5 comments about Drywall: Professional Techniques for Walls & Ceilings.
  1. I had never even watched any drywalling before I plunged headlong into remodeling a room in my home. I read through this book, went by Mr. Ferguson's step-by-step advice, and ended up with a job that I am quite proud of. My only regret is that I chose not to texture. I painted the finished walls with a semi-gloss paint, and if the light is right, you can see some of my sanding marks. This year I removed a door and patched the hole with drywall. His instructions were invaluable, and yes, I textured this time. It looks great. Thank you Mr. Ferguson!

  2. I bought this to prepare for drywalling the small storage area under my stairs for the kids to use and it had all I needed to get the job done effceintly. If you'v never drywalled before and need to this will help.

  3. This was my first time drywalling. Mr Ferguson's book was invaluabe to me having a sucessful project. After having water damage from a broken pipe to my finished basement, I got estimates from contractors... Determined not to pay those rates I forged ahead on my own completing the project for a fraction of the estimates. With Mr. Ferguson's step-by-step advice, I ended up with a job that has professional quality. Ferguson gives you everything you need from the choice of proper tools to using screws over nails to how to make repairs. Simply Outstanding! Thanks Mr. Ferguson!

  4. Buyers beware that the picture of the book shown is not the actual book that's for sale. If you click on the picture then you will see the actual book which was published in 1996 and not the 2002 version which is shown in the picture. The date is posted in the product details section but if your like me and just look at the picture you will be very disappointed. I've heard nothing but good things about the 2002 version but this version seems out of date and the illustrations are not as good. Hope this helps someone avoid making the same mistake I did. The newer version is worth spending the extra 5-10 bucks on.

  5. This is a terrible book. It is loaded with bad techniques and misinformation. It's pages of pages of garbage. he talks about drywall as if it's an art form. Stay away from this book!!!!

  1. I bought this book thinking it would have plans for the shed that is featured in the advertisements. What it contains is the same picture as in the ad... that is all. A total waste of my money.

  1. this is a good book i bought for a friend. Great information.

  2. I own a large log cabin in eastern idaho. This book covers the basics on bugs and a bit on rot but is clearly outdated. I would avoid this book as there are many others out there that have more info and are less expensive. There are a ton of new products on the market that this author could not adreese because they are new products. save you money

  1. With over 500 illustrations, "Structure, Roofing and the Exterior" shows you exactly what the finished job should look like.

Alan Carson and Robert Dunlop prove in this easy-to-use book that pictures really are worth a thousand words. Through clearly detailed illustrations Carson and Dunlop walk you through your home, showing you just what your repairs and renovations should look like, inside and out. This book is an excellent tool for the new home owner or home inspector, showing you which pitfalls to avoid and what to look for when searching for potential problems in the structure, roof or exteriorof your or your client's home.

  2. You're a Home Inspector or simply in search of picture after picture with little other detail other than technical information. If you are looking for advice on how to repair or fix items, DO NOT BUY this or other Carson Dunlop books in this series, or the - The Illustrated Home. Carson Dunlop is a firm out of Canada that does produce good materials for Home Inspectors, but these are not "how to" manuals, nor are these books good for the average home owner.Kind of sad when people write misleading reviews to simply increase sales. On the positive - DO BUY this book if you are simply looking for very detailed technical information.

5 comments about The Outdoor Shower: Creative design ideas for backyard living, from the functional to the fantastic.
  1. Just getting ready for another project and this book sheds great light on outdoor showers

  2. Terrific ideas and with great pictures to go along with....great book to day dream with. Also very practical information and instructions for doing your own project.

  3. SAVE YOUR $$$ and skip purchasing 'THE OUTDOOR SHOWER'. I bought and then returned this book as I found it to be lacking in fresh, new ideas on the subject of choosing and installing an outdoor shower. The text was blah and un-engaging and the all-important photo-illustrations were badly shot and not at all inspirational. I purchased this book thinking it would give me an overview of styles/periods/designs from which I might be inspired to install my own outdoor shower. Instead, what I found were amateurish, candid photos that were mundane, souless and frankly BORING. Avoid this book and head instead to your local newstand or library to find imaginative ideas in the shelter magazines: Coastal Living-MS Living-Yankee-Sunset all have featured pieces on this topic with a fresh outdoor lifestyle slant. This book was a dud with a capital D.

  4. This book is a practical guide to putting in an outdoor shower. I would've liked more photos of what people have done to create great outdoor shower spaces- the book seems to mostly focus on Martha's Vineyard- but this book has some good advice on plumbing from the house, drainage, and partitions. It is a good place to start if putting in an outdoor shower, but I found the internet and my local guys at Home Depot to be better resources for some things.

  5. The book has some interesting ideas and nice pictures, but it really comes up short in planning and building an outdoor shower. Eventually I did it myself and, by the way, there were some plumbing errors that should be pointed out to the author, specifically there are two kinds of PVC pipe, one for hot and cold and one just for cold water.

  1. This is an excellent book..answers questions to many (very many) questions on home improvement. A great book for novice and expert alike (trust me, you're never to old to learn). basement, doors, ventilation, Oh, my...I liked it.

One note, this book, ISBN 1929049358 is a Paperback book, not Hardcover. Just as good, no...better.

  2. Since purchasing and renovating a turn of the century farmhouse I have read everything I could get my hands on, including almost every back issue of TOH magazine. I could not put this book down until I finished it. I didn't even know what a joist was when I fell in love and decided to buy a house in the country. I learned so much by reading this book. Thanks Norm!
