  1. This is a great book. I love the pieces in it. I'm actually just a beginner and I can already play the pieces. I LOOOOOOVVE this book!

  2. I'm a beginner flute player and I like this book too much. The scores included contains beautiful melodies and with the cd you feel that you are playing with an orchestra. The CD contains demos played with flute and orchestra and traks with orchestra only. The sound is real, isn't electronic.

  3. This book contains a good variety of songs that are quite popular, it makes playing it more fun. What I didn't really like was the rests at the beginning. I really wanted to play right from the start and not rest for 8 measures or so. The CD will be kind of hard to follow if you don't count, so if your looking for music that has easier countings, look for another unless you're going to count. Other than those flaws, this is a very useful book, the solos sound great, and are fun. You can learn a lot from these even if your experienced or mid-level. Even beginniners that are very determined and have a private lesson teacher will find this book useful in their learning.

  4. I really like this book, the music in it, and the fact it comes with a cd. However, it is not easy music. It varies from medium to hard and the description on amazon makes it sound much easier.

  1. I read Kokopelli's flute a few weeks ago. When I finished, which was after a couple days, i enjoyed it. it had an intriguing plot, and was exciting. The story-line kept me interested, but I thought that the book lacked depth. its was kind of fluffy, and aimed wards children. I did enjoy the literary componets of the corporate developability. I only gave the book 3 stars out of five, for the lack of personal connection, and charactor development.
    My compliments to the author.

  3. In the moonlight of a total eclipse, young Tepary Jones's first lunar eclipse, a tragedy occurred. The last untouched Indian site was being robbed of priceless pottery. Two pothunters had come to rob the picture house. Though suspicious, Tep undertakes to run them off.

The superstitious pothunters are easily driven away. After an owl hoot, Tep lit a tumbleweed and dropped it over the cliff, causing it to burn away in the air sending them running. When he took a closer look at the dig, he found a basket containing ancient medicine and an eagle bone flute. Though he knew better, Tep put the flute to his lips and blew one magical note. He laughed, watching a wood rat coming to hear the music. The next morning the famous Mr. K, a secret botanist, sent another package containing once again beans for the seed farm. Among the package of beans were also strange types of gourd that will become life saving in the future. After a hard day's work planting the seeds, Tep goes back to his room to bed and watches his pet opossum come through a hole in the roof. As the sun goes down Tep feels funny, looks at his hands and comprehends he has turned into a wood rat. Remembering that Wood rats are an opossum's main diet, Tep was almost eaten by his pet. Tep's inquisitive single note on the eagle bone flute had turned him into the rat by night.

An epidemic virus that is carried by pack rats and crossed transmitted to humans who die from the virus is sweeping the desert. The only cure for the virus is the medicine Tep found in the ancient basket. Tep, being a wood rat in size, is unable to retrieve the medicine. Taking the flute from the basket in desperation, Tep breaks the code with three blows on the flute and returns to human form. This allows him to carry the medicine back and save the day.

Kokopelli's Flute, named for the one Tep found in the basket, is a twisted story of heroism. I found the story enchantingly good. I recommend this book.

  4. My teacher read this book to us and it was BORING! The only

reason why I gave it a 1 out of 5 is because it waisted

school time. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes

being bored. I would also recommend this book to anyone who

likes not knowing what they are reading about. All of the

    names were long and unpronounceable.

I'm not interested in that kind of stuff anyway. It was the

worst book that I have ever

read or heard. I couldn't tell you one thing

about this book if I had to. I

  5. Kokopelli's Flute is a delightful fantasy. It centers around a family of three who live in the desert and raise "heritage seeds". Heritage seeds are seeds for plants that have fallen out of favor in our commercial times. Seeds cannot survive forever. They must be planted and new seeds harvested in order to keep the DNA from becoming extinct. Against this background, the son visits an ancient cliff dwelling. He discovers some men are trying to illegally ransack the ruins for artifacts they can sell. In the course of this discovery, he takes possession of a bone flute. When he blows on the flute he enables some magic that transforms him into an animal every night. He discovers that being an animal has its benefits but also many dangers! He needs to thwart the criminals and also discover how to negate the flute's magic. In addition to enjoying an engrossing story, one learns a great deal of factual material about heritage seeds and archeology. I have enjoyed all the titles that I have read by this author but I think this is one of my favorites.

4 comments about Method for the One-Keyed Flute.
  1. The book has great instruction at your fingertips to start learning the one-keyed flute. There is so much here! But it's not bogged down with copious trivia. This book is especially helpful for the Boehm flutist who wishes to transition into some baroque flute playing. When you purchase this volume, you'll have everything you need (apart from the instrument itself!) to get started, and also to avoid injury to your hands and fingers through incorrect position or over-practicing. Wonderful, sound advice clearly presented.

