5 comments about Decorating Small Spaces: Live Large in Any Space (Better Homes & Gardens).
- For me THE GREATEST part of the book are pages 184-190, where you can create a layout of a room with the graph paper and cut outs that are included in the book!
Although the book gave good tips in laymens terms, I didn't really care for some of the pictures. Since I'm a first time homebuyer, most new developments in my area already have great kitchens & baths (stainless steel appliances, jacuzzi tubs, hardwood floors, marble countertops) so I was looking for a little inspiration from pictures in this book that I didn't get.
- There are some good areas in the book, but overall its more about living cluttered not large in any space, much less a small space. For me the book seems to be aimed toward middle America who needs lots of stuff, rather than a peaceful simple abode. To many of the rooms shown have to much 'stuff'.
Very few of the rooms with windows shown have windows that are unblocked and allowing light to bathe the room. Something those of us who live in small cottages know makes for a bright and cheery place. Instead they often have shelves with stuff on them or stuff on the windowsills themselves. What I call dust catchers.
And on page 114 there is a loft style bed for a child yet the child shown is a toddler whom I would never put in a bed almost five feet off the ground. But its a great design for an older child. And there are a few simple and lovely places shown but not enough for my tastes and needs, since I am checking books out not because I want to look at pretty pictures, but because I need some ideas for a place I am planning on building
- I gave this 4 stars on the wealth of large, colorful photos and the ideas you can get from those.
Had to knock off one star for the difficulty of reading the text. Sentences 25 to 35 words long are difficult to digest (and I have a masters degree). The photo captions are grouped together, forcing the eye to jump back and forth trying to see what is being described. Even the picture captions are such dense text that they require re-reading to figure out what the author is saying. By page 100, I'd abandoned the text and just examined the photos.
There are some great ideas to be gleaned from this book. I liked the sliding mirror that revealed a television inset into a bedroom wall. Also great was the hidden storage in stair treads. It's too bad that the text just didn't flow well.
- The book's strong points are the photos and some of the practical tips and ideas. It's not an easy read so I don't see myself reading it again, but I will flip through it from time to time to get ideas from the pictures.
- I think the book is worthwhile...even if just for the photos...in the case of those that have some concept of how to put things together or make those photos come to life. I was inspired by several pictures that I plan to implement. However there may be those who find the book is lacking in detail as to how to create some of the purposed ideas...so in that respect it may be frustrating. The book doesn't focus enough in my opinion on small spaces...as much as it does on being more organized & utilizing creative organizational methods to enhance a space. It appears that some of the rooms could be categorized as medium to large in some cases...so I deducted points for BH&G for not sticking to the main so called objective of the book. Overall I'd recommend the book though...however try finding it on sale to ease your conscience.

1 comments about Facing the Promotional Interview.
- This book and the accompanying cd provide the basis for completing a successful fire department promotion oral assessment board. As a career fire officer hopeful, this manual has given me the insight I have been after to give me an edge on the competition. Mr. Mittendorf goes beyond the known interview guidelines into fine points that he as a fire officer looked for when he was on the evaluation side of the table. I highly recommend this manual to any fire officer hopeful.

1 comments about Independent Energy Guide: Electrical Power for Home, Boat, & RV.
- I met Kevin through his sailboat design. The boat is elegant and simple, just like his energy systems. This book demythologises domestic eletric and gets you to think creatively about being off grid, even partially.
My clients have found the book helpful as they approach sustainable design for their construction projects.

1 comments about HVAC Instant Answers.
- I am not an HVAC expert or technician, but I was looking for a book that would give me enough information to be able to troubleshoot and work on residential and small commercial units.
This book has a TON of information in it. Charts, graphs, photos, and a great deal of in-depth topics related to HVAC. It is probably too deep for the average home-owner, but it does cover a lot of the basics, especially in the heating realm. For air conditioning, it leaves a tad to be desired. I was hoping for more detailed schematics of the wiring of modern A/C units and it doesn't really get into that very much.
I have the Plumbing "Instant Answers" book which is very good (it's the only one I saw that covered how to install natural gas lines!) so I bought this hoping it would be as useful. So far, it remains a good reference tool, but you do need to know a little about HVAC basics to understand it. It's not a Dummy's Guide!
For me, I think it was worth the money and will come in handy the next time I am able to nail down a problem and save hundreds of dollars in technician fees.

