  1. As a family contemplating full-time RVing, this was a great first RVing book. It covers everything from what to do with your possessions, equipping your RV, traveling with pets, mini-hobbies, maintaining your RV and so much more! It was an easy read packed full of great advice. You will need a highlighter to keep track of important information. This book will definately go with us on our journey.

  3. I bought several books on full-timing in an RV - and this was the least helpful. While they touch on many topics, none are explored in depth - I learned nothing new from this book. In fact, I felt they kept telling me things that are simply commom sense. For example, in their section about waste water, they don't tell you how to deal w/ frozen waste lines - but they do advise you not flush disposable diapers!

This book was a disappointment - and will be returned.

  4. 90% of what's in this book can be obtained from any of the various first timer websites.

If you never owned a vehicle, went camping (of any form), made or lived on a budget, had to figure out how to get health care while on vacation, cleaned out your closets or bathroom, then you may find this book of use.

So much of the material in this book is very common sense stuff. Out of the 189 pages I did find six sentences that were informative. Unfortunately none of the comments went into details. I had to look elsewhere for details on the comments.

I'd suggest one of the inexpensive used copies if you feel you really need this book.

  5. Some new viewpoints and useful information. Doing the laundry in a trash can enroute? You betcha! Hints for freebie overnights and how to deal with medical issues. I found this book very informative, and it covers many aspects of RV travel.

5 comments about From Defiance to Cooperation: Real Solutions for Transforming the Angry, Defiant, Discouraged Child.
  1. The gist of this book is that if your child is defiant, it must be because you, the parent, is too controlling. Give the child what he wants and quit bugging him.

Um, no. Has this author ever spent any time with a defiant preschooler? If I didn't try to control him somewhat, he'd spend most of his life naked in front of the tv eating cookies. This book was no help at all.

  2. I work with children that have every problem you can imagine and my own issues with one of my own children. It is always the parents that desire to have an outsider "fix" the child, feeling that it is the child who is at fault. Parents that cannot take a good close look in the mirror and embrace the messages that this book exposes and details will miss an opportunity to turn their family around, and really help themselves while helping their child. It is not about blaming but about honesty, and how to correct beliefs and patterns that may have been handed down from old generations that don't work so well in our current life-style. I found the book to be a worthwhile one among other resources to become informed and WORK on all of us.

  3. I found that this book gave me alot of very good advice. I would recomend this book to anyone who has a child that doesn't respond well to disapline, or instructions.

  4. Misleading title. I had to put this book down 1st time I picked it up. You see he told me I was the problem then proceeded to only offer solutions to fix my family. No case studies, no references to previous solutions, no suggestions from immediate help. Nope, ODD children are created by the parents. Hogwash.

I'm sick and tired of "professionals" telling me that my child isn't the one who is bringing in the problem to my family. That it's me and my misguided attempts to thwart his behavior constitute abuse.

Here's how I see it. My child needs help. We need help. We need real tools to quickly deal with his problems so we can get to the other side and start to deal with the complex issues a ODD child creates in the family. The way I see it is if you're here looking for help, your not abusive - you need support. What kind of support is it to be told from the start you're the problem. Your desperate and in need of immediate solutions. Not told to take your wife on a picnic, go to the movies or on vacation. You need suggested actions based on real life scenarios.

Don't buy this book unless you need to be told you're the problem. Which your not. It's not your fault - especially if your here looking for solutions.

  5. As a mental health professional and former classroom teacher, as well as a parent, I do recommend this book. Taylor is an expert in this field. Although this book acknowledges parental frustration, it does not express a lot of sympathy for the struggles of parents, but is very matter of fact - quickly capturing the big picture-systemic approach to the problem. Parents may feel blamed - especially those who are sensitive to feeling shamed and thus are more comfortable seeing their children as the sole problem. But this book shows that it is not parents vs. children - no one side is to blame. This book WILL help take blame OUT of the family dynamic, helping parents and kids to work as a team against the mutual problems in their relationship. Therefore, some parents would be better off using the book as an addition to counseling.
Children are so much more than their brain chemistry. In fact, research now shows that in the nature vs. nurture debate, we now Know that nurture is the most powerful influence on the child's behavior and outcomes. This book will guide parents to the sort of nurture that will bring desired changes. If you are a parent who is courageous and loving enough to examine and change your own behavior - you can be the instrument of healing and hope for your child - and this book will help you do that.

