5 comments about Gilmour Electronic Water Timer, Teal/Black #9100.
  1. I purchased 4 of these last year and only one is functional this year. The problem is the battery cover leaks water in which ruins the timer. Also, the start button is really difficult to push. I'm trying a different model this year.

  2. The Gilmour Electric Water Timer is a quick and easy way to get your watering on a regular schedule. I had invested a significant amount of money and effort in soaker hoses and needed a way to regularly water my vegetable garden without forgetting to turn the water off each time! I have this water timer setup to water every 12 hours (morning and evening) for 20 minutes. It works great.

  3. Worked well first year. Next year the valve would not shut off water and allowed for unwanted slow and steady stream. Also, it tends to freeze up if you play with the buttons too much. The remedy is to take out the batteries for a few minutes.

  4. I purchased this product and rush shipped it so that I could install it before I went out of town. I spent about an hour trying different things to make it work and I was totally disappointed. I wasted my time. I understand that things could go wrong with products. I got a taste of what the company thinks about their product when I called the Gilmour customer service the next day. The customer rep suggested that I buy another model of their product which is more reliable. Reading between the lines 'We do not trust our products'. They should not be in this business if they do not trust their own products.

I am disappointed that Amazon carries such products! Amazon agreed to credit me for the product. Who will pay for the wasted time!

  5. I have found this product to be easy to use. Consistently dependable. I have purchased three of these timers. After one year one stopped working so I bought the fourth. So far it is working well, as are the other two that I am using now. The store where I purchased the timers no longer sells them. That is when I went online and foumd them through Amazon.

5 comments about Fiskars Long Handled Swivel Grass Shears #9210.
  1. Fiskars Long Handled Swivel Grass Shears #9210 I really thought this purchase would do the trick - not so! These grass shears are awkward to use and frustrating as can be. Perhaps if there were wheels/rollers on the bottom of the shaft so the shears could be better balanced and glide smoothly over the lawn surface or the driveway - whichever! Trying to trim along a driveway or walk way with these shears is next to impossible - forget it! I do not recommend.

  2. I grew up with one of these and was afraid they didn't make them any more. I'm not a power tool person and these are an improvement on an old classic. The swiveling head and the locking mechanism are features I didn't expect to have. So very happy that Amazon.com sells these!!

  3. We bought these for my sister who has had a hip replacement. The ease an flexibility of this tool allows her to trim in areas that were difficult to access before. Very happy with this product.

  4. I received the Fiskars Long Handled Trimmer very fast and that same evening I trimmed around all the flower beds in my backyard. They are wonderful and I will be using them for a long time to come. I am a wheelchair user, homeowner and plant lover. This product has enabled me to keep my yard looking well manicured and that makes me very happy. Thanks Fiskars.

  5. My requirements for this tool are simple: help me clip around a few obstacles in the lawn after mowing, without firing up a gas trimmer or dealing with jammed or empty string spools. Just give me some hand shears that I can operate without stooping or crawling on hands and knees. I was surprised that this was the only product I could find that fit the bill. It works as expected. I would have been willing to pay a bit more for something sturdier and with longer blades, but this seems to work. It's definitely not for heavy duty use.

5 comments about Black & Decker 12-Inch 3.5-AMP Electric Bump Feed String Trimmer and Edger #ST4000.
  1. This trimmer is simple to use and is light-weight. It has much more power than my old B&D cordless one, and no need to worry about the battery giving out--just get a long extension cord and go to work. Wear good shoes--it's powerful and could take off a toe!

  2. This trimmer is a good light-weight workhorse. I used it to edge my grass along the concrete and it did a good job plowing thru 6-inch thick chunks of crabgrass and dirt so I think it does have a good amount of power to it. It handled the rest of my trimming with ease. It's a bit more of a struggle to put together than most trimmers (I've owned several). The metal guard bar on the front of the trimmer just refuses to stay on no matter what you do so I use it without that: I haven't noticed any problem with functionality or safety. The bump feed doesn't work terribly well either, but that's true of every other trimmer I've owned too! Overall, this trimmer will the do what the average homeowner needs a trimmer to do.

