5 comments about The Dance of Anger: A Woman's Guide to Changing the Patterns of Intimate Relationships.
  1. What an eye opener! I highly recommend it to all women. It's like seeing suddenly your blind spots - sometimes not pretty but what a relief to understand yourself better, to understand why we do what we do. I will give it to my daughter when she's adolescent. And to all young women in my family. Thank your for writing it, Mrs. Lerner!

  2. Very insightful. If you can't figure out why you're not getting along with family check this out.

  3. This was the first book that I read in Lerner's Dance series
and I must say, it changed my life. The book teaches you how
to break out of the familial patterns that keep you stuck in
one position: the backseat. No, you won't become an overly
angry woman but I certainly felt like that at times. Instead,
it shows you where anger comes from and how to talk to others
without screaming at them. I learned how to become more assertive.

Lerner asserts that it's dangerous for a woman not to speak
her mind, however, society says that speaking out is equivalent
to being bitter or angry or anti-male. This is NOT what Lerner
wants women to learn but instead learn how to take a more
self-assertive position in intimate relationships. If, like
me, you had a problem in the past with being real at all times
and telling others how you truly felt, then please grab this book!

  4. EVERY married person, male or female, should read this book. Very well written, interesting, and knowledgable. My husband and I agree that if we would have read this book a year ago, we would not be separated and in counseling. I can't wait to read the rest of her books!

  5. this book was life changing for me ...creating an epiphany moment of transformation and healing ... truly a must read for every woman !!

5 comments about Broadway Musicals: The 101 Greatest Shows of All Time.
  1. Wonderfully researced by people who love musical theatre--brief paragraphs of backstage and unknown situations behind the scenes-- a must for the musical theatre "groupie"

  2. I am a high school theatre teacher. I was looking for a textbook for my musical theatre class when I came across this wonderful reference book. While it doesn't have all of the shows I need, it is a wonderful way to look at some of the most popular musicals in a condensed version with beautiful pictures and interesting trivia. My students love the book so much, they do not want to return it to the school at the end of the semester. They keep it and pay the fee for a missing book. It is reasonably priced for a coffee table book.

  3. I ordered this book as a birthday present for my boyfreind because he is really big into musical theater. I placed the order late Thursday afternoon and the UPS man delivered the book Friday evening, it was the fastest service I've ever experienced.
Not only does the book have tons of colorful, glossy pictures but it's packed with quite a bit of commentary and information. He loved it! Great product, I reccomend it for anyone who is a fan of musicals.

  4. I received this as a birthday gift and love it! I'm just a little surprised at the selection that made it to the 101 shows included in the book. No Rent? Really??? Regardless of your opinion on the show, it is surely one that should make it on a list of 101 greatest shows..

  5. If you saw Dori Berinstein's illuminating 2007 documentary, Show Business - The Road to Broadway, you got close to an all-access peek into the 2003-2004 Broadway theater scene that gives you a sense of the chaos, diligence, exhaustion, and luck that goes into mounting a musical. Two of the four shows spotlighted, "Avenue Q" and "Wicked" are still running as of this date, and unsurprisingly, they are included in the list here. The other two, "Taboo" and "Caroline, or Change", did not fare as well, at least at the box office, and such is the fate of most efforts trying to make it to the Great White Way. Co-authors Ken Bloom (also a Broadway musical performer) and Frank Vlastnik have compiled an eminently entertaining coffee-table book describing what they consider the 101 greatest musical productions staged on Broadway. They seem to have a thing for such lists because last year, they compiled the genuinely addictive Sitcoms: The 101 Greatest TV Comedies of All Time.

Both books share the co-authors' enthusiasm for their topics. Most such entertainment reference books stick with mainly the facts of the productions, but Bloom and Vlastnik go beyond the relevant statistics about each show and inject plenty of behind-the-scenes information along with a surprisingly sharp level of critical commentary on how justified the legacy are of these productions. The challenge of this tome, however, is that most of us have not seen the original-run productions discussed and can't really provide a personal response to the co-authors' collective viewpoint. For me, among the 101 shows, I have only seen "Sweeney Todd", "Dreamgirls", "Avenue Q" and "The Drowsy Chaperone" during their original runs. At the same time, the co-authors give you a palpable sense of what probably were incandescent performances onstage - Fred Astaire in "The Band Wagon", Vivienne Segal in "Pal Joey", Gertrude Lawrence in "The King and I", Ethel Merman in "Gypsy", Julie Andrews in "My Fair Lady", Gwen Verdon in "Sweet Charity", Michael Crawford in "The Phantom of the Opera".

