5 comments about Handbook of Structural Steel Connection Design and Details.
- I am a civil engineer. I have been studying and designing steel structures for years. In Vietnam, this type of structure is not popular, and nobody knows how to make it good, make it beautiful.
The only thing I really want right now is to be the one of the best in area of designing steel structure. So, this book may bring me some good knowledge, some new idea. That's all. I do want more information, like a sample of pages, picture, drawings, what can be included in this book And at the end, I am so sorry about my English. I am not good enough in English.
- Tamboli's connection handbook complements the AISC Connections Manual beautifully. In a clear, easy-to-follow way, it addresses all of the major procedures for connecting structural elements and the philosophy behind them. The handbook uses thoughtful examples and good photos to explain how connections work and are built. The tips it gives, especially for connections to composite members and space trusses, are particularly helpful in practical design. I have never seen a more complete, quality connections manual, and I highly recommend it to anyone wanting to improve their knowledge of the latest connection techniques.
- If you have some basic knowledge of LRFD design and connection. This would be an OK book. It contains so many example in many load cases and connection type. All of them are hot rolled steel or high force connection. In example it dose not tell how to retrive this equation, reference to variables, and how to use this equation.. you only have to guess. If you guess right, then it can be applicable to real construction.
- Had the information I was looking for in braced frame design using the uniform force method. A large portion of the book is dedicated to braced frame connections and truss connections which a resource I was looking for.
- This book is not the in depth resource that it claims to be. Salmon and Johnson's Steel Structures book does a better job teaching connection design.

3 comments about Spanish for the Green Industry.
- I just received this book, have not gotten into it yet, but noticed that the Flashcards and Audio Cassette Tape mentioned in the description, are NOT INCLUDED in the shipment.
Once I get over my resentment I expect I will get a lot out of the workbook, the layout is clear and there are useful topics I did not expect.
- This is an entertaining workbook with lots of pictures, matching exericises, crossword puzzles, multiple choice quizes, and worksheets. The vocabularly is very useful for gardening work. Each chapter has a very good description of some cultural differences between Anglos and Hispanics they might employ as gardeners. It seems like a lot of money to pay for a workbook, but then the subject is quite specialized, and the book is fun to work through. It would be great to have the flashcards advertized with the book, but another reviewer says that neither they nor the advertized audio tapes come with it.
- I needed a book that could quickly help me communicate with hispanic workers. I do speak some spanish, but didn't have the vocabulary necessary for greenhouse workers.
This book didn't help me a lot, but it did make me realize that I am not as dumb as I thought I was. It also made me laugh, with some of the "dialogues" and picto-grams (check out the mierde de gonzo).
Unfortunately, I also thought it was a tad on the racist, or perhaps culturally biased, side. For example, the dialogue about teaching the hispanic worker how to use a riding mower. At the end, the hispanic is screaming for help on the runaway mower. Funny? yes. Appropriate? I think not.
In case you think I'm being hypersensitive, remember that I work with hispanics 6 days a week, in triple digit heat in SC. I have discovered that most Americans I come in contact with through my work are intolerant, if not downright angry, at Hispanics, legal or not. Every day I remind other people that these men and women traveled here, away from their own towns, churches, friends, families, spouses, and sometimes their young children, just to work hard, at a barely living wage in most cases, so they can send money home to support not just their immediate family, but their extended family as well (aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, grandparents & in-laws) Their family is getting better food and a better education because of their sacrifice.
How many of you would do that?
How many of you would spend a year, or more, on a farm in Russia, or China, or Pakistan, so that your children could have better food and a better school? That's right, on a farm where no one speaks your language, treats you like c**p, laughs at you, pays you a LOT less than "their own kind", and are sure your going to steal. No cell phone, no nice house, no cable tv; and you get to share an apt. with your brother, 2 sisters, and a cousin. Oh, yeah, and you have to pay that country $1500 dollars for the privelege.
On the other hand, there are wonderful inserts in this book that spell out how to be more understanding at work with Hispanics, and explain their culture and society and how it affects their work here - either the book was written by a split personality, or their is more than one hand in it.
Buy it used.

