5 comments about Porter-Cable 7800 4.7 Amp Drywall Sander with 13-Foot Hose.
- It does do a great job on floors. I know it isn't a floor sander, but I was helping my brother in law work on an addition at their house, and needed to level out some tongue and groove pine flooring. I had the drywall sander with me; it was Sunday, and the rental places were closed, so I decided to give it a try. The drywall sander with it's gimballed floating head let me do it in short order. Actually it took a few hours to work my way through the grits from 80 to 220, but when I was done, we just vacuumed and sealed the floor.
Basically if you have a wide flat surface you need to smooth up the PC 7800 will do a good job. (I have also used it to sand several layers of paint off old doors.) Be sure to get drywall filter bags for your shop vacuume, they catch almost all of the dust.
- This product does exactly what it says it will, and does it extremely well. This is a powerful sander which produces very little dust.
However, after two days of experimentation, I could not control the device to the point that I wasn't dinging, gouging, and scraping too much mud (or the paper) off the drywall. This thing cost me way more time than it saved me. If I were a professional I might consider investing in this, as then I might be able to figure out how to use it effectively. As a do-it-yourselfer I have been having far better results and just as little dust with hand tools. The Hyde Dust Dog Pole Sander Kit for Dustless Drywall Sanding and the Marshalltown DuraSoft® Dustless Drywall Vacuum Sander cost far, far less and give more predictable results. Yes, it takes a little more elbow grease, but it gives far better results and ends up taking a heck of a lot less time than going back and fixing the scrapes again and again.
- while this product looks like the cats meow it is more like the cats litter box. After 30 minutes of use the motor stopped working completely. Controlling the product even with the 150 grit porter cable sanding disks is not at all easy. The dust collection control ring brush is way too long. you have to press fairly hard to get the sanding disk to even engage the wall. then with this much preasure it is hard to contol. You have to be very carefull at this point not to exert even the sligthtest amount of excess preassure or else you can hear the motor start to load down. Trying to send mine back now after the 30 minute motor waranty ran out.
- As a remodeling contractor, I usually sub out drywall finishing, but sometimes a small job or timing make subbing impractical and I'm stuck with the task. Recently I raised a 25'x 30' ceiling from flat to half-cathedral and I did the drywall finish--smooth/no texture. I've always been curious about this sander, but the reviews left me reluctant to buy one for as little as I'd use it. Then I saw that my local rental center had one and this was my chance to try it. I found it to be a life-saver.
Yes, it gets heavy and tiring while sanding a ceiling, but anyone who's ever used a pole sander or hand sander on a ceiling can tell you that it's extremely tiring and messy no matter the tool. At least this power sander eliminates most of the messy part with its effective dust collection, and I was able to sand the entire ceiling in under 30 minutes. Furthermore, I found that it could do aggressive sanding with little more work than light sanding depending on the sandpaper grit and speed I moved the machine, as well as RPM setting. Frankly, I'm mediocre at mudding/taping, but with this sander I found that I could really cake the mud on and still end up with a nice finish.
If I finished drywall full-time, I'd probably get so good at it that this machine might not be worth the hassle, but for a guy like me, it's well worth it. Rent one and try it...you'll either love it or hate it by the end of the day. It's on my wish list.
- I do wallpaper and painting for a living, which often involves wall repairs. I had no trouble learning how to use the sander, the swirl marks others talked about are easy to avoid, but even if you did leave the swirl marks, they would be undetectable through wallpaper or flat paint. Virtually dust free, I could not notice any dust at all. This thing is going to save me a lot of labor in sanding and dust control. So far, I've only used it on two jobs, so my only concern is that it doesn't break on me.

5 comments about DELTA SA350K Shopmaster Boss 1/4 Horsepower 1,724 RPM Benchtop Spindle Sander with Complete Spindle Sander Set.
- For the weekend or hobby woodworker this tool is great. Obviously, a 1/4 horse motor cannot give the power of an industrial sander.I mounted mine on a home made mobile cabinet with locking wheels so I can easily move it around my small shop. I especially enjoy putting a square edge on plywood prior to edge banding......now I have no gaps along the edge.
- I fabricate wooden chairs, ottomans and tables which my wife adds custom graphics. Before I used a drill press and a home built drum to sand the curved surfaces of the chair parts. The BOSS sander has cut the sanding time by 300%. Plus it produces a much better finish.
- I was skeptical about getting this tool after reading all the negative reviews about how flimsy it was and how many broken gear/actuator arms people had encountered. I'm glad to say a friend of mine who owns one (a slightly older model, but to my eye exactly the same unit) talked me into getting it. We both build guitars, and a tool like this is invaluable.