The rarely seen black-and-white and color photos make this an indispensable record of these lightning-in-the-bottle shows. There are sidebars for particularly noteworthy performers and other creative dynamos behind the curtain. Similar to the approach taken with "Sitcoms", the co-authors devote special pages to infamous flops, guilty pleasures, great scores from so-so shows, star turns that have become mythic, film stars who tried to conquer Broadway, and even shows with T&A. There are opening remembrances from luminaries like Angela Lansbury ("Mame") and Chita Rivera ("West Side Story") and an introduction carried over from the 2004 edition by the late Jerry Orbach ("Promises, Promises"). Naturally, some shows you would expect to be included are not, arguable candidates such as "Rent", "Les Misérables", "The Producers" and "Hairspray". Moreover, the one flaw with the approach here is the somewhat arbitrary exclusion of musicals whose scores were created for another project. That's why you won't see long-running shows like "42nd Street", "Ain't Misbehavin'", "Mamma Mia!", and "The Lion King" in the book. Regardless, this book is a fine document for any musical theater aficionado with a penchant for breaking out into a show tune.

5 comments about A Dance to the Music of Time: First Movement (Dance to the Music of Time).
  1. First off the mark, this is a review only of the "First Movement", the first three novels, the title of this volume (q.v. the top of the page). I don't know why reviewers who have read the entire opus have decided to post their reviews here when there is a complete set available on Amazon under which they can post such reviews. It rather spoils it for the rest of us who have only read this volume. In any event, this is my review of that volume; you can find my reviews of the other three volumes under their respective titles after I read them. ----Do I sound a bit too Widmerpool here?

The comparisons with Proust: Proust is much better, more poetic and profound, than Powell. The narrator, Marcel, pulls you in to an almost solipsistic universe in which he, while outwardly passive, remains the main character throughout in his work, exposing the readers to the deep vicissitudes in his intense inner life. Our narrator here, Nick Jenkins, seems an almost completely empty vessel save for his detached reflections. That's how it seems to me....so far.

It also seems to me that to really catch the wry humour here you have to have lived in England or among English people for a considerable amount of time. If one reads the exchanges herein in American accent, the delicious nuances fall flat. Such as in an exchange as this one where Eleanor and Sir Gavin are debating whether to attend the luncheon at the Donners castle:

"I don't know what you call neighbours," said Eleanor. "Stourwater is twenty-five miles at least."

"Nonsense," said Sir Gavin. "I doubt if it is twenty-three."

That cadence that leads up to the stress on the final syllable, "three", is what makes the exchange so gorgeously droll. Yes, it is still somewhat funny in American English. But, well, you see what I mean.

Despite these reservations, I find myself in profound disagreement with the reviewer who says that this volume is "literally about nothing." The judgment holds water only if you believe that life is about nothing. As Nick reflects at one point, "Even in the quietest forms of life the untoward is rarely far from the surface."

And how this volume bears this out!

  2. I usually dislike coming-of-age novels, but based on other reviews I decided to try this. It is not your normal angst ridden type of such. This is humorous. That raises it several notches in my estimation.

If you appreciate British society, you will like this. If not, you probably won't. This isn't an everyman that could be set elsewhere (USA for instance). The very Britishness is what makes it work.

Amazon's description is sufficient to explain where Powell is going with this series. I am looking forward to reading the 2nd Movement.

  3. "A Dance to the Music of Time," an engrossing, highly-literate, highly comic 12-book series by British author Anthony Powell, had to have been one of the highlights of latter 20th century writing to those who appreciate a good, funny book. And it had to have been of riveting interest to some, those who can never get enough of Public Broadcasting Systems' "Masterpiece Theatre/Upstairs Downstairs" entertainments. In fact, it was of riveting interest to me: I remember, in real time, eagerly awaiting the appearance of each next book. I felt more or less like those 19th Century Dickens fans, so eager to learn what had become of Little Nell that they climbed the cliffs of Montauk, New York, to be the first to shout their inquiries to incoming British sailors. So, now that the series is complete, it has been collected into four movements, each including three of the original novels. The first starts with "A Question of Upbringing," "A Buyer's Market," and "The Acceptance World."

