3 comments about Cutting-Edge Band Saw Tips & Tricks (Popular Woodworking).
- I already owned Lonnie Bird's and Mak Duginske's books... Sincerely I purchased this because it was coming with a good offer, but on a retrospective I must say that it adds good information to the other books I already owned.
There is not any "purchasing guide" section (I think the best book with such an information is Lonnie Bird's), so it's a book for who already owns and is happy with his bandsaw.
Information are very straightforward, not much talk but many well made pictures with explanatory captions.
There are great information on self construction of a rip fence (including setting it up for blade drift), mitre gauge table (if your saw doesn't have one of those), increasing table size and various other nice jigs for various operations.
It contains a good deal of information on bandsaw joinery, like mortise and tenons (yes, it is the only book where a nice mortising jig, of course for your router, is described), dovetails, lap joints.
Also, template cutting with a bandsaw.
Other techniques on how to lumberize logs, resawing and veneering, also "related" subjects with suggestions on what to do with cut veneers jigs to trim them to precise edges...
It's a book that doesn't take the bandsaw as a stand alone tool but with the interactions with other woodworking tools, ways to make of it the core of your workshop or at least value it to its full potentials.
Also "advanced" techniques, such as building a 3d puzzle, a bowl (I didn't know you could make a bowl with a bandsaw...)
Nice projects are included, I found particularly nice the cabriolet legs-table projects...
Little information on blades (where Duginske's shines), guides (Bird's), but the book has probably a different aim. Bandsaw tune-up is on the other side well done (not nearly well though as Duginske's), with a few nice suggestions.
All with nice pictures and "hot tips" for practical how-to ideas.
All in all I recommend purchasing the book, well, maybe with one of the two other books I mentioned.
- Mostly the same old tricks and tips- although I did get probably $4 worth of tips. I would have rather spent the money on a magazine subscription.
- This is an excellent overall guide book for anyone serious about elevating their woodworking skills through the use of the band saw. The book is chock full of of excellent tips and suggestions with plenty of photos. A great addition to your knowledge base.

4 comments about The Complete Kitchen Cabinetmaker: Shop Drawings and Professional Methods for Designing and Constructing Every Kind of Kitchen and Built-In Cabinet.
- I have years of experience in residential carpentry and furnituremaking, and I've installed dozens of kitchens, but I had never actually made a set of kitchen cabinets. We are renovating our house, and replacing our cheap cabinets is one of the items on the list. I spent hours at my local Barnes and Noble and Borders stores looking for a comprehensive book that focuses exclusively on kitchen cabinetmaking, and couldn't find one out of the dozens of books on cabinemaking that thoroughly covered both the cabinet design and production processes. Then I took a chance and ordered The Complete Kitchen Cabinetmaker, and found exactly what I was looking for.
Lang writes well and, just as important, is a good teacher and explainer. The book is well organized, and the abundant illustrations, both photographs and drawings, are clear and detailed. Measured drawings abound. He describes both general types of cabinet, frameless and face-framed, and lays out efficient production processes for both, indicating where potential problems lurk and the consequences of inaccuracies at crucial points.
This is head and shoulders the best book I have seen on the subject. If you are even considering building your own kitchen cabinets, or starting a small cabinet shop, this book should be your first purchase. It will be the best money you spend on the project.
- I used this book along with _The Complete Cabinet Maker's Reference_ by Jeffrey Piontkowski to build a set of nice garage cabinets. The two books are very different, and, I think, compliment each other well. This book contained information that allowed me to refine the basic cabinets in the other book. I was very pleased with the results! The project would have been much more trouble for me if I hadn't read this book first.
- I'm researching the possibility of making the cabinets for our new home and have found this book to be an excellent resource of information and tips by someone who has "been there and done that". Mr. Lang uses easy to understand language and examples on drawer construction, door construction, case construction and installation. Lots of time-saving tips, too!
A very practical guide that will help anyone with just a little experience making cabinets.
- I purchased this book based on recommendations from Amazon reviews, and because I have the interest to learn more about furniture design and building techniques, basically focused in frameless type of cabinets, and this book covers both face-frame & frameless.
It provides a lot of pictures and drawings of how to layout, design, build, finish, and install face-frame or frameless cabinets.
Bob Lang made this book very easy to understand and I think is a great resource to beginners because of the structure of the book.
The book includes techniques and jigs that are great for cabinet construction. Several aspects of cabinet construction are covered with multiple options for joints, fasteners, materials, attaching doors (hinges), building drawers, etc.

