5 comments about Gerber 22-01629 LMF II Black Infantry Knife.
  1. Always wanted a solid survival knife that I could depend on. This is it. I have tried it out at home to see what it could do and I was not dissapointed. It will cut through just about anything, I abused it in everyway possible and it still looks the same. I know there are more expensive knives but why spend the money.

  2. Love the sharpener in the sheath and partially serated blade, but I don't love how the sheath doesn't have any clips or loops to attach to a belt! I had to rig my sheath up with some paracord to make loops for my belt to pass through. That is why I gave this product 4 stars and not 5.

Other items to note: mine came with what appears to be a leg holster type of thing to wrap around your calf, and this knife is fairly heavy and feels quite solid.

  3. I bought this knife for a young man that is training in knife fighting and will be going survival camping with me this fall. I searched high and low for a knife that would fit the survival and fighting needs well. I was impressed by all of the reviews on this knife and am very happy with my choice. I initially started knife shopping because one of my sons is on orders for Iraq, is in the infantry, and I thought he should have a good knife. I chose the Kabar Warthog for him and myself. After ordering the LMF II, I was second guessing my kabar purchase, but I like the Kabar Warthog fixed blade better than the LMF even though it is not as specialized in design. If I was an Army Aviator, I would surely carry the LMF II.

The knife is well constructed, of high quality materials. I really like the concept of the full tang, though fully insulated from the butt cap. I am not fond of a serrated blade, nor the serrated location on the blade.

The knife has a nice weight, and balance. I don't like the handle shape, it doesn't fit my large hands well. Luckily the young man is only 13 so he does not have that problem.

The blade sharpens up very nicely, and I am sure this knife will serve him well in the future. The sheath is overkill for most, but offers a myriad of options for carry,

  4. This knife will, first, outlast it's owner. It will also take anything I've thrown at it. It is light, simple, and very solid. The sheath is MOLLE compatible, and has an integral sharpener. It's a mean, well-built knife.

  5. For those not interested in details: "It's a great knife."

For those interested in details: The blade steel is 12C27 - comparable in toughness (durability in rough use) and hardness (edge retention) to 440A. It's a good blend of both qualities.

The construction is not full tang but push tang; however, this does not appear to affect its structural integrity. The LMF II is constructed in this manner in order to give this particular knife an insulated handle. This means that you can cut an electrically "live" wire without fear of injury. The story you might have heard already about this knife is a true one - this is the knife that allowed an advanced marksman team to cut a live electrical line in Afghanistan powering insurgent search lights that would have given their position away.

Since 12C27 is a stainless steel, maintenance is minimal as is the probability of corrosion. The blade takes quite a good edge and shows good edge retention also. As a matter of fact, I was quite surprised at the edge retention. I recently spent near three hours outside doing some hacking some light, but woody, brush. When I had finished, the blade had dulled only slightly. The blade coating also held up very well and showed no flaking, chipping, scratching, or dusting.

As to sharpening, this steel was very easy to sharpen, and it takes a decent edge too. The sharpener built into the sheath works very well on the blade and will restore the knife's edge with only a few strokes. NOTE: Since part of the blade is serrated, this sharpener is limited in its ability - it can only sharpen the non-serrated part of the blade. Sharpening the serrations should be done using a diamond rod or a similar sharpening tool.

The handle design looked funny to me a first - didn't seem like a good design, but, thankfully, it's only looks. For starters, the grip is made of Kraton and offers a very secure and solid grip. As to comfort, my hand only started hurting after the first two hours of cutting, and that was minimal pain... but I'll admit after three, it was plum tuckered out. :) In other words, it was a very comfortable handle.

The "skull-crusher" butt (steel projection below the handle) is also insulated, so don't worry about getting shocked though there either. It is also designed to function as a make-shift hammer by using the top side of the butt as a hammer head.

The three holes in the knife (two in the guard, one in the butt) are intended for lashing the knife to a rod for use as a spear. The hollows or concave indents/depressions in the handle are also designed for this purpose and allow a lashed pole to fit snugly against the knife handle.

The blade performs well at light chopping (provided you make contact with the non-serrated part of the blade). Light chopping accounts for a large portion of outdoor/survival work with a knife. Heavy wood cutting should be done with a saw of some kind (wire saw, folding saw). The serrations also function very well and are useful in many ways - cutting rope being a big one. The serrations do seem a bit more "aggressive" than some other knives and seemed to make the work go faster.