5 comments about Swimming Pools And Spas.
  1. Southern Living's Swimming Pools & Spas is a nicely illustrated and useful reference for those new to swimming pool or spa ownership. Not only does this publication provide useful information to the novice pool owner, the topics range from pool and spa construction, maintenance, repairs and safety. I knew what to expect and what questions to ask before I contracted to have a pool installed at my home after reading this publication. The many photos of a variety of swimming pools was very useful in the design of my pool. Even if you own a pool and want to remodel, this publication is an excellent resource for new ideas and inspirations.

  2. Be aware that this book and the book of the same title published by Southern Living are exactly the same book.

  3. If you want to buy 1 book to take you through everything you need to know about building a pool, this is the book to buy. The book explains all aspects of pool building allowing the reader to understand all aspects of pool construction, front start to finish.

  4. Great 101 book for somebody who just got a pool or is thinking of buying/ building a pool. Will demonstrate the basics and definitely get you pointing the right direction.

As mentioned we are a Miami Swimming Pool Builder / Miami Swimming pool Contractor. And down here there are many Miami Swimming pool Companies who deliver a pool with no instructions only to be back a few months later to replace major components in your Swimming Pool.

  5. Swimming Pools And Spas, which covers building, maintaining and landscaping a pool or spa. From how to choose among different pool or spa options to understanding its mechanical systems and using landscaping to integrate it into a backyard, by including both under one cover, Swimming Pools And Spas provides a much wider-ranging set of discussions than competing titles with narrower focuses - and enable homeowners to contrast and choose between a pool or spa.

5 comments about Windows with Style: Do-it-yourself window treatments.
  1. The ideas in this book are almost laughable. The projects that are shown wouldn't even look good with different fabrics. If you are into lots of ruffles and pouffy things everywhere, then this is for you. If you are into simpler window treatments with exquisite fabrics that complement a room, this isn't for you.

  2. Having bought a new home in the fall, I was desperate for custom window treatment ideas and not interested in the local store offerings. Not having sewn for 25 years, I was cautious about getting in "over my head." This how-to book was full of "doable" ideas. I created shades for a guest bath and two bedrooms and am now working on the master bedroom. My ultimate goal is a newly constructed sunroom and even though the book doesn't seem to contain exactly what I am looking for, it provided me with great practice projects and something to show for it.

  3. I got four books in an effort to teach myself to properly sew drapes and curtains. This particular book was a learning experience in that I don't think that a window treatment could possibly exist that isn't included in here.

This book taught me what everything is called, generally how it's put together, what types of window treatments are best for certain areas, like small windows, or dormers. It was extremely interesting and educational.

I have to say upfront that if you are new to sewing, you will get lost fast in this book. I would say it is good for the intermediate or expert seamstress. There are beautiful color photos of each project, but there are little steps omitted, so it is not a 1-2-3 type of book. However, if you are already a fairly good sewer, you should have no problem with it.

I was impressed by the number of shades, roman, roller, and such that are included in this book. There is also a section on frosting glass and making Shoji screens. There just doesn't seem to be anything left out concerning the windows.

Overall, this book is very worthwhile for the learning experience. And I look forward to using it to make some shades when I am done with my drapes!

  4. Very good resource for just about any kind of window decor you could possibly want.

  5. This book is great! I purchased it because I mainly wanted an easy way to make hobbled roman shades. I found articles on the net that tell you how to make roman shades but I did not feel that they explained the process well enough. So after purchasing this book Windows with Style: Do-it-yourself window treatments, I made the roman shades for my daughters bedroom, living room, and bathroom. It was easy. The calculations were easy to figure out. Every thing will come out right if you can use a ruler and do simple math. The projects can be done with a variety of fabrics. The alternative window projects like the shoji window screen and the hanging window planter are great too. I made the shoji window screen for my zen-themed bedroom and the hanging window planter for my kitchen. This gave me a convenient place to put my herb garden. Although many of the other projects in this book are of no use to me because they are not my style, I feel that I did get what I wanted and more from this book. Five Stars!

1 comments about Four Centuries of American Furniture.
  1. I have 25+ titles dealing with antique furniture and Four Centuries of American Furniture is, in my opinion, in the top three...a true "text book" of American furniture study. In this revised edition, Fitzgerald covers, in great detail, American furniture styles from the earliest settlers through the mid 20th century. Each period is covered in great depth, providing detailed info on the various regional style differences, how each one evolved, which countries influenced American furniture, as well as the many social and economic changes that influenced each style. I highly recommend this book for anyone interested in antique American furniture.

