  1. Our neighborhood handyman, Tony, swears by this book. He diagnosed and fixed my washing machine (18 years old) with this book and the part cost less the $20 (it was the pump). A repair man was willing to come out and fix it for $100 to $120. Tony advised us to get this book and so that's what I am doing!

  2. Very informative diagnostic and repair instructions for many of the typical major appliances found in homes today. Describes common repairs that refrigerators, ranges, dishwashers, washers, dryers and water heaters usually require even through normal, everyday use.

The detailed illustrations help describe component test and replacement procedures that enable non-technical persons to understand the cause and work towards a solution. This reference will allow homeowners to quickly determine if a repair is within their ability or if it requires professional attention.

Don't wait until your appliance breaks down to get this book. It is a great reference and is a must for all homeowners! It would also make a nice house warming gift that will be used and appreciated years to come.

  3. Simplistic and sparse....not of any use except for
the most simple of problems. Don't waste your money...
unfortunately I did. Buy the Cheap & Easy series of books....they're excellent and detailed and informative.

  1. So informative, we discarded our VCR repairman & his number! We were so excited about actually taking on a project together being a Married couple and successfully doing so(Thanks to the Complete Vcr Troubleshooting & Repair Guide) That TWO Career Tech Support reps Working for Two Rivals completed successfully ONE Communtity Project!!!

  2. Starts out with easy to read introduction with block diagrams. The next chapter goes into troubleshooting equipment and tools which was good. Beginning with the chapter on maintenance, it tries to show the parts that need to be lubricated and cleaned. With "Determining the Problem" chapter, the amateur is left behind in favor of the seasoned technician, introducing acromnyms and VCR model numbers without explaination. From there on, it gets worse with full schematic diagrams guaranteed to have beginners running to the service center. The pictures are in black and white and hard to make out (quality equal to a photo copier) left me disappointed. The following chapters goes in to problems with each section of the vcr ending with case studies of classic problems likely to be encoutered by techs. I a have background in digital and audio electronics but haven't work in video electronics (TV) since 1981. I thought this book with it's 180 pgs and medium text would get me up to speed on the state of the art. Unforuntately it failed for me. I gave it 2 stars since it could help seasoned service techs with better a better background on the subject then myself. I'm opting for a text book.

  1. With over 15 years of experience and up to date on all of the new product lines as well as the upper level machines, I must say that this book isn't worth the paper it is printed on. Most if not all of the information contained is readily available from the manufacturer of the appliance. If you have a more serious problem with your machine then you do in fact need a technician to inspect it and give you the options to repair it CORRECTLY or to purchase a new machine. Put your dollar to use and hire a real professional, with real, in the field experience. I wish I could rate this no stars!

  2. This book is for the person that simply wants to understand the basic common sense of household appliances. In reading the book I felt as though my father was sitting next to me advising me as to what to do next. The recipe for cleaning the dishwasher and the insights about keeping the fridge running are worth the price of the book (and there's a whole lot more besides that in the book)! If you are like me and not too knowledgable about home appliances then I highly recommend this book. It will be one that will be open often.

  3. I cannot believe the other negative reviews. This book was written for people like me. I didn't have a whole lot of knowledge of how things worked around the house growing up and this book is like having my father next to me advising me on what to do next. There is a lot of common sense things in this book that will assist the common person in the house about how to fix the little things that can cost so much. I needed it. If you are a do-it-youself person and already have a lot of knowledge concerning household products then this may not be the one for you. If you want to know more about how your appliances work in your house and also learn to discover a rip-off when you see one - then this book is for you. It is a must for every household. The procedure for cleaning the dishwasher is worth the price of the book!! EXCELLENT STUFF!!! HIGH RECOMMENDATION!!!!

  4. I found the tips and helpful hints to be very useful. It is written in a way that even "regular" people can save money and save time. I am thankful for this information and am recommending it to all my friends.

  5. Every household should have a book like this, maybe in the kitchen - but maybe not THIS book!

This slim paperback is essentially avuncular advice on some routine home maintenance, mostly but not entirely appliance-oriented, plus some basic troubleshooting tips. Some of it IS common sense - but common sense is not all that common!

Note that this is NOT a DIY repair book like "The Readers Digest Complete Do It Yourself Manual" - although it would make a great adjunct to that book. There's a potentially useful list of 800 numbers for major appliance manufacturers at the end, and some references to DIY advice sites within, but it's all kind of scattershot. There's some good advice in here, but it would be better as a volume in a set of home maintenance books.

Most of the advice of Joe Gagnon, "the Appliance Doctor," is not about how to do without repairmen, but how to evaluate them - how to make wise choices about appliances and maintenance, and avoid getting scammed. Apparently that scares the heck out of "experienced repairmen," which is a sign of how important this book is!!! However although the info is useful, and worth much more than the price of the book, there is a LOT more that could be said about easy, safe repairs that a homeowner can make without calling in a putative "pro" at $50+ an hour.

All in all this book is a LOT better than nothing, but there's a LOT more that could be said!
