5 comments about SoloSider Siding Tools For Fiber Cement Siding And LP Smartside 3/8, Fully Adjustable Siding Gauges.
  1. Larry Haun's article in Fine Homebuilding (Feb/March '08) put me on to this wonderful time & frustration saver.

A description flub on my purchase confirmation (from Amazon) was quickly and cheerfully cleared up with my phone call to Isabel (the "Mom" I trust, of the Mom & Pop operation which manufacturers this inventive helper).

And, speedier than expected for the US Postal Service, it promptly and correctly arrived just a couple of days following.

  2. WOW! These things are fantastic! I purchased these to side my new home. I am building the house alone so anytime I can get a third hand, it is nice. These absolutely allow me to install the siding alone. I have just completed the first wall (28 feet wide, 30 feet to the top of the peak) and it has gone without a hitch. I would not install siding without these, even with a human helper.

  3. I am NOT a builder. I sided a 3800 sq/ft modern box home *ALONE* thanks to these things. I had a friend (that took these from me when I finished!) show me how to start and turned me loose on my own! I don't know how to say how great these little things are! My home is VERY contemporary and straight lines are manditory. With these guys that was NO PROBLEM! I was able to adjust up and down to match butt joints and keep full plumb on every board! I would leave board up two stories when my nailer would jam and it stayed..ready to go!(watch out for wind gusts) Thesze are a must have for ANYBODY that hangs Hardiplank. Thanks for making them!!!

  4. These are very simple to use just like in the instructions. They have held up well on my project. I'm a total novice and the learning curve is quite shallow. The results I'm getting are fantastic (I'm 3/4 done with my whole house). I would recommend, nay insist on these to anyone doing cement siding. It's an extra set of hands that never move the plank. I would caution any other novices that solo siding is a bit of a stretch. Don't get me wrong it is do-able; however for me, it was slow going. On the weekends with 1 or 2 helpers the project really took off. The $35 bucks was absolutely worth it.

  5. I just re-sided my whole house using these gauges. I never could have done it without them. I was working alone, so an extra set of hands (gauges) came in handy. Very satisfied. I would highly recommend. They are well worth the money.

5 comments about Black and Decker BDSL30 24-Inch 3-in-1 Gecko Grip Level.
  1. I may have to re-hang pictures and shelves with this handy gadget to correct all the lopsided work I've done over the years. The Gecko Grip appears to be very nicely made, and feels sturdy. The grips slip just a bit but still is better than my old level. The stud finder is much less complicated than an expensive one I have, plus it's tucked away in the level for easy access. All in all I am very satisfied with Gecko Grip.

  2. This is an easy to use product if you read the instructions. I like it very much.

  3. This level is two levels, a standard 2FT level and a standard 9" toolbox Torpedo level, in one compact package. The Torpedo level has an electronic stud finder in it that works easily and quite nicely. It slides in or out of one end of the 2FT level.

The 2FT level has non-slip rubber pads at each end to help it grip your wall once you have positioned and level the level on a wall. It has spring loaded slippery hard pads to ride on the wall without marking or marring it while you are positioning and leveling the level on the wall.

This is an accurate and compact handy level to have in your home for various projects such as mounting pictures, shelves, leveling appliances, curtain rods etc. The Stud Finder will find a stud to hang heavy pictures or shelves.

Very sturdy and well designed professional looking product. Highly recommend.

  4. Bought this for a friends intended husband. He really loves it (after he found out what it was used for). It really is a very useful tool to have around the house to assist with hanging pictures or shelves etc.

One thing I did not like was the fact that this was considered a seasonal item. I could not find one locally and had to order it from Amazon and even then the selection was limited..really feel lucky that I was able to find it.

  5. after ordering this item i ran across 1 at walmart, also aqua globes are there now also. i do like this level as i am a mirror collecter & seller. thats all igot to say about that.

5 comments about Leatherman 830970 25th Anniversary Limited Edition Tim Leatherman Signature Wave with Nylon Sheath and 25 Year warranty.
  1. I absolutely love my 25th Anniversary Tim Leatherman Signature Wave!

This tool is so solidly designed and incredibly versatile. I find it difficult to put down at times - it's a bit of a masterpiece in its own regard.

I can easily justify making this multi-tool part of my everyday wardrobe. I recall several instances from the past in which I would already have benefit from having had it with me.

The Leatherman tool is of excellent quality and it's got a 25-year warranty to back it up!

The Signature Wave comes with an attractive, durable, commemorative 25th Anniversary nylon sheath, appropriately silver in color, adorned with a reflective 25th Anniversary logo.