5 comments about Joey Green's Amazing Kitchen Cures: 1,150 Ways to Prevent and Cure Common Ailments with Brand-Name Products.
- Joey Green has written several books detailing the most commonplace items in your kitchen, garden, and so forth that you can use for remedies in you health, home repair, and so forth. This book, along the same genre, is not exception. Many of us don't realize what powerful chemicals already lie in many household goods that we possess. This book details some of the most commonplace items such as soap, cooking oil, and other things to repair and restore household items such scratched wooden tables, Milk of Magnesia for acne, etc. Kudos to Joey Green for this book.
- I had seen an ad about this book with some of the remedies listed. I went and bought it just to see what I could find in there. As I started reading it, I saw ones my MOM used.
Say you're cooking and some grease gets on you, try Colgate toothpaste(regular). Canada Dry Ginger Ale is great for upset stomach (generic brand works just as well) for clearing up congestion. There were quite a few old family remedies in this book that I've used before. The author also lists interesting facts about the companies whose products he lists. He also explains in many of the remedies why they work.
The book is really helpful, but don't feel you can only use the brand names he lists. For example, the one about using Canada Dry Ginger Ale - I've used generic brands for years and you will get the same result. The Colgate one - I've used gel types and that works too. I'll probably be going through this book again and again. It's a nice reference for the price :)
I recently picked up another copy for a relative. Her kids found the book and SHE didn't see it again for a week. I didn't realize the kids would be so fascinated with the book. It's really a great way to have kids explore how things work. Again, a great reference.
- It is very similar to other Joey Green book that I purchased in the same order, and I wish I knew that in advance.
- mazing kitchen cures. I think it's a great book. It has helped my son with his son as he cant' afford a doctor visit every time the child gets a minor illness. like a cold. The suggestions really work.
- This book is great! A friend of mine was reading this book at work and I looked at it and was instantly intriged. I had to get my own. So I went to Amazon and got one. I use it when I get sick mostly. I've had family and friends call me and ask how to I get rid of this cold, flu, sore throat and etc. I tell them give me a sec, I get the book and read to them. They say its great too. It really has come in handy and saved me tons of money, because I don't have to go to the doctor for everything. Definately think everyone should own a copy OR get a friend to buy it. LOL

5 comments about American Bungalow Style.
- This book provides preservationists and homeowners alike with valuable information on the architecture and associated style of bungalow homes from the turn of the century through WWII. This is not strictly a history text nor is it strictly a coffee table book. A reader can take pleasure simply from the sheer beauty of the photography -- yet each photograph illustrates important design elements that may be found in bungalow architecture, allowing for careful study. The text, concisely written, provides excellent information on bungalow architecture and furnishings, both from an artistic and social perspective. The book begins with a simple overview of bungalow architecture. It then features photography and detailed text on a number of outstanding bungalow homes in the United States, focusing primarily on those found in California, Chicago, and rarer cases the East Coast. It concludes with a very brief section on currently available Craftsman styled furnishings. As a reference book and style guide, this is an excellent resource that I highly recommended. If you are seeking detailed historic information on Gustave Stickley, the Arts and Crafts Movement, etc., the text is not exhaustive. It is very specific in its scope and presents its subjects quite well -- the American bungalow. If anything, this book is best used to inspire current bungalow owners of the possibilities contained in these remarkable homes
- This has to be one of the best books on art and architecture ever produced. Through hundreds of gorgeous photographs and detailed description, the history and development of the American Arts and Crafts movement comes alive. The author remains sensitive to the fact that most bungalow owners of the early 20th century were not following any set "style," but maintained and decorated their homes according to their personal tastes and means. The result is a presentation which would inspire any current bungalow owners to cherish and preserve their homes as they would works of fine art. In addition, this book contains a handy catalogue appendix listing businesses that deal in reproduction Craftsman style furniture, wallpaper, tiles, fixtures, etc.
- This book defines the Bungalow style, explains how it started and flourished, and tells about the men who built and sold them. Then it takes you into still-existing Bungalows across the USA, where the current owners have preserved the period style. Hundreds of beautiful, full-color photographs showcase these homes and give the reader a good feel for the American Bungalow style. At the end of the book there is a list of suppliers, sources of information, and further reading that I found useful also.
