to the stuffy sound of the student flute. Granted, this is a more difficult flute to play. requiring the player to have been playing for a few years, but once you hit the level of "intermediate", it can last you a lifetime (unless you choose to go pro). The holes come with corks/plugs already in them, making it very easy and convenient to slowly get yourself used to playing a flute with holes in the middle of the keys. The B-flat foot is also very convenient and useful.
   
   One problem arises with this flute that the student flutes don't have, and that's the issue of polishing. As this flute is made of silver (another reason why it is so much better and is more expensive), the upkeep is much more tedious and necessary. Cleaning the flute after every practice is always a given, but now it becomes important to polish the flute every once in a while to make sure it's not going black. However, this is a minor concern and soon becomes habit along with wiping down the flute after practice.