As was already mentioned, the sheath has a built-in sharpener that works well and is easy to use. All you have to do is stick the blade in and pull it back out a couple times - you don't have to worry about the blade angles, because it's all taken care of for you. Overall, the sheath is very well made. The different carrying options are very nice and allow you to carry the knife on your thigh (using the leg straps) or on your belt (disconnect the leg straps).

This is a great knife for utility/survival purposes at an affordable price. Though I would love to buy a Fallkniven A1 or Odin or a Busse or a Randall, etc., the Gerber LMF II is much more budget friendly knife, and it still exudes quality while serving its purpose very well. You really can't go wrong with this knife.

5 comments about Kreg RAC Right Angle Clamp.
  1. The RAC makes a creating a tight flush joint a snap. It actually is better then a second set of hands unless those hands can press 350lbs. A second clamp would be a good idea on larger projects. I was frustrated as the spring fell off a few times at first but I took care of it and it works fine now.

  2. Great clamp for Kreg's pocket screw holes. I order the extra clamp to go with the kit I purchased earlier. Good buy

  3. I bought two of these clamps and glad I did. On occasion, I use to hold the wood in place on both ends or at a corner. I can drill a hole, clamp it then drill the other end and/or adjoining board, knowing the boards are going to be precisely in place when I put in the screws. Now its not moving.

The quality is good and will last a long time. It is amazing to me still how well they can hold at a right angle. It really works!

I easily recommend these and they make the finishing touch just a little easier for me.

  4. This is a great product but if you look around you can find this clamp cheaper.

  5. This clamp works flawlessly every time. Conceptually, it's very simple. It replaces one of the flats on a normal Kreg clamp with a pin that fits in the pocket hole. Use the clamps in one or more pocket holes while you drive the screws into the others. If you need 100% square accuracy, you can hold a square in place against the joint while you drive the screw.

By the way, you can use these to clamp items that are not flush to one another, e.g., frame reveals, parts with differing thicknesses, and inset panels. Try THAT with a corner clamp!

To the reviewer that wondered about using pocket holes on the outside of items: In cabinet making, it's the INSIDE of the cabinet that's the concern. The ply or particleboard sides and back of the cabinet are completely hidden for most cabinets and virtually always covered on end cabinets.

As to the review that talks about blowing out the pocket hole, the only things that could possibly cause that are drilling too small a pocket (the clamps work perfectly with Kreg drills), clamping so tight as to crush the pocket, or clamping at an extreme angle (the clamp will work at a range of angles, not just 90 degrees). Or perhaps the owner has a defective clamp. In any event, this is a highly unusual complaint, and I've yet to hear from anyone else with this problem. Trust your own judgement, though, go to a demo at a woodworking show or store and try them.

5 comments about Black & Decker BDSL10 36-Inch Gecko Grip Level with Accu Mark.
  1. The level has a nice solid feel, and the rulers are incredibly helpful for spacing hangers (either for one hanging that needs multiple hangers or trying to hang several items in a row). It feels relatively sturdy, especially for work around the house.

The only thing I would like to change about the product is that it does not come with either a holder or a built-in tool for marking where to drill - the black & decker stud finder that I have used comes with a small plastic tool that punches a small hole in the drywall which would have been perfect.

  2. This level worked great for hanging most of my large frames. The only problem I found was for smaller frames (<16"). The Accu marks are not able to move close enough. Otherwise, I would recommend it.

  3. Bought this for $20 on Amazon while it was on sale. It was a steal at that price. Good level. Definitely worth $30. I would go to the hardware store if you need something a little more 'professional' though. Still, for anyone doing work around the house (especially picture hanging!), than this is a good level to buy.

  4. I have been trying to hang pictures for some time now. They all have been uneven. Finally I can get them straight and even. I love the holes on the level that allow you to nail the nail in the exact spot and with no time and effect at all. The length is great so no matter what size you need to hang, you can. Everyone needs this tool as part of their inventory for home or office.

  5. this thing has great features (love the movable targets) but I wonder how reliable and exact the vials are.

  1. This is one of those tools that you wish you had invented yourself. I've hung several items and it made hanging things easer. It kept my hand out of danger and I like it. This is worth every cent I spent.

  2. These two"holders" protect your fingers from being damaged while trying to hold small nails, brads, staples, screws and the like. You can also use these tools to "reach" spots that your fingers cannot, so starting the above items in tight areas is a much easier procedure... I made a prototype of this tool a few years ago but never got it made; I'm glad these folks did, so I could buy theirs... One improvement would be for the smaller tool to fit inside the larger tool saving some storage space.