5 comments about The Art of Wood Inlay.
  1. This is a "how to" book on inlay probably best suited to those learning the art. The first 20 pages cover what you need to know to get started. He starts with a discussion of the workspace, safety, woods to use for inlay material, wood grain and how to use it for effect, tools both power and hand, tool sharpening, and patterns--including how to make full sized patterns from those provided in the book. He then goes into the steps required for basic inlay, techniques for making constructs such as a leaf, how to prepare inlay pieces, and finishes with how to repair inlay.

The author then takes you step by step through 24 projects. Each project starts with a materials list, the inlay pattern, instructions on how to make the base item (the finished product less inlay) and finally extensive, detailed instructions on making the inlay. The inlay directions cover grain orientation and the order for performing the inlay.

As an inlay wannabe, I found the book very interesting and quite useful. It has inspired me to try inlay on my next small box project. I give it a 5-star rating!

  2. A good, common sense way to learn how to use different types of woods and other materials for inlay projects. Inlay is a true art form different from intarsia and marquetry and should be approached as such. I thought the author explained the different techniques such as matching wood grain by dying and scorching very well and gives the reader enough confidence to experiment.

  3. I'm new to the art of inlay, and this book ended up being just what I needed to get started. I really enjoyed the excellent photos of finished products.

  4. I have found a lot of needed skills for learning to inlay wood. This book is easy to read, and understand. Good book for someone wanting to learn this art.

  5. This book has some nice patterns and pictures and for that, I give it 2 stars. But for technique on even the basics of how to inlay, I would have given it a 0.

5 comments about Mongolian Cloud Houses: How to Make a Yurt and Live Comfortably.
  1. This book covers all the bases for homemade yurt living. History, how-to construction manual, reference guide, state-of-the-art catalog for all things in world of yurts (ger). Great pictures and graphics; the original nomadic living bible.

  2. Nomadic living in the 21st century can be achieved if your house is flexible and even portable - and MONGOLIAN CLOUD HOUSES: HOW TO MAKE A YURT AND LIVE COMFORTABLE advocates and shows how to construct a yurt using low-cost, natural materials available in either a backyard or wilderness. Step-by-step black and white drawings accompany a yurt history and includes construction alternatives and tips and tricks. A rare 'must' for any interested in alternative do-it-yourself construction.

    Diane C. Donovan
    California Bookwatch

  3. The author provides excellent resources and instruction on building Mongolian style yurts. Though the text is somewhat dated many of the principles are still applicable today. I recommend this book to any beginner interested in constructing this type of nomadic dwelling.

  4. Both the book and the transaction were great. A perfect step by step guide.

  5. Mongolian Cloud Houses: How to Make a Yurt and Live Comfortably If you're into simplicity in dwelling and have a piece of land (your own, or unhindered use of some other property) then Mongolian Cloud Houses by Dan Frank Kuehn may be for you. But please note, if you wish to build a yurt similar to Kuehn's specifications, you will also need to glean a fair amount of natural raw materials from that land, as well as have ample time if you intend to build according to the author's specifications. Although not terribly labor intensive in sheer physical construction, building yurts as Kuehn does requires a fair amount of determined patience (a notion of building that is almost heretical in today's culture of "instant gratification" but was widely accepted practice for centuries and firmly reconstituted by many a counter-cultural self-builder of the 1960's and 70's.) In short, this is not the book for you, if you're seeking to get a yurt erected overnight. (If that's the case, pony-up some hard earned dough and go buy a commercially manufactured yurt. Then also hire/recruit a bunch of warm bodies to assist you. Maybe you'll get the thing up in a week, maybe you won't. This IS the book for you, if 1). You are basically building alone or maybe with some help from a friend. 2). You are short of, or very economical with money. 3). You have abundant free time. 4). You want to live simply in the round and wish to work mostly with materials you can gather or scrounge. And finally, 5) You need to have something warm and comfortable yet nomadic (Because a nylon camping tent as your base camp/wilderness home/extra dwelling space just won't cut it.) As a micro building enthusiast, I admire anyone who creates useful organic dwellings and then shares what they know with others. Especially when that knowledge is shared at a most affordable price. As with all Shelter Publications, this book is chockful of useful information. Kuehn's own hand drawn ilustrations are fabulous. The pics of his yurts and his self-evolution from 1976-2006 are delightful. And Jim Macey's b&w photos of Mongolia are a nice addition. It is a valued addition to my homestead and architectural bookshelf.
