5 comments about Big Book of Christmas Songs for Clarinet (Big Book of Christmas Songs).
  1. This is the must have music for the holidays! It contains the sheet music for both Christian carols and popular holiday. Something for everyone! I recommend this book to all musicians regardless of level of play. This is a true treasure trove of holiday music!

  2. Excellent transaction. The book was in excellent condition. I am a beginner trumpet player and the book was easy enough for me to play many of the christmas songs, over the holidays. If you are an accomplished trumpet player, this book is probably too easy for you. In addition, the book has a wonderful assortment of Christmas songs. Probably has the largest selection of Christmas songs for the price.

  3. This is a great book for christmas music and it is very good to learn clarinet.
I am very happy with it.

  4. I am interested in a book of Christmas songs for cello, and one comes up in the search, but the book shown, the book reviewed, and the book that comes up for purchase is for Piano/Guitar/Vocal.

How do I learn about the Cello version?

  5. I think this is a great book of the collected Christmas songs. I have the version for viola, it doesn't have any lyrics. I try to remember the words as I play, but I'll have to get another source just for the lyrics and write them into this book. I'm not home while writing this, but I thought I'd seen Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer and Frosty the Snowman, but certainly not The Little Drummer Boy. There are 2 versions of Away in the Manger and something else, I believe.

  1. Anyone who is interested in clarinet may benefit from this book, but the author does not attempt to speak to beginning students.

For instance, the book begins with chapters on the history and acoustic principles of the clarinet. These will interest seasoned players, but beginners may wish to skip these early chapters. Photographs of early clarinet construction will probably interest everyone, though.

Excellent chapter on teaching clarinet gives well-reasoned opinions on the sequence in which various skills should be introduced.

Very good listing of the concert and solo clarinet repertoire. Dated discography, but many of the LPs listed are likely to be available as CDs by now, so it still serves to point to good performances.

The book's most positive feature is the author's emphasis upon the process of discovery - that is, learning how to interact with one's instrument and keeping track of both successful and failed techniques. It helps to remember that the clarinet's intonation is a compromise, and that progress is dependent upon the player's sensitivity to the pecularities of the instrument.

The principal shortcoming of the book is its very passive voice; it was a tiring read. The author doesn't always state his conclusions directly, and attempting to trace antecedents often was frustrating. It is worthwhile, but (unless the reader already is comfortable with such a style) be prepared to make an above-average effort as you read this book.

  2. I first read this book when I was about 12 years old (just a few years after it was first published). Call me precocious, but I was able to follow it then, as a beginning clarinetist, even though some of the technical matters described were beyond my abilities at the time. One need only pick up books by Wm. Stubbins or O. Lee Gibson (both brilliant clarinetists and teachers, by the way) to appreciate how conversationally and easily Mr. Brymer explained highly technical matters in this book.

Now, as an experienced clarinetist and private instructor, I find myself recalling concepts that Mr. Brymer taught in this book every time I teach lessons (or pick up the horn). I feel this book was a lot of what transformed my interest in the clarinet from "something to get me out of P.E" to something that I sought to excel in.

  3. This is not a book for beginners. If you are just starting to learn the clarinet, you'll be better off with something on the fundamentals, say the book by Keith Stein. But once you are able to play in a band or ensemble, you owe it to yourself to learn a little more about the clarinet. And this book is very valuable for doing just that.

The best part is the chapter on clarinet acoustics. I loved the parts about fingering, tone hole size, and differences between the B-flat and A clarinets. But the entire book is instructive and a pleasure to read.

2 comments about The Jazz Method for Clarinet (Tutor Book & CD).
  1. A great method to learn without a teacher! :) I've seen many other methods, but this one, in my opinion, is the one who teach you playing clarinet in the best way!! And with many many jazz tunes!!!! ;-) (instead of childish songs, as I've seen in other methods!)

At the beginning the tunes are simple ones composed by the author; then, progressing, they are original tunes by Thelonius Monk, Count Basie, C.Parker and many others!!! :-)

All the tunes are recorded on the CD.

There is also a very good bibliography and discography!! :-)

    Really a great method!! ;-D

  2. For some reason Amazon treats all books in this series as if they were the same regardless of whether they are for sax, trumpet, clarinet, flute, etc.

To avoid confusion, let me say that this review is for the trumpet version of the book. But even if you are interested for one of the other books in the series I hope that this review will at least give you some flavour of the way the series have been designed. I expect that the overall concept is the same.

This is actually the first trumpet book I bought at the time I started playing trumpet close to three years ago and it seemed tailor-made for me as an adult learner with a great love of jazz. Now I'm playing trumpet in a jazz quintet so I am definitely doing something right and I really think this book was a significant help.

I have never seen another book that covers so much ground nor one that has such interesting material for the beginner. You won't find any childish nursery rhymes or 18th century folk songs here!

It really does start from the absolute beginner level, even to the point of telling you how to hold the trumpet and get your first sounds. At the same time, from the very first tune you are playing jazz. Most of the earlier pieces were written by the authors, but the later tunes are mainly by jazz greats, and usually trumpet players. You'll find tunes from great jazz trumpeters like Miles Davis, Dizzy Gillespie, Kenny Dorham, Woody Shaw, Freddie Hubbard, Kenny Wheeler etc.

There are also some tunes from other jazz instrumentalists but the trumpeters are the clear majority in this edition (presumably the incarnations of this book made for other instruments mainly contain tunes relevant to their instrument).

As the book progresses you will gradually add notes to your range, learn about jazz articulation, how to use mutes, useful jazz theory, improvisation, biographical information about jazz trumpeters, pedal tones (that's notes below the conventional range), high range playing (that's notes above high C), alternate fingerings and more.

I think that even a reasonably advanced player could benefit from some of the later sections. There is also a nice CD with the book which demonstrates how all the songs should sound and has a split track so you can play along with the rhythm section.

Of course it's not the only book you will ever need, however this book is a fine place to start and it contains references to many of the other books (and recordings) you may want as you progress.

  1. This is a beginner's book that really starts with the basics, like assembling the parts of your instrument and the basic finger positions and notes. There are complete finger charts in the back. Just what we were looking for so our child can get a little fun summer experience before starting in band come September!

2 comments about Star Wars Episodes I, II & III Instrumental Solos Book & CD (Clarinet Edition).
  1. This book is pretty easy. It's good for beginner cellists. Two of the songs I wasn't familiar with but overall this is fun music to play especially if you like Star Wars!

  2. This sheet music book contains Star Wars music scores, written in arrangements that are not too hard for advanced beginner students. The CD it comes with is great. My son has been listening to it non stop and although he has not mastered the music himself, he's becoming familiar with it every day. Great Buy.
