4 comments about Picture Yourself Drumming: Step-by-Step Instruction for Drum Kit Setup, Reading Music, Learning from the Pros, and More.
  1. My brother bought this book for my son and I. we have both been studying it and have found it to be the most comprehensive starter instructional book out there. This really covers the nuts and bolts of getting started on a drum kit, both the mechanical aspects of setting up the equipment and the musical aspects of how to make music on the kit. It should be mandatory with every drum kit sold to an aspiring drummer. I think it will help many new drummers get a solid start on the kit rather then the usual frustration encountered. I highly recomend it.

  2. I must concur w/ reviewer Bobo Nadrumbo; this book should be sold w/ every drum kit sold. Had I owned this instructional manual 40 years ago I might not have given up the drums and picked up the bass, even if I had still made the switch I would have experienced far less frustration moving from the marching snare to a full kit. It's straightforward, humorous, and practical too a fault in both musical and mechanical content. I've performed w/ Jon Peckman and I can tell you he definetely knows the drums. As a teacher myself I can tell you after reading this book and watching the DVD he also apparently knows how to breathe life into what is often an uninspriing dry academic subject. This is practical application that won't put you to sleep and will make you a happier and better drummer quickly if you put in the time.....and your bassist will thank you for buying it if no-one else does.

  3. From a step-by-step setup for a drum kit to reading music, learning professional drumming techniques, and practicing the right way, PICTURE YOURSELF DRUMMING is for any beginning drummer who wants to start out on the right foot. Learn how to use expert techniques to make a band sound great, play and invent grooves, and more with this book/DVD package which offers up a logical, progressive drum instructional perfect for drummers who would supplement classroom teachings with more specific routines for advancement.

  4. I borrowed this book from the library 4 times before I decided I just had to add this to my collection. From the beginner to the novice drummer, there's something for everyone in this book. It takes you from what the "job description" of a drummer is, how to get a kit, how to set it up and tune the drums, how to read music, basic beats, advanced beats, fills, more fills, advanced drumming techniques and then where to go from there (ie, join a band, music lessons, recordings, etc).
I've been a drummer (on and off) for almost 18 years now and did the garage band thing back in the day. I still learned quite a few things from this book.
It's also a very easy read. So much so that my impatient 11 year old son picked it up and figured out how to lay a basic click. If it works for him.. hey, you gotta get this book!
The absolute only thing I would have liked different about this book is to have audio tracks either with or in place of the dvd. I'm not usually around a tv/dvd setup, especially when practicing. But I do have a cd/mp3 player handy. However, the dvd is fantastic! Far better quality and detail than I expected.
In summary, you can't afford not to get this book. If you're just starting out, this is your launch point. If you're already playing, this will shore up your educational/experience shortfalls. Something for everyone here, a real winner.

2 comments about Not for the Faint of Heart: My Journey to Manhood in the Santa Clara Vanguard.
  1. Any student of music will definitely want to add "Not for the Faint of Heart" to their collection. Spike takes you on a very personal, realistic, and memorable adventure through his exciting seasons in DCI. If you are considering joining a corps, or have previously marched, you will especially enjoy reading this book.

  2. This is a no holds barred story about a young man who grows up when he joins the famous Santa Clara Vanguard Drum & Bugle Corps. He shares his experience with amazing detail. You'll feel like you're right there with him, living in the moment.

Who should read this book? It's a "must-have" for anyone ever associated with the Vanguard or who want to be. For anyone else, it's a wonderful story of growing up and enduring some great positive "life lessons."

It's a fantastic tribute to one of the greatest drum and bugle corps to ever take the competitive marching arena. I recommend it without reservation.

2 comments about Gene Krupa Drum Method.
  1. Gene Krupa's original text guides the beginning drummer through everything from stick selection to being a "quadridexterous" drummer (combining the use of both arms and legs). He focuses on making sure the student learns even the most basic aspects of drumming thoroughly, and each lesson builds upon the last, as any good instruction should. Also, all the well-known drumming rudiments are taught, such as paradiddles, rolls, and flams. From talking to more experienced drummers, most have said that this is the best way to learn to drum; it's only too bad that the rudiments have been ignored in favor of the five-minute "this is a basic rock beat" lesson. I have found this book very easy to teach yourself from.

Experienced drummers will also enjoy this book, with several of Gene's solos in the back. Songs such as "Sing, Sing, Sing," "Caravan," and a neat little cowbell lick, among others, are included. This book is a must for the beginning drummer, the jazz drummer, and Gene Krupa fans!

  2. The book is too small to be of practical use, about 5" by 5". To use the exercises it is necessary to enlarge them. The book is poor on explanation. From such a great drummer I was expecting a much better book. Some of the exercises are good so the book is not a total waste.

2 comments about The Great American Drums and the Companies That Made Them, 1920-1969.
  1. A great resource for drum lovers. Details on all the major drum companies and some I had never heard of. Also has historic pictures of the people and places. Highly reccommend.

  2. A great book, with great photographs of all of the important drums made in America during most of the 20th century. The author has given all the important details of the major and minor US drum companies in a concise manner.

As an overview, this is a great book, and will introduce the uninformed to the interesting world of vintage drums. For the expert collectors, it's an invaluable resource.