  3. As far as string trimmers go...I am very impressed with this Black & Decker model. It is tough enough to do the fairly big jobs and yet small enough to be light. I think it is the perfect trimmer for a woman for example. This may be a single line trimmer rather than a dual line but that makes it easier to wind the line on the spool and it can do the job. The bump-feed works well also. I have used a number of different brands of line trimmers over the years and I think Black & Decker make the best electric edger/trimmers.

  4. Great product, works wonderful for small yards , and you don't have to pay for gas to use it. Just make sure you have a long extention cord. It is pretty heavy after 10 min (my arms got tried after a while),but it does get the job done and at an excellent price. I have never been unhappy with a Black & Decker

  5. I got a great value deal and fast easy service, just like you promised. thank you.

5 comments about Gnatrol - 32 oz.
  1. Gnatrol did not work. After 3 heavy doses to plants in our home over a period of 3 weeks, the fungus gnats continuied to thrive.I would not recommend this product. I had to resort to flying insect spray to get rid of the fungus gnats.

  2. I have a small plant business and had a nat problem in one of the offices. I tell you I tried everything. Nothing would work. This stuff is incredible,
I doesn't kill the plant nor does it have a bad odor. It takes a couple of weeks but boy does it work. I'm using my second bottle, i would highly recommend this product!!

  3. I just started using Gnatrol a few weeks ago and the gnats coming out of my plants has greatly reduced. I mean, they're not completely gone, and I do start to see a surge of them after I water my plants, but I have sticky traps right next to the plants, so the gnats don't get far. I have noticed that my plants are getting brown, but I don't know whether that is due to the gnatrol or other factors. I think I may have used too concentrated a solution the first time. But, all in all, I am satisified with the product.

  4. I've got a bunch of houseplants at my home & office. I had a real problem with gnats, including one zebra plant (Aphelandra squarrosa) that was horribly infested. I've been using Gnatrol for over a month now, as directed on the package for "heavy infestation." I've noticed a reduction in gnats, but I haven't gotten rid of them entirely. Some plants still have three or four gnats flying around them every time I check, and of course that means there are probably dozens more hidden in the mulch or about to emerge from the soil. The plant that was horribly infested still seems to be infested, despite my frequently drenching it with a strong Gnatrol solution. I therefore have a hard time agreeing that this product is highly effective against gnats--how can they survive the drenchings if Gnatrol is so good at killing the larvae?

Two potential problems occurred to me that I would point out: First, Gnatrol only targets a single species of insect. If you have something similar but not the same species, it might not work as well or at all. Second, insects like gnats can adapt and evolve within a very short period of time because there may only be a few days between generations-- that's why many genetic experiments are conducted on fruit flies. If the gnats could develop some trait that helps them survive the presence of Gnatrol in the soil, you'd have to find another way to get rid of them. I don't know if either of these thoughts are the reason why I still have a gnat problem. All I know is that I'm still embarrassed about the flies hovering around my plants in my home and office--but at least there are fewer of them.

  5. Had a nasty infestation of fungus gnats on one of my house plants so after a bit of research i figured id try gnatrol. It took about a week to come in so it wasnt exactly a fast delivery but the product definitely works. It took a bit of time for the gnats to be completely eliminated but after a week they were non existent. Also seeing that you will only need a couple tablespoons per gallon its a great bargain

5 comments about PowerLine Global Power Travel Kit #0900-27.
  1. The design of this product is sadly lacking.

First - the voltage converter plugs into a module that then has the correct pin arrangement to plug into the wall. In practice the weight of the voltage converter causes it to dangle at an angle which obscures the other electrical outlets on the box & also tends to make it susceptible to inadvertent disconnection.

Secondly and most sadly - the heat dissipation features are sadly ineffective. The converter can get very hot. I used mine in Korea and the outcome was that it completely overheated (on the 50 watt setting) after a week. The external case "bubbled" from the heat and the internal circuitry failed. This was a brand new converter purchased specifically for this trip.

Thirdly - the documentation is poor. There is a strong warning that the higher (1500 watt) setting should not be used for "electronics". It is unclear in my mind if this includes top computers which have a step down ac to dc converter between the plug and the computer. I ran mine only on the low setting because I did not want to scorch my computer. The 50 watt setting is insufficient for the computer to work properly and the result in a constant cycling between the battery and the external power. the screen flickered and so I turned it off and did not use external power to operate it anymore. This may mean that I am just too stupid to understand that the 1500 watt setting will not harm a computer but I did not want to take a chance on being even more stupid. The major reason I had purchased this equipment was so that I could use my computer overseas and I did not trust it enough to do that.

spend the money on a better product.

