3 comments about Music Man: 1978 to 1982 (And Then Some!): The Other Side of the Story.
- As an owner of a 1980 Music Man 212-75 amplifier, I was pleasantly surprised to see this book come out, however it is not exactly what I had in mind. It is not the nuts-and-bolts look at the amplifiers or guitars that players might have in mind. It does not cover in depth the reasons behind the development of the guitars and amps and why they were made the way they were. Rather this book is more in tune to the business side of things and how the instruments were promoted and sold over the years they were made. The book is a "tribute to Tom Walker" and makes him the star of Music Man with Forrest White at his side. Leo Fender comes out to a lesser degree than I had known before, to my disappointment. All in all, the book is interesting to the hard core Music Man owner or fan, but there is more to be written.
- This is a good book from a historical standpoint, but yuck, what horrible paper & type and the pictures look like cheap photocopies of photocopies etc.
I was hoping for a nice, slick glossy colored photo tribute to a great chapter in music history.
- As the owner of a Music Man HD-130 Reverb amp, I was looking forward to reading about a neglected era. Music Man was active from 1972-82, and the amplifiers underwent some interesting changes during that period.
Alas, you won't learn about any of that here. There are lots of photos of NAMM show exhibits, and promotional doodads, and of the author with various persons he worked with.
What is lacking is any substantive history of MM (the author joined in 1978, and he treats the period prior -- the most interesting to the reader -- as unimportant).
Worse, he is addicted to exclamation points! There are ten on title page!! When he uses one to end a paragraph, he has to use two to end the next one, and then three!!!
It's like being yelled at by someone with bad breath.
Poorly edited (surely someone in a position of authority would have excised all those "!" out of the text), ramblingly written with little focus on the actual company and its technology and much lingering over how much fun the author had on European jaunts, it does not fulfill the still-existing void of information. I don't know any more about Music Man than when I started, except that the deification of Tom Walker is a sort of counterbalance to his image from books by his colleagues and contemporaries.
I wanted to like this book, but there's nothing there.
