  1. This book is just what you would expect from the guys at This Old House. It includes tips and how-to advice on a wide range of common household problems. The emphasis is not only on repair, but on maintenance and prevention of problems. This book serves as advisory tool for those of us who can't afford to call a professional for every small household problem.

  1. This book i chose to read speaks about masonry and concrete. Masonry is a part of construction that i was always interested in because it has somthing to do with building. This book helped me out alot because it spoked about the aspects of masonry and concrete. This book will tell you about how to mix mortar and is also known as concrete. Concrete is mixed with water and sand and dry cement. This mixer has to be at a cetain amout of ingredients to be a well mix. When the mix is done then the laying brick proccess can be done. Masons should be able to lay the bricks to the line that they use to keep the bricks straight and leveled. When they are done laying to the line they have to use the modular ruler to make sure that it is levled and that the joints are at a 3/8'.

  1. I initially borrowed this book from the library when I began remodeling our kitchen. After referring to the book daily for about four weeks, I figured it was time to add this book to my library.

This is a well-organized manual for the "do-it-yourselfer" who has a basic understanding of homeowner skills. Narrative and illustrations work well together to provide the reader with a good understanding of the tasks, skills, materials and tools needed to complete each task.

  1. This book was recommended to me after numerous attempts to become "mistress of my domain" failed. It is so well done I plan to pass the word along to all of my home challenged friends. Fantastic in every way, particularly in the extraordinary way in which it is written.

  2. Mr.Warren and Ms. Craig have accomplished something no one else ever has in this really wonderful publication. Many thanks to a couple in perfect harmony!

  3. The coupling of Mr. Warren and Ms. Craig is casting genius! Never before has the usual dry home repair industry had such a sharp, sophisticated, and witty voice. This completely charming and easy-to-understand book has, undoubtedly drawn numerous women, such as myself, to an area which until now was perceived as forbidden. Three cheers!

  4. I was looking for a book that tells you how to prevent bad things from happening- a recommended schedule of maintenance for my home. This book tells you how to handle problems after they have happened. I get the impression that they want you to buy the book, figure out that you have no idea how to fix your problem, then look to see if there's a "Rent-a-Husband" franchise in your city.

  5. Truly helpful and a joyous reading experience.

  1. Of all the home repair books I have read or purchased, this is by far the best. The repairs are practical and useful as well as easily explained. Having this book in the house makes for an easy referance either before, during or after a repair situation!

  1. I found this book to be very helpful when faced with a leaky faucet and a defective oven heating element. It is simply written and easy to understand. The illustrations are especially helpful and clear. This book is a wonderful reference and makes a great gift for all occasions.

  2. This book isn't as comprehensive as I would have wanted. The information is basic and geared towards someone who has never held a screwdriver in her life. Although the repairs she reviews are thorough, I was hoping for something that focuses on more complex issues.

  3. I got this book from a relative for Christmas and since then I've actually known what a hammer was for! Up until then I was using it to tenderize meat for my big guy (he beat me up when he found out I used his hammer this way - dummy me). Anyway, now my small woman - sized brain can almost - almost - understand the things that men do. I feel so much closer to being human now, though I would never let on to my mas..., er, husband. I'm sure that's what the author had in mind. After all, she must know what it feels like to be a woman, too.

  4. I thought this book was fantastic! I like to consider myself "handyman challenged", but with this book, I actually took apart a sink drain and put it back together! Correctly and working I might add.

This book has lots of tips and tricks for basic maintenance and household repairs. It describes what you need to do step by step.

  5. Well, this is the deal here. I didn't order this book, but when it came I kept it because it looked interesting. It was, I guess. The information is simple and easy-to-grasp. I am somewhat offended by the implication that women need special books written in 5th grade language to accomplish tasks around the home that must be easy for men. Something wrong with that thinking. Nevertheless, the book is in my repairs reference section of the bookcase in case I need a quick look sometime.

  1. Morris and James Carey saved my sanity, my wallet, and quite possibly my marriage with their book "Home Remodeling for Dummies"! There are very few things in life more stressful than a remodel, but this book helped me put the stress where it belonged- on everyone else! I learned how to plan the addition for my twins room from concept to sunset, and I learned how to deal with a contractor and a budget. Keeping both of those on the same path as our vision of our remodel was a feat I wouldn't have been able to accomplish without the advice from this book. I never would have even attempted this project without the encouragement and confidence I gained from reading it- thus the "5 STAR" recomendation I give "Home Remodeling for Dummies".

  2. THANKS FOR ABSOLUTELY NOTHING!!!!! Book claims in the description to have loads of charts and step by step instructions for remodeling .
Personally i do not consider an example of a contract to be an example.

Like in the section about replacing windows, now there is where a diagram is needed.
Yes i may have been a sucker for buying the book, but the dummies are definitely the authors !!!!

  1. This book is wonderful and especially if you have a house which is not so old but needs little work here and there. I got a copy from my friend and use it all the time. But sometimes it needs little courage to use this book and expertise in tool handling. I will rate this book better than the Time Life books specially for the brave ones.

  2. I found the book excellent for the average home owner. I recently attended his talk in the Pullman Historic District and I found it very informative and got many of my questions answered. Being an owner of a historic Pullman rowhouse built in 1881, I knew it needed special attention then what was being advertised by just regular contractors. Once a resident of Palos, I love old homes and I'm glad I have moved to Pullman and can be a part of the restoration. Thank you for coming to Chicago!

  1. Great book I would recommend it to all homeowners.

  2. The book is great...easy to follow...tells you everything you need to know about anything regarding the home. My husband loved it!!!

  3. This was purchased as a gift but looking through the book, it seems it will be helpful for the new do-it-your-selfer.

  4. Bought this item as a gift for my BF after researching a lot of home improvement books and it was a winner. It has a lot of different projects than you would find in other home improvement books (IE the Reader's Digest books, as they just keep updating the original version and not adding much new info.) He has already used it to do a few household repairs and it was right on!

  5. This book has clear illustrations go to along with their directions for basic home improvement and repair needs. There is a large variety of information available in this book and has so far helped me with electric work and tile work. When it came time to call a professional, I felt better informed for the discussion of what I wanted for my house.