5 comments about Raising a Happy, Unspoiled Child.
- I'm writing this because my daughter has finally turned 3. She is as delightful as what's described in the book. Cheerful, affectionate, curious but able to respect boundaries. I'm a first time mother, and I started reading this book when my daughter was a baby. I found all the instructions and explanation very helpful and easily to apply. It's assuring that Dr. White's advice is based on research and observation of numerous real-life cases, rather than his imagination and personal opinion. This book emphasizes how one stage of a baby/toddler's development can affect the next. It's more a whole-program approach rather than a guide with quick-fix solutions. Those who seek the latter could be disappointed.
- This is an outstanding book that should be read by both expectant parents. It discusses not to raise a child that is how an A student, great athlete, or future world leader, but rather how to raise a student who does well in school, life, and society.
Mr. White interviewed parents from different cultures and child rearing methods and gives the reader straight advise on methods to improve your child's chances for success in their life ahead. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is ready to have their first and also as a re-read to those working on their second, third, etc. A definite must!
- I found the advice in this book appealing (it's much the way I like to do things anyway). I was excited by the research. But I was frustrated because the description of the child's social development does not match my kids at all. My daughter was a delight from 14-24 months - the time frame when she was "supposed" to be testing me. She took direction, minimum tantrums, played well on her own, etc. Around 24 months the testing hit, and we are still in the thick of it (though outsiders tend to call her a "delight" - as mom, I see the testing going on). According to this book, a testing 2 year old is the mark of an overindulged child. But this simply isn't the case with ours. The book "Loosing Our Minds" has alot of interesting and useful information for parents of gifted children. Often gifted children do not develop according to neat little timelines that scientist and baby trainers prefer.
- I bought and used THE FIRST THREE YEARS OF LIFE By Burton L. White during the late 70's! Now I'm
using the new edition of that book, along with RAISING A HAPPY, UNSPOILED CHILD in caring for my grandchildren and the toddler pre-school class I teach. I have never found a better book on caring for young children. It makes it possible to detect new stages and explaines how to deal with the changes in the child's behaviour. So-o-o helpful! I include these books in my gifts to young mothers.
- I bought this book to help me deal with my two year old who was acting up, but the premise of this book is that if you are having problems with you're two year old, you probably screwed them up in the first year and it's too late to really do anything about it. Basically, you're screwed and it's because you spoiled them. Needless to say, this didn't help me. I completely agree with other reviews which said that the author divides children into angels and brats with no in betweens. Not helpful. I wish I would have taken more heed to the bad reviews, because apart from a few decent recomendations, this book was a complete waste of time.

5 comments about Jessica McClintock's Simply Romantic Decorating: Creating Elegance and Intimacy Throughout Your Home.
- Fantastic book. I loved every page. I incorporated her designs and
techniques into my new house. Absolutely love her style.
- Jessica McClintock's Victorian home in San Francisco is a reflection of her Romantic style as a fashion designer. No one can argue that her charming home is beautifully decorated but I found that all the rooms pretty much looked the same. She favors monochromatic color schemes and personally I found the rooms boring after a while when you see the same color scheme page after page. But regardless, the book is beautifully illustrated and she gives tips throughout the book as well as additional information in the back of the book on how to create a Romantic look.
- Jessica Maclintocks book "Simply Romantic" was a pleaure to read. The lady through the picturesque journey of her home, helps the reader to nurture and grow in the sensibility of their own aesthetics. You can learn and absorb what she is trying to teach or can just enjoy and feel the goodness of this beautiful book.An enriching experience.
- This book has beautiful photos; most of which depict neutral tones of ivory, cream and gold decor. The rooms are of Victorian style. There were too many closeup (detail) photos, in my opinion, but the text and helpful diy sections were a nice addition by the author.
- I enjoy this book, lots of ideas, great narrative, I seem to see something new each time I look through it. Just what I was looking for.

