2 comments about Top Register Studies for Flute.
- Like most amateur flautists, I have always had trouble with the 3rd octave and, in fact, could not play much at all above E6. When I played the F or G above that, I could at best come out with was a high-pitched breathy sound.
I don't know what Mr. Filas' theory is, but mine is that we have trouble with the higher notes because we don't see them that much in the music we regularly play. Like anything difficult that is done infrequently there is a physical anticipation of the high notes and when the body is anxious, it is difficult to perform an exacting task.
By playing these Top Register Studies in which most of the notes are above C6, playing the notes becomes second nature.
I just received this book from Amazon two days ago and I have already noticed a significant improvement in the sound of the higher notes and my sense of relaxation as I anticipate playing them.
I highly recommend this book.
- I've been using the top register studies for about 2-3 weeks now in my private lesson studies at VanderCook College of Music. As a performer and someone who uses the book I think it's great so far, the rhythms are basic so that you practice the notes more than the piece and really work on high fingerings and embouchure control. I start off with them slowly and set tempo marking goals to work up to, that way it's really learning not just playing. As a performer and a future teacher I highly reccommend this product. It has helped me catch those third octave notes much quicker in band and contributes to tone quality through embouchure control experience. It is great for beginners to intermediate to anyone who could use some extra practice on those higher notes!

3 comments about Mel Bay Sacred Solos for the Flute, Vol. 1 (Book/CD Set).
- I have been looking for this type of music and I am enjoying practicing so much that I have to make an effort to stop playing and get other things done!
- We give Vol. 1 and Vol. 2 of this Series a 5-star rating!! These books were recommended to us when my daughter was an aspiring 9th grade flutist. She is now a Flute Performance major at University and both of these books are kept as important elements of her musical library. The music is great for weddings, as well as funerals; church specials, as well as concert pieces. We recommend both volumes (although book ONE is the fav! :)
- I recently played some of these solos for my cousin's wedding. I thought the arrangements were decent although I wish they were more advanced. This would be ideal for a beginner or intermediate flute player. The cd accompaniment that comes with it is not great at all. It is very square and doesn't allow for much freedom or rubato. It isn't a real piano playing either. It is a MIDI recording. I would suggest playing with a pianist.

2 comments about Music for Native American Flute, Vol. 1 (Book & Audio CD).
- Music for Native American Flute is my first songbook by Jessica Walsh, who has penned numerous other books on Celtic, Renaissance, Medieval, world, and ancient Spanish music for flute. Music for Native American Flute Vol. 1 showcases 41 songs from around the globe adapted for Native American flute tablature, most in the key of G.
There are songs from all corners of the globe: from Ireland, Wales, Scotland, England, Italy, Greece, Russia, medieval Spain, Israel, Palestine, Syria, Japan, Canada, First Nations (Ojibway), America, Peru, and Ecuador, all adapted for the range and voice of Native American flute. Each tune is described in the front of the book, its country of origin, and a bit about the tune's history. There is also an audio CD that features all 41 songs, so you can listen as you read/play along. Normally associated with First Nations music, the Native American flute is a virtual chameleon here, taking on the breathiness of a Syrian nay, the haunting song of the Andean panpipes, the dulcet tones of a Medieval recorder. The amazing feat is that a simple instrument that is generally heard in First Nations/New Age music in a much-simplified context has, thanks to Jessica Walsh, pushed the envelope into a virtuosic instrument capable of handling European airs, dance, and Eastern laments. I can't wait until a Vol. 2 is released, hopefully with more Eastern (Indian, Chinese, Middle Eastern) flavour.
- For a Native American flute, I would expect to find some Native American music. Not much here: two of the 41 songs are attributed to North American sources. As a new owner of a flute, I hoped that Volume One would include some easy minor-key tunes with bottom-up fingering, such as used by some 5-hole "beginner's" flutes. Only one short piece like this is included: "Woe Betyd Thy Wearie Bodie," from my Scottish folks, not our proud and nature-sensitive North American precursors.

4 comments about Movie Instrumental Solos: Flute Book W CD.
- This is a great book. I love the pieces in it. I'm actually just a beginner and I can already play the pieces. I LOOOOOOVVE this book!
- I'm a beginner flute player and I like this book too much. The scores included contains beautiful melodies and with the cd you feel that you are playing with an orchestra. The CD contains demos played with flute and orchestra and traks with orchestra only. The sound is real, isn't electronic.
- This book contains a good variety of songs that are quite popular, it makes playing it more fun. What I didn't really like was the rests at the beginning. I really wanted to play right from the start and not rest for 8 measures or so. The CD will be kind of hard to follow if you don't count, so if your looking for music that has easier countings, look for another unless you're going to count. Other than those flaws, this is a very useful book, the solos sound great, and are fun. You can learn a lot from these even if your experienced or mid-level. Even beginniners that are very determined and have a private lesson teacher will find this book useful in their learning.
- I really like this book, the music in it, and the fact it comes with a cd. However, it is not easy music. It varies from medium to hard and the description on amazon makes it sound much easier.
