5 comments about BRK Brands 7010B Hardwire Smoke Alarm with Photoelectric Sensor and Battery Backup.
  1. I got eight of these alarms. They were hard wire with backup batteries. Every alarm needed a replacement battery after I installed it. They all gave low battery alarms after I installed them. Occasionally one of them (I don't kow which one) keeps chirping. Drives me crazy.

  2. Works well with no false alarms yet. Had a bunch of smoke coming from the toaster once and it went off in a timely manner, which means it works as it should.

  3. BRK Hardwire Smoke Alarm with Photoelectric Sensor and Battery Backup #7010B bought three first time installed fairly easy and came with extra such as wire connector and dust cover. No problems.
Bought a second set of three with no problems.

  4. Spoke to tech support. Suggested that it would be nice to have a switch so that you could run this smoke alarm as an AC only, in case:

1.) the battery is low, you don't have a 9V battery on hand, and it starts to chirp at 3 AM in the morning, in which case, you'd have to:

a.) shut off power at the circuit breaker box (...and who knows what else this will shut off, if you're not on top of this...)

    b.) remove the battery

c.) press and hold the Test button for 10 seconds to discharge the branch circuit . . . or

2.) you're not extremely concerned about the added safety of battery backup, but would still like to have this as an option, in case you change your mind

As long as the AC power is on, this unit will chirp, if the battery is low, or if it has been removed.

It appears that to avoid any headaches, one has to change the battery at least annually - ok - combine this with doing the necessary annual maintenance (dusting with compressed air).

One might be able to save some money with the 10-year (shelf life) battery (actual life 3 to 5 years), but in my opinion, chances are that it will die at 3 AM in the morning.

For no headaches, and having the battery backup option, it appears that you cannot get around having to replace the 9V battery annually . . . and this is not a bad thing . . . !

Reason: Besides the battery, smoke alarms need maintenance - like compressed air used on them at least annually, especially on the sensor . . . I didn't know that . . . I am replacing an AC only ionization . . . it never chirped, and I never dusted it in 16 years! I also didn't know that you are supposed to replace the entire unit every 10 years (every 5 to 7 years with smoke and CO combination detectors). Is this supposed to be common knowledge?

My experience: If you never have to look at an alarm, and haven't figured out how to use a calendar software program to keep track of it (I use Calendarscope, it has some good printing options), you will forget about the alarm, and neglect to do some potentially life-saving maintenance

CONS: Maybe this smoke detector could be improved if it took AA batteries instead of 9V (6 AA batteries x 1.5V each = 9V) . . . I have a "battery only" CO detector that only takes 3 AA batteries, could this smoke detector run on 3 AAs? . . .

With five smoke detectors, replacing the batteries annually, you end up with five partially unused 9Vs. What can be done with these? Not much. You have to throw them out. The only place one might use these where it wears out is on an outside garage door opener. If I had a bunch of partially unused AA batteries (6 AAs x 5 smoke detectors = 30 batteries annually), I could use them in devices where they could wear out, such as in flashlights that take AA batteries, or a weather station base, weather station probes, remote control for DVD player . . . I would seek to only buy devices that take AA batteries - they can sit around until I completely use them up. A digital multi-meter to measure their voltage is essential in this process. I will be looking for a smoke detector that takes AAs in the future.

Annual cost to replace the batteries in 5 smoke detectors (9V vs. if the smoke detector took AAs):

    A 4-pack of 9Vs is $9.97, a 2-pack of 9Vs is $5.94
    9.97 + 5.94 = $15.91

    A 16-pack of AAs is 9.97
    9.97 x 2 = $19.94

    Extra amount spent on AAs:
    19.94 - 15.91 = $4.03 . . . and I'd have two extra, fresh AAs

  5. If you need to mount a fire/smoke detector in a hallway, near a bathroom, than this is the detector for you. I've had zero false alarms. The price was lower than most other detectors. It seems to be working well.

  1. Excellent tape, easy to start, never sticks to itself, very thick, high grade. I'm ordering again.

  2. As this nifty little product advertises on its box, it is frustration free. Having moved six times in ten years (as well as helping others!) I am all too familiar with brand name packing tape that turns into a nightmare. I am on my second roll, and I have not once had a problem finding the "start" of the tape, "split" pieces of tape, or any mangling of the tape of any kind. It also holds on the boxes well, and is easy to cut off with the perforated "cutter" mechanism provided on the side of the roll. Really great product - wish I had been using it all along.

  3. I ran out of packaging tape and being a trader and seller online, I need it in the house. After reading other reviews (and prev. good experience with Duck brand) I decided on this.

