1 comments about Mel Bay's Encyclopedia of Scales & Modes for Electric Bass.
- Not much to be said. If you're looking for exactly what's stated in the title, you get it. Complete and , for the use I made of it so far, reliable. I've always found Mel Bay ( and Hal Leonard too) publications up to their fame

2 comments about Build Your Own Electric Guitar: Custom Guitar Assembly Made Easy.
- Bill Foley's seminal work proved very helpful for me. One could not ask for a more complete text on building a custom electric. I got into guitars and found that the beauty of the construction was something that I had to learn more about. This book gives instructions on how to assemble your own custom axe from popular manufacturers' assembly-ready guitar parts. And even if you aren't going to make your own, buy this one to learn all about how the different parts work, from standard pickups to humbuckers, from tremolo and tonal controls to passive, noiseless pickups. The advice he gives also helped me choose specific components for my guitar, and then told me how to put it all together. Although it is out of print, try to order it through Amazon's Out-of-Print service, which has helped me in the past. A must for a guitar lover.
- This is an interesting book for complete beginners. The instructions show the reader how to assemble a custom made guitar from popular manufacturers parts. There are no photos, only drawings. The wiring diagrams appear to be quite useful. When used in conjunction with a proper parts catalogue like Stewart-Macdonald's, it would appear that the reader should be able to construct his or her own custom built electric guitar.

- This book is better than most because it starts simply and gradually expands the concept of Walking Bass. Harmonically it is excellent but is let down buy lack of rhyhmic ideas (ie none).A Glossary of rhythmic patterns/ideas at the end would have been nice. And why do writers insist on TAB when
1. Doublebass doesn't have frets and
2. What happened to learning to read.
Instead of TAB I would prefer suggested fingering for the musical phrases (bass lines). This would often help when transposing key too.
- The cd is very nice, well recorded, bass on left.
The methods I've used and some others i've heard and wondered about are clearly explained here with examples.
Recording is with acoustic upright bass, great sound.
Tabs help to get fingering and double check where I am before my reading catches up with my intentions to play better. ;)
Insane value, this kind of material easily is worth 3 times as much.
I can apply these techniques of leading, chromatics, and the exapmles of the combinations of these and other approaches without knowing how to read since i'm good at patterns, so this is very valuable to me.

5 comments about Mel Bay Presents the Electric Bass, Vol. 1.
- Both of these books by Roger Filiberto are terrible. The exercizes consist of nothing but variations of the same exercize you learn in the beginning of the book. Everything about the book screams "outdated." Good for learning the basics of sight reading and nothing else. This is a book for extreme beginners, particularly people who don't even know what a bass guitar is.
- The word that one of my new students used was "CHEESY"
It is by far the most uninteresting and uninspiring teaching material for bass EVER
- The beauty of the original Mel Bay book catalog, this book included, is that learning from them without an instructor is like deciphering secret code. The books contain excellent information, but first you must figure out how to understand what they say. I own many Mel Bay titles, and I can honestly say that anything from 1970 or earlier should not be used by a beginner without an instructor to help you understand them. If you're like me though, you'll embrace the challenge and learn about the magic they contain without using an instructor. This is an excellent book for that type adventure!
As for the other reviewers who believe this title to be truly awful, I ask them to give this title another chance. If it seems "cheesy" or "repetitious", try to read more into what is being taught. I think you'll be pleasantly suprised. These books haven't been recommended by music instructors for all these years for nothing. For those who may not comfortable with just learning from the book itself, Mel Bay offers vol.1 and vol. 2 together in another title called, "Complete Electric Bass Method". This "Complete" version includes a CD and DVD which will allow someone to learn from the book along with an audio and visual teaching aid.
Good luck with your studies.
- I'm just learning to play bass guitar,I have both this book and Bass guitar for Dummies. I find this book more methodical, it teaches you to read and play the notes one string at a time. It reads like a text book you would get in a music class, but those type of books are the best to learn by. By the end of studying this book you will be able to learn the notes, how to play those notes and you'll learn how to read sheet music. Playing actual songs will be a reality when you finish studying this book. There is also a second volume that will teach you arpeggios and chords to round out your bass apprenticeship. I found it a better learning tool than Bass guitar For Dummies which is more for Experienced beginners to intermediate players
- My music instructor assign home study using this book, great tool for studing and practicing skills.