- Wonderful photographs; light, informative reading. What's missing is a better representation of the different regional examples of the bungalow. And they're everywhere.
Residing in the Chicago area, for example, we have a tremendous variety and number of bungalows. Even in Atlanta, a region more famous for its colonial architecture, I noticed that the Virginia Highlands area also had some marvelous examples of the bungalow style. A more appropriate title would be "The California Bungalow" given that nearly all of the examples are located there (and within that state, in Pasadena). In other words, worth getting but not the definitive book.
- If your curious like me to what exactly is a Bungalow, what their history is, and would like to see lots of full colour examples, then I think you will find this book quite satisfying. Being that there where so many Bungalows built over such a wide geographic area, I doubt if anyone has covered every example of them in one book. So you may end up wanting to buy a few other books (which there are lots of good ones) to satisfy your curiosity. Non the less, this book does give you a good example of American and some Canadian Bungalow history, also it explores each room of the Bungalow and the rooms furnishings, all with quite a few excellent photo's.

5 comments about Small Spaces: Good Ideas.
- Of all of the design and architecture books in my library, I have to confess that this is the only one that I have ever read cover to cover. This wonderful book contains 51 gorgeously photographed small living spaces from 150-968 square feet - each one a jewel box of contemporary minimalist design. Here the art of living has been reduced to the basic essentials of ample light, beautiful design, clever storage, and minimal possessions. Each project is sparingly and simply described, with architectural drawings included in most sections. What a joy it is to be immersed in this book, imagining myself as a sophisticated debutante living in the chic apartment in Shepherd's Bush London, or a modern day hermit communing with the Divine in the Itamar Cave in Jerusalem, or an expatriate writer on a long, but fruitful sabbatical at Darmos House in Spain. Ah the joy of the simple life - unfettered by the weight of too many dusty possessions or heavy ornamentation - pure bliss!
- This is a wonderful book to read if you want to imagine yourself living somewhere exotic in an uncluttered space with minimal (or no) possessions.
It's all about design and I'm sure design mavens and architect-groupies will love it.
I picked it up looking for "good ideas" (as advertised in the title) I could use in, or adapt for, my small condo. In my real life as a middle-class working person living in the US. I found none.
Pretty pictures, though, of some inventive solutions to putting bed, bath, kitchen, and sitting facilities into small areas.
- Beautiful, funky and cutting edge interiors. High quality paper. Great reference because it also includes floor plans and elevations. Super cool and a great bargain for such a beautiful book.
- While these sort of books offer lovely, crisp photographs, they contain very few ideas that are realistic when you're on a tight budget...or if you have children and safety is a concern. This book in particular didn't take safety or budget into concern from my perspective.
Martha Stewart has a book geared at storage solutions and organizations that is actually practical and affordable that I have turned to time and time again. Truly, organization is the key to living in a small space successfully.
Your best bet is to save your money on this book and take a peek at something geared toward organization and stylish storage.... and visit your local IKEA for instead. Regardless of your personal style preferences, IKEA stores are set-up in pre-furnished rooms that really let you test their practicality. If you aren't near an IKEA location, IKEA's website has an entire section devoted to design ideas PLUS you can request a FREE catalog that is jam packed with storage solutions and furniture arrangements that are intended to maximize space when it's at a minimum. The objects themselves aren't important when it comes to your personal style, so focus on placement and use of space rather than whether or not you like that particular cabinet or couch and you'll do great. For example, if country is your style--when you find a room layout that you like, just replace the leather mid-century sofa with a fluffy, cotton duck one instead. IKEA has really warmed up their styles lately so I'm sure you'll find something that works for you when browsing their catalogs and website.
I've kept several of the last few IKEA catalogs at a cost of ZERO dollars for color schemes, hints on how to use light and texture, fun with fabrics and furniture arrangement with oodles of storage. Hold onto them because they run out fast.
If you are designing with practicality and comfort in mind but aren't near an IKEA store, I urge you to visit the IKEA website and browse their interactive catalog for hints..then print up a page that inspires you. You won't regret it!