It unrolls easier than the Scotch brand i was using. It's static-y though, so paper 'jumps' up to it, which can be bad if you need to NOT tape a specific area (eg barcodes for the USPS delivery confirmation). But between the price and my current experience, I'm very happy!

  4. This packaging tape is extremely easy to use due to its dispenser.
The sticky side isn't too tacky on your fingers, and the tape is very easy to peel off the rest of the roll if it ever comes off the dispenser.
    It truly is frustration free.

  5. Stuff kept coming off boxes. Regret using this vs my normal Scotch version.

Cant stray from 3m it seems when it comes to clear packaging tape

  1. I read the other ratings from customers on this item before I purchased it and went ahead based on the reviews. All were correct, easy etc. I especially appreciated the warnings about using around children, having a bucket nearby, and the fact that it has no on or off. Works great.

  2. I ordered this and used it to remove wallpaper that has been in my grandmothers house for over thirty years and it did the job. The only bad thing about the steamer is that you do have to watch how much you steam the drywall. The problem with it is if you stem too little it doesn't budge and too much you damage the wall so i would just be careful with the steam. You will probubly end up having to patch the drywall in a few places if you have an older home so plan on that expense.

  3. I had spent days trying to take off old wallpaper which had been put up without any wall sizing or preparation. Tried everything including vinegar and hot water, the commercial spray preparation, an old steam iron, etc. Finally, decided to order the Wagner Wallpaper Remover and had the room finished in one day! It is worth every penny spent on it and the water lasts about an hour and a half. Great product!

  4. While this steamer does get the wallpaper off, I just wish that the steam plate was larger. It works best if you leave the steam plate on the wall for at least 20 seconds. Then it takes 2 seconds to scrape off the wallpaper. If the plate covered more surface area, the job would get done quicker. I am currently looking for a larger steam plate since I have a very large room to do. I still would recommend this product without hesitation. It is nice not to have to use any chemicals.

  5. I had started taking down a room of wallpaper only to find out it was not going to come down. It took me over an hour to get small strips off using my hands and a blade. I found the steamer on line and it came within two days. It took me two days and all the wallpaper was off and the room was ready for paint. It pealed off like butter at times. I plan to use it in another room next and know it will do a great job. Well worth the price, plus it stores away very nicely.

  1. I just finished the install of this, took me about 2 hours. I was replacing a badger5, about 10 years old, and was pretty noisy. I had high hopes that this would be super silent, and my biggest disappointment is it's still pretty noisy.

The install instructions were pretty good. The power cord thing is really annoying, make sure you deal with this before you install (make sure you have it!) and buy some plumbers putty.

I am not a plumber, and it was a little nerve wracking to install, the wife is still questioning whether there are any leaks, but it seems ok.

Overall, it looks nice, works fine, but I was unimpressed with how much less quiet it was than the Badger 5.

  2. Ok, so this is the first disposer I've used in my own house that cost more than $75. Let me tell you it's worth paying a bit more! I put one of these in my remodeled kitchen 6 months ago and it is super quiet. Way better than the standard unit. I highly recommend. -Matt Risinger

  3. We just purchased another InSinkErator Compact Evolution Household Food Waste Disposal in Gray. Our last one just died on us and it was 16 years old. The quality is great and oh so quiet compared to our last one. The one feature I love about it is that the rubber can be taken out and periodically cleaned underneath which the old one couldn't be and that was a hassle cleaning. I hope this one lasts as long as the first one we had. As far as we are concerned you can depend on the name InSinkErator for quality. Also, my husband had no trouble installing it himself.

  4. This is true. When we turned it on we thought something was wrong and we were just hearing an electrical hum but the disposer wasn't actually kicking in. Wrong. It was on. It IS that quiet. Everything else--the fact that it works really well and was easy to install, is gravy. The thing is quiet. My husband and I were amazed.

  5. The design is sleek and the installation is easy and straightforward. The operation is noticeably quiet (we used to have a GE unit which was deafening), though sometimes is not very effective: some of the scrapes required couple of runs to clear out. And for a disposal, it's a bit pricy. Overall I am happy with the product and it's a keeper.

  1. Rubbermaid delivers again! This simple item, a plastic butter dish, comes complete with cover, is dishwasher safe, and is unbreakable. As with most Rubbermaid products, good design goes hand-in-hand with good function...and all at an affordable price.

  2. This butter dish is ok, but the lid does not stay on when you pick it up and it is not very attractive. It does the job, but the one that I used to have (can't remember the brand) the lid would stay on much better.