  2. This is THE worst piece of item I have ever purchased. Followed all instructions, but still blowed up (started smooking) on first use. The worst part is, it damaged my son's much needed nebulizer machine which I had to replace from out of pocket. Thank goodness I had a hand-held inhaler which my son used while abroad.

  3. I have had this on 1 trip to Switzerland and Germany. I did not use the voltage converter, only the plugs. The adapters worked great, although trying to figure which ones you need so you only pack the correct ones is not easy, the "manual" in the package is no help. The plastic case is cheap and broke while in my suitcase during the flight over.

If you are looking for just the adapters this is a good value. I can't comment however if the voltage converter works.

  4. This item worked well. It was bulky and a little heavier than I would have liked it to be; but still, it has survived several layovers in O'Hare and that's more than I can say for my suitcase!

  5. We used this on our recent trip to the UK. We visited England, Scotland, Northern Ireland, Ireland, and Wales. We used this at every stop. Hooked a 1600 watt blow dryer, a 1200 watt curling iron and even used it to recharge my camcorded battery. This little unit never gave me the first problem.

5 comments about Pronto Kill Bedbugs And Dust Mites Spray - 10 Oz.
  1. Unlikely extremely negative reviews for other supposed bedbug killers, I can assure you that this stuff kills 'em DEAD. The catch-22 is that they also find it repellant, so they will run away from a sprayed area. The secret to success is spraying a wide area *around* the location with the infestation (a "cordon sanitaire" in military lingo), and THEN go after the bugs themselves. When they try to flee, they will run up against the chemical barrier you laid down first.

Del Pharmaceuticals sells a 6 ounce can of what they call "Pronto Plus" for six bucks. As far as I have been able to determine, this is exactly the same product as 10 ounce "Pronto," but at nearly twice the price. The problem I ran into with plain "Pronto" is that the last couple of ounces wouldn't spray out of the can, so I effectively had 8 ounces of usable insecticide.

I have tried regular ant & roach sprays on these d___d critters and they do NOT work -- bedbugs have a different physiology (and a grotesque life cycle - look 'em up on the net; there's at least one full web site dedicated just to them -- Cimex lectularius is their scientific name).

READ THE LABEL DIRECTIONS CAREFULLY! Spray and leave the room while it works its mojo to avoid poisoning yourself.

The bad news about Pronto is that however much you buy, you'll always discover that you need at least two extra cans, so buy it in quantity. I have not found its claim to be lingering to be quite true: you'll slaughter dozens of the things with the first spraying, but you must repeat the spraying every few days to guarantee that you have killed all of the little vermin. On furniture, use your eyes to look for tiny pinpoints moving across fabric -- those are nymphs and they, too can suck your blood. Scoop 'em up and dump them into the toilet. The good news is that bedbugs apparently cannot swim at all, unlike roaches and other insects. If you see a live one crawling on a piece of paper, gently lift the paper and keep turning it so the bedbug stays on top (they have a powerful grip); then flick it directly into your toilet bowl. More bad news is that they can live for up to 140 days without feeding (starvation actually EXTENDS their lifespan!), so keep extra cans handy for future eruptions. The tiny transparent bugs you may see when you have a bedbug infestation ARE bedbugs -- just ones which haven't sucked up your blood to fill their grotesque bellies -- kill them without mercy. (Sorry, Gandhi!)

If you have the vermin in your carpet, get a vacuum cleaner which filters particles through water, or use a steam cleaner to get rid of them. If you have a lot of books, just assume that the bed bugs are within the spines or under the covers, or inside the dust jacket, so just vacuum the bejeezus out of all of your books (on LOW, or you'll rip the pages or damage the binding). Speaking of vacuum cleaners, if you don't have one which uses a water filtering system and can't use steam (on books, for example), then TRY to get a vacuum cleaner with a multi-stage HEPA filter to keep from spraying minute bug bits into the air -- these can trigger severe allergic reactions in some people.

Other useful devices are hair dryers -- the vermin dehydrate and die at about 120 degrees F or thereabouts, and hot tumble dryers -- half an hour in that should kill any in your clothing and bedding. (They LOVE to hide during the day -- under fitted sheets, inside pillow cases, in you school backpack, in your pants pockets, etc. If you don't stop them quickly, they will over-run your whole home.)

