1. I recently found this book in a Recource Center's lobby. I Started reading as I wated for my teen to finish his counseling session. I found this book to be an excellent source of helpful information. I have been searching for my own copy for a week now.

   Why don't any of you " BIG" book stored cary it?????????

3. I thought the book was very informative,it lets a parent look at somethings in a different way and helps with better communication between the parent and the teenager. I thought some things were very helpful and some were a little tough to go with, I still feel some rules of grounding are still old fashion rules but they do work and you need to keep them guided on the right track towards their future.



4. I am a clinical psychologist and have used this (and earlier editions)as a reliable, understandable, and highly useful resource for families that I deal with professionally in my professional practice of over 30 years.



5. Dinkmeyer's parenting books for children and for teens are the best I've used as a parenting expert. The books are easy to understand and put into practice. The parenting principle is based on the "Father of Parenting" - Rudolph Dreikurs. Any book on the use of natural and logical consequences is a spin off of Dreikurs' work. Dr. Don Dinkmeyer was a student of Dreikurs. His books have had great popularity by those who know about parenting counseling.

5 comments about From Defiance to Cooperation: Real Solutions for Transforming the Angry, Defiant, Discouraged Child.

1. The gist of this book is that if your child is defiant, it must be because you, the parent, is too controlling. Give the child what he wants and quit bugging him.
   
   Um, no. Has this author ever spent any time with a defiant preschooler? If I didn't try to control him somewhat, he'd spend most of his life naked in front of the tv eating cookies. This book was no help at all.



2. I work with children that have every problem you can imagine and my own issues with one of my own children. It is always the parents that desire to have an outsider "fix" the child, feeling that it is the child who is at fault. Parents that cannot take a good close look in the mirror and embrace the messages that this book exposes and details will miss an opportunity to turn their family around, and really help themselves while helping their child. It is not about blaming but about honesty, and how to correct beliefs and patterns that may have been handed down from old generations that don't work so well in our current life-style. I found the book to be a worthwhile one among other resources to become informed and WORK on all of us.



3. I found that this book gave me alot of very good advice. I would recomend this book to anyone who has a child that doesn't respond well to disapline, or instructions.



4. Misleading title. I had to put this book down 1st time I picked it up. You see he told me I was the problem then proceeded to only offer solutions to fix my family. No case studies, no references to previous solutions, no suggestions from immediate help. Nope, ODD children are created by the parents. Hogwash.
   
   I'm sick and tired of "professionals" telling me that my child isn't the one who is bringing in the problem to my family. That it's me and my misguided attempts to thwart his behavior constitute abuse.
   
   Here's how I see it. My child needs help. We need help. We need real tools to quickly deal with his problems so we can get to the other side and start to deal with the complex issues a ODD child creates in the family. The way I see it is if you're here looking for help, your not abusive - you need support. What kind of support is it to be told from the start you're the problem. Your desperate and in need of immediate solutions. Not told to take your wife on a picnic, go to the movies or on vacation. You need suggested actions based on real life scenarios.
   
   Don't buy this book unless you need to be told you're the problem. Which your not. It's not your fault - especially if your here looking for solutions.



5. As a mental health professional and former classroom teacher, as well as a parent, I do recommend this book. Taylor is an expert in this field. Although this book acknowledges parental frustration, it does not express a lot of sympathy for the struggles of parents, but is very matter of fact - quickly capturing the big picture-systemic approach to the problem. Parents may feel blamed - especially those who are sensitive to feeling shamed and thus are more comfortable seeing their children as the sole problem. But this book shows that it is not parents vs. children - no one side is to blame. This book WILL help take blame OUT of the family dynamic, helping parents and kids to work as a team against the mutual problems in their relationship. Therefore, some parents would be better off using the book as an addition to counseling.
   Children are so much more than their brain chemistry. In fact, research now shows that in the nature vs. nurture debate, we now Know that nurture is the most powerful influence on the child's behavior and outcomes. This book will guide parents to the sort of nurture that will bring desired changes. If you are a parent who is courageous and loving enough to examine and change your own behavior - you can be the instrument of healing and hope for your child - and this book will help you do that.

1. Grab this book without hesitation!

   I saw the author on the show, "Home Matters" and was instantly motivated to buy this book. When I saw that it was available in both hard- and soft- cover verrsions, my decision was difficult. Usually saving a few bucks on the paperback version of any book means sacrificing quality; thin paper, fewer illustrations, shortened versions. etc.