Get it while you still can! The 25th Anniversary limited edition Tim Leatherman Signature Wave will not be around for long. I highly recommend it. I am completely satisfied with mine!

  2. You cant go wrong with Leatherman...not today and not 5 years ago. I am in the IT field and have used one of these for a long time. My first tool was a valuable asset to me in everyday life until someone asked for it and I could not deny giving it to them at that very moment. It was time for a upgrade anyway.

This item popped up on GoldBox and voila - what a chance to get a great piece at a great price.....now with built in locking for the sharper objects and the ability to use bits for various purposes.

The item arrived quickly (amazon prime rocks).... It comes with a nylon sheath which I think is strong enough that it could possibly hold a bullet back... :-)

I would highly recommend that you buy the extra set of bits so you can use the screwdriver portion for many purposes.

Thanks Leatherman and thank you Amazon for the great deal.

  3. the item arrived on time ,in good condition and as advertised.Leatherman New Wave Multi-Tool

  4. I purchased this item for my son in law, who was thrilled! My husband has one, and uses it all the time. You cannot go wrong buying a Leatherman as a gift. Well made and practical.

  5. Since getting a new car, I no longer have keys to open boxes with so a friend told me to get a Leatherman... I don't regret the purchase...

5 comments about Victorinox Swiss Army Deluxe Tinker.
  1. Without the Deluxe Tinker I'd be just another slack-jawed mouth-breather calling for my drool-bucket to be changed. Eventually I hope to have my Deluxe Tinker implanted in my arm. How could I interact with the modern world without pliers and Phillips screwdriver? I have a subconscious urge to take it onto airliners -- that's how I lost my last one. The scissors confer critical cuticle care. The toothpick makes a fine map pointer. And ever since the plastic actuator broke off the top of my Braun coffee grinder, I have used the awl to press the tiny recessed button that turns on the motor and pulverizes the beans of rapid thought.

This wouldn't be my first choice for a picnic knife (no corkscrew) but nothing beats it for a day in the lab.

  2. Exactly what I wanted, Everyone should own one of these.
Dimensions(because they never give you enough of these)
    3.5" long, 13/16"(just over 3/4")wide, pliar is 1/8" wide, & 2 3/4" long.
This is a great tool, I owned the feildmaster model & like it very much but wanted one with a pliar, and this one fits the build. It is slightly wider than the fieldmaster, but is not too bulky or bothersome.
I use it a lot at work, I do air conditioning research in buildings with pnuematic controls. I use the pliars to remove stubborn pnuematic tubing from barbed fittings, then I use the scissors to cut off the warped end of tubing, and finally use the reamer to ream out the tubing for easy removal in the future.
I have found every tool to be usefull not just at work but everywhere. I like the combination of tools on the Deluxe tinker and the size is just right, if your thinking of buying a swiss army knife this model is great.

  3. I own lots of SAKs, but the Deluxe Tinker is my favorite. I carry it on a nearly daily basis. For me, the tools on it are the perfect combination--enough tools to handle most tasks, but not so many that you are carrying items you don't need. The pliers are precise and tough, and the blades are Yowee! sharp. Though I love my SwissChamp, there are tools on it I've never used. (How many fish does one scale in an average day?) This one doesn't have that problem--I've used every tool, most numerous times. If the Spartan doesn't seem like enough, and a SwissChamp is too much, the Deluxe Tinker might be perfect for you.

  4. Excellent product. The shipping was hilarious - the box was big enough to hold a pillow, and all that was in it, other than the packing, was this little pocket knife! John

  5. This is an excelent tool, no two ways about it. I first got a Victorinox knife from the retail store I work at. I loved that one. So, when I thought I lost it I went on Amazon to search for a viable replacement. The thing I like about Victorinox knives is their simple but solid construction. I like multi tools that handle more like pliers, but they have their place. Alot of the time those types of multi tools tend to be bulky and heavy. This knife is just about perfect both in size and weight, and of course the quality is there as it always is with Victorinox. MY only challenge is trying to find how many applications I can use this on. I recommend this knife to anyone looking for quality and value.

  1. I bought this to hang new shelves in all my closets. It was a great time saver and made the job much easier. This is a pretty simple device to use and works great in drywall. My only complaint is the level line fades a bit over distance along the wall at times.
Nice tool, though. I hope to be using it again on future projects. I would imagine it would be great for a new house.

  2. Good product, worth the money paid. It's not a high-end solution but can take care of almost any Harry Homeowner project around the house.

