2 comments about Applied Strength of Materials (4th Edition).
- The book was very helpful on grasping the understandig of strenght of materials, but if had the option of having a solutions manual to know whether I had worked the problems out corretly I would have capitalized on it. The book was laid out well and had easy to follw examples.
If there is a solutions manual available or perhaps a study guide I would be intersted in obtaining one.

- If you are not using this book at your school demand that they start using it. Easy to use, read and study from. It's also a great primer for learning how to use books like Marks Standard Handbook for Mechanical Engineers.

5 comments about The Homeowners Guide to Energy Independence: Alternative Power Sources for the Average American.
- This book covers all of the basics that you need to know. I was particularly interested in the solar stuff. The author explains how you can save and avoids being too technical. Highly recommended. Truthfully, this is the kind of book that should be required reading for every home builder, home owner, and school kid.
- This book gives just the right level of detail to get homeowners going with renewable energy. It gives the right level of detail to make financial and behavioral decisions. I liked the large number of references, as well--they give the reader the ability to look into particular subjects with more detail.
This book covers all the bases without getting to lengthy and losing the reader's interest. It will get you informed and then get you on your way.
- This is a great book for those who are looking at this topic for the first time. I wld recommend it to those who have just developed an interest in this area. It gives a basic overview & should wet the tastebuds for more - further information & weblinks are given in the back.
- Homeowners interested in sustainable living will want to delve into this book, which will give them the basics to begin thinking about alternative energy.
- A great title like this should be written by someone with experience in the field. There are a lot of sources from this guy named.... or this person from... This seems like someone just wanted to get a paycheck for writing a book on a hot topic.

5 comments about Commercial Refrigeration for Air Conditioning Technicians.
- this book i a very comprehensive and well rounded in the real work workings of referation. I would recomend this book to anyone that is interested in furthing there knowledge in refrigeration field.
- If you are looking to move from air-conditioning to refrigeration service, all the information you need is inside this book!!
- If you've done some HVAC work but find yourself stumped the first time you work on a freezer or frig, then you need this book!. This is a world of oil losses, hard to know line pressures, strange refrigerant valves and controls and head masters, etc. And this book will explain them all to you with lots of plain talk, plain examples, great drawings, and even a cd-rom of animation. And best of all, it has a page of "Rules of Thumb", such as; High Efficieny (seer) condenser splits = 20 degrees and below. And since refrigerant recovery of freezers and frig's are far more common place than HVAC work, it covers several methods of evacuation and recovery. This book has lots of troubleshooting notes and lots of pictures and all the basics of refrigeration from motors, capillarys, TEV'S and defrosters through superheat and critical charging and so much more. I own many hvac books and this one absolutely stands out as a 'must have' book ! Another good book to have when you want to "master" the trade, is Technician's Guide to Refrigeration Systems'by Corinchock. And of course, Troubleshooting and Servicing Modern Air Conditioning and Refrigeration Systems by Tomczyk. Warning that Tomczyk's book is sold as several books, each with a few chapters, so only buy the complete book I mentioned above, else you will have duplicate text.
- the book is well put together and provides well thought out information, as well as being in depth enough to help anyone serious about the HVAC/R trade. I hate spending money for bad books and am happy to recommend this book for purchase. Buy it.
- book not what I anticipated, not much on refrigerated systems, good if you want to learn the overall operation on normal hvac systems. expected much on refrigeration systems, got disapointed, not worth the cost of book.

5 comments about Sun-inspired House: house designs warmed and brightened by the Sun.
- A 'sun-inspired' room is sunny, open, warm in winter and cool in summer, and integrates sustainable design principles with efficiency and useful design basics. And THE SUN-INSPIRED HOUSE illustrates a range of concepts related to the sun, using fifty house plans to demonstrate integrated concepts. This is a collection of home designs which blends floor plans and modification ideas with sun-inspired homes for all climates. Blends of design and construction information provide an architect's expertise under one cover. What it lacks in glossy color photos is more than made up for in practical application designs and insider information paired with homeowner testimonials that they actually work. A top pick.

- Debra Rucker Coleman's book, The Sun Inspired House, showcases passive solar houses that are comfortable the year around, light filled, beautiful, healthy for the residents, and good for the environment. These houses cut energy bills in half and cost very little additional to build. Coleman inspires the reader to want to live in a passive solar house, and walks them through the process of making that happen. Her reviews of current books, design analysis software, and websites point the way to more detailed information on all aspects of the design and construction process.
With over 25 years experience working and living with passive and active solar systems, this is the book on passive solar design I recommend for prospective homeowners, architects, and homebuilders.
Daryl Bergquist, Earth Steward Solar Consulting, Blountsville, Alabama
- I really like this book and their web site also. I am in a planning stage of building a house and at this time I think I will use the author to design my home when I am ready. They have many good ideas. Buy this book, it is a good one.
- i like the book a lot. it has good beginning information, and good resources in the back.
- This book defines the basic components of a pasive solar home and provides guidelines for building a home with plenty of house plans as examples. It also lists lots of references for more technical information about both passive and active solar heating and cooling.