If you are reading this review, "A Question of Upbringing" may be as close as you'll ever get to Eton, the legendary English public school - for which, to us, read private school - experience. It is set shortly after World War I. We meet our narrator, Nick Jenkins, and his two closest friends. Peter Templer, already a ladies' man, whose unfortunate incident will hint at much to come. Charles Stringham, already rich and reckless. Then there is the headmaster, LeBas, a great comic creation. Also Kenneth Widmerpool, an even greater, more resonant comic creation, known at school for the wrong sort of overcoat, and his overwhelming desire to succeed. We will continue to meet him in future. We meet Templer's famously rich and beautiful mother, Mrs. Foxe, her latest husband, Buster, a navy man, and see Jenkins' first crush on Jean, Peter's sister. Then we go briefly to France, where Widmerpool pops up again, and onto Oxford and the great world of London.

At Oxford we meet another great comic creation, one of the dons, Sillery, known as Sillers, who's busy giving Sunday afternoon teas, enabling him to keep a finger in every possible pie. We also meet Mark Members and J.G.Quiggin; who, according to Sillers, live quite near each other at home, and are possibly related, and who, like Jenkins our narrator, have literary ambitions.

"A Buyer's Market" takes our characters to London, where those wishing to begin to establish literary careers. We see quite a lot of Deacon, an elderly, homosexual, not so talented artist, and of his tenant, Barnby, a more talented, third generation artist, with an eye for the ladies. And we meet quite a few ladies, several of them beautiful: Gypsy Jones, Baby Wentworth, Bijou Ardglass. Widmerpool pops up again. And, we see more of those famous debutante dances, and the dinners thrown before them, than you're likely to find anywhere else. Finally, we are introduced to one of the abiding passions of the thirties: Communism, in its Stalinist and Trotskyite embodiments.

"The Acceptance World," set as the world approaches the Great Depression, gives us an even larger gallery of entertaining, larger than life characters. Templer and Stringham have married, unsuccessfully, as has Jean Templer: Jenkins will find himself falling in love with her again, as a grown-up this time. We meet Dicky Umfraville, an older man who will take away Stringham's former sister-in-law, Ann Stepney, from Barnby, and marry her himself. Further, Peter Templer's wife Mona, whom we initially met as an artist's model, will suddenly find the literary/political worlds more interesting than that of the just plain rich.

Mind you, Powell is no mere stenographer; he creates the rhythmic beat of "A Dance to the Music of Time," with thought, care, philosophy, perception, irony and wit. If you always wished you could climb into "Masterpiece Theatre" and live there, this series is for you.

  4. "A Dance to the Music of Time" is to Modern British Literature what Ben & Jerry's is to ice cream -- fabulous fare to be savored, appreciated and remembered. If you enjoy Charles Dickens (especially "David Copperfield" and "Great Expectations"), Thomas Hardy ("Return of the Native," "Tess of the D'Urbervilles"), Evelyn Waugh ("Decline and Fall," "A Handful of Dust"),and C.P. Snow ("The Light and The Dark", "The Masters"), you will love Powell's amazing tour de force. And if you enjoy Powell, you will probably also enjoy the Aubrey-Maturin series by Patrick O'Brian! Great writing, memorable characters, convoluted plots -- what more can a reader ask?

  5. Anthony Powell's masterpiece "A Dance to the Music of Time" is essential reading for any lover of literature.

5 comments about Rhinoceros Tap: 15 Seriously Silly Songs (Book & CD).
  1. These children's songs are upbeat and good for play time. The production qualities are high, as usual with Boynton CDs, and much thought went into the selection of the silly lyrics. Maybe not as much fun as Grunt (a bed time favorite at our house), or Philadelphia Chickens, the children have had a lot of fun with moving to this music.