- Pro's
- lots of photos.
- apartments are small, under 90 square meters.
Con's
- this feature where this orange dotted "box" is put insde the pic to mark an area of something "cool" is really not so cool. spoils the book, imo.
Not the best book about small space living and interiors but not bad at all for the price. Three and a half stars.

5 comments about Feng Shui for the Soul (Feng Shui).
- I was so pleased after reading each section of this book. Though it is not a typical feng shui book, it creates a sense of empowerment within the pages that I have not found elsewhere. The author gives several exercises that are both feng shui and manifestation/meditation related. Exercises such as meditating on the spirit of your home and manifesting a "Soul Home." The Soul Home exercise is profound and very spiritually revealing. I would recommend this book for those who are looking for an alternative to the traditional and formula-based feng shui.
- This book opens the world of Medicine Wheel Feng Shui. It emphasizes bringing to one the ancestral wisdom of peoples living close to earth. One can achieve peace and tranquility by undertaking the many meditative exercises the book offers. Not everybody may find it comfortable to dowse in order to activate the intuition regarding the home, or engage in ancient rituals like relating the meat one eats to ingesting a bit of the animal's spirit, yet many are receptive to the simple techniques presented in the book that enable a person to envision a home for the soul, de-clutter the environment and bring harmony and togetherness to members of the family in the house. This Feng Shui is mostly based on Native American traditions embodying the four directions of energy rather than the five elements of the traditional Feng Shui, and appears quite intuitive and minimally regimented in comparison. The book reads easy. It is gratifying to learn that a simple thing like repainting walls an earthy tone and placing a basket of stones on the floor in a dining room can bring a family together and help it complete projects. When the author enters the field of science, however, such as discussing evidence for the Golden Mean, the results leave something to be desired.
- This inspiring book helps you delve into the underlying meaning of 'home' and the connection to your soul. Denise writes "Your home can be much more than a mere shelter and a repository for your belongings. It can be a magical place where dreams are conceived and realised, where relationships grow and blossom, where problems are tackled and solved, where each member of the family can be cherished and honored. Ideally your dwelling is a place you want to come home to, where you invite guests, express yourself and feel nurtured by those you love. Home can be heaven on earth, a refuge for your soul." This lays the ground work for practicing instinctive feng shui which follows follows the belief that there is a place of inner knowing inside each of us, a place that knows what we need in our environment to feel healthy and whole.
- If you feng shui your home Denise Linn's books are a must have. It will take feng shui beyond just the physical and explain how to work with the energies to bring about a sacredness and the change you seek through feng shui. I highly recommend this and any of her books on Feng Shui.
- As an interior designer who has incorporated Feng Shui into her work, I enjoyed this book greatly. I have attended classes with Denise Linn and really enjoy her style.

5 comments about Decorating for Good: A Step-by-Step Guide to Rearranging What You Already Own.
- Carole Talbott has a wonderful sense of design balance for creating homes which feel great.
- I found this book helpful and down to earth. The suggestions regarding room arrangement really work and the rooms do look better. Colour pictures would have been helpful.
- she makes a lot of promises but does not deliver. it is NOT simple to understand, NOT clearly written, and NOT well illisturated.
she does not address the "what if" questions. her formula only seems to work if you already own what she describes and if your room matches her basic shapes. if you are stuck after the first step (placing the sofa in front of the focal point) you are out of luck--because she just rolls on telling you and promising you how everything will come together and make sense. her drawings seem to contradict what she says and make no SENSE.
- I lost my book. boo hoo...I've bought this book a couple of times and I believe it's in the library of people who borrowed it. You must have this book in your library because 1) It gives hands on tips on how to move your furniture around so it forms the nice cozy corners, spaces in a room. Also , most people place their furniture around the room instead of looking at different spaces in a room for the potential to build mini rooms within a room. I think once you understand how to segment a room, you'll enjoy your home more because you'll really begin to see the spatial opportunities in even the smallest of homes. This book helps the artist in you to "see".
