5 comments about Step-by-step to a Classic Fireplace Mantel.
  1. We just completed our fireplace mantle construction using the techniques outlined in this book, and I must say I'm thrilled with the outcome. A detailed layout guideline, what to measure and how, and what to buy made the project come together more effectively. Although a fairly complete woodworking shop will be needed to complete your project, the instructions and closeup pictures will aid even a novice in reaching the ultimate goal of an attractive centerpiece of the home to be admired for years to come.

  2. this book cleared up a lot of questions i had about building a mantel.written clearly so that most anyone could understand the sequence to get a very professional job.this was money well spent.

  3. Great instructional book for building a traditional style fireplace surround (title a bit misleading - the mantel is only the shelf above a fireplace - the surround is the mantel, columns, etc.) Limited, though in that it only covers one style surround with different variations.

If you like the style of fireplace surround on the cover of the book, then buy it. It steps you through building that style in "great" detail.

  4. This is a very good book with some basic designs. If you are a beginning woodworker or have some basic tools, you can build one of these. As pointed out, the design is simple, but it is flexible and you can customize your own design. I build a surround from stain grade birch with pine trim and moulding. It was finally painted white and primed. We are very happy. I give the book 4 stars, ...

  5. If you are fairly new to woodworking and need a mantle, this is the book for you. I just finished our mantle and it looks great. All the materials used in the book can be found at Lowes or Home Depot and the entire mantle and surround cost me around $85. It does call for a table saw, biscuit joiner, brad nailer and miter saw, but if you are wanting to get serious about building, you will need these tools anyway. This book will lead you through every step so there are no questions. Save yourself $200-300 and buy this book and build it yourself!

  1. A MUST resource guide for all nurses who work in the Home Health industry.

  2. i had the early verison and used it for making my care plan. the content is now updated and still valuable.

  3. I have the 4th edition (at this time is the most recent edition in print) and as a psych home care nurse, this little, portable wealth of knowledge has helped me validate to management, as well as to public health and other surveyors, the range in situations that qualify "homebound status" for psychiatric patients. Throughout the book there are samples provided to support a variety of situations that help the nurse better understand, and therefore more accurately report, on each sector of the OASIS forms. Medicare regulations are explained in detail, and I learned information that I had not known in the 14 years I have been doing mental health home care nursing. The manual provides a history and background of homecare, its evolution, provides an overview of documentaion, including the importance of coding, and its significance in home care. Also, valuable tips on improving the nursing visit, setting achievable goals, managing the case, and the guidelines for care for all the home care disciplines, are provided, so the nurse can be knowledgable regarding the roles of the other disciplines. There is a great resource section at the end of the book, and home care definitions, roles, and abbreviations are delineated in this manual as well. All home care codes are listed.

With the often-confusing regulations and data gathering tools out there, at least we on the front lines have this portable manual to help us sort out our assessments and evaluations into the accurate coding and leveling criteria that supports what we do, what we observe, and allows for the appropriate revenue to support the levels of care our patients require. As OASIS data-gathering evolves, newer editions will be needed to keep up with the miriad of changes that will ensue, but at least here is a standard we can all make good use of, and I am willing to bet every nurse, from novice to manager, will find something in this manual that was not known or delineated as well to them in the past.

This manual would also make a wonderful teaching tool for nursing students. They may as well learn early on how intricate the data-gathering tools are in the real working world. Accurate notations on the OASIS forms can either make or break a case, not only regarding reimbursement, but as to whether the levels of care, and variety of disciplines, that you feel are needed, are allowed to provide services to your patient. Hasty and inaccurate translation of evaluations and assessments onto the OASIS forms results in inability to justify to Medicare that the levels of intervention you are requesting are appropriate.

  4. I love this book because, being in the home health industry you have to know what you're charting. If charting is lacking then you will not get the full reimbursement that you are entitled to. Thanks alot.

  5. This book was recieved quickly. I founds the book to be very informative and useful. I found the answers to several of my questions I had. I will keep the book close to use for a reference and I am sure I will use it a lot. Thanks.

