  1. This is a fantastic book. Simple yet comprehensive in it's method. Walking Bass Lines is an excellent addition to any guitarist's development as a musician. Knowing how to play a walking bass line while playing chords is a skill that will reap many rewards for the serious guitar player.

  2. ONE OF THE BEST BOOK I OWN. THE CD IS A GREAT ADDITION. EASY TO UNDERSTAND WITH FUN MATERIAL.

  3. This is a great book. I would recomend it to anyone who is looking to learn some real jazz. It moves at a good pace and with the cd accompanyment you are able work through all the pieces and examples that might give you any trouble. It has a really good step by step approach and also gives you the opportunity try out the methods with your own progressions. I highly recomend this book to anyone trying to expand their playing.

  4. I was really looking forward to receiving that book, because walking bass lines are such an essential part of jazz guitar comping and reviews for this book were promising.. so i expected more of this book. it really only involves some basic concepts, such as chromatic approach to roots and some very basic introduction to using chord tones and modes and substitutions. the material could fit in 1-2 pages, no need for a whole book.
I was actually expecting some real lines... and some more advanced/interesting/varied voicings. that book really doesn't go that far if you want to play some cool walking bass.. in my opinion, that is.
But still, that book will get you started and it is a real good book just for that.

  2. This book is better than most because it starts simply and gradually expands the concept of Walking Bass. Harmonically it is excellent but is let down buy lack of rhyhmic ideas (ie none).A Glossary of rhythmic patterns/ideas at the end would have been nice. And why do writers insist on TAB when
    1. Doublebass doesn't have frets and
    2. What happened to learning to read.
Instead of TAB I would prefer suggested fingering for the musical phrases (bass lines). This would often help when transposing key too.

  3. The cd is very nice, well recorded, bass on left.

The methods I've used and some others i've heard and wondered about are clearly explained here with examples.

Recording is with acoustic upright bass, great sound.

Tabs help to get fingering and double check where I am before my reading catches up with my intentions to play better. ;)

Insane value, this kind of material easily is worth 3 times as much.

I can apply these techniques of leading, chromatics, and the exapmles of the combinations of these and other approaches without knowing how to read since i'm good at patterns, so this is very valuable to me.

  1. i think this is the best book in the world, i didn't buy it, but one of my dad's friends gave it to me. I'm such a fan of GNR, it is not even funny, so i realy enjoyed the book, i can't single out any spot that i like the most, beacause all of it is great

  2. i thought ''Appetite for Destruction : Bass Guitar'' was reallya great transcription for bass guitar of a great album. i has musicand tab for all the songs. my favorite song is "Sweet Child of Mine" the bass line is modereratly easy and fun to play. i gave it a 5 because it is well written and easy to figure out

  3. In Appetite for Destruction, Gene writes about how guns and roses emerged from an LA club that legends Van Halen, Motely Cure and poison, also emerged from. Gene gives an excellent point of view of how hard they had it when they first started. He continues to write about how even know they had numerous albums and concerts, the luck for the band, just kept on getting worse. From someone's head getting stumped in ar a mush pit at one of their concerts, to alcohol and drug overdoses.
It talks of how slash tried to over came his drug problems and how Axel had a huge control issue over the band. This band was created of friendship and ruined by greed, corruption, drugs and alcohol. It even tells you secrets of songs and stories of them. I would give it 5 stars.

  4. All the songs from Appetite for Destruction, with detailed transcriptions, song notes and an introduction at the face of the book, lyrics, and more! I also bought THE STYLES AND TECHNIQUES OF SLASH, which was a breakdown of some of the songs from Appetite with a bonus CD. Both are recommendable but this is definitely more straightforward. If you want to learn Gn'R, start there. If you're already good at guitar, get this book. It's hard, and takes practice, but the songs are ALL great. Even Think About You is fun to play, and it's my least favorite song on Appetite.

  5. This truely is a great bass tab book for a great album! Beginners to experienced players could do alot worse than learn from the basslines Duff McKagan plays on Appetite!

    Buy this book!

  1. From Monk Montgomery to Billy Sheehan, this book presents most of the influential electric bassists in jazz, rock, and studio work. In a series of interviews or profiles, you get a good picture of the influences that went into their styles, their working habits, as well as some of the technical information about their gear. Highly recommended for learning about the people behind the bass lines you've heard over the last 30 years.