  3. Great for holding nails in those hard to get places. Equally as great for using small nails that are hard to get a hold on. Great idea and great product.

  4. I purchased this tool (ThumbSaver) just a short time ago but have already found several uses for it in the on going process of home maintenance. Since one can easily see from the write up what the tool is used for there is no need to explain the obvious so I will simply say that the tool does exactly what it was designed to do and does it well. If you have even an occasional nail or screw to drive I recommend the purchase of the ThumbSaver.

5 comments about Leatherman 934850 Quick-Release Pocket Clip and Lanyard Ring.
  1. Perfect - Perfect - Perfect
Snaps on just like it should and makes it handy to clip to pocket in-between working with leatherman. A well thought out product.

  2. I really hav'nt used it yet, I just bought it because I needed to spend 5 more bucks to get super saver shipping!!! I'll let you know when I do...

  3. The pocket clip is nice and will holds the Leatherman firmly in your pocket.
But if you are planning to use the Lanyard Ring, think again.
It is very large and clumsy.
I tried to use it on my Wave with the leather sheath.
Since the ring is very big, the sheath can hardly close and it bends the ring.
Bottom line, i wouldn't recommend it if you are planning to use the ring.

  4. I just got my new Leatherman Wave & couldn't wait to get this pocket clip because carrying it in the belt sheath just isn't me. I can't comment on the lanyard ring because I don't plan on using it, just going in the drawer for now. This pocket clip allows me to carry my Wave with a "lower profile" & that's what I wanted. It doesn't pull your pocket down or anything, keeps it right where you need it & looks really good when attached. One concern I had about it was that it would get in the way when using the tool, luckily it's not an issue with this clip. If you're like me & don't want to carry your Leatherman in the belt sheath, get this clip, you won't be disappointed.

  5. I've had my wave for about five years and had a classic Leatherman for about ten before that. I've always loved the leather holsters but recently the snap on the holster for my wave gave up the ghost. Fortunate for me, I thought, that I had bought the lanyard ring and pocket clip set! I like the lanyard ring quite a bit--the quick-release functionality works really well and is superior to the well hidden lanyard ring already on the Wave. After the holster died, I decided to switch to the pocket clip--it's a pocket knife after all. Not three days after switching to the pocket clip (which takes the space of the lanyard ring so they can't be used simultaneously) I sat down, heard a "Sproing!" noise and felt the sharp points of my now broken pocket clip digging into my hip. I'll be sure to make use of the fairly generous 25 year warranty on Leatherman products but I don't think I'd recommend anyone buy this unless they just want the quick-release ring.

  1. I haven't used the product yet, because I just purchased the actual knife sharpener with a new blade already in it. AccuSharp products in general have always been fantastic and affordable -- I'm sure when it comes time to replace the blade, I will be happy with the performance.

  2. I purchased this item after seeing it reviewed on Americas test kitchen. It works very well.

5 comments about Stanley 66-052 Precision Screwdriver Set, 6-Piece.
  1. This is a excellent set if you need small screw drivers. The screw drivers themselves have a nice shape and are easy to use. The case is tough, and bright yellow so its easy to spot on a messy workbench or in a drawer. I got this to work on robotics, but my dad got one because he was tired of using junkie 'eye glass repair kit' type screw drivers on his glasses. We are both happy.

  2. i spend a great chunk of my week working on laptops and to that end, need a good precision screwdriver set. i bought one (unknown brand) from a camera store about ten years ago that has been my 'go-to' set over the years, but as i get busier i need more sets around the shop and for my on-site bag. i've puchased a number of sets over the years only to have them fail nearly immediately (stripped tips every time) and really only purchased this set as a test. 6 months in and going strong and i've actually ordered 4 more sets for the shop because i've been so pleased.

the tips don't appear to be hardened (or magnetized) but have held up well so far. the case is nice and the entire set is amazingly lightweight. the drivers themselves are very easy to use with the swiveling, cupped, top being very comfortable and useful.

my only complaint so far is that they're actually TOO light. a little more weight would help with more difficult screws. that being said, i've only had to drop back to my old set twice in the last 6 months and both were on sony laptop drive carriage screws (which are notoriously tight).

    well worth the money.

