1. Peter Joel Harrison's books are full of accurate drawings of period fences, gates, gazebos, trellises, pavement and garden walls. They are tools for anyone who's restoring an 18th or 19th century home or landscape. They are perfect inspiration for anyone who hopes to infuse some of yesterday's charm into a new project. Harrison provides a valuable service to architects, designers, preservationists, landscapers and homeowners by researching, recording and presenting the details of historic homes and gardens. I've started using ideas from this book in my designs, and they are better for it.



2. I am a Landscape Designer interested in historical architecture in the New England Area. The entire series of books by Peter Joel Harrison should be in every designer's library. They are an excellent source for restoration work, and a valuable tool when discussing ideas with clients. Anyone interested in beautiful garden details will be inspired by the wonderful drawings.
   I purchase the original release of the fence and pavement books several years ago, and I now have copies of the updated issue. Updating to the newer editions is well worth it.



3. this book just didnt pan out for the money. I have a fencing company in B.C. Canada and was hoping to find some great American ideas.It only has drawings of unfeasble ideas.



4. For heavens sake, pick a few pages other than just chapter headings. I can't make a decision without viewing the author's clarity of writing or detail drawing

1. This book is geared towards building structures that were used by outdoorsmen from years past. It covers how to make a bed from natural materials, a log cabin, Native American log house, and how to work an axe just to name a few topics covered in this book. The drawings of the dwellings in the book are simple (but not in depth plans or charts). The author does a great job of explaining how to construct these devices, but as I said a drawn picture is all your going to get if your a visual learner. Over all the book does what it says it will do, gives the reader good information, and I personally wouldn't be caught dead without it if I was trapped in the middle of nowhere by myself.



2. I know that most people will find this book to be anything but "green" however, I found this concept to be perfect in a world that sometimes forgets what it is like to be young at heart. Some of the shelters are not safe and one should always supervise young children who if left alone will build forts and such, yet there is a certain allure about thinking you are back in time and surviving on your own wits. Great ideas for survival campouts or if you like getting out "there" and just might once or twice get too far out "there" and find yourself in the need of an overnight shelter. Loved the book and will use or adapt many of the detailed plans.



3. This book is great! I would recommend this to anyone 12+, because the shelters are quite hard to build. It is excellent for boy scouts. I got this for Christmas and in my troop were starting on plans already! Great for any wilderness lover and I recommend all the related books!

5. I was looking for ideas on simple structures for the homestead. The book is a bit dated, but you have to go back to find simple, uncomplicated ideas. We have grown so accustomed to specialized fasteners, tools and other hardware. Building a simple shed can be expensive when you have to buy materials. We have an abundance of raw materials and this book provided some ideas towards cost effective structures.

1. If you're looking for ideas for your own outdoor room, this probably isn't a good book for you. It's a lovely looking book and has a few really nice things, but like many books of this kind, it doesn't actually have that many ideas to offer.

1. This book has a beautiful front cover and several pages of color photos. However, the vast majority of the book is comprised of house plans, many of which that do not have porches other than small stoops. These house plans contain no specific reference to porches, there are no individual porch plans, drawings or elevations. This is a very disappointing book that utterly fails to live up to it's cover....



2. I picked this book up when I was looking for a house plan that included porches (which the first reviewer should have known if they'd read the title!). I'd looked through so many house plan books and found the perfect plan in this book! It's great! Lots of color pictures and beautiful house plans. If you're looking for something different, this book is for you.



3. This is not a book about porches, but rather a house plans book. You've seen those "books" in the magazine racks at your favorite mega-chain bookstore: a softcover book of house plans. Sure, all the house plans have porches - in one form or another - but you will not learn anything about porches in this book.

1. Being a landscape designer I'm always looking for resources and design details that can help me expand my own repertoire. Great Pools and Spas is well shot and has 'great' upscale landscapes to ponder and examine. My copy is teaming with post-its, and that's a good thing.
