- This is not a dulcimer. This is obviously a cheap knockoff of the Martin Backpacker. That said, it is still a fun little knockaround guitar. Once you figure out the floating bridge and exactly how to tune the thing (which is not entirely futile), you can get some good sound from it. It is not solid wood in any way shape or form, except possibly the neck, but that has no impact on tone, really.
This is just a cheap piece of garbage, but it IS FUN TO PLAY! SERIOUSLY! If you are away from home and do not want to take your good guitar out with you, just take this little thing. If you fall on it and totally tear it to bits, what's the loss?
Then again, if you're getting this little backpacker clone from this guy, you're paying way too much. You should pay about $1.00 or LESS for the guitar.
I would advise getting on ebay and looking up "Backpacker" as you can get this exact same guitar for $1.00. Yes...Just one dollar. I was extremely surprised to see this on here for $30. That's how much mine cost in total with the gig-bag, strings, picks, tuner, and shipping and handeling and insurance. If you get this from this guy on Amazon, you are getting screwed. If you purchased this already, you should go get the lube, my friend.
I give this 4 stars because you get what you pay for, and nothing more. If all else fails, you've gotten yourself a decent gig-bag for your future Martin Backpacker. Personally, I got it while I wait for my wife to let me have my real guitar for Christmas.
- The travel guitar only cost $29, not much money. I tuned it up like my
dulcimer, using DAA tuning two strings for each note. The travel guitar has more volume than my mountain dulcimer and you don't have to keep figuring out what you are going to do about some of the half steps, (sharps, flats), because they are right there.Combining the bass string notes with the melody string notes you have a huge range. (My only experience is on the mountain dulcimer)
I used my digital tuner to check the notes and each fret is a half step.
Maybe it didn't cost much, but for the places we go (senior centers, fairs and rest homes) this shold be great, and the price is right. This instrument should be a lot of fun.

4 comments about 6 String Travel Guitar - Blue (Blowout Sale - Limited Time Only!).
- First, this is more of a strum stick than a bona fide dulcimer.
It will be hard to find music for a 6 stringer, but you can adapt the strings to a D-A-D configuration. You play this like a cheap guitar.
Second, it should always be priced in the $30 range or less because it is inexpensive quality and mass produced so this advertisement about "Blowout Sale - Today Only" which has been going on for awhile really isn't true. It is not worth $90+ to begin with.
Third, you will need a tuner because this strum stick comes untuned. It does come with a nice carrying case, extra string, and a pick.
Conclusion: If you want to play an authentic 3-4 string dulcimer on your lap like the original musicians did and do, this is not the instrument for you.
- This is actually not any sort of dulcimer. It is a sort of cheap knockoff of Martin's Backpacker guitar. The Martin is quite clever in that the neck and sides are all one piece of wood. This one is merely a neck glued to a similarly shaped body. The construction and finish are rather crude. The fretboard is whatever nondescript wood dyed black, body is plywood, and the finish looks like sprayed enamel.
This guitar differs from the Martin BP in having a floating bridge and tailpiece. The bridge is deeply slotted, which robs tone (what tone you could get from the small plywood body), but is necessary in order to get a more reasonable spacing of the strings, since the tailpiece is way too narrow (and probably from a children's toy guitar). I could position the bridge to give reasonable intonation, but the break angle of the strings is too small to give good tension on the bridge. The tuners are about in par for the rest of the gutiar. They do turn, actually, just not well.
Actually, I mostly wrote this review to point out that the demensions are similar to the Backpacker. The guitar is actually nearly 36 inches long, not the 24 or 25 inches described.
In short, you are getting what you pay for. And $30 for a guitar will not get you much.

- this item is made of cheap wood and is not able to be tuned. when i tried to tune it for the first time the screw in the bridge was pull up throughthe wood leaving an unfixxable gaxs.
it is ok looking and would make a good decorative piece but nothing more. think very hard about it before you spend your money on this item!

- I wanted a dulcimer for a long time, but since I never played one before and have limited musical (as well as financial) talents to put towards it, I thought well here is one I can afford and if I can't play it, well I can probably get my money back out of it. I also thought what kinda dulcimer am I gonna get for this cheap of money. My expectations were not high. I was pleasantly surprised. The dulcimer is handcrafted (in Romania) made with all solid woods, mine appears to be spruce.
This dulcimer is VERY nice. It is quite lovely actually and it came with a pick and noter devise as well as a limited instruction sheet and a first song. Within 30 minutes I was able to make the song sound actually pretty good, and I have never played dulcimer before, ever. The only thing that this one needed was to be tuned when it arrived. I tuned it according to instructions found over at www.everythingdulcimer.com and it is just lovely sounding. A very nice first instrument.
- I charged this to my creditcard and within a few days I recieved the package via ups but all it was, was a bunch of boxes within boxes and packing material... no dulcimer ..contacted company numerous times either the line went dead when I called or no emails replies
- When I first recieved this dulcimer, I was shocked at its light weight, and thought I had purchased something akin to a toy-guitar. However, after learning to play it, and taking lessons, I discovered that this is a very nice, affordable instrument, with a good tone. I would recommend not using the guitar picks that are offered on this site. A better alternative is the flexible dulcimer picks, which make a much nicer sound.
- I received this dulcimer a few weeks ago, and I am quite pleased with it. It is very beautiful, sounds lovely, and is lightweight; the only complaint that I have with it is that when I tuned it in Mixolydian mode (or so I thought), I thought it didn't sound right; however, I'm a newbie, and I didn't tune the dulcimer into Ionian mode before I tuned it into Mixolydian mode, so that might be why. By the way, if you've never played or tuned a dulcimer before, I suggest you tune it to Ionian mode. It's a great first-time mode, and you can find out how to tune it to that mode at many different dulcimer websites.
- Assembled in Romania using commodity plywood and cheap Chinese tuners, this is an instrument to avoid -- ESPECIALLY if you're likely to develop an affinity for the dulcimer.
While the open strings will tune properly, chords will sound terrible thanks to the assembly-line luthiership. The shoddy nut and bridge, combined with automated fretwork, is a nightmare.
Yes, it is cheap, but beginners will not be able to advance very far, and those with any experience with string instrument will draw the wrong conclusions about dulcimers.
If you are really on a budget and are unsure about dulcimers, even a cardboard --- yes cardboard -- dulcimer is superior to this one. A good cardboard dulcimer is about the same price.
But if you can spend even $125, you can find nicely crafted student dulcimers from a variety of American luthiers.