    C. lectularius CANNOT swim. If a bedbug gets onto your skin, first try to gently shake it off into a toilet bowl, or scoop it up (gently!) with a piece of paper and dump it in the toilet (make sure it hits the water!). If possible, just thrust the whole area where the bedbug is under a powerful stream of water, as in a shower or a high-pressure kitchen or bathroom faucet. DO NOT GRAB A BEDBUG WHICH IS ON YOUR SKIN!!!!! These things are EXTREMELY vicious and will ACTIVELY defend themselves instead of running away. Yanking at a bedbug crawling on your skin is an invitation to it to bite you and hold on until it dies, and it WILL make you bleed. Bedbug bites are VERY slow to heal, and if one's sucked your blood for a while, the itchy mark it leaves behind may last two or three months (maybe longer).

If you develop a histamine reaction (localized swelling) take as much benadryl or vistoril (hydroxizine) as your doctor will allow -- it reduces the swelling and stops the itching for hours if you take a large dose. DO NOT (!!!) drive or operate machinery if you are taking an antihistamine. If you develop a pronounced allergic reaction (hives, difficult breathing, etc.) call 9-1-1 or go to a hospital emergency room IMMEDIATELY -- allergic reactions can cause shock and even death.

It is highly advisable to use a HEPA air filter in any room with bedbugs or mites to remove their feces and other nastiness from the air. (I use a Holmes Model HAP 240.) DO NOT get one of those silent, "ionic air cleaners" such as the Sharper Image sells -- they are all but completely useless; get something with a HEPA filter and make sure it's big enough for the room you want to refresh. DO change the filter regularly, especially if anyone in the dwelling smokes (tobacco, weed, whatever -- the air filter will clean the tiny pollution particles out of the air as long as it's kept clean and happy).

One technique you might try ONLY IF THERE IS NO SMOKER AROUND, NOR ANY CHILDREN OR PETS (!!!!) is to drench an infested piece of furniture with isopropyl rubbing alcohol of at least 70% strength. Isopropyl alcohol kills almost every living thing, so if you can alternate that with Pronto you can help to prevent resistant strains of the devils from developing.

Bedbugs have anal (Cloacal?) glands whic release a pungent stench like a stink bug. If you smell something like formaldehyde in a part of your home or office, it's a safe bet that there are bedbugs present.

Now for the good news: bedbugs CANNOT crawl up smooth surfaces like glass or stainless steel, so major appliances are an obstacle to them, walls and furniture ARE NOT. Another obstacle to them is petroleum jelly (one of Pronto's ingredients is a petroleum product). Smearing the legs of tables and chairs with petrolatum creates a barrier which they don't like and have difficulty crossing. (A 99 cent store brand is just as good as a $3 jar of Vaseline for this purpose.) If you have chairs and tables which won't be damaged by water (resin chairs, for example), you can put the legs in a shallow saucer or pie pan of water -- once again, bedbugs can't swim, so they can't reach the furniture itself.

The best news of all? Despite the huge number of horrible disease which blood sucking insects can transmit, BEDBUGS DO NOT SEEM TO TRANSMIT *ANY* DISEASES TO HUMANS! (But they CAN trigger allergies.) If you're bitten, I'd recommend a tetanus booster and keeping the bite covered with an antiseptic cream (most of which also contain petrolatum, so you're not only protecting yourself from bacteria in the environment, you're keeping the bedbug from returning to a proven feeding ground).

I hope this has helped you, gentle reader. I have studied the little monsters and even let myself be used as a human guinea pig ( ... ah ... "volunteer research subject"), so I know a lot about the damned things, and the more that are killed, the better off we'll all be, sez I. (Sorry, Dalai Lama -- pray for me.) If you get your Pronto *pronto* and start slaughtering the things before they can spread, you will probably escape the need for a professional exterminator who will charge you hundreds (or thousands) of dollars to spray ... pretty much the same ingredients which are in Pronto, just a whole lot more of it.