4 comments about Industrial Refrigeration Handbook.
- simple,in depth, informativ
- I have covered this book in length-no other book or handbook comes close in terms of simplicity of it's explaination. The latest ASHRAE Refrigeration Handbook is a good reference to have when using this book as there are cross references.Value for money and looking forward to the next book that would be specific on Ammonia Refrigeration Systems design.
- I enjoyed reading this book as a more intermediate industrial Mechanic, but for that price I expected a book with glossy pictures. I feel the book was over priced for a bunch of pages with drawings. Just a few black and white pics of equipment, and lots of complicated other stuff. The best pic was the cover. To really teach somebody this field you need to be a lot more visual.
I wouldn't recommend this book to a beginner. It would be a bit frustrating. But for someone who just wants a reference book with lots of useful information I think this book is for you.
- It's an oldie, but a goodie! It's still useful ,relevant and dependable. For readers who want the kindergarten pictorial paperback, here you will be greatly disappointed. It does have clear schematical drawings and diagrams,in no-nonsense black and white. The formulas and equations are plentiful and helpful. It's just the best handbook on all aspects and applications for workplace industrial refrigeration operations.I have not found another ,in this particular area, that is on par or better than this one.

2 comments about Code Check HVAC: An Illustrated Guide to Heating and Cooling, Second Edition.
- Needs to be updated to include IBC 2003. Still showing 2002. Don't expect a new edition. Note printing of June 2002.
- I bought three books at the same time, recieved two within seven days of the order. The third has yet to come. Contacted the vendor and he stated that it must be lost in the mail and offered to re-ship or re-fund, I wanted to re-ship because I needed this book for my work. Waited a couple of weeks and sent an e-mail asking when the book had been re-shipped, got and e-mail back but didn't state the date it was shipped but said if I didn't recieve it in three days they would give me a refund. Well have not gotten the book after 40 days. Not sure if I will get a refund like they state but if you are looking for a quick and no hasel transaction don't look here.

5 comments about The Woodburner's Companion: Practical Ways of Heating with Wood.
- In an age of rapidly rising energy costs for the homeowner, fresh attention is being given to heating alternatives to electricity and natural gas. Foremost among them is the woodburning stove and/or fireplace. Dirk Thomas is a Vermont chimney sweep how drew upon his many years of experience and expertise to write The Woodburner's Companion, a definitive "how to" manual and guide on the proper ways to utilize wood and fireplace stoves, boilers, furnaces, masonry heaters, and more. Thomas comprehensively covers such pertinent issues as the fuel value of various woods, how to purchase firewood, getting the most heat from what you buy, the environmental impact of woodburning, and a variety of chimney and flue arrangements for best efficiency. Curry provides specific emphasis on the safety issues involved with burning wood for fuel and heat. "Must" reading for the novice wood burner, The Woodburner's Companion will also offer considerable value for experienced woodburners with detailed discussions of woodstove installation, and American and Canadian building and fire codes.
- If you operate a woodstove, you should have this book. It covers every topic the woodburner should read prior to purchasing, for installation and operation. The information on safety, cleaning and chimney problems is vital. The advice on buying wood will prevent a rip-off (very easily done in the cord wood biz). Woodstove manufacturers should ship this book with their stoves. Highly recommended.
- In his earlier, complementary book "The Harrowsmith Country Life Guide to Wood Heat" Dirk Thomas lays out burning wood for heat from A to Z. Everything is covered from felling and limbing trees, using block and tackle to move them on any kind of surface, rigging up trucks to remove trees on hillsides, bucking wood, to installing stoves and chimneys. "The Woodburner's Companion" is more for the less adventurous homeowner who gets his wood ready-to-go or who is building a new house with woodburning in mind.
As such the book is very useful. Heating values of wood, fuel, coal and the like are compared, stove installation and chimney maintenance are covered in some depth, and enlightening facts about clean burning and types of creosote are discussed. I especially value Thomas's remarks on the best way to keep a proper fire in a wood stove going, which is to neither frequently feed it all the time nor starve it down to embers.
He covers types of chimneys, pros and cons of various materials, chimney cleaning techniques, and how best to handle fireplaces and fireplace inserts, as well as wood stoves and wood furnaces.
This is a capable book whose information will get the novice off to a flying start and hone the woodburning skills of the veteran. It will enhance efficiency and safety in the home.
- I found this book to have answered every question that can come to mind involving burning wood either as a primary source of heat or esthetic enjoyment. It is enjoyable reading as well as informative. I particularly enjoyed the pros and cons revealed about different methods of wood heat and also Dirk's subtle sense of humor in defending the burning of wood as an institution---as he so aptly states, it is defensible politically since no wars have been fought over wood (unlike oil), and if you have a wood spill, you're not looking at a major ecological catastrophe. It's not hard to see that Mr. Thomas likes his trade (chimney sweeping)and is the best choice to write a book of this nature. To all prospective readers: Enjoy!
- I have burned wood in a woodstove for years, but there was a lot that I didn't know, especially regarding chimney safety. I will be having my chimney inspected for cracked flue tiles, since I know that there was once a chimney fire (before my time). I don't want to endanger my family to save a few bucks. Thank you, Dirk, for writing such a clear and sensible guide. I expect that more people will be using wood to heat their homes as fuel and electricity costs continue to rise. This book is well worth buying as a reference and guide to safely useing a woodstove or fireplace.