5 comments about The Carbon Buster's Home Energy Handbook: Slowing Climate Change and Saving Money.
  1. Godo Stoyke is a true master of bringing carbon reduction strategies into the hands of the everyday person. Backed by rigorous research, each suggestion in the book is worthy of consideration and completely achievable. Most professionals within the "green" technology industry are aware that market appeal lies in the wallet; to this effect, Mr. Stoyke has infused the book with money-saving tips that provide significant returns. Such an appeal will lead to implementable steps at reducing one's carbon footprint whilst being rewarded economically for sound decision making.

Due to this implementable nature, the book will appeal greatly to a wide audience, from the environmentally-aware to the fiscally-conservative.

Checking up on Carbon Busters (the research organization which Mr. Stoyke is a partner in) it is clear that professional accuracy is well within their means. I take heart in this, due to the wide proliferation of relatively ballooned perspectives that plague the enviro-informational space.

Bush's energy bill should make this book required reading! How many tons of carbon reduction per person would that initiate?! Likely enough to pull tanks out of the Middle East.

To the author: Well done sir.

  2. This winter's storms made me realize how quickly global warming's impact is escalating. We need common solutions but we also need to do what's right as individuals. What's great about this book is that it walks us through the process and even allows us to save money in the process. Just a handful of the book's simple and almost costless suggestions will save me several hundred dollars a year. And it gives a great perspective on which of the larger investments to undertake, and how they pay back in both dollars and carbon savings. I've already recommended this book to a dozen friends and will be recommending it to more.

It's the best handbook I know for immediate practical steps that any of us can take to save energy.

    (......)

  3. The positivism inherent in the title (The Carbon-buster's Home Energy Handbook) carries through to the text and tables which are dramatically informative and easily understood. Mr. Stoyke has done our planet an enormous service by showing the rest of us how to be kinder to our unique home. This book should be read by every home-owner and potential car-buyer.

  4. A well written guide to reducing carbon output and energy consumption. Home conservation based, without the "sit and shiver in the dark" attitude that we are sick of. These techniques allow you to be environmentally responsible without sacrificing comfort or productivity. Two things readers need to be aware of: 1. Not all measures are applicable to everyone - for instance, if you don't have a natural gas pipe to your house, the high efficiency gas furnace option won't work with propane. 2. Some of the product information is dated and no longer accurate, especially in the automotive areas. But how was the author to know that the Mercedes Smart Car was going to turn into a Daimer Chrysler dud? Don't worry - VW is still making high mileage diesels.
Overall, I say it is a well written book that will not only get us started down the path to a better environment, it should get us well down the road.

  5. This is a good book but it is about as much fun as reading the Dictionary. It's a data book. A reference book of technical data. It has some useful information about energy use in the home. I don't regret that I bought but it didn't turn my crank. Regards, Keith Renick, Peachtree City, Ga.

5 comments about How to Have a 48-Hour Day.
  1. I checked this book out because I'd bought How to Lose 200 Lbs in One Weekend on a friend's recommendation and got a lot out of it. I wasn't just disappointed -- I was amazed at what Aslett considers reasonable in the quest for productivity. If we followed Aslett's guidelines, we'd never stop to chat with a friend, would work through meals even if we were hungry (not that the meals would be worth stopping for -- Aslett considers spice to be "food clutter" and recommends sticking to unspiced food), eschew coffee breaks because lifting that cup to your lips takes time, time, time, rise earlier, work later and generally keep our noses to the grindstone at the expense of relaxation, recreation or pleasure of any kind.

This book reminded me of the old joke about the man who asks his doctor how to extend his life, and the doctor tells him to give up alcohol, women, and rich food. "You won't live longer, but it will seem like an eternity." Aslett may be able to cram forty-eight hours into one day, but what a miserable day it is.

  2. This is one of my favorite time management books. It's written in a straightforward, to the point manner, and focuses on not on cliches, complicated lists or 'feel good' fluff but offers some sound techniques ('be early' and dejunk' being a couple of them) and is interwoven throughout with good values and ethics as well (do right, read the scriptures, taking care of others is one of the most productive things on earth, etc.).

I'll admit I'm still working on incorporating all these principles into my life with more or less success, but think this is one of the best basic expositions of the work ethic and how to have a fulfilling life (hint: you won't get one watching TV every night after work).