4 comments about The Complete Guide to Furniture Styles.
- THE COMPLETE GUIDE TO FURNITURE STYLES is a well written guide to the history of different periods of furniture. It states the history of the period and crucial pieces with a description of the piece. There are very few pictures, so if you are looking for a guide to train your eye to note characteristics of period pieces, this will not help you. If you are looking for a written description of the pieces, this book is for you.
- I have to disagree with the previous reviewer--this book is FILLED with pictures in the back half of the book. The pictures are disappointingly all black and white, but it keeps the cost down I suppose. This is the best resource for visual identification of styles from Egyptian through Twentieth Century that I have seen, and I have seen quite a lot of them. The front half of the book is very detailed information about each of the styles as well as specific pieces within each style. It's not something you can read from cover to cover, as the details would quickly overcome you. But it is a wonderful reference book for anyone who wants to be able to look up a particular style, read about it, and look at many pictures to visually understand general characteristics of the style.
- As a college educator in the history of architecture, furniture and the decorative arts I think the Boger is a very good overall text both to students and interested others. Information on furnitre prior to Gothic is the weakest, and would reccomend other texts to satisfy those needs. Photographic reproduction quality in some instances barely passable.
- A College textbook or reference-type book. Comprehensive--fine print. Seemed a good read, but I didn't like the set-up. All text was in the front, and the examples and photos were grouped in the back. One would need to flip back and forth to view examples of the subject matter. Didn't work for me.
This is the only reason I gave it a low rating, and returned the book.

5 comments about A Roof Cutter's Secrets to Framing the Custom Home.
- I have been in construction for about 5 years, and almost all of the roofs I have worked on are truss roofs. I am interested in getting into roof cutting/stacking, so I have been buying a few books. But this is the only book you need. Everything is explained very well, with a lot of pictures. And he gives a lot of techniques that can be used. The author himself used to be a production roof cutter, one of the best in the business. Out of all the roof framing books, the only other one I have bought that I plan on keeping is the roof framer's bible. It is a very handy little book to have.
- This is the best book currently available on roof cutting. It is enhanced through the authors extensive experience and inspirational passion for his craft. It is written for those who already have an understanding of framing and would like to grow in their knowledge. The layout makes it an easy to use quick reference guide for the particular aspects one might wish to inform themselves about on any given day.
I was impressed and encouraged by Will Holladay after purchasing his book. He showed me the joy, the satisfaction, and the excellence that can be achieved by doing what one was created to do.
- This book really helped me work through some issues I was having with cutting
a complex roof. I don't know if I could have done it otherwise. Beginning framers would also benefit from the book as it offers some advice in that area as well. Be sure you get the Journal of Light Construction edition NOT the edition published by Craftsman Book Company. I don't think there is a better book for advanced roof cutters.
- Very detailed with corresponding illustrations. My favorite construction book out of 10. Covers all variations of complex rafter roofs. Also check out Roof Framer's bible for tables and corresponding math if u hate those construction calculators.
- Well when i got the book i was amazed on the amount of diffrent Roof Framing situations that are in it . Stuff in this book not to many people know how to do. Even if i just use the book once to refer to the 20 i spent on it was worth it ... If you are Into cutting rafters and find the Common Gables and Hips fun to do then you would love this ....

2 comments about How to Talk With Teens About Love, Relationships, & S-E-X: A Guide for Parents.
- This book is highly interesting, informative, organized and educational. The title says the book is a guide for parents, however, I found the book to be most rewarding as a Health Education major. Grandparents, aunts, uncles, and family friends should even get their hands on this book... you never know what questions may pop up about sex and relationships! The book's goal is to break the uneasiness, and sometimes embarassing or awkward moments of educating your children about life's issues. It was extremely easy to understand and very real to life. The authors themselves have their own family so they talk from their hearts as "real" parents. They cover everything from initiating converstion to sexual development and sexual orientation. The Mirons took great concern considering the different lifestyles, beliefs, and morals of each individual circumstance and family. The book has two sections called, "Try This" & "Just the Facts." They provide alternative ideas to aid in the education process and important statistics parents may not know. The book has very few faults and has better prepared me for when I start to teach. It has greatly boosted my confidence level and I am sure to hold onto the book both as a reference and as guidance. Take a look for yourself, I promise you that it will not be a waste of time!
- Whenever the topic of talking about sex and sexuality with our children comes up, I share this title. The book is written for parents (or other adults). Of course it covers sex, but it does also talk about love and relationships and their connection to sex.
Four aspects of this book that are invaluable are:
* It's written to help each adult examine his/her own attitudes about each topic, and to understand those of their partner as well.
*It provides great language for explaining and discussing different aspects of intimacy, sexuality, love, and the like.
*It provides great communication advice that goes well beyond the topic at hand.
*The authors have provided poll data to help parents understand what aspects of sexual knowledge and attitudes have changed with this generation, research findings about STDs, pregnancy, abstinence education--you name it. They don't advocate a particular point of view but they arm the reader with information so that the reader is able to see past his/her own experiences as teens learning about sexuality, sex, and love.
Anyone with a child over age 8 should have this book and start reading it, because you're gonna need it much sooner than you think...