My sander arrived without any problem, set up in minutes and was just fine right out of the box. The table was totally square to the spindle and needed no shimming, the oscillating function worked fine and it operates very quiet and vibration-free. Someone mentioned that the unit is light weight and could walk off a benchtop if not secured. I don't find this to be true at all. While the base is plastic, the table is cast iron and had quite a heft to it. I've run the sander sitting on top of a portable shop table and it stays put just fine. There is no tendancy for it to move at all, so I don't know what the issue was with the other reviews. The large, round table is ideal for what I need to do, and the fact that it's fixed (non-tilt) is a big plus for me. I need to get things square most of the time. I can always make a jig to get an angle, but not having to take the time to re-square the table (and hope it doesn't go out of adjustment) is great and a time saver.
I think some of the problems with the broken oscillating function in other reviews might be because people are trying to hog off more wood than the unit is designed to handle. In my case, it's used for delicate trimming and smoothing. I probably will never sand anything taller than 3", and even then it would be to remove (for example) bandsaw teeth marks or to get the contour of a curve shaped just right. I've already tried this on hardwood (maple, indian rosewood, ebony) and as long as I don't force anything, I've had great results.
I called a local tool store and was give a $250 price plus tax, and the sander didn't include the extra spindle set (they wanted another fifty bucks if I remember right). Not only that, they didn't have it in stock and would need to order it...so please be prepared to wait two to three weeks. I ordered from Amazon, got it for $199 no tax, with the spindle set included. Took four working days to get here.
I'm very satisfied so far, and based on what I've experienced with my sander and the Delta unit owned by my buddy (six years and counting) I don't anticipate any major problems.
- I used this Delta spindle sander for about 4 working sessions only to have it quit oscillating also. Seemed great until this happened. Sounds like Delta needs to remedy the stripping gear problem before it would be recommendable to buy.
- This was the best price, ($249) I could find for this cast iron, beginner's beauty. Did I mention I LOVE cast iron...it will never change shape because cast iron is inherantly stable...did I spell that right? Who cares, you get the point. Cast iron forever! Ps: mine operates very smoothly with no grunts or groans others have experienced. Go for it.

5 comments about Hitachi C10FSB 12 Amp 10-Inch Dual Bevel Sliding Compound Miter Saw.
- great saw love everything about it
wish the 12 slider was just like it
- After giving up an accurate 1980's vintage "Skilsaw" 10" Miter Saw for increased capacity only to experience many years of frustration from time and material wasted working, tuning and retuning a 12" Dewalt Dual Bevel Compound Saw and a Delta 10" Radial Arm Saw(returned to merchant),I decided to try the Hitachi C10FSB 10-Inch Dual Bevel Sliding Compound Saw.
I settled on the Hitachi C10FSB because of the reviews I have read and my personal experience with Hitachi Customer Service Call Center for a Hitachi Compressor I have owned for nine years.
I am 100% satisfied. Specificly the out of the box quality, uncomplicated manual and most of all the accuracy. The sliding tubes are smooth and have NO sloppy play. The adjustments are accessable and ledgable from the front of the saw which makes it practical for mounting to a permanent location. The dust bag and additional special attention designed into the saw guard surprisingly captures most of the dust generated. However I was able to insert 1 1/2" PVC pipe in place of the supplied bag and a couple of 15 degree elbows and connect the Vacuume hose to it. No need to build a custom dust boot or a new configuration to the dust collector. Blade access is designed well without the need of a third hand to hold the guard out of the way while you are changing the blade. One wrench included fits most of the adjustment hardware including the blade. Minor detail but should mention the safety switch position takes some getting used to but it does keep you aware that you are about to start the saw.
Last comment, it is not a heavy brute to pickup and carry. Well balanced and configured. I plan on bragging about and keeping this saw for a LONG time.
- and for what it costs, I should love it, but I don't. It came with a bowed left fence. After two weeks, I still haven't rec'd the replacement, so I can only make cuts from the right side. The right fence is about an inch tall, i.e. TINY. It slides smooth, and cuts wide stock. The blade it came with is good. The table is also pretty small. The saw I'm replacing is a five-year old 12" Dewalt (dual bevel but no slider), which I still prefer, sad to say(bigger table and fences). A couple of colleagues have the 12" Bosch slider, and love it, which at this point I wish I'd bought. Anybody want my Hitachi 10" slider?
