3 comments about Stiletto Tools Inc TI14MS Titan? 14 Oz Titanium Framing Hammer With Straight Han.
  1. For those unfortunate enough to have some form of repetitive stress injury (for example, tennis/framers elbow) this hammer is excellent. Due to the highly ductal quality of titanium, there's less rebound--transferring more power to the nail--so the hammer drives like a 22 to 24 oz framer. If it's still too light for you, wait for the 16 oz titanium. It's less like a California framer and more a classic Vaughn style and drives like a 28 oz.

  2. The hammer that I purchased is a casting, and not a forged hammer head that I thought I was going to receive. As a result one claw broke off on the first nail that I tried to pull. It certainly is not worth the price! Steer away from this one, if you expect to use it for more than a wall decoration. Doesn't anyone make a forged titanium hammer?

  3. The last company I worked for had several guys that were hard core Stiletto believers. The weight of the titanium is awesome. It allows anyone to drive nails all day long without getting a tired arm, and tennis elbow in the long run. However, the handles are usually junk. One guy went through 2 Stiletto handles in 2 weeks, then finally got a Craftsman handle. The Craftsman never broke on him. I recommend buying a different handle right off, or drilling a hole through the top of the handle and packing a rod (steel or metal) into the hole so the rod goes past the base of the Titanium head where the handles normally break. The way it appears with all the Titanium wood handle Stiletto hammers they are either a really good hammer, or they are junk and break. BTW pulling nails with Stiletto hammers voids the warranty. They recommend a nail puller to pull ALL nails. Spend the extra $130 and get the solid Titanium Stiletto. You won't regret it and it will last forever.

  1. I bought the CLC bucket organizer at the same time. So far I've taken a liking to the bucket. I was a little surprised that this had a somewhat soft bottom, which tends to make heavy items slip under the adjustable partition. I'm sure in time I will find a use for it.

  1. Bought mine from Amazon for $40 when the Irwin blade I had originally bought from Amazon arrived quite warped and I sent it back. The Bosch is a good blade, flat, thin kerf, clean cuts, American made. Not as pretty as some of the more expensive blades, but I don't see how they would do a better job and justify their additional cost. Kind of chintsy cardboard packaging it come in, though. Even the Irwin came in a plastic sleeze pack that facilitates safe storage.

  1. I am quite happy with this product. I have bought other brands in the past, but they just don't compare to the quality of Freud router bits. All my cabinet making bits are now Freud's.
I will definitely buy this brand again.

  2. I own a couple of Freud bits and have been satisfied with their performance. I had to get this bit to match a customer's existing doors and it was worth the purchase. The bit provided a smooth cut, something I've come to expect from Freud.

  1. I've found nothing better for removing tile grout. We can clean at least 10 standard tile tub surrounds with each blade - more or less. About $10 a surround. I'd like to know if something better (faster and longer lasting) exists.

  2. I think the Fein tool looks like a fine piece of equipment. The high price, especially for replacement blades, has always given me cause for pause. With respect to grout removal tools, I recommend the Grout Grabber as a lower cost, but very effective alternative, if you happen to have a Sawzall, or equivalent saw. Amazon has the Grout Grabber for about $15. You can add or remove carbide cutters to match the grout line thickness (more cost for extra blades).

I used the Grout Grabber to repair about 25 16"x16" tiles. The broken tiles were not next to one another, so I had to cut 64 linear inches per tile. 2 blades were used for the entire job. The blades were installed back-to-back on the tool. When the outside edges became worn, I swapped the blade positions to use the fresh edge.

You have to be mindful of the blade position as you cut, so that you don't mar or damage the adjacent good tiles. It is possible to jump out of the grout line early in the cut, if you're not careful. You also have to be mindful of how deep you cut. The blade attachment bolts will scrape and damage tile if you cut too deeply. A steady hand and diligent eye will go far towards avoiding problems. Keep the shop vac close by to remove the grout dust, and keep the cutting line clear.

The Sawzall might be a bit heavy for protracted wall work. Since my projects are all personal home projects, I think I can put up with a lot of discomfort for the cost of a Fein, blade. If I was doing this for a living, and I could pass the cost to the customer, I think I would take the Fein plunge.

  1. I frankly have zero interest in golf, but I did need a portable, light-duty rotary tool for cleaning battery contacts and light buffing, and this one does very well. It runs on disposable AA alkaline batteries rather than a rechargeable battery pack, and I consider that a plus, since it results in lower immediate cost and avoids the irritating self-discharge characteristics and lengthy recharge times of NiCd and NiMH batteries. Torque is limited, but ample for things other than metal grinding or wood routing. It's a useful tool.

  2. Since that there are very few cordless drills made for the hobbyist/modeler, I converted this tool to an excellent drill by replacing the 1/8" collet with a 0" collet, whereas, it will accept #60 thru #80 drill bits. Of course, the low speed of 5,000 RPM may be too fast for plastic or metal, it works great on wood.

  3. The best price I've found for a battery-operated Dremel is the Golf Cleaning Tool Kit. Similar tools, albeit with sanding drum attachments, are sold as "pet grooming tools" and cost significantly more. I use this tool regularly for grinding toenails on my show dogs and find they vastly prefer this battery-operated tool to a corded, electric one. This tool is capable of many traditional high speed/low torque rotary tool tasks.

If you're looking for battery powered convenience (4-AA batteries), I highly recommend this two-speed tool. Battery life is reasonable and though the tool is not too cumbersome in the hand for most jobs, if you have a job that requires you to hold it like a pencil it can become a bit fatiguing (it's pretty heavy at the end opposite your work.) The button-lock means you don't have to fool around with small wrenches to tighten or loosen the collett when changing attachments. If you find instances where the convenience of battery operability is of paramount importance, this is a very plausible tool to consider.

  4. You need to look before you leap. Amazon is not, and has not been for a long time, the cheaper buy. Home depot sells this exact same tool for $19.99. Just do a search for Dremel.