  2. My 3-year-old daughter LOVES this book & CD. She's always been a Boynton book fan and she would have this CD on 24/7 if we'd let her. And we almost do. Like all truly good children's works, it appeals on a basic level to the kids with the pictures of the cute animals and the silly situations, but it also has just enough under-the-radar puns and allusions that adults won't go stark raving mad on repeat #118. The music is really well written and perfectly satirizes the various genres it shoots for. Adam Byant's vocals are fun and camp. Nice job to the whole crew who put it together! Next birthday will be Philadelphia Chickens.

  3. Rhinoceros Taps what can I say my daughter loves it and so do I! THe lyrics are witty and the tunes have lots of spunk! My husband, daugther and I have all the lyrics memorized! In fact, I send this gift to all my friends as a welcome gift for a new baby!

  4. My daughters, 4 and 6, love this cd. My 4 year old is not big on reading despite out efforts! I love products like this that incorporate flipping through a book with audio to keep her engaged. YAY!!!

  5. We have two Autistic grandsons, 2.5 years and 5.5 years old. They love this book and music so much we had to buy a second copy so they would not fight over the book. The older boy likes to follow the lyrics in the book while the CD is playing and has memorized many of the songs. The younger one likes the pictures.

The CD is especially helpful in the car. We get stuck in traffic driving from daycare to therapy and the trip sometimes takes an hour. The CD smoothes everything out for the boys.

And, we, the grandparents, like the music so well that we sing along.

We have bought two other music books by Boynton and Ford. We like them but "Tap" is still the winner!

  1. im dj since 1990 and never see one book complete with this!!!!

    best seller!!!

    tks (sorry for me english)

  2. This book is really quite a treasure. I highly recommend everyone interested in dance music production, or really electronic music in general get this book. For me, it seems like the thing i have been looking for on the internet for all this time. This book quickly jump starts you through the most basic knowledge if you happen to be a beginner, then it just blasts off into a comprehensive coverage of just about everything you might ever want to know. It tells you in depth about every effect, and guides you step by step on how to produce several variety's of the most popular dance sounds. One of the most impressive parts is that it contains about 100 pages about how to make the most prominent dance genres.

Overall the book is very comprehensive and written at the level of a college textbook. The theme of the book is generally, music theory and music production all in the light of dance music. Every other theory/songwriting book doesn't help you too much when you're trying to create dance music, and thats about all there is. this book is the only one ive covered which covers the electronica side of things. Amazing book.

  3. This book has been more help than any other book that I have read on making electronic music!!!!! I recommend this as a must have for anyone starting out to seasoned vets of electronic music!!!!!!!

  4. Excellent book. Easy to read, and extensive to say the least.

Some things that disappointed me though (and they are minor): The examples of drum rhythms, bass lines, and basically constructing a track are brief.

Another thing I was disappointed with was that almost a quarter of the book was devoted to HTML and making an audio website. That was upsetting because I don't care to make websites. I care to make MUSIC!

I was also disappointed that the book picked a few sub-sub-genres to work composition/production examples from. I would have preferred the book focused more on how to make something that gets people onto the floor and DANCE.

I can see though, that without much knowledge at all about dance music production, this is a fantastic starting point and would get a reader up to speed to read the more in depth books on audio production specifics such as synth programming, drum programming, and software/hardware specific manuals.

I thoroughly recommend this book to anyone who is a dance music hobbyist or just starting out with the dream of getting hearing your name backannounced on the radio when you drive home from work.... "Yep, that's my track."

Buy this book and the dream will be a LOT closer.

  5. I've been working on breakbeat & trance for two years now after doing pop and rock for years in my 20s. I thought I knew quite a bit about electronica, but my 'knowledge' has always been like a mist in my head...there was always something wrong in either my tunes or the process.

I've heard so many good things about this book...to the extent that I thought it was all hype. Weeks ago I finally decided to give it a go. And wow...now the loose ends are really coming together. The author really understands and speaks from a producer point of view, in the case of dance music production, the producer needs to take control of the whole picture and therefore his way of integrating all aspects is nothing short of a great revelation.

I was gonna wait for the new edition, but decided to give this one a read first. And I'm glad I did. I wish I had this book years ago!

THere's a reviewer saying that this book is 'basic': well, it certainly isn't for "advanced electronica producers"---because these advanced dudes are most likely working on inspirations that hace to be felt and worked, rather than essential skills this book provides. Really...if you're so advanced, why are you still looking for a 'manual'?