- This book is a great help if you are trying to make a room beautiful. It shows you how to arrange your furniture and make the most of what you have. I recommend this highly.

5 comments about KISS Guide to Feng Shui (Keep It Simple Series).
- I found the book to be a little bit boring. I wanted to know how to change my home to fit into the Feng Shui philosophy and it gave me more of a background of Feng Shui. That is great, I am glad I know all of that now, but I didn't find any practical ways to change my home.
- According to this book, my desk is in the wrong place. Although I have no choice, I've noticed I'm more edgy with the door behind me and when someone enters my office, I feel that if I was sitting with my back towards the wall, I would feel more comfortable and in control of my environment. My only problem is having to look at the computer wires, which would annoy me more.
So, I think there is something to be said for furniture placement, when practical.
Being of the thought process that there is something to be learned from everything, you can try to take what you need from this book to help encourage an environment you will feel comfortable in.
The Chapters Include:
What is Feng Shui? - Wind Water, a connection to natural elements. "Flow"
is also an important element. It is not a religion or magic.
Who Does Feng Shui and Why?
A Look at Feng Shui's History
Gods, Graves, and Feng Shui Masters
Ch'i and Alignments
The Building Blocks of Feng Shui
Chinese Cosmology
The Trigrams and the Lo Shu
Feng Shui Inside Your Home
Living Rooms, Dining Rooms and Bedrooms
Bathrooms, Kitchens and Corridors
Business Feng Shui and Color
The Four Celestial Animals
Feng Shui Outside Your Home
Water Dragon Feng Shui
The Feng Shui Garden
The Eight Mansion Formula
Feng Shui Remedies
Symbolic Feng Shui
The East Life/West Life Formula
Time and the Calendar
Heavenly Stems and Earthly Branches
Compass School Feng Shui Tools
Some of the ideas I incorporated into my own home without even knowing they were Feng Shui concepts was the use of mirrors. It does definitely create a feeling of energy in a room that would otherwise feel closed in.
If you are very, very serious about Feng Shui or extremely curious, this book has more than you will ever want to know.
~The Rebecca Review
- The Keep it Simple Series distinguishes itself from other series like the Idiot and Dummie Guides by its extensive use of color and photographs. However, the superior content far outweighs the appealing cosmetics of the book's layout and design. In a nutsell, Stephen Skinner knows what he's talking about. In fact, he's a world renowned expert in the field as well as the author of one of my favorite feng shui books, The Living Earth Manual of Feng Shui. In his KISS book, Stephen provides an excellent overview of what feng shui is and how it can help you maximize your health, wealth, and relationships. It's well-organized and easy to read. Impliment his practical advice and you'll witness first hand feng shui's power. A thousand kow tows Stephen for elevating this Chinese practice! Nice work.
- I'm still trying to get into this book. There is a lot of subject matter with mulitple origins, interpretations and applications of feng shui. Whew! I'm not finding this KISS publication to be that simple. However, lots of info and pictures!
- Whew! Thank you for delivering a book that sets apart the American "New Age" Feng Shui from the Traditional Chinese Feng Shui derived from Science and Math.
Feng Shui is more than rearranging furniture and hanging mirrors. This book delves into the history, the reasoning, common sense, and the scientific.
It explains that BELIEF and CULTURE is the reasoning for hanging bagua mirrors and other remedies-a physical reminder in the home of tradition. Much like wearing a cross pendant is the ever present reminder of Christian faith. It makes no sense at all for people to hang flutes from their ceilings if they don't know why they are doing it-although this book does explain the mythology and reasoning involved.
Far more valuable are the chapters explaining the calculation of your personal Kua number, the use of a Lo Pan, and other Compass School information.
The history detailed makes a nice backdrop for the information, though if you're impatient you can skip it and not be lost when you get to the meat of the book.
I've had this book for years and its served me well as a reference for when I go apartment hunting. I also reference it when designing floor plans for my dream home-a long term hobby of mine.
Great book, laid out well and informative. [..] . I highly recommend KISS Feng Shui as a resource that delivers on scientific feng shui and common sense, while putting "American New Age/Black Hat/Intuitive" Feng Shui in its place.