5 comments about The Swedish Mauser Rifles (For Collectors Only) (For Collectors Only).
- I purchased a pair of Swedish Mausers (thanks to Boston T. Party's high praise in "Boston's Gun Bible") and needed a no-nonsense reference which would tell me precisely what I needed to know to identify, disassemble, clean and make preparations for restoration, if need be. I like pithy little books--some photos, accurate line drawings, descriptive text, tables. My only disappointment was the lack of loading information--bullets, primers, powders which I might use to duplicate the military loadings. I would buy other volumes in this series.
- This book (and the others in the series) does a great job of providing a lot of specific information related to the Swedish Mauser rifles. There's a ton of info and illustrations detailing the different stocks, hand guards, front/rear sights, barrels, sling swivels, barrel bands, triggers, bolts, etc. The book also sheds some light on the different types of ammunition, accesories (bayonets, slings, etc.), and production methods used to craft these fine rifles.
There's not a lot of history explained, but the book does include lots of production figures and explanations/illustrations for many of the stock cartouches and receiver/barrel markings you're likely to encounter while hunting for Swedes at the local gunshow. The book is also written with a certain degree of redundancy -- the author may, for example, mention why a particular sight was used on a particular rifle in more than one spot so that the reader doesn't need to thumb through the book trying to remember where he/she first saw that information. That's definitely helpful since it lessens the need to read the book cover to cover on the first pass. All in all this is a great book and truly deserves to be in every Swede collector's library.
- If you are really interested in the Swedish Mausers, then this is the book for you. There is not one thing about the Mauser that this book will not tell you. If you are thinking about becoming a collector you had better have this book in your pocket before buying or going to any auctions or shows. That way you will be in charge, instead of having a salesmen try to tell you something that is just not true to sell a gun.
- I've got a Swede M38 that I am going to use as a hunting and competition rifle in Vintage Military matches. This book is a valuable asset to shooting that rifle. Packed with information, photos, history. I think it's the best reference there is.
If you are interested in Swedish Mausers, this is the book. I'm looking for a carbine now with a lot more knowledge than I would have possessed.
My M38 shoots X-ring. It's as good as the Swiss K31 and the sights (front sight blade instead of pyramids), are easier to align. The M38 is up next in shooting doetags. Ought to have an animal down by the end of this month when the season closes.
- Steve Kehaya and Joe Poyer have produced a superb reference book on the Swedish Mausers. I own and shoot a number of these rifles and have found my enjoyment of them enhanced by this exhaustive reference.
This book is a great companion to an earlier book by Doug Bowser entitled NEUTRALITY THROUGH MARKSMANSHIP: A COLLECTOR'S AND SHOOTER'S GUIDE TO SWEDISH ARMY RIFLES 1867-1942 which was published in 1996 and is now difficult to find.
This is a five star book if you're interested in Swedish Mausers.

5 comments about Commercial Refrigeration for Air Conditioning Technicians.
- this book i a very comprehensive and well rounded in the real work workings of referation. I would recomend this book to anyone that is interested in furthing there knowledge in refrigeration field.
- If you are looking to move from air-conditioning to refrigeration service, all the information you need is inside this book!!
- If you've done some HVAC work but find yourself stumped the first time you work on a freezer or frig, then you need this book!. This is a world of oil losses, hard to know line pressures, strange refrigerant valves and controls and head masters, etc. And this book will explain them all to you with lots of plain talk, plain examples, great drawings, and even a cd-rom of animation. And best of all, it has a page of "Rules of Thumb", such as; High Efficieny (seer) condenser splits = 20 degrees and below. And since refrigerant recovery of freezers and frig's are far more common place than HVAC work, it covers several methods of evacuation and recovery. This book has lots of troubleshooting notes and lots of pictures and all the basics of refrigeration from motors, capillarys, TEV'S and defrosters through superheat and critical charging and so much more. I own many hvac books and this one absolutely stands out as a 'must have' book ! Another good book to have when you want to "master" the trade, is Technician's Guide to Refrigeration Systems'by Corinchock. And of course, Troubleshooting and Servicing Modern Air Conditioning and Refrigeration Systems by Tomczyk. Warning that Tomczyk's book is sold as several books, each with a few chapters, so only buy the complete book I mentioned above, else you will have duplicate text.
- the book is well put together and provides well thought out information, as well as being in depth enough to help anyone serious about the HVAC/R trade. I hate spending money for bad books and am happy to recommend this book for purchase. Buy it.
- book not what I anticipated, not much on refrigerated systems, good if you want to learn the overall operation on normal hvac systems. expected much on refrigeration systems, got disapointed, not worth the cost of book.
