1. This is a great book that walks you through the fundamentals to the more complex aspects of energy conservation in residential units. I find it easy to read, well organized with good graphics and tables.

3. This book might be useful for someone just digging into the issues of residential heating and cooling. It's presentation format doesn't presume the reader has much prior knowledge of the material, which dovetails nicely with the medium-level details of the material. I consider it a pretty decent overview, but by the time I had read it, other materials I had covered made this book redundant.



4. Consider starting with "Insulate and Weatherize: Expert Advice from Start to Finish" by Bruce Harley instead which is a more practical "Go Do It" book with lots of photographs. "Residential Energy" does have more formulas and the like.



5. Nicely done book for beginning residential energy auditor at the coomunity college level. Updated with lots of additional info in the back. With the cost of energy becoming a current issue, this book covers it all. So, if you want to enter this emerging field, this book would be a helpful start.

1. This course textbook is an excellent tool for both the beginner and the experienced architect with regard to expanding one's knowledge base on energy designing. The text starts with basic information relating to the environment and site analysis, then provides detailed design concepts for practical use. The materials include current examples for review and study, as well as a wealth of tables and calculation aids for application of the theories studied. Even the individual who just wants a single source for receiving a working knowledge of how to evaluate a site's characteristics with regard to the environment would benefit from this text.



2. good introduction to heating lighting and cooling systems in buildings. Covers basic physical principles, human response, design response to site and ong emphasis on passive systems with lighter coverage of mechanical and electrical systems. Lots of wroked examples, case studies, design guidelines, and illustrations by the author. Useful both as a text for architecture students as well as a refresher for practitioners.

1. Friday night, after our condominium's maintenance service had closed for the weekend, my garbage disposal stopped working. My sink was full of garbage. I remembered someone have given me a copy of this book and looked up garbage disposal. There, in several brilliantly clear paragraphs, Gene and Katie Hamilton told me exactly how to fix my machine using a little gadget that came with the machine that I would never have known had a purpose -- without electrocuting myself or cutting off my fingers. There is nothing more thrilling than fixing something you never thought you could fix yourself. (Here's a situation where the word "empowerment" really means something.) When I think of the times I have paid a plumber a small fortune for a minor fix like this that I could, with the right instructions, have fixed myself...I wish I'd had this book sooner! I am definitely giving a copy of this book to some fellow plumbing dummies for Christmas.



2. This book is poor.

   The illustrations are not very helpful. Photos could be much better.

   Don't buy it.

1. When I first purchased my house, I bought a plethora of home repair books. This stood out as one of the best. It offers all the information you would need for basic plumbing repairs within the house. From the bathtub to the kitchen sink to the toilet, this book covers all sorts of problems that arise in the average household. A great book for the home repair library. Invaluable.

1. They've done it again! From the new kitchen book and kids' rooms book to this. There are some unbelievably do-able and creative projects in this book.

   Plus this is the first time I've seen a good description of how to put in glass block. I wish it was available when I did my first (and only) glass block project two years ago. The glass block manufacturers instructions were moronic compared to this. Even a web search produced lousy instructions.

   Also, not only do they give you the idea for stenciled wall texture, but the stencils are included, just photocopy them to size and cut them out! I'm glad this book is here, what will be next for these "Reinventors"? Consistent writing and good instructions make this book (and the others in the series) a great guide for people like me who aren't very industrious. Thanks Sunset!




2. Reinvent Your Bathroom is not at all what I had anticipated. I expected bathrooms to be photographed before & after reflecting spectalar changes!
   
   The let down was primarily due to the quality of some of the make-overs, photographs that often showed the finished project so close up, one could not really decipher what it actually ended up looking like.
   
   For example, pg. 85 shows a Cornice finished so up-close that even though they show you on the following page how to build it...you never get to see the overall effect it would have in a room.
   
   Planning & lay-out is greatly lacking, yet the quality of the photographs seems ok.
   
   I just didn't find ANY of the projects very impressive...
   
   The Cottage Cupboard project on pg. 61 was nice & the Tile Surround around the window on pg. 98 was a novel idea...but quite frankly the book just isn't worth buying... there just isn't enough quality & the presentation is altogether poor.
   
   Sorry Sunset...you've done so much better than this...
