  1. This flute was returned because of poor construction. The head joint was too loose and leaked air. The foot joint was too tight and required a hwrculean effort to assemble. It took from 9/17/07 to 10/20/07 to get my refund. I hope that this was not indicative of all of their flutes.

  1. Open hole flutes are cool. They are not meant for beginers on flute. The flute had the same fingering as the regular flute you just have to put your fingers over the holes when your playing a note. Gemenihardt is one of the best qualities of flute out there. That's why there expensive but I know for many years they have still been a good durable flute unless you do something that will break any instrument but they don't really break often.

  1. I would never RECOMMEND ANYONE TO SHOP WITH AMAZON OR TARGET ONLINE EVER AGAIN.

I ordered it with more than 10 days to allow for shipment and I keep getting the run around about when it will arrive!!!

It was supposed to be here for a BIRTHDAY on Saturday July 26 2008!!

To date I have still not received it!!

This is a PISS POOR WAY TO DO BUSINESS!!!!

The vendor should have ensured it was in stock and if not contacted me and refunded my funds and told me to find it elsewhere, instead they let me think it would arrive on time, then the day before I needed it they send me a message saying it will be late!!!!

    DON'T DEAL WITH THEM!!

  1. The low range on it sucks and so does playing high. Pads are hard to replace and are insanely expense. It does not play well. The metal is so cheap that any repair man will not fix it. It is very hard to control and not worth 5 cents!

  1. The seller had to have shipped the flute out the very next day. I received the flute the same day as my "Amazon Prime" two day delivery order. It was well packaged and not damaged in any way.
The quality of the flute is amazing. Most flutes, wooden or otherwise, put up a bit of a fight against a novice player from producing a clear full tone. Not this flute. I was holding the flute near my face to examine it when I accidentally breathed out near the blow hole...out came a smooth, full and beautiful tone! It almost plays itself. The tone is distinctive Native American too. Full of love, loss and natural appreciation I think.
Additionally, Spirit Man Walking has put together a very useful beginner's guide and cd to go with it. I practiced for ONE DAY and when my friend arrived at my house while I was playing he said this to me: "When I was walking up your driveway it sounded like a haunted plain was inside your house!" Now, how cool is that!?!

  1. I'm not a flute expert, but I was very happy to find a silver flute at such a low price. The unit appears to be well made - is extremely well packaged for shipment. It comes in a velvet lined hard carrying case (exterior appears to be nylon like a gym bag) with a shoulder strap. Also has a wand for cleaning but no cloth (get a separate cleaning kit). Comes with a small container of petroleum jelly for joints and plastic caps to cover the joints while packaged (helps to keep the petroleum jelly off of the inside of the case).

The flute itself is manufactured in China. It is silver plated and looks nice and has a good tone. I'm a beginner so I tested it against a Korg tuning device - It seems to play normally, as much as I can play!

I ordered with express shipping on a Sunday and received it on Wednesday. I've been very happy with this purchase - I think it's an excellent choice for beginner starting out who wants a good flute but doesn't want to pay a fortune. I did look at Gemeinhardt as I know they have an excellent name but didn't want to pay $150 more for their low-end model.

  2. Here are a few verifiable facts:
    1. The Hamlin Silver Flute was the best selling flute on Amazon.com last year, with hundreds sold.

    2. The number of these flutes returned for a refund is zero! That's 100% customer satisfaction! Not a single customer chose to take advantage of the Amazon.com satisfaction guarantee.

    3. Yes, I am Mark Nicewonger, the head of Hamlin Music Products, and unlike others who write reviews, I'm not afraid to let you know who I am.

  3. Well, I think this flute is of a very reasonable price(even though I brought it a while ago, when it was still priced $200). The flute is very responsive, and I have had no problem with it so far.
It might be true that "you get what you paid for". I might not be able to use this flute in ten-fifteen years, but it is so far a great companion of mine. Just remember that not everyone is able to afford a $1000 flute. That "cool" type of comment (you get what you paid for) sounds very apathetic of others' circumstances.
For music lovers who don't have much money like me, this flute is one of the best offer one can get.
    I would highly recommend it.

  4. I purchased this flute hoping it would be what it appeared -- a mid-priced student flute that would get my daughter through her middle school and high school band classes. (At which point, if she still wanted to play, I might invest in a better quality instrument for her.)

Unfortunately, it fails to perform. As the music teacher who posted a review commented, we've had repeated trouble with the keys. (Including once just before a band competition!) In addition, it is not in tune -- in order to get it to concert pitch she has to pull the head joint out almost a full inch, which is really NOT acceptable.

If the student plans to only play solo pieces, and has someone available to do the necessary adjustments on the keys, it might be a reasonable option. But for a band, even a student level band, it just doesn't do the job.

  5. My seven-year-old stepdaughter wanted to learn to play the flute. She wants to try everything these days, so we can't afford to splash out on the best equipment for every activity she tries. We chose this flute as a christmas present last year.

So far we are quite happy with what we got. If we had bought a flute in the UK, where we live, it would have cost us at least £400 (almost $800). This flute has provided an affordable way to introduce her to the instrument.

that said, the metal on the flute is softer than that of the pricier models sold in music stores. As a result, we've just spent £20 on repairs. We've now told her that she needs to be very gentle with it.

Ultimately, we'll need to upgrade if she gets serious about the flute. But for now, we are pleased with the purchase.