  3. love the butter dish it has a very tight lid i would recommend it to everyone.

  4. Having kids, I LOVE this butter dish. No breaking, lightweight, easy to clean. Ours got melted by being placed a little too close to a hot burner and we've been looking for a replacement for months. I teased that I'd try Amazon and there it was! I love the look of the more expensive butter dishes but this is just so functional that it's everybody's favorite.

  5. Great product! Keeps butter protected from picking up other food orders while in the fridge and protected from insects while having meals on the deck.

  1. This was perfect for our mentally retarded daughter who has always loved the cone shape. It was a size her hands could handle, bright colors that catch her eye, and easily cleaned from slobber, food and so on. A perfect birthday gift.

  2. I ordered two sets of these cones to use with my dog training course. They shipped right away and have worked out perfectly.

  3. I used these cones with my Kindergarten and first grade classes. They did very well. The game they played had them going around the cones rolling a ball similar to rolling the egg. It helps them with their coordination.

5 comments about Belkin Compact Surge Protector.
  1. My last surge protector blew up along with a DVD player, and it was not a pleasant experience. Luckily, everything else that was plugged into it survived, but I figured it was time to find a surge protector that I had been seeking since the dawn of time (make that the dawn-of-my-first-computer time). Trying to make all the plugs fit was an exercise in frustration and the units never stayed in place because the weight distribution always tipped the things over. This little gem solved all those problems and looks good besides. I finally found the surge protector I wanted and needed! It is worth every penny.

  2. Good, clean design and layout. Flexible enough to accommodate up to 6 power bricks without blocking the other outlets (4 on the wide face, 2 more on the ends of the narrow face). A "Not Grounded" warning light is a great feature that provides additional peace of mind.

I mounted it on the underside of my desk to get all the wires off the floor. The thoughtful design extends to the keyhole for screw mounting which gives you the option of forward or sideways engagement. It works even better when upside down because the cables hang down instead of draping over.

On the quality side, the on/off switch feels flimsy, and 3 prong, grounded plugs take some effort to pull back out. Belkin probably figured these actions aren't frequent enough to warrant complaint, i.e. most people just plug in, switch on, and forget about it for the next three years, and cost reduced these components to keep the price down. It's a good compromise. I'm very pleased with the product and the price!

  3. Disappointed with what I received.

I bought this to use a power distribution center for an aquarium. What's the first thing I see: Not suitable for aquariums. On the box and on the unit itself, but not on the website description.

Also, there is no circuit breaker or on/off switch with this unit. First time I've seen one of these without a master power switch and a breaker.

  4. This Belkin protector is a very good product. It saves a lot of space, has many outlets, and looks very modern. Compare to a store price, it can be bought at a very decent price on Amazon. You can also find this product wothout shipping cost.

  5. Bought it because it handled the large size plugs, but obviously dying negates this feature.

  1. The battery holds a full charge many for weeks and the AC and car charger ports allow many devices to be used in an emergency. The weather radio with alert is the reason I purchased this unit. During an emergency, having a source of power, light and information is invaluable!

  2. This is the ultimate aid to being mobile with power tools--portable electric is a great thing! I no longer have the hassle of breaking out the 50-75 ft electrical cord to do yard work. Love the fact that I can take my Keuring single cup coffee brewer to the woods, a tailgate, or virtually anywhere with the absence of power and enjoy my endless cup of Green Mountain Coffee!

  3. We took it camping, my partner has to use a sleep machine and it was perfect for the tent.

  4. I purchased this product as a replacement for the other Electromate 400 that has the air compressor that I like a lot. I thought the radio was in addition to that feature. I found that the radio replaces the compressor and for me that was not a good trade off. I will be keeping the Electromate 400 with the air compressor and giving this one away as a christmas gift.

  5. Limited power for running any household items.
Takes forever to charge and doesnt hold a charge well.

  1. This is a fantastic product to use for applications when your not using alot of electronics. Great with laptops and portable devices.

  2. I am returning this surge item because it doesn't plug into the wall. The pictures and the description do not make that clear.

  3. I only needed a surge protector - I must not have read the description well, because there is a place for phone connectors - just more than I needed. Otherwise a fine product (so far) that came within a reasonable amount of time.

  4. Not much to say about a surge protector other than this one actually protects against LIGHTNING where as most others don't. It's great! The two lights show you whether or not the outlet you are using is grounded or not as well. I definitely recommend it!

  5. I purchased the item because it was slim enough to fit behind my flat screen. It worked out perfectly and helped me hide my cables for a cleaner looking installation.