- As a full time carpenter, I've used this saw day in and day out for 2 years. My second Hitachi saw. Originally I had the old 8" compound miter saw and used it daily until I finally wore it out after 10+ years. Bought this one as a replacement. Light, accurate, great laser, but this thing just screams. You'll really need hearing protection when using it all day.
It's not an issue with the blade. I use several different blades, it's the electric brake. The soft start is nice and smooth, and not too bad noise wise, but let the trigger go and it really shrieks.
Other than that I would certainaly recommend it if you need a good dependable tool.
Just expect to say "What???" a lot at the end of the day.
Might seem to be a silly complaint, but I've had a significant hearing loss after working around power tools for the last 30+ years, so noise levels have become a criteria as important as accuracy and dependability in my book.
- Arrived with some deep scratches on the base near the miter adjustments. Amazon shipped me a replacement overnight.
The saw seems great. Stock blade is almost good enough for finish work.
The dual bevel adjustment seems a little haphazard. The dust bag is junk but does a decent job collecting roughly 2/3 the dust.
Everything else seems fine to me. Nice miter controls. I agree that a "D" handle would have been much more comfortable.
I bought it at $439, but got a refund for the difference when it dropped to $349. I would not again pay $439 for it, and definitely would not pay $500+ for it.
I do think it's a great saw, though. Amazon service has been outstanding for me.

4 comments about Loveless Ash MU305 Cheetah II 6 Amp 3 Gallon Warm Ash Vacuum.
- This vacum has reduced the dust that use to be created in cleaning the pellet stove. It has made the whole process easy, fast and safe. However,I did not realize that the tools did not come with the vacum and have now ordered them separately.
- The Cheetah works well on my Quadra-Fire pellet stove but it is much noisier than a vacuum cleaner! I purchased it (but not the stove) from a local stove place in Central Massachusetts and once I realized I had been sold the noisier version, I called the place back. They assured me that once the Cougars came in that I could swap the top of the unit while retaining my canister and filter. Well, after several months of follow up calls this place says they have never received any Cougars and even wondered if they were still made! I wish I had checked this site first! I never should have purchased the Cheetah and I think this stove place is the real cheata. I Would suggest purchasing the Cougar since it is about the same price.
- Yes, this is a very noisy vacuum. However, it is a very good vacuum for being able to remove ashes with hot coals still present. With cold ash vacuums you have to wait until the fire is completely out or you'll be sorry. Since I got this vacuum, I'm able to keep the fire going 24 hours a day. In the morning, I just get the ashes from around the still burning coals, throw some more wood on top of the remaining coals and within minutes, I have a blazing fire again.
The occasional coal that you vacuum won't harm the vacuum, except, if it is almost full and a coal rests against the filter, it will burn a hole in it. You just need to remember to empty it before it gets that full.
And since I only use it for about 45 seconds once or twice a day, I can live with the noise from it.
- I bought this item to clean my pellet stove in places that I could'nt get to before. Made my own attachment to get to the really narrow crevices that any thing else I had used did'nt work. After useing this Cheetah II my pellet stove worked like brand new.A must buy for any one owning a pellet stove. Later Matt

5 comments about Grizzly H3140 Belt Sander 1" x 30".
- I bought this sander from amazon.com. I have a 4" craftsman that I use for my heavy-duty stuff, but I needed this stand-up style belt for one kind of job. For less than $100 its a great machine. It tracks well, the belt is decent quality, the motor is quiet and powerful.
I would not recommend this to be the ONLY sander you have in your shop, but if you need the free-standing belt style for some jobs, this is a great buy!
- it's money will spent.i like it because of it's size. it will fit anywhere, when there not much room to work. i even took it to the shop and ues it. and it's grate for hobbies too.i build boats & cars. ....not very good at this, if you would like to call i can answer better over the phone,
- I had this little Grizzly H3140 1 x 30" belt sander for just over a month now. I had a chance to give it a good work out. It serves it's purpose and for the price can't complain too much. The big problem is (and I know it is design and can not be resolved) is the crown in the drive wheels. it puts a bow in the belt so there is no way of getting a nice flat sanding surface with light pressure. The belt has even cut a "U" shape into the table top. It will stall if you try and get aggressive. In fact when I put on a new belt it barley had the power to run it because it was so tight. After it ran a bit and the belt stretched out it was fine. It is certainly not a precision sander and if you think you can get nice small precise sanding this is not for you. It is a great little sander for small stuff too small for the bench top. It is stable and will sit any ware with out fastening it down.
- I have purchased two of these sanders over the last five years. They are very useful for a variety of wood and metal projects. Once you put one on your work bench you will be surprised how frequently you use it. I burned out the motor on my first unit, however I was shaping boat parts out of some fairly hard mahogany. If they made a heavy duty model I would be willing to pay more for it.