  2. A collection of 30 separate articles, each about a big name in the bass world. The names span lots of styles too. And whatever your style, I think the whole book is worth reading, because I even picked up some good ideas from players or genres that I wasn't particularly into. Some of the articles focused more on the artists's equipment, for some it was their band history, others it was more focused on their style. This is actually why I didn't give it a full 5 stars. The Chris Squire article, for example, is just him explaining what equipment he uses, and as much as I'm interested in what other players are using to get their sounds, I would also like to have gotten a few playing tips from Squire. Still, it's a great "encylopedia" of sorts for any bass player, and I believe that any player who reads the articles will learn something helpful.

  3. This is a great book to keep on your coffee table! It reminded me of all the music I need to buy - by these great bassists.

  1. Both of these books by Roger Filiberto are terrible. The exercizes consist of nothing but variations of the same exercize you learn in the beginning of the book. Everything about the book screams "outdated." Good for learning the basics of sight reading and nothing else. This is a book for extreme beginners, particularly people who don't even know what a bass guitar is.

  2. The word that one of my new students used was "CHEESY"
It is by far the most uninteresting and uninspiring teaching material for bass EVER

  3. The beauty of the original Mel Bay book catalog, this book included, is that learning from them without an instructor is like deciphering secret code. The books contain excellent information, but first you must figure out how to understand what they say. I own many Mel Bay titles, and I can honestly say that anything from 1970 or earlier should not be used by a beginner without an instructor to help you understand them. If you're like me though, you'll embrace the challenge and learn about the magic they contain without using an instructor. This is an excellent book for that type adventure!

As for the other reviewers who believe this title to be truly awful, I ask them to give this title another chance. If it seems "cheesy" or "repetitious", try to read more into what is being taught. I think you'll be pleasantly suprised. These books haven't been recommended by music instructors for all these years for nothing. For those who may not comfortable with just learning from the book itself, Mel Bay offers vol.1 and vol. 2 together in another title called, "Complete Electric Bass Method". This "Complete" version includes a CD and DVD which will allow someone to learn from the book along with an audio and visual teaching aid.

    Good luck with your studies.

  4. I'm just learning to play bass guitar,I have both this book and Bass guitar for Dummies. I find this book more methodical, it teaches you to read and play the notes one string at a time. It reads like a text book you would get in a music class, but those type of books are the best to learn by. By the end of studying this book you will be able to learn the notes, how to play those notes and you'll learn how to read sheet music. Playing actual songs will be a reality when you finish studying this book. There is also a second volume that will teach you arpeggios and chords to round out your bass apprenticeship. I found it a better learning tool than Bass guitar For Dummies which is more for Experienced beginners to intermediate players

  5. My music instructor assign home study using this book, great tool for studing and practicing skills.

4 comments about Primus Anthology - A thru N: for Guitar and Bass.
  1. This book is a much needed explination of the insanity of Les Claypool's bass style. His slap bass style with bits of tapping, usually on a 5 string bass, occasionally fretless. I have been trying for years to decifer les's music, and now it's finally possible. worth every penny and every second of practice. This is perfect for any primus fan who is instrumental, but be warned, Les' music "is!" as hard to play as it sounds. Have fun.

  2. Cherry Lane has now released transcriptions of the "Progressive Freak-Out Music" band Primus, divided alphabetically by song title into two volumes. (For those who didn't know, Cherry Lane published many other transcription books and instructional videos during the late 80's shred-guitar era.) Each song transcription includes the guitar lines and bass parts in both standard notation and tablature, as well as the lyrics and vocal melody. A time line of the band's history is included each book. Everything, note-for-note, is taken straight from the original albums. Though being a bass player, I mainly bought these books for the bass parts.

I was very, very pleased to see them feature many songs from the first two albums. Songs like "John The Fisherman", "Jerry Was A Race Car Driver", and "Tommy The Cat" were the ones that introduced me to Primus, and really intrigued me to sit down and learn how to play Claypool's parts. Though maybe some of the newer fans will be disappointed that the books do not include the South Park theme, or songs from the last couple of albums. Nevertheless, the thumb-slapping technique became extremely popular again for bassists around the early 90s, and Les Claypool (along with Flea, Robert Trujilio, etc.) had a lot to do with that. This brings me to the title of this review: why the heck they didn't print a Primus bass transcription book back then, when such a thing would be in its highest demand?