If you do dance music, I whole heartedly recommend that you get a copy of this book.

5 comments about There's Money Where Your Mouth Is: An Insider's Guide to a Career in Voice-Overs.
  1. This book is very helpful for those new to the industry. It contains information about putting your demo together, about getting an agent, and has sample copy to practice with, and tips for exercising your voice. I definitely reccomend this for anyone who is interested in trying this line of work for the first time.

  2. If you are at all interested in VO, get this book. I read it cover to cover a year ago, and I've been cherry picking those areas that I've needed to focus on ever since. Now that I've marked up my copy at least three times and pages are starting to break loose of their binding, I'm ready to get an agent and start working. If your an actor or improvisor this book will help all areas of your artistic endeavors. The nuances & subtleties of speech are examined in great detail. The bottom line throughout this book is how to stop "acting" and be real. The market is hungry for every day real people. There's a pot of gold at the end of this rainbow, pick it up.

  3. Elaine Clark is my guru. I have read this book a number of times since purchasing it in 2001, and I return to a number of specific passages when I need a refresher. Having worked steadily in this business for 20+ years, and having purchased many books on voice acting, I 've found "There's Money Where Your Mouth Is" to be my absolute favorite. The reader is taken from the basics to the multitude of details involved in running your own successful voice-over business.
Thanks to Elaine Clark, I have grown professionally as a voice actor, and enhanced my voice acting and copy interpretation skills.

  4. I'm at the beginning of my career in voice-over and I've read a good handful of books on the topic and taken tons of classes...but rarely has anyone "broken down" the essentials of technique quite as clearly and succinctly as Elaine Clark does in this book. For the first time, I felt like I had some practical tools I could refer to when approaching copy, which not only gave me a promising ground to start from, but also helped build my confidence and desire to "stick-to-it." Rather than give you hollow, abstract phrases about the need to connect emotionally to the copy, she shows you "how" to make it "yours." Obviously she's a great teacher with a lot of experience, as she leaves no stone unturned in this book with regards to what to expect in every aspect of this career and how to be best prepared so that you can succeed.

  5. I have a number of Voice over books, and this one is hands down my favorite. Even though I've worked in the voice industry for years, there are so many proven voice techniques in this book that I keep it handy in my studio. I strongly recommend it to beginning students as well as veterans.

My favorite aspects of this book are:

    - outstanding presentation of the fundamentals of voice over. When you read each technique, it's absolutely clear how to use it AND how it improves the result.
    - great advice for revising my demos (or creating them if you don't have one)
    - interviews with copy writers and agents, to give a real-world view of the industry

I've seen proven results in my own work, and I highly recommend this book to anyone serious about a career in voice over.

  1. The photography is superb, the layout is fantastic, the concept of two books in one is wonderfully unique. Buy this one in hardcover before it's gone and you're forced to buy a cheapy paperback later - an outstanding book and magnificently produced.

  2. This is a great book. The pictures are beautiful and the reading is quite entertaining.

  3. As usual, the elegant and enchanting Dita Von Teese manages to dazzle the senses and delight the eyes. Not only is the book a burlesque fan's dream, with page after page of gorgeous Dita playing dress-up, but she also manages to fill it with nuggets of history and how-to. The fetish side is equally satisfying, and a must for any fan of S&M. The dichotomy of the book, one side she's a sweet, sex kitten and the other, a smoldering, spanking temptress, showcases Dita's dual nature. I LOVE THIS BOOK!

  4. I loved this! Dita Von Teese is beautiful, and she is very knowledgeable in her field. The pictures are sassy and lavish and the writing is confident and glamorous! It was very well put-together. It is so seductive and sexy without being garish.

    Highly recommended.

  1. I was curious about making the soldered pendant shown in this book and this book did not disappoint my expectations - just detailed enough, plenty of great pictures, and thorough in its instructions, leaving me with the feeling that I can definitely make these pendants to go with the beaded jewelry I make. I highly recommend this book.

  2. I WAS NERVOUS ABOUT TRYING TO SOLDER, BUT AFTER READING THIS BOOK I THINK I CAN HANDLE IT. EASY TO FOLLOW INSTRUCTIONS AND GREAT IDEAS!