  2. This is one of the best method books I've seen for a historical instrument. Every essential topic is covered: tuning, intonation, articulation, fingering, baroque & classical ornamentation (fingering for trills off of each note, for instance). Period sources (notably Quantz, plus several others) are quoted frequently. There is also a good discussion on the differences between different historical models. Plus there is a wealth of exercises and tunes from the period. While not pretending to be complete in every sense, this is far superior to many methods I've seen for recorder and other instruments. It's also quite affordable.

  3. Wonderful book.
Excellent exercises and full of history.
I'm not an expert in traverso, but the fingering chart is very complete and ideal for who want to learn by yourself.

  4. I have been playing the modern, silver (Boehm system) flute for over 25 years as a hobby and a magnificent obsession. For some time, I had been thinking about playing the baroque or one-keyed flute. The thought of moving to an instrument with a softer, subtler sound fashioned from organic material (wood) appealed to me. Expressing this interest to my flute teacher recently, he very kindly volunteered to loan me two of his baroque flutes (a boxwood Folkers & Powell and an ebony Von Huene) to see which I preferred, along with this book. For the past two months, I have spent some time on a self-guided study of these new instruments with the help of this book which I am finding to be an amazingly informative, straightforward and an extremely practical introduction to this instrument. It takes the reader from a point of knowing very little about playing a one-keyed flute to a point of playing a full repertoire and then beyond to the "top 13" 18th century flute tutors. Starting with the history of the instrument and then moving to the very basics of holding the instrument, developing a sound, developing a tone, intonation and fingerings, it lays out very clear charts, trill tables and over 80 pages of exercises, scale studies and music to play.

As noted in the preface, this book is intended as a method book written for players of the Boehm-system flute who are already somewhat familiar with tone production and modern flute technique hoping to provide the flutist with information for the initial approach to the instrument. It is not intended as a musicological treatise, but a practical and useful guide which cites historical sources offering "a broad diversity of opinions which challenge us to explore the ideas of 18th century writers and incorporate them into our present-day experience."

Dockendorff Boland advises taking a little time each day to focus on learning the instrument, incorporating in that study readings from the early flute tutors such as Quantz On Playing the Flute: Second Edition, Hotteterre Principes de la Flute. Reprint der Amsterdamer Ausgabe von 1728 etc., as well as paying attention to the work done by players all over the world in developing their own expression.

This book goes a long way in demystifying the understanding and comprehension of a historic instrument making it accessible to anyone willing to take a little time to learn.

  1. I myself being a White Mountain Apache, love the idea of haveing one of our legands written, I think it is very good to let the outside world see what the Apaches are like, we are not the blood thirsty people Hollywood makes us out to be, infact, we are so the oppsite. Mr. Lacapa shows that the Apache people had a lot of love, in having the girl fall ill, after not being with the boy for a long time is so sweet! I totally loved the story! The illustration is so nicely done! You have to read the book on your own to really appriciate it.

  1. The "Essential Elements : A Comprehensive Band Method - Book 2" is a great book for a young person who is learning an instrument for the first time. There is a fingering chart in the back of the book to make looking up fingerings quick and easy. The book starts off very basic with the parts of the instrument. The easiest notes to play and finger are presented first with exercises to practice them.

Hal Leonard also offered other books (though I haven't found them on Amazon) that correlate (they even tell you what pages they go along with) with some of the skills in this book. They are:
    Essential Elements Movie Favorites
    Essential Elements Broadway Favorites
    Essential Elements Patriotic Favorites

    Practice makes PERMANENT, not PERFECT.

2 comments about Solos for Flute: 36 Repertoire Pieces with Piano Accompaniment (All-Time Favorites) (All-Time Favorites).
  1. My 12 year old daughter is in her 2nd year (7th grade) of flute playing -- she is in the school band but does take private lessons from a classical music flute artist, once a week. My daughter is really enjoying this book. However, she could NOT work with these pieces of music with out her private teacher. I recommend this book for students who study privately aside from the school band.

  2. I have been using this book for about 2-3 weeks in my private lesson studies at VanderCook College of Music, while studying to be a music educator. I have played only 2 selections from the book prior to buying it. I'm using this to expand my repertoire and work on various techniques that each piece demands. I think it is great for repertoire, working with accompanament (since it comes with the piano book), and just expanding horizons on what you would like to play and what you can play. I highly reccommend it for anyone looking for some new music. As far as playing ability I suggest the flutist already be comfortable with fingerings into the third octave, be able to read fairly fluently, be able to articulate notes (this will help practicing/learning more articulation types as the pieces demand, always better with a private teacher), and be able to consciously count during each piece. But then again these are things I hope for in every intermediate-advanced musician. Great pieces!