  3. Granted, these are cheap, but in the long run they'll be expensive, as I'll buy another set soon. I'd return them but I tossed the packing.

Someone mentioned that they are magnetized, but on my set anyway the amount was so small (on the Phillips #0 and #1 anyway) that they couldn't really hold onto screws.

  4. We lost our other set and believe me, one doesn't realize how useful this little kit can be. Searched all over and was so happy to find it on "Amazon.com". Eyeglasses, little toys, etc., this product is outstanding!

  5. it's pretty good, if it had other types I would give it a five star but is a good product.

5 comments about FastCap Accuscribe Scribing Tool.
  1. I have been pleased with the workmanship and functionality of my "scribe" which I've used mainly as a compass. I like the fact that the device locks in whatever position I want. There are a number of features that I haven't explored. There is a built-in sharpener, and I figure if I need to do a really large circle I can just put in a long pencil instead of the stub that it comes with.

I keep it handy in my shop. A good value.

  2. Great idea and well built. I first saw it in a wooden boat magazine and thought it looked good. As a wood worker, drawing circles is a common problem. I've used it a couple times and have these observations:
    1. It holds it's position and measurement quite well.
    2. It is constructed of good materials.
    3. The pin pulls back for safe stage, but doesn't stay in the extended position without the help of a little electrical tape.
    4. I think it would be nice if the pin side would also swivel to allow larger circles.
Would I recommend it? Yes, but the builder could improve their design a bit.

  3. The joint makes it easy to work with. The only thing I would like to see changed is the pencil holder. I would like to be able to use a mechanical pencil or pen. The pencil provided (standard #2 pencil) is the only style that will fit. I'd buy it again.

  4. This Product has been improved and the nuts will now hold it in place. If you have one that does not work contact FastCap [...] and they will replace it or take care of you in a way that will satisfy you. Their customer service is unbelievable! If there is a way they can improve it let them know, they'll listen!

  5. Good for scribing trim to walls. Flat bottom for accrate scribes. Must have for stain-grade trim.

5 comments about Leatherman 830160 Surge Pocket Multitool with Leather Sheath.
  1. I have had two previous products made by Leatherman, both of which gave me good service. I am pleased with the variety of tools that are on this model and really like the replaceable blade/file idea. I broke the file off from my last model.

I had the new tool for two days when I used it to twist some fencing wire. One side of the pliers snapped off almost immediately. I sent the unit back using the warranty process and it arrived back fixed within two weeks. Apparently the pliers don't handle a sideways torque too well so I will be more careful in the future. It has held up well when cutting wire since then; I don't think I'll try twisting it again any time soon.

  2. This larger Leatherman tool is the best yet! I've been using a Leatherman tool since the inception, and "won't leave home without one"! I'm pleased!

  3. it's a great tool and handy too. looks really nice and the finishing is quite good though the pack it came was labelled made in China; which i thought was an all american made...anyways that doesnt tarnish the brand name. the only difficulty i had is to change the blade. still i havent been able to do that. so if anyone out there knows how to do then let me know. my email add is anil_doc@hotmail.com

  4. This is my first Leatherman tool, I had always bought the cheaper brands before hand, thinking a multi-tool is a multi-tool, but this Leatherman has changed my mind. It is definately the multi-tool to which all others should be compared to. Everything is easily accessed, and is made to last a lifetime, I can even buy add ons such as extra bits for the screwdriver. I definately recommend Leatherman multi-tools, you can't go wrong.

  5. I read these reviews after ordering this as a pro deal from the manufacturer. I was a little scared after I read some of them.
Now that it arrived and I have had it in my hand all my worries are gone.
It fits my hands just right. It feels like a solid and bomber tool. I love the easy blade access.
Now, in the case it seems about cell phone sized. So, on a belt it does feel big. I don't really mind though. The case would get a 4 or so and the gadget would get a 5 so really this should be a 4 and a half.
Now, as you read that this is just right for my hand, bear in mind that I am 6'2" and 250 lbs. This may feel big to average people. To me though, just right.

  1. Nice set, nice case, nice price. The deep sockets are really good to have. Quality seems first rate. Unless you are a professional mechanic, this should meet all your needs.

  2. The tools are a good value for the price which was $36.00 for me with free shipping. They do not compare to Craftsman, but they are good for small jobs. The only issue is the case. It feels like a cheap plastic and seems like it won't last very long.

  3. was a little disappointed with this purchase initially but after a coupla days use hey seem to be holding up well.
