2 comments about Brass Instruments: Their History and Development.
- When I ordered this book I was expecting something that closely followed the form Baines had used in his Woodwind Instruments and Their History. This was not to be the case. Instead, it is a detailed history of the brass family from prehistoric time to the modern valved era. This is not quite as exhaustive of a book as I was looking for (something that dealt with modern valved brass). With all that said it is still a marvelous book and full of usefull information.
- Every field has its classic work, and this is it for brass instruments. Not definitive, because nothing could be, but the linch-pin of the library as far as brasswind instruments go.

3 comments about Trumpet Kings: The Players Who Shaped the Sound of Jazz Trumpet.
- Fans of jazz music in general and the trumpet in particular will appreciate this survey of the great jazz trumpeters from Dizzy Gillespie and Miles Davis to lesser-known players. The profiles read like fiction, providing dramatic biographical coverage of each player's life and musical abilities. An A-Z reference type approach makes this easy to quickly access.
- Great Book! All the greatest players are included, with a selection of their most important CDs.
- I have to admit, I buy Scott Yanow's books because I need a laugh once in a while and cannot believe the BS this author writes who knows nothing about playing Swing, Latin, Jazz, Be Bop, you get my point. Buy a book regarding music that is written by a real professional full time musician. This will give you the real meat of what great music is all about. First off, you have to be kidding. I started to read this book and It was like researching bacteria at the local library. But it is funny like his other books.
Obviously, this author has collected his information at his local county library, you know the ones that have about 500 books total in their building? What does he really know about Afro Cuban Latin or music in general and playing it on a real stage for a full time living? Nothing, according to this book. Also, have you ever heard Scott Yanow play music? Whew.............................. I've heard better one string banjo players. But that's my own opinion.
First came the Birth of the artist. Then came the Afterbirth of the Critic. In our opinion, Scott Yanow cannot not play his instrument well enough to make a full time living at music, so he went to college. He read a lot of books and became a critic and a so called author. In our opinion, Scott Yanow has NO creditability writing books or reviews regarding any style of music. Read his books and make up your own minds. Someone famous once said: "Those who do, do. Those who can't become critics". Could this is the case of Scott Yanow?

1 comments about Studies in Legato for Trombone.
- Fink's Studies in Legato is a must-have for every aspiring trombonist. It's a well chosen selection of various etudes by such luminaries as Panofka and Concone, with guidance from Dr Fink on how the pieces should be played. The reward for careful practice is a sense of satisfaction on hearing yourself play these delightful pieces over and over.

4 comments about Bird: The Legend of Charlie Parker (Da Capo Paperback).
- this book was about an epic struggle of a jazz musician in a New York city life.Im 16 and i play a lot of jazz and parker was a geat influence on me and my playin i worship him as a mucican and a jazz ico
- This book shows the life of Parker through the eyes of many of his collegues, friends, and family. Robert Riesner should be commmended for his work on this material because it's informitive and gives views of Parker through people that were in his life. This book is a must read for all "true" Bird fans.
- This book is less acclaimed than Ross Russell's book, but is far better than the latter. Reisner knew Bird well and he interviewed most of his associates. It's Bird in the words of those who knew him. A great piece of work!
- This is the only book that I have read about Parker. So I can't compare it to other works. BUT it is a very enjoyable read. As the cover states there are extensive interviews with people who knew him best, including various ex-wives. Various incidents that are in the movie are described here, so I assume Eastwood, or whoever wrote the script, probably consulted this book. But, what is interesting is that the Book states that Chan and 'Bird' were never legally married. Don't think that fact was in the Movie.

1 comments about Collected Thoughts on Teaching and Learning, Creativity and Horn Performance.
- Douglas Hill is one of my mentors--a great player, a master teacher, a kind person, and a strong analytical mind. He is a terrific diagnostician and a healer of horn problems, and I have grown by both his example and his teaching. In this book, he shares his thoughts about several different subjects relating to playing the horn, and gives the possibility of moving through those nasty "stuck" places in one's technique. Unfortunately, the student who borrowed my copy has not returned it (and I can't remember who has it), so I am ordering another.

2 comments about Real World Horn Playing.
- I am working now for two years with this book (previous edition) and must say it served me well. Also the author himself is available for (virtual) help if needed. The book tells many things not mentioned in the Farkas Horn "Bible" or at least not that deeply. I would recommend it specially to any auto didact (like I am) because the practice exercices are really well explained. So I noted that a Kopprasch does nothing to me because I have no one teaching me what I have to do / work on this etudes. But in Rider's Book I have the explication what and how precisely I have to do with the exercices; but they are exercices, not etudes. All I need besides working on my ensemble pieces. By the way, it also serves as introduction for the very beginner.
- I received my copy of "Real World Horn Playing" a few weeks ago and already I am enjoying benefits from it. There are tips & valuable information on nearly every page that have made REAL improvements in my playing. And, a special bonus is that the material is presented in a unique and fresh style with good humor & clarity.
I'm particularly pleased with Mr. Rider's warm up instructions & routine. I learned in the warm up section exactly WHY I often have stiff lips, resistent to free vibration & exactly HOW to remedy the problem. (It works!) This book would be worth triple the price even if it contained nothing more than his warm up instructions & routine! (Especially when you factor in the price of private instruction!) I believe Mr. Rider's warm up instructions & routine would help ALL brass players, not just horn players.
At first glance, the exercises looked like pretty routine stuff. (Oh boy, more lips slurs!) It wasn't until after I read the text & began practicing the exercises in the exact manner Mr. Rider describes that I understood & experienced benefits in my tone, flexibility & musical phrasing. It's the HOW TO that makes the difference.
Mr. Rider's book is a valuable resource to support & supplement the excellent private instruction I receive. Some of the material found in this book are lessons my private instructor has tried to pound into my thick skull, but I just didn't "get" until I read it in his book. But much of the material is innovative and new to me. I recommend this book to all brass students & teachers alike.

1 comments about 158 Saxophone Exercises/50332850.
- If you are looking for a book that just contains pages of notes, this is probably the book for you. There is virtually no writing or explanation of what's going on in the patterns. Articulation and rhythm is up to you to make up for each series of exercises. Good for ear training, intonation, technique etc. Exercises focus on a diminished sound.