   When I opted to buy this in the paperback form, I was expecting the usual compromises. I was, joyfully, wrong! This book not only boasts the easy instructions and wonderful pictorials of the hardcover version, it also has wonderful, high quality paper stock rarely found even in hardcover these days. The quality of this book will stand up to years of planning and crafting!




2. I purchased this book 2 years ago. At the time I did not know they sold stencils until I purchased a few stencils on their website along with their video. The book is easy to follow and they give you many ways to incooporate simple stencils. This book encouraged me to create a mural from a small picture and brought out a talent that I never knew existed. Well done. Fantastic pictures with great color which I feel either makes or breaks a simple stencil or a 5 layered stencil. I would highly recommend their book, stencils and their video. If I can learn, anyone can!!!! A+++++



3. I came across this book in my local library and loved it so much I bought a copy for myself. Ms. Buckingham manages to create beautiful trompe l'oeil work with simple techniques that are easy for even the absolute beginner. An added bonus is that her stencils are available online...



4. The projects in this book were well-detailed and gave some good information on composition and layering of stencils. I checked this book out of the library and don't intend on buying it BUT I do recommend it if you like the more folkart type decor. I was looking for something more realistic in floral decor. The trellice project was very cute and would look great with a cottage country look.

1. DO NOT BUY THIS BOOK!!! Measuring only 5.25" x 8.5", ALL DRAWINGS ARE REDUCED TO FIT. THE REPRO IS BELOW NEWSPRINT
   85 LPI QUALITY MAKING THE PRINT AND DRAWINGS ILLEGIBLE. A WASTE OF TIME AND MONEY, EVEN AT THE USED PRICE OF $6.00! SHAMEFUL. IF I COULD RATE LOWER THAN ONE STAR I WOULD.



2. Fortunately I was able to find this in the local library before buying it. The illustrations are unreadable. WAY too small! Find something else.



3. I agree, this book should not be allowed to be sold. A rating of 1 star is way too high. Do not waste your money.



4. This was a very disappointing book. Not only can you not see the pictures very well but I didn't find it very informative. I would not buy this book. It's not worth it.



5. This book is so lacking in information and like all the other reviewers have said, the pictures are horrible. It fails to explain some of the most basic elements.

1. Gary Schroeder has written a book that will be a goldmine of information for anyone who owns a log home that is more than a few years old. Plenty of practical advice for caring for, restoring, and fixing old log homes. He covers a large variety of topics: log home finishes and finish problems and repair, sanding versus waterblasting versus sandblasting, chinking repair and replacement, insect damage, decay . . the list goes on. Amply illustrated, plenty of color, vivid diagrams. And Gary knows his stuff--he also owns Schroeder Log Home Supply, one of the US's top log home supply stores. If you want practical help with how to diagnose log home problems, and fix them, this is the place to start. You will not learn to be a professional chinking applicator by reading the section on chinking, this book is more of a "log home owner's manual," not an encylopedia of log restoration techniques and tools. (Just as a car's owner's manual does not tell you step by step how to rebuild the transmission.)
   
   Disclosure-- Gary's business sells my book, the Log Construction Manual , so he is a customer of mine. I am also a customer of his -- I buy some tools and supplies at Schroeder's. I would guess that for years he's been getting questions from log home owners about how to get rid of carpenter bees, repair decay, seal gaps, and so on, and he's collected his advice and experience in this volume. And that makes it worth owning.

1. The case studies were good examples of using Value Engineering.



2. I purchased it since I would like to understand the background of the topic in-depth. I was rather disappointed about the academic level of the book. Too American, which in my view is, a lot of practical paper-filling cases but lack of real theory.
   
   Not really interesting therefore for my knowledge building



3. This book is full of practical applications of value engineering, including a number of case studies. I found the book very valuable in preparing me for the Value Methodology Practionier (VMP) test that is a part of becoming certified through S.A.V.E. (Society for the Advancement of Value Engineer). Their are other requirements to becoming certified by S.A.V.E. but this book covered a lot of the practical applications necessary. The book also goes through the detailed steps in the value enginnering methodology which is very helpful in understanding how it can be used in everyday applications.

1. I made my first T-day dinner and used many recipes from this book. The Sourdough/Apple stuffing was a huge hit!! As will all WS books, it is a beautiful text. This is truly an entertaining cookbook with decor tips, beverages, and after holiday meals.



2. My step-daughter recommended this book....she is a great cook....and she knows good cook books....so looking forward to serving most of the "Southern Thanksgiving" dishes.