****** Pronto earns six stars out of five! Long live Pronto! DEATH TO ALL BEDBUGS! ******

  2. I don't know what purpose bedbugs serve in the grand scheme of things, but this product will snuff out the lives of those ruining your personal grand scheme. I haven't had time to deal with my bedbug problem fully, and I have sprayed the perimiter of my room, the doorjambs and threshholds, and the legs of my bed, and have managed (knock wood) to keep them corralled in the interim.

And I have found dead bugs around the legs of my bed, so it's working.

  3. I was being eaten alive by a sudden infestation of fleas and bedbugs. My comforter was so filled with bugs and eggs I threw it away but I used both Pronto and Steri-Fab on my pillows, mattress and box spring. There is no petroleum odor associated with either product. Just spray in a well-ventilated area and let them air out through the day and you can sleep on them that same night. I've had no skin irritation from using these products and my nasty infestation is gone! Good products if you're unlucky enough to need them.

  4. Spot on it does kill them, takes seconds if you spray them directly. However, my only dissapointment is that I was looking for more of a fogger that would cover all areas. Instead I needed to do a little more work and go from area to area and spray. This stuff is strong smelling so yes you prob need to do this a couple of times to up your chances of really getting the eggs and the adults. Order many bottles, best to have them on hand than risk new eggs hatching cause you missed them orginally.

  5. It required two sprays to get rid of the bugs Good price for product but shipping costed same as product

5 comments about Xantrex Technologies XPower Pocket Mobile Power Source 175-Watt Inverter #813-0291.
  1. This inverter is usually OK for powering my laptop inside my car, but if I don't keep the screen brightness set very low, my wireless card turned off, and my computer set in "power saver" mode (a Vista thing), then my touchpad goes buggy after a while, and movement becomes erratic. Also, the strain of having my computer plugged in while the battery tries to charge is simply too much for this small unit, so I must either charge the battery before use, or remove it prior to use in order to prevent shutoff.

While the small amount of power provided limits this inverter's range of useful applications, its tiny size and affordable price tag make it desirable for lighter tasks, such as powering a cell-phone charger inside one's vehicle or plugging in smaller electronics, such as a battery charger, DS charger, PSP charger, etc.

The biggest advantage (IMO) that this inverter has over comparable inverters is that this unit has low voltage shutoff to prevent battery drain, and a simple indicator light to tell you whether everything is OK (blue light) or if something is wrong (red light)

  2. Unit has the juice to power the wife's laptop and the kids' DVD player though I got nothing out of the USB plug even when everything else was unplugged.

  3. This product works good. I have used it only once so far. The price is acceptable too.

  4. Did the job! Four seven hour days powering laptop in car. Only complaint, power light not visible in daylight.

  5. Xantrex Technologies XPower Pocket Mobile Power Source 175-Watt Inverter #813-0291 It totally pooped out and failed after only a few months occasional use. It worked fairly well on some things like 85 watt curling iron and cellphone charger. It would recharge the laptop but struggled to power the laptop if the laptop battery was low. This despite the very low power demand rating on the laptop.

Recently on a long trip it just wouldn't work any more. We looked it over, tried a different cord on it, and it wouldn't respond. Forgetting it had a one year warranty and having no room for dysfunctional stuff, we tossed it in the trash. Rats!

We are shopping for a 400 or 500 watt inverter now. This one was marginal for our laptop and we need to be able to count on the inverter for the things we need it for. I wouldn't recommend this tiny device.

4 comments about Black & Decker Dual-Line Replacement Spool .080-Inch #DF-080.
  1. This spool is a snap to replace. Since it is designed for non-bump models of trimmers you do have to be cautious of accidently bumping the bottom on the ground. If used right you will be thankful for not having to deal with spring loaded spool replacements older bump models had.

  2. I had a Grass Hog 600. It broke 4 times during the 2 yr warranty and used .065 line which is small. I got a good deal on a Grass Hog 1000 because next time the GH600 broke it was out of warranty and history.

The GH10000 is a far superior product in reliability, and cutting ability. It uses .080 line which is heavier for more cutting ability of larger weeds but it is wound in 2 parts and so unlike the GH600, it is really difficult for me to wind the spools using bulk line.

The picture accompanying this item is incorrect. It shows a different spool. These spools are genuine B&D , Black spool with Green line. These are a good buy especially if you get several at a time to offset shipping cost.