- They unit does its job at an economical price.
The workmanship of its construction definitely
tells us its 'Made in China'.
Aligning the support table is difficult, but
the job of this device, is, after all, not to
let you perform stereotaxic brain surgery! Its
saving grace is that it makes the belt move
and its simple. Adjusting lateral travel of the belt is difficult ..
This is
not suited to any commercial application that i can imagine. Thirty-inch belts can be found (Jantz, eg.). It's well-suited for
knife-sharpening but do get at least 400grit
belts for that, and you shouldnt use the
support table for that .. Do it freehand, seeing that the belt rotates downward.
Final impression: It works, at a good price, simply-made, so i do endorse the device for home use.

5 comments about Stanley 12-951 SpokeShave with Flat Base.
- The Stanley 12-951 Contractor Grade Spokeshave is a good first spokeshave. It is easy to fine tune and easy to use. I was a bit disappointed in the sharpening of the blade and it had a rough sole plate, but with a little bit of work it is a nice piece. If you are looking to do your first work with a spokeshave and don't want to spend a lot of money on it, this is the tool for you.
- This is a nice, solid and well made tool. As other reviewers have noted, it wasn't terribly sharp, the blade had grind marks on it, and the sole is a bit coarse upon arrival. After some sharpening, and lapping down the sole and the cap it is really good. No need to spend more that is for sure.
It is easy to find good illustrated guides to tuning up a spokeshave through a web search, and it only takes about half an hour to do.
- I got this spokeshave to use in my bow making. It will take about 45-60 minutes with wet/dry sandpaper from 80 to 600 or 1500 grit to flatten and polish the bottom and to give the blade a good edge, but then it will really make some shavings. It even works decently on ipe.
- I do not use a spokeshave very often, so I was looking for an inexpensive tool that would get the job done. The Stanley Spokeshave was a good choice though I was surprised that the tool arrived in such a poor state. I didn't expect the blade to be sharp, but I did expect it to be flat. It wasn't. Had to spend time flattening the bowed blade and then spend time grinding and polishing the sole of the tool to insure that it was also flat. If your looking for an inexpensive tool and have an hour to tune it up, this would be a good choice. Tool worked great after tuning.
- This is the first spokeshave I've purchased or used and it worked great for me. I have recently ground the bottom face smooth as a couple other reviews said to do, however when I used it to shape my cabriole legs it worked great as is. The cast iron handles give a solid and easy feel. It was necessary to hone the blade first as is to be expected. I was happy to see that it was made in England and not China also. I have several Stanley planes that work great. They take a bit to get adjusted just right but when they are set I'm happy.

5 comments about Bosch 1295DVSK 2.2 Amp 5-Inch Palm Grip Variable Speed Random Orbit Palm Sander with Dust Canister.
- Bought two of these based on recommendations from others. I am a boat builder and use these sanders three days/week. First the hook pads went out on them requiring new ones at $20/each after 6mos usage. Then the motor on one went out requiring replacement in the warranty period. Can't use either of them now and they will both require repair. They worked great while they lasted but didn't last too long.
- Only sander that actually has great dust control that doesn't cost hundreds of dollars. Just keep the pleated filter clean with your air compressor and dump the dust after every project.
The only better sander would be the festool ones with powered vac to match but I can't justify that for my shop. THIS IS A GREAT ALTERNATIVE.
- When I had decided to become a woodworking hobbyist, I spent about 6+ months doing nothing but review tools. My goal was simple: find quality tools that I could learn with, make decent furniture with, would last me at least a couple years while I learned, and most importantly would not break the bank.
I am still learning, I don't have a couple years under my (or my tools) belt yet, and I have build a few projects (mostly shop items.) Although it has only been a few things I have built, I have used all the tools I purchased. One of those tools is the Bosch 1295DVSK Random Orbital Sander. I can tell already, with minimal use, that some of the negative things said in other reviews are true but then again so are most the positives. The sander does have a slight wobble when you initially start it up - this could potentially damage a fine piece of wood. Bosch does sell softer sanding pads that would help minimize this effect. The dust "bag"/filter isn't all that it's cracked up to be but then again, there aren't many tools that have a great catch all dust bag - filter system. If you use it frequently, buy the optional vacuum attachment and hook that up. The sander also doesn't make good use of the center of the sandpaper with its "nickel-sized" hole and I could see it ripping out on corners but honestly, who would use a power tool like this to sand/round edges or corners and expect good results either on your work piece or your equipment?? Don't be afraid to use a little elbow grease...But I digress...
