5 comments about Caring for Your Old House: A Guide for Owners and Residents (Respectful Rehabilitation Series).
  1. This book was required for an architectural conservation class which I am currently enrolled in. I have found it extremelly helpfull. Unfortunantly I bought this book at the bookstore for a lot more money. The author gets quite technical at times, however they give you quick insights that are at once complete and easy to read. This is definantly a very affordable guide for home owners, designers, and preservationists of all sorts.

  2. I bought this as a gift for a friend. He shared it with me after reading it cover-to-cover. Great info for anyone concerned with historic preservation. Not quite the "handyman" book I had expected but nonetheless it proved to be some worthwhile reading.

  3. Finally a concise, easy to read text that any historical home owner should own and read. It is the bible of historical building maintenance! This text should be used by every historical society and historic preservation commission as a guide for recommending proper ways to treat and maintain historic building materials. It would be a wonderful text to suggest to an interested student, as well. Thanks Judith for putting something together that is so user-friendly!

  4. This book is filler material, you could find all this info online or in Lowe's or Home Depot. If you have any clue on what you are doing beyond a starter DIY save your money.

  5. A great read for devotees of This Old House, this book chronicles the story of their very first project. Old pics of Norm are especially fun.

1 comments about The Complete Idiot's Guide to Investing In Fixer-Uppers (The Complete Idiot's Guide).
  1. This book achieves what it sets out to do: provide a simple introduction to the topic of real estate fixer-uppers and give the beginner a guidemap of a first deal.

It walks the potential investor through the main steps, from finding and choosing a house, to inspecting it, to purchasing it, to doing the basic fixes, to putting it in the market for sale. Being a "Complete Idiots Guide", one knows what to expect, and this book does exactly what it sets out to do. It is particularly useful in giving small tips that would likely only be known by someone with much experience that has fallen into many traps.

  1. I've always liked the Trend magazines and the book is even better. Tons of pictures of kitchens and baths. It also has many contemporary styles which I like. The magazines are about $10.00 an issue, so the book is actually a great price. Lots of original ideas.

3 comments about Porches & Sunrooms: Your Guide to Planning and Remodeling (Better Homes and Gardens(R)).
  1. I could not find any other books like this that showed me all the possibilities and helped me decide what kind of room was right for our house, where to put the room, and even how to decorate it.This isn't a book about building it yourself but about getting your own goals and ideas straight before you call in the builder or the architect or the seller of sunroom additions,

  2. The Guide would be useful to an interior decorator. I was looking for help in estimating cost and materials needed to build a porch.

  3. I bought this book, along with another on building additions, when I was rebuilding an old porch that was falling apart because of bad construction. I needed some ideas on what to make it look like and how to go about it. I liked the basic design of the original, but it's execution was poor. The many pictures of such a variety of porches showed me what I needed to do, and the end result of my little project is one of my favorite rooms in the house. The book shows porches in various climate zones, although all of them were larger than my project, it's nice to be able to apply ideas from bigger and fancier to smaller projects to add just a bit of elegance to what would otherwise be only average.

  1. I believe you should post free catalogies to customers and online requesters.

If there like it, then they will purchase after.

  2. If you are looking for ideas and inspiration, this book will be helpful because it is mainly composed of beautiful photos of all types of bathrooms and situations. It does contain brief sections which cover layout basics, design ideas and remodeling realities but the bulk of the book are photos to help inspire and give design ideas. A "shopper's guide" in the back of the book covers countertops, cabinets, wall coverings, flooring, windows and skylights and light fixtures. If you are looking for more technical information and instruction, you might want to take a look at "Bathrooms: Design, Remodel, Build" published by Creative Homeowner.

  3. I like many of the books in the Ideas for Great series. However, I was disappointed with this one. The photos are only so-so. They are not very inspiring, and the bathrooms are limited in style choices. The tips also left something to be desired. They were not very substantive or informative. I would skip this book. If you want a bathroom book with great photos, take a look at House Beautiful Bathrooms.

  4. This book only shows enormous homes with tons of space. I'm a city dweller and can't see how this book can accommodate a (average to small) sized city bungalow, townhouse or condominium. Most of the homes displayed are these huge newer homes. If you're tight on space and want to re-do your bathroom, this book will just confuse you with unrealistic ideas.

5 comments about The Portland Cement Association's Guide to Concrete Homebuilding Systems.
  1. This book is an Ugly Duckling for now. Hopefully in the future they will put out a new edition with lots of colour photo's to show us what a finished project can look like. It does seem to cover most systems for building concrete structures. It is written for contractors, but with a little work it could be just as well suited for the potential home owner.

  2. Remember, this book is almost TEN years old because it is based on research done in 1993 and published in '95. So there have been advances and experience that go well beyond this book. Dwell magazine has often tickled me with various new building techniques and I wanted to learn more about what might be appropriate for me and the Midwestern climate. This book will give you an overview of SOME of the styles (mortarless, poured-in-place, etc.), and also indicate what might be appropriate for your situation. I'm not a builder or an architect but I wanted to design my own house, so this book did help me to recognize and comprehend the different catagories of techniques. At the same time, this topic could really use an update that you won't find from the Portland Cement Association. My advice to people like me is to keep looking and seek out small-scale builders who will familiarize you with their technique that they know best. There are dozens, and the most difficult thing is getting a crew that doesn't have to be trained for a new technique but has already completed several homes using a proven method.

This book, even though it is somewhat old will give you a good sense of what to expect from building codes and prices, but it's just not enough, and there are no pretty pictures.

  3. As we may note upon reading this tome, it is written primarily for one who is articulate with the construction trade. However it is onomonopoetic in its scope. As you read you find yourself absorbing and understanding far more than seems possible. One gets it quickly and is allowed to dream of design possibilities. I love a good book. Learning at an exponential rate is exhilerating.

  4. This is as another reviewer stated, "Advertising." Completely unpractical from either an engineer or buildler's point of view. Steer clear.

  5. I purchased this book in 1995. It was and still is the only book of it's kind. It provides data such as time, cost, quality for a wide range of concrete construction methods. Yes there have been changes since 1994 but actual very little. I have built 12 concrete homes including my personal home of 10 years, using serveral systems covered in this excelent book