  3. I purchased this for myself, because my husband keeps the smaller B&D leveler hostage. Whilst, it is a nice leveler, I never expected it to be so big! I know my husband will steal this one and give me the smaller one (mission accomplished!)

  4. I'm an amateur do-it-yourselfer who does not want to spend a lot of money on tools. I used this for simple projects, such as installing shelves, and it worked very nicely -- especially considering the low price. I am very pleased.

  5. this was one of the best purchases, for it's price...i've already used it to help with painting and laying new bathroom floors...haven't used the part that attaches, and really haven't found a need for that, but if it works like the rest, it'll do just fine...this is a great size and price for someone who needs a little tool to help out...

  1. If you'd read any of my other reviews you'd know I give a 3 as normal and 4-5 are resevered for items that beat expectations. This is a 4. Works better than I expected. Just feels high quality!

  2. I recently bought for a gift for my dad. He is always asking to borrow my gerber so thought that I would buy him his own. I like so many features on this one that I ended up buying one for myself as well. The spring needle nose was an excellent idea. On top of that the price is almost half what I bought my other gerber for. Plus the warranty is lifetime. Excellent multi use tool.

  3. overall very pleased with this multitool. pliers are quite strong, knife blades stay sharp, fits my hand great. sheath is functional, but i dont think it will outlast the tool. some of the tools are a little hard to get out, but i do have large fingers. also, the saw is nearly worthless. if you need to rely on this saw you are in serious trouble.

  4. i like this tool, but it's a little heavy, and bulky. there are a few tools that are excessive for this device, and i'm not sure how handy the tool bits are. the bits are magnetized, but the conversion bit that attaches to the tool itself does not stay on very well. i like that all of the fold out tools are locking, but the locking mechanism isn't very smooth.

i would like a little more slimmed down version of this, with a larger knife, and without the tools. i can't really complain that it has a lot of tools though, convenience is the main idea with tools like this. the price is excellent, so i can't bring myself to drop this below 4 stars.

  5. This tool broke under use when I tried to use it as part of a home project. I was using the pliers to straighten out a bent piece of metal, something that I've done tons of times with regular pliers. I figured that I could use the Gerber tool the same way.

I was wrong. When I encountered a particular stubborn piece of metal, and it wouldn't give, I had to crank extra hard. Instead of the piece I was working on bending, the Gerber tool broke! One of the small metal retaining pieces that prevents the plier handles from collapsing bent under the pressure of my hand.

Folks, I'm not that strong. I wasn't applying some superhuman amount of strength to the tool. Nevertheless, it still broke under the strain of me gripping it extra hard. I don't recommend anybody getting this tool if you're going to use it for serious work, or going to depend on it for an emergency.

4 comments about Quick-Grip 53006 Micro Clamp.
  1. These quick clamps work great. They are very easy to quickly bring to the right size and then squeeze with one hand to tighten the clamp. As someone who works alone most of the time, being able to clamp one handed is a big help.

  2. If you build scale models and other miniatures, you will find that two or more of these clamps are part of your essential kit. They are about the closest thing you will find to untiring fingers. They can hold softly or as firmly as any screw clamp. The parts and pads seem impervious to model making solvents and chemicals.

I also use them as a simple hand vice. Fixtures and jigs that utilize clamping can be taped to the jaws. The main bar can be replaced with a brass strip if you need a greater reach, but also need the smallness of these jaws. Household repairs? No. The slightly stouter Quick-Grips are much more rigid. These are for very light work and are the right tool for the delicate work of model building

I'd give a sixth star if I could!

  3. I purchased these to use in assembling parts for behives. They are samll enough to use for hobby and model work. But they are strong. Easy to adjust and clean. My only gripe is that the pads fall off, and can get lost -- as has happened to me.

  4. These little clamps are just the right size for those small boxe's I seem to be making a lot of lately. With the soft pads and the one handed operation they make glue ups a snap on small items. Getting the right pressure on these small pieces is essential, with larger clamps it is too easy to get too much pressure and squeeze out all the glue, leaving a starved joint. These little clamps have a nice "feel", allowing you to get just the right amount of pressure to insure a strong joint.
    Highly recommend.

5 comments about Kreg RAC Right Angle Clamp.
  1. The RAC makes a creating a tight flush joint a snap. It actually is better then a second set of hands unless those hands can press 350lbs. A second clamp would be a good idea on larger projects. I was frustrated as the spring fell off a few times at first but I took care of it and it works fine now.

  2. Great clamp for Kreg's pocket screw holes. I order the extra clamp to go with the kit I purchased earlier. Good buy

  3. I bought two of these clamps and glad I did. On occasion, I use to hold the wood in place on both ends or at a corner. I can drill a hole, clamp it then drill the other end and/or adjoining board, knowing the boards are going to be precisely in place when I put in the screws. Now its not moving.