Les also used a variety of basses, including a 4-string with a whammy bar, 6-string basses, uprights, and fretlesses. He also used a variety of techniques other than slapping, such as left and right hand tapping, strumming, and three finger picking. But all the transcriptions seemed to have been faithfully done. (Though I did find tablature to be an odd inclusion for songs like Mr. Krinkle, which features a bowed upright bass! Where is this "third fret" he's supposedly hitting?) The only other thing I find odd is the lack of drum transcriptions. I like Larry Lalonde's guitar style, but let's face it: Primus is mostly known amongst musicians as a "bassist's and drummer's" band. Though maybe drummers aren't that big into transcriptions; I don't know.

I buy transcription books very rarely, but this is one that I've really been waiting for. That's probably what pushes me to give it 5 stars instead of 4. Sitting down with these books and my bass has been fun, a bit nostalgic, and challenging.

  3. like i stated for the other product directly related with this one. my skill has doubled in a matter of weeks

  4. Tabs are very close to the actual way that Les Claypool plays his songs. Notations are a little difficult to remember, but they are the same throughout both anthologies and Sailing the Seas of Chesse (play it like it is) tab books so it isn't impossible to learn them quickly. Also be aware that a lot of the songs are played using a 6string bass (like old Les) and makes it difficult to get all of your money's worth out of it without first owning a 6string. Overall a great buy!

  2. this is a very good tab book. I love primus and that is probley why. You get 9 tabs or songs in one book. The songs are al popular primus songs. The thing to look at is if you are looking for a tab that you want to play it might not be the correct insterment. For example if your looking for a 4 string version of tommy the cat you wont find it here. Or if there is a banjo it will be a banjo not normal guitar. Overall this is a pretty good tab book. Make sure you like the songs on it before you buy it because this is the O-Z tab of primus and the other book is A-N.

  3. this sheet music just opened my eyes to how les claypool plays his songs. my skill has literally improved twice as much in a few weeks time.

  1. Assuming that the reader followed the lessons of book #1, Mel Bay's Bass #2 continues to guide beginners through formulating basic riffs to accompany guitarists. Echoing the rockabilly style of his time, Bay provides scale patterns as well as simple, but fun, walking lines (without tab). If a beginner is looking for a throroughly educating book, this is the one!

2 comments about Mel Bay's Deluxe Jazz & Rock Bass Method.
  1. I've read and owned lots of bass guitar books, but this is the one book that seems to cover everything. Starting with the most basic introductory material such as "how to hold the bass guitar", the book advances all the way down to things like "Lydian Augmented scales in the 12th position". Besides the expected subjects (scales, modes, progressions, intervals, key signatures, etc.) there are even lessons on bass duets and general subjects like relative pitch training for your ears. The book indirectly teaches better sheet music reading by cleverly making each successive exercise more rhythmically complex as the book goes on. Of course, when you cram so much information into a single book, the material inevitably moves a bit fast (otherwise, you'd have to write the book twice as long). So my only complaint is that it's not very user-friendly as a beginner's total self-instruction book. And I know there are many who don't particulary like the typical Mel Bay methods of instruction. Still, the book is perfect if you have an instructor helping you along, or you're a moderate or advanced player who just wants to review certain sections and maybe pick up something new. I've been playing bass for over a dozen years, but I still like to occasionally review sections and play some of the exercises for practice. Despite its fast pace, the incredible span of information in this single book makes me give it 5 stars. If you had to buy just one bass book to last your whole lifetime, I recommend this one without a doubt.

  2. I've been playing for just over 20 years now. When I was young, about 14, I found this book in a small music store. I bought it because it was the thickest bass book on the rack.

I never regretted it, ever. It taught me to read music and taught me the correct ways to handle the bass, and gave me a good, solid understanding of the basics of music theory as it relates to bass.

I have recommended this book to many other players and I would never hesitate to recommend it to the masses here.

Hands down, this is the single best book I have ever seen on electric bass instruction.