This tool has more positive than negative. The on/off switch is easy to reach, the sander feels good in the hands, and the variable speed makes working with different woods possible. If you are looking for a good quality ROS that will give you above average results that is not going to break the bank then buy the Bosch 1295DVSK. If you are doing this for a living or working in your shop 30+ hours a week then buy the Festool Rotex RO 150 FEQ......for $475
- I bought 2 of these mainly for the name I had not used one before. Not very happy with it. The dust canister leaks like a seive. It is pretty much useless for dust collection and it is hard to get the latches to stay closed and it falls off sometimes. the sanding pad for some reason only cuts at the edge of the pad. It is like the pad is cupped it also vibrates more than the Makita or Dewalt I have used. I won't buy this brand again.
- I chose this sander based on a top review from fine woodworking, and as a woodworker, cabinetmaker and finish carpenter, my sanders get a fair amount of use. I like how it feels in my hand, most RO sanders are too big on top- unfortunately, that's about the only good thing I can say about it. The dust collector has never worked- I can sand all day, and barely anything makes it into the canister- my old dewalt with a cloth bag worked much better. The other problem is durability- in just over a year, I've replaced the hook and loop pad three times, and now the bearing for the orbit action has gone out, and the pad wobbles instead of sanding flat, resulting in a poor finish , and lots of vibration and torque. And you can't replace the bearing without replacing the entire fan/spinning assembly. I own a lot of bosch tools, but I feel like I've been throwing money and parts at this thing since I bought it. I just replaced it with a makita, and the dust collection is superb.

5 comments about DEWALT DC825KA Heavy-Duty 18 Volt Compact Impact Driver.
- This driver works well but gets EXTREMELY hot during extended use. It reached close to 130-135 degrees at the top of the grip and on the back of the motor housing not to mention the gear housing was hotter. The battery needs to cool for an hour before the charger will begin to charge. The driver needs a better cooling fan if it's to be used for more than 1/2 hour at a time. For intermittent use it would be fine. The forward/reverse switch could use a more positive detend and or more throw.
- I have owned two of the regular duty impact drivers and have used them extensively. One of them is about worn out, so I tried the heavy duty model. I am very pleased and would definitely buy another one when I need it. I made the plunge and all of my cordless tools are DeWalt 18 volt. I really appreciate the interchangeable batteries. If you are debating on buying the heavy duty or standard duty impact driver, this is a recommendation for the heavy duty. The noticeable differences are the led light that turns on when the trigger is pressed and the smaller size.
- I know a 1/4" impact is going to have play in the chuck, but this wobbles around like crazy. It works it's way out of phillips very easily. With a Dewalt 3" driver the thing is unusable; the tip (while fully seated and under pressure is eccentric by 3mm!!! Even star drivers want to pop out.
That might be okay for big 1/4" or 3/8" lags, but anything smaller, forget it.
You might as well get the 1/2" if you're working with fasteners that big.
- I have been using a 14.4 dewalt xrp cordless screw/gun for the past 5 years and have had GREAT success with it. The original two batteries keep on ticking no problems at all plus the tool has taken heavy abuse (dropped, banged, etc. For drilling, the tool is great, can go through 1/4" plate steel no problem. For driving screws, lag bolts it gets the job done no problem but I have always had an interest in impact drivers. I have never used one before(air or cordless) so I figured I would give it a whirl. I am VERY loyal to brands. The screwgun was my first dewalt purchase and since then i have bought everything dewalt(router, table saw, angle grinder, circular saw, jigsaw.
So I brought the impact driver home, gave the batteries a full charge then let er rip on some 3" drywall screws. I was blown away. You blink, its in. I used to have to lean on the cordless screw gun to drive drywall screws.
Moved up to lag screws (5/16ths 3" inch no predrill) the dewalt laughed, no problem at all.
Moved up to taking nuts off 1/2 bolts that were touqed to 80ft/lbs, no problem.
My only regret is that I didnt purchase this tool earlier. Also, using both the impact driver and the drill together saves a TON of time not having the change bits.
I would pay $500 for this tool if I had to.
- This impact works much better than Dewalt's previous model, also it is much more comfortable to use. It has a good deal of power for driving screws, I haven't tried drilling with it as I have a regular 18 volt drill for that. A previous reviewer said that the one he got has a great deal of runout, mine does not share that quality with his, I have no problem driving any kind of screw, except flat blade screws. I bought this mostly for driving screws into metal and it works great even better with the new nano batteries. I would reccomend this tool to any one who drive alot of fastners, especially if they drive larger fastners.