The quality is good and will last a long time. It is amazing to me still how well they can hold at a right angle. It really works!

I easily recommend these and they make the finishing touch just a little easier for me.

  4. This is a great product but if you look around you can find this clamp cheaper.

  5. This clamp works flawlessly every time. Conceptually, it's very simple. It replaces one of the flats on a normal Kreg clamp with a pin that fits in the pocket hole. Use the clamps in one or more pocket holes while you drive the screws into the others. If you need 100% square accuracy, you can hold a square in place against the joint while you drive the screw.

By the way, you can use these to clamp items that are not flush to one another, e.g., frame reveals, parts with differing thicknesses, and inset panels. Try THAT with a corner clamp!

To the reviewer that wondered about using pocket holes on the outside of items: In cabinet making, it's the INSIDE of the cabinet that's the concern. The ply or particleboard sides and back of the cabinet are completely hidden for most cabinets and virtually always covered on end cabinets.

As to the review that talks about blowing out the pocket hole, the only things that could possibly cause that are drilling too small a pocket (the clamps work perfectly with Kreg drills), clamping so tight as to crush the pocket, or clamping at an extreme angle (the clamp will work at a range of angles, not just 90 degrees). Or perhaps the owner has a defective clamp. In any event, this is a highly unusual complaint, and I've yet to hear from anyone else with this problem. Trust your own judgement, though, go to a demo at a woodworking show or store and try them.

  1. I really like the knife, but I can't figure out how to pack the accessory tools and knife into the sheath at the same time. I checked the included paperwork, but no hints. I can fit the tools or the knife, but not both without feeling like I'm about to pop some seams or tear the material. The knife has a pocket clip though, so it's OK.

  2. Got it for a gift. Description of product was a lot better than actual product. It's ok. But look around before you buy.

  3. Solid feel and smooth action using one hand. I also like the added seatbelt cutter, not sure if I would use it, but makes me feel a tad more secure knowing it's there.

  4. I am a career firefighter/paramedic with seven years on the job. I have already used the knife several times on EMS calls. Four times I have used the oxygen wrench (we all know how the black tabs seem to get lost), and I have used the Zuess tool (belt cutter) and window punch on a couple of MVA's with extrication. Also used it on several trauma patients to expose them. Far superior to trauma shears. The knife is great for all around uses around the firehouse. Highly recommended.

  5. The knife is excellent in all respects except that I have great difficulty opening it with one hand. If the thumb stud were positioned a little lower on the blade for better leverage, it would be perfect for the intended purpose.

5 comments about Apollo Precision Tools DT0773N1 - 135 Piece Household Pink Tool Kit.
  1. My son and future daughter in law just purchased a new home that needed a lot of work. I wanted to give her a house warming gift that she would enjoy and use. Since she would be helping with a lot of the repairs, I thought this pink tool kit would be perfect. She was very excited and said it had a lot of the tools she did not have. PS...my son has used it also.

  2. I would recommend this product. It was purchased for my wife and she really does use it. It's very handy to have around the house.

  3. I ordered this b/c I just moved into my first apartment.

When I went to open the tool box, the pink latch broke completely off...that is the only reason I gave this a 4.

The actual tools are of great quality and well worth the money!

  4. Of course, at this price, the tools are not the greatest, but the novelty of having everything in one spot and in HOT PINK is great. This would be a perfect 1st time gift for kids going to college who may need a few tools every once in a while. Definitely not for someone planning major renovations! :)

  5. I love my new tool kit! I mainly bought it for the pink drill, hammer, box cutter, scissors, wrench....well just about everything. I used the drill to screw a nail in the wall to hang a picture and it did the job well, and it's light weight (great for over head positions). But don't expect it to work like a Dewalt hammer drill. It's only 4.8 volts with little torque! I use the box cutter all the time because I'm constanly cutting up boxes from Amazon orders. The little screw drivers came in handy too to replace the batteries on my car remote control. It also comes with a box of extra screws nails, ect. If you are a woman in construction, or a SERIOUS do it yourselfer, this is NOT the kit for you. You will not be satisfied. Dewalt has some nice light weight tools. This kit is definately just for small stuff around the house which is a necessity. I can't count the numerous times when I wanted a light drill to assemble a desk, or shelf and I had to use a rusty old screw driver that hurt my hand. This would make a great gift for some of my girlfriends! Cute and fun and just for her! I give this kit 5 stars for the quality and its' purpose.