  3. I have purchased five books on soldered jewelry. I continue to return time and time again to this book! The instructions are crystal clear and easy to follow. Soldering can be intimidating...not here. You will be ready to go to the iron and get started after just one pass through this book! I just can't say enough about it. THIS IS THE ONE.

  4. Highly recommended for those new to soldered jewelry making. The author clearly outlines a list of necessary tools and provides simply and easy to understand instructions for completing each of the projects listed in the book. I have purchased several hundred dollars worth of books on soldered jewelry making and this book is by far the best one to date. Instructions are clear, accurate and easy to follow. Projects are attractive, modern, and marketable in today's venues. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

  5. This book is by far the best if you want to learn how to solder jewelry pieces. I loved the way it is written, easy to understand, and the projects are a blast to learn, with wonderful color photos throughout the book. I highly recommend it for your craft library.

5 comments about The Knot Guide to Wedding Vows and Traditions: Readings, Rituals, Music, Dances, and Toasts.
  1. This book is full of your typical wedding songs and poems, but there are also a good selection of modern/non-traditional ideas. The examples of vows and rituals were a nice inclusion for those wanting a starting point for creating their own unique wedding activities.

  2. I found this book a little dissapointing. Not much to it. It's not all inclusive like it would lead you to believe. I was looking to design a wedding ceremony. Instead of focusing in depth on one topic it has a more broad overview of every topic. I would of preferred more options and explanations

  3. After looking through what felt like hundreds of wedding planning books and magazines and always seeing the same ideas over and over again I finally stumbled across this particular book. It was just what I needed as my husband and I both have busy work/travel schedules and we only had two months to plan our Christmas wedding. This book really became an invaluable resource for planning the ceremony that we wanted. The book contains hundreds of quotes from a variety of both religious and secular/literary sources, along with sample programs, hundreds of song lists, and explanations of different cultural wedding traditions. With our limited time, this book became our single most used reference and helped us create the unique and personal wedding that we both wanted.

  4. This book was only somewhat helpful to me. It needs to be updated to current times. I was looking for ideas for a contemporary wedding and this book has more traditional and religious ideas plus I was expecting to see more in the book, there was not enough information.

  5. If you are looking for something besides the ordinary, this is a great book, with fabulous ideas. We had truly unique vows at our wedding, that were meaningful to us. And we got them out of this book.

  1. I really wanted this book. But I did not want to pay the big bucks. So I was so glad that I got an e mail when it was at a lower price.

    Thank you

  2. My 11 year old daughter saw Wicked in December 2007, and was immediately hooked! Soon after she saw the show, she found this book in our local chain bookstore, but decided not to buy it when she saw how much of her Christmas money she would have to spend. So, she patiently waited, until one day she saw it on Amazon for 1/3 less (plus free shipping). She bought it immediately, and has looked at it dozens of times since she got it. **I've looked at it a couple of times myself...** ;-)

  3. Wicked, the "true" story of the witches of OZ! What a wonderful concept and the play is so marvelous in making the story so believable. The book helps you see the underlying story in the Frank Baum, Wizard of OZ. If you haven't seen the play, the book will intrigue you enough to want to see it, again and again. If you have seen the play, then this book is a wonderful companion. While it has the usual pictures and glossy prints, it also has the script which is superb. The ending is missing from the script, so the play is a must see!!!

  4. I am a huge fan of Wicked who lives in Oz(Australia). I brought the Grimmerie and it arrived almost 3 weeks early which I was very happy with. I love it and it shows a lot of great information about the cast, crew and making of Wicked. I like some of the other reviewers wish that some of the later cast members were included but it was still a great buy and I'm looking forward to seeing the production in Melbourne and getting my grimmerie signed by the cast.

  5. Exquisite book! Quality thick pages and glossy finish. The cover is padded and antiqued. The Grimmerie details many aspects of production from casting to sound effects, with individual interviews with principles describing their character development and Wicked journeys. There is even a section on making Elphaba green!!

Although titled The Grimmerie they leave out Elphaba's spells and the script is incomplete which is disappointing. Aside from this, however, the book is fantastic and a MUST READ for any Wicked fanatic!