I like too that he focuses not just on top tier executives or athletes, but on people from all walks of life showing that everyone can make the most of what they have.

    Recommended.

  3. THIS WAS, AS ALL DON ASLETT BOOKS, VERY GOOD. HOWEVER, IT IS VIRTUALLY (EXCEPT FOR A FEW SENTENCES) THE SAME AS 'DONE'. I READ 'DONE' FIRST, AND ENJOYED IT VERY MUCH. I WAS VERY DISAPPOINTED TO READ THIS BOOK. BOTH BOOKS ARE GOOD BECAUSE THEY ARE THE SAME. TIP: IF YOU READ ONE, DON'T READ THE OTHER.

  4. This was the first of Don Aslett's books I ever read, and it is the book that made me want to read more. It is an easy to read book with plenty of illustrations and it has such a powerful message.

If you follow the advice Aslett presents in this book you will most certainly accomplish more than you ever dreamed possible. There are some things I disagree with. I often wear shirts with button down collars, so I think Aslett maybe goes a bit too far when he suggests not having collars that button down so you can save time getting dressed. However, he makes a great point. Many little things we do each day that take time add up to a lot of time. So, if we learn to cut a minute here and a minute there off of ordinary routines, we will have more minutes for accomplishing our goals.

Besides containing a lot of excellent time management advice, this book is also very motivating. Why Do More is a great chapter if you need convincing that accomplishing more makes you feel better. If you need some motivation, this book will give it to you.

Page 66 has two words on the page in huge font - BE EARLY. The advice and reasons Aslett presents for being early are priceless. Just incorporating this strategy can save you tremendously.

As I said, this was the first of Aslett's books I ever read back in 1996. Since then, I have read it several times when I needed a kick in the pants to get back on the productivity train. I just recently read a couple chapters again to assist with a presentation I was giving and to motivate me to do even more in 2008.

Read this book and then put the strategies to work and you will accomplish more and feel great about getting things done.

As someone else posted, this book was reprinted with the new title "Done."

  5. A solid time management book. Not a lot of fluff. Plain straightforward language from an old farmer and janitor. I'd recommend it to anyone.

Kind of what you'd expect to hear from your grandpa talking to you.

  1. Morris and James Carey saved my sanity, my wallet, and quite possibly my marriage with their book "Home Remodeling for Dummies"! There are very few things in life more stressful than a remodel, but this book helped me put the stress where it belonged- on everyone else! I learned how to plan the addition for my twins room from concept to sunset, and I learned how to deal with a contractor and a budget. Keeping both of those on the same path as our vision of our remodel was a feat I wouldn't have been able to accomplish without the advice from this book. I never would have even attempted this project without the encouragement and confidence I gained from reading it- thus the "5 STAR" recomendation I give "Home Remodeling for Dummies".

  2. THANKS FOR ABSOLUTELY NOTHING!!!!! Book claims in the description to have loads of charts and step by step instructions for remodeling .
Personally i do not consider an example of a contract to be an example.

Like in the section about replacing windows, now there is where a diagram is needed.
Yes i may have been a sucker for buying the book, but the dummies are definitely the authors !!!!

2 comments about Landscape Planning: Practical Techniques for the Home Gardener.
  1. It's so handy to have around. I borrowed from the library, but soon after decided I wanted my own copy. It has great tips for all different landscapes. My favorites are the top ten lists - fastest growing privacy plants, slowest growing, perfect plants for between stepping stones, etc.

I've read several landscape books, and I strongly recommend this one to anyone who plans on landscaping by themselves.

  2. I recently had to educate myself in landscape design (large landscaping job at the house). I looked through many landscaping books, and bought several. This one has turned out to be the best one by far.

There are all sorts of great tips along the way, everything from design do's and don'ts to plant recommendations. But what I most appreciated (and what most other books lacked) was the straightforward walkthrough of how to plan: goals, design, hard landscaping, soft landscaping, and so on. Many so called "landscaping" books are actually just coffee-table books with a lot of pretty pictures but no details on how to come up with a good design. This book really helps you go from zero to a workable landscape design.

When I brought in landscapers to submit bids, I had designs on hand to show them. After looking at them, one gave a sigh of relief and said "oh good, you are way ahead of most people." That's all thanks to this book.