5 comments about Blue Book of Electric Guitars.
- Had to return this stinker fast. Very incomplete book for guitars alone, never mind their value (Which most are valued too low in here). Inexperienced author (not the guy on the cover), some kid. I could not believe how bad it was. Format is terrible, it's painful looking up a particular guitar. A Good book for this type of info is Vintage Guitar Price Guide. It is a four star book (still incomplete) - I've yet to see a five star on this subject.......??
- THE BLUE BOOK OF ELECTRIC GUITARS is a great book featuring information about different guitars, both old and new. Some information here needs to be taken like the humor in comedy films featuring Cameron Diaz, Jennifer Love Hewitt, Alyson Hannigan, Sarah Michelle Gellar, and/or Melissa Joan Hart, because instruments that are still in production are listed as discontinued, but it's still a wonderful book.
- I use this book as a reference in pricing. I have found it to be a very valuable tool for a starting point on pricing. Also, I have found it to be a very handy reference to locate model information without having to go to several sources. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in collecting or buying vintage guitars.
- This book is great not just prices but a ton of knowledge that is extremely helpful... What to watch for and how to verify it... There are always those that try to get a little more than they deserve in any business... After reading this books hints and tips it is like you have twenty years experience in buying selling trading guitars... Many of my long time guitar experience friends are amazed when I come up with things that even they didn't know... Like serial codes that indentify what country their guitars were made... One of the biggest bang for the buck books I have bought in a long time...
- If you're a total guitar nut like me, this is a must have book. The 10th edition is the best yet. It's a tremendous resource for brand information, model specs, history, and pricing. While I found some errors and disagree with a few price listings, it is still one of the best books of its kind. It's a toss-up of which I like better between this and the Vintage Guitar Guide book. The Blue Book of Electric Guitars 10th edition has more brands and is a bigger book, but the Vintage Guitar Price Guide 2008 has more accurate information and better research. For example, the Blue Book only has a few USA Kramers included, while the VG book has more vintage models listed and a better written history. But the VG book doesn't include a great company/luither like Wollerman, while the Blue Book has a nice section for that brand. The Blue Book has a better section on ESP, and the VG has a better section on Charvel. Both books cover Gibson and Fender well. I say a serious guitargeek needs both books. Neither is overly impressive with accurate pricing, but the Blue Book provides more ranges which is nice. They both do give you a ball-park figure and lots of fun info. I read both of them cover-to-cover, yearly.

1 comments about Mel Bay's Electric Bass Method-2.
- Assuming that the reader followed the lessons of book #1, Mel Bay's Bass #2 continues to guide beginners through formulating basic riffs to accompany guitarists. Echoing the rockabilly style of his time, Bay provides scale patterns as well as simple, but fun, walking lines (without tab). If a beginner is looking for a throroughly educating book, this is the one!

1 comments about Reading Contemporary Electric Bass: Guitar Technique.
- Like many other Berklee Bass books, this DOES NOT have a CD.
That makes this a very difficult book to work through, especially on your own. Maybe, with an Advanced instructor, it would be easier. But, for self-study, the authors do not provide enough insight or assistance. Also, something very troubling I found with this book -- there were places where special notations were used but never referenced. The authors seem to be in such a hurry to present complex information that they neglect EXPLAINING the references and notations they use. This makes it IMPOSSIBLE to understand what they're trying to communicate. Very Frustrating and a major no-no for any published work that claims to be "instructional". This book should have gone through a "technical edit" process before it was published.