  3. I replaced my old GH-600 with the 1000 model. It does cut a line like the Panama Canal, but it is hard to replace the line and I can't even get thru my back and front yard with 1 spool!I am going to find a different model to use, as I can't afford 2 spools a week on my yard. And we're not talking about anything but an average sized lawn.

  4. There's not much to say about this replacement spool. It is easy to install (no tools required), it feeds line automatically and does the job. What more more can you ask for in a product?

5 comments about Hound Dog Products Turf Hound Aerator #HDP3-8.
  1. This turf hound works pretty good. The only problems i had was when using it on hard soil-the dirt and grass gets plugged up in the tubes...Keep a long screw driver handy to un-plug them.It did work really good on medium hard to soft soils.

  2. Very durable product, works well. I'm tall, 6'3'' and it would be great if they had the product in an extra long version. It's relaxing to use it just takes time to get the yard finished. We don't have a huge yard so it its not to bad.

  3. My Turf Hound Aerator was purchased in Feb. 2008. I waited until after the rainy season to aerate my lawns in April and May. Very easy to use: grab the top handle and step on the bottom crossbar to punch holes in the lawn (with the two sharpened tubes on the bottom). That facilitates air, water, and fertilizer to reach the root systems for greener lawns.

Some things I've noticed (as have others):

Works best in semi-moist soil. Too dry and cutting becomes difficult; too wet and the soil plugs get stuck and don't come out the top of the tubes.

Try to step in the middle of the crossbar so the cutting tubes are perpendicular to the ground for even holes, less bending of the sharpened ends of the tubes, and less clogging.

When the sharpened ends of the tubes get bent, the soil plugs don't come out. Simple solution: don't try to pry out the stuck plugs with a screw driver, that may roughen the inside of the tubes or bend the cutting edges. Rinsing with water doesn't push out the stuck plugs either. Rather, go to a patch of lawn with slightly moist soil, step a few times and the moist plugs are pushed out. Now turn the aerator over and tap on the crossbar with a rubber mallet to get the remaining soil plugs out.

When the sharpened ends do get bent from tough soil/grass/rocks, I use an 10" old steel tubing just slightly smaller in diameter than the cutting tubes and tap it through the top with a rubber mallet. That straightens out the bent edges somewhat uniformly.

The Turf Hound Aerator does have a lifetime exchange guarantee so one can get a replacement at the cost of shipping it back to the manufacturer.

One last note: I DON'T leave the extruded soil plugs in my front lawns because they resemble dog doodoo and some thoughtless neighbors may mistake them as an invitation to use my front lawns as a pet porta-potty.

Check out my lawn in the customer submitted pics. Good Luck!

  4. Does what it does well, but it is a labor intensive tool and other, more expensive, solutions exist.

  5. I found the Hound Dog easy to use. It is easiest to use when the ground is moist. We have a large yard so I did a small section each morning until the entire yard was aerated. We started to notice improvements in our lawn's appearance within a few weeks. I would definitely recommend this product.

5 comments about Blue Max Wheel Kit For 4,000 Watt Generator #3359.
  1. When I read some reviews on this product before I bought it, I was a bit concerned as some said they could not figure out how to install the wheel assembly. I felt that it was very easy to add them to my generator. I had no problems at all.It took maybe 20 minutes to put them on, that's it.

  2. Overall, good quality. The one issue I had was that the handle is designed for a round frame, while my generator has a square tubing frame. Had to do a bit of fiddling to get it to work. I can't believe the tiny little wheels on this actually have air valves !

  3. As other reviews mentioned, the instructions are not very useful (just read the schema). Once you have figured out that you need to remove the pads of the generator to setup the new longer ones on front and the wheels on the back it works.
I recommend mounting the kit before the first use of the generator since it is much more easy with the generator upside down. The painting on the screws makes it hard to fit the nuts but overall this does the job. It looks like the adjustments are pretty random and your experience in mounting this kit may vary. It took me about 30-45 minutes to get the wheels on the generator and good to go.

  4. I applied the wheel kit to an ETQ 4000 watt generator. With a few slight mods to the frame it fit perfectly.

  5. Doesn't fit well on my Blue Max 4000W generator. Motor mounts are in the way so the rear axle is offset, and it interferes with mounting the front feet. The threads on the front feet are painted and cross-threaded the bolt. I wish I had just bought a generator with the wheels pre-installed!
