  1. This is a great textbook for the beginning and intermediate level electricians. The text stays detailed yet organized as you follow steps in the process of wiring a typical house. It is based on the 2002 NEC so everything is updated and to code. The study questions, and chapter end summaries are key features that will aid in the learning process. I believe this book is a great bridge from classroom study to on-the-job training. I will use this book and would highly recommend it to others.

  2. this book was requested by the vocational school I am attending. It is the best price I found, and it arrived before I expected it. thank you

  3. Bravo! For the past 2 years I've been learning how to design and build my own house. In the process I've consumed a few dozen technical books on everything from AutoCAD to Plumbing. Few are really everything I'd hoped for. Some are too sketchy to be truly useful if you're serious about attaining journeyman proficiency; others are self-indulgently anecdotal, badly written, confusing or even confused. This book is the truly brilliant exception. The organization is amazingly clear--you always know where the information you're getting fits into the big picture, and there are abundant (and abundantly clear) color diagrams, letter-boxed critical points, highlights and reviews. And the language and tone are exactly right--never condescending or jokey and always concise and on point. This book is a model for technical writing. Many thanks Mr. Sorge!

  1. A friend of mine lent this great book. I have plenty of experience with the 8051 and needed to learn about the 80251. Great tips and examples enabled a smooth transition from one processor to the other. It's very clearly written. I would recommend it to anyone. It could have some good examples in "C" though.

1 comments about McGraw-Hill's Handbook of Electric Construction Calculations.
  1. I have both the calculations book by Brian McPartland and the NEC Handbook by Brian and his dad Joe. I prefer the handbook more, although you may want both. My problem with this book is that it was not proofed adequately for math errors and typos. I have found at least four computational errors in the examples.
I am not to impressed with this book because it does not take you too far beyond the examples already in the NEC or beyond the obvious. The explainations of why they are computing things the way they are (logic behind the computations) are all explained in the Handbook. Many of the examples are merely duplications of the handbook examples. If you want one good book, buy the Handbook. Don't waste money on the NEC handbooks published by NFPA. They merely waste space by quoting the NEC with some useless comments thrown in. McPartland is the only guy who has ever written a handbook worth having that goes in depth as to why the code is the way it is.

2 comments about Old Electrical Wiring Maintenance and Retrofit.
  1. The author is obviously knowledgeable and does a good job of transferring his experience to paper, [but the book has problems]. As I paged through the "Familiarizing Yourself with Old Wiring" section, I found myself looking for pictures of old cables so I could familiarize myself with them. There aren't any. And as I looked through the rest of the book, I noticed that this seems to be an overall problem. Instead of pictures of important things such as different types of old cable, the book offers such things as a full-page spread devoted to a permit form. Although I loved the old ads and the photos of ancient receptacles and knife switches, good illustrations are few and far between, and the quality of the photography is absolutely terrible. There is good information on old wiring in here, but you have to hunt to find it. Too often the book digresses into topics that have little or nothing to do with old cable. I found myself wondering why there's a section on photovoltacis and X-10 ultramodern control systems in the book at all. Still, the parts of the book that deal with old cable are great. I liked the book, even with its obvious problems. It's a good, necessary addition to any electrician's library, including mine. But it could have been so much more.--Rex Cauldwell

  2. This is an excellent book dealing with the problems faced with old wiring. The content is very helpful for all levels of experience, however, it is extremely valuable for newer electricians or electricians specializing in old wiring. The descriptions of the Carter System, background information and old catalog sheets are worth the price of the book itself. Buy this book, it'll make you money!