5 comments about Construction Funding: The Process of Real Estate Development, Appraisal, and Finance.
- The third edition of Construction Funding by Nathan S. Collier et al is a remarkable demonstration of insight and expertise. Collier and colleagues provide an exceptionally lucid description and analysis of the process of real estate development that is accessible to non-experts while being authoritative at the same time. In addition to being an excellent text for students and others interested in careers in real estate development, this book serves as essential background for all those whose responsibilities include any part of the development process.
- Very interesting book; very easy to read.
As a small real estate investor I found it very helpful in understanding many of the ins and outs of real estate and financing, especially on the scale i would like to grow to.
- I read construction funding, prematurely perhaps, as one of my first ever real estate books - and I loved it! The book takes the reader through several once-real-life scenarios and explains the construction process step by step. I think that both ambitious beginners and more seasoned loan officers and developers would benefit from reading this book.
- the right book, at the right time, in the right place... dubai
- This isnt a book for someone who wants to dabble in real estate investment. This is a book for big time investors (or people who want to be big time.) It is great if you're looking at large projects like apartment complexes, and it's well written.

5 comments about Let Go of Clutter.
- Got a kid, then you understand the true meaning of the word pandemonium. I bought it for the wife hoping we could figure out how to clean up after "the kid" our 3 y/o son, and organize her accumilated junk(wife's a pack rat). Needless to say, she nor i read it through to the end, but the bit i read was an interesting approach. I still trip over tonka trucks & lego blocks, the insects need a treadmill and the newspaper pile is now a permanent corner structure. Maybe one day I'll finish the book....its a step in the right direction. Buy it.
- Conquer your clutter. Stop being a slave to your stuff. Understand why it's so hard to get rid of things.
What would your life be like if you could accomplish these three things? How much happier would you be? How much more peaceful would your life be? Author Harriet Schechter gives you a step-by-step solution in her book, Let Go of Clutter. In the first chapter, Why Letting Go is So Hard to Do, Schechter explains why we may be biologically programmed to accumulate, why the fear of regret keeps us from discarding stuff, and how society encourages us to gather more and more. Chapter 4, Purging Paper and Preventing Piles, is another favorite chapter. The author walks us through the method she uses with her clients to quickly sort and purge paper piles. She recommends a File Index, and shows you how to set it up for your household. The last part of the book looks to the future and explains how to keep your home clean once you've decluttered it. This book is filled with lots of fill-in-the-blank forms and step-by-step pathways to take you from clutter-filled to clutter-free. If your clutter is taking over and you've reached the end of your rope with no idea where to start, check out Let Go of Clutter.
- Book arrived in a timely fashion and was in good condition.
- Well organized. Strong on the HOW TO. I purchased an additional 10 books to give to friends and family. Easy read. Importand information for my senior clients as well. Thanks for asking.
- The reviews for this book are so overwhelmingly positive, I figured it *must* be good. Bad assumption! I gleaned very little usable information from this book. The author uses far too much space defining terms, relating her own experiences, and trying to be cute.
Even worse, as another reviewer noted, the author's tone is a bit condescending. Despite her purported years of experience as a professional organizer, she doesn't seem to have a good handle on what causes people to develop clutter problems. Her extensive use of coined words is annoying. The material is poorly organized, jumping around at times. Also, the writing drags in places; it could have used a more thorough editing. Overall, the writing and material presented is of low quality.
For example, in a chapter on how to clear out sentimental clutter, the author's advice can be distilled into one largely unhelpful sentence, "Save only objects that evoke pleasant or poignant feelings; don't keep anything that makes you feel stressed or upset." Okay, that makes sense, but is that really going to do me any good? I could have used suggestions on how to mentally unhook objects from memories. Then the author goes on to introduce terms such as "clutterabilia" and "memorabiliac." (And she's just getting started! Watch out for "paperosis" and "redundabundance.") Is having a coined word going to solve anything?
In dealing with the fear of getting rid of something and then regretting it, the author admonishes, "If you do find yourself grieving over the loss of something that was never alive to begin with, you need more help than I can give you, and I urge you to seek counseling." At this point, I think she has dismissed most of her readers. She continues without compassion, "Your regrets are...a poor excuse for you to keep hanging onto clutter." Tough love?
Some people might find the author's tone helpful, but I was totally put off by it. I would recommend a thorough perusal of the excerpt available online before investing in this book. It should have been a giveaway to me that so many copies are available used. Maybe the sellers took the author's suggestion to only hold onto things that are useful.
